am writing this and wondering, “Where does time go?” It seems like yesterday that I was writing last November’s editorial letter. My wife Wendy and I were on a very cool adventure last month with our friends Greg and Jennifer Tudor: hiking 10 miles down into the Grand Canyon onto land owned and maintained by the Havasupai (people of the blue-green waters) American Indian tribe. Talk about a time for reflection...four days off the grid, no cell phones, beautiful canyons and waterfalls to explore...it was magnificent. I let gratefulness and beauty be my guide for those four days as I experienced the beautiful scenery, and pondered the ever-changing force of nature and of a time long past, yet preserved, for the reservation. It was a perfect trip to ground me before the busyness of the Holiday season. Traditions and rituals are an important part of our makeup; Phil Johnson whether it’s an annual gathering of family and friends or Aunt Jane’s famous sweet potato casserole at Thanksgiving. We love traditions around here, and one of our favorites is our annual Christmas Faire — Sunday, November 11 from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. The twinkle and dazzle of the day makes it one of our best events of the year. The forecast calls for a bit of snow and a special guest — so be ready! Thank you to our local American Heroes — our Veterans — as we celebrate the gift of freedom on November 11. Please read on pages 10-11 how some of our local community members and stores are giving back to those who have given so much. There is always an uplifting pulse to this time of year. The colors of the trees change, and the energy of the Center is a bit brighter as our merchants prepare for the busiest and most joyous season of all. The Lincoln Center season of giving begins on that date as we continue our annual Coat and Sock Drive from November 11 thru December 24, benefiting our charitable partner The Gospel Center Rescue Mission. Look for containers throughout the Center, and a full list on page 7. On December 8, we will again help the Emergency Food Bank “fill the trucks” in front of Podesto’s Market and Trader Joe’s. Thank you to St. Mary’s and Lincoln High baseball players for donating their time for this event. For more information on any of these events, follow us on Instagram and Facebook (@LincolnCenterShops) or check out our website (LincolnCenterShops.com). A big thank you to the Donlin and Langford dads and sons for modeling men’s fall fashion while playing some traditional pre-Thanksgiving football on the beautiful UOP campus. What a fun photo shoot! Who’s ready for some mud football!? You will want to check out the festive drink menus at our fine eateries this Holiday Season. There is a sneak peek on pages 24-25 of just a few of the many creations by our talented mixologists around the Center. Please remember, always drink and drive responsibly. As you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the next few months, remember to appreciate the moment(s), and don’t forget to schedule your Holiday party reservations early— many dates are already booked up.

Stockton’s American A look into what our veteran’s are doing in the community.
BY ARIEL ARMANINO
Team Red, White, and Blue
Recent years have seen the emergence of several new veteran-based organizations that are dedicated to combating some of the unique obstacles that veterans face. One obstacle in particular is the isolation that many vets feel during what can be an extremely challenging adjustment back into civilian life—and it is an issue that local organization Team RWB has set out to tackle. A national non-profit started in 2010, Team RWB strives to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. “Transitioning out of the military is a really tough thing to do,” said Stockton Chapter Captain, Kelly Hunsucker. “There isn’t a great playbook, so you have to find your own way.” To help this process, Team RWB holds ongoing social gatherings and physical events that include hikes, crossfit classes, bike rides, yoga, and weekly runs with Fleet Feet Sports in Lincoln Center. “We try to partner with members of the community to offer low or nocost options for our members to really eliminate some of the barriers to getting out of the house, reconnecting to the community, and establishing those new relationships,” said Kelly. Kelly first became involved with Team RWB through her husband Josh, an Army veteran of several years. After his time in the military, Josh became a member of the Sacramento Team RWB Chapter. The involvement soon became a family affair, with their children taking part in events and Kelly now leading the Stockton Chapter, which opened two years ago. As a civilian and member of a veteran family, Kelly loves that Team

RWB is inclusive of everyone within the community. “It’s for civilians and veterans alike. Anybody can register and be a part of this group, which is really great, because that’s how you establish those deeper-rooted community connections.” For more information on how you can support our local vets, get involved, and register for Team RWB (it’s free!), visit teamrwb.com. Veteran’s Day at Village Barber One step into Lincoln Center’s Village Barbershop and owner Bobby Page, Sr.’s immense respect for our country’s veterans is undeniable. The walls of the shop are laden with military photos of his customers and their loved ones, which Bobby frames and hangs himself. “My heart is with them. I love supporting our veterans,” Bobby shared. For years, Bobby has supported those who’ve served in various ways, so it was no surprise when he launched the annual Veteran’s Day Event in the Center. This year’s Veteran’s Day event, taking place in the parking lot outside of the barbershop, is expected to be spectacular. It will feature a flag ceremony led by Lincoln High School’s JROTC, a Huey helicopter, a flyover, a raffle, a live band, and more! There will be delicious food courtesy of Midgley’s Public House and commemorative t-shirts will be sold. All proceeds will go to the veteran’s organizations involved in the event. Come out Saturday, November 10, between 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, and show your support of our country’s brave service men and women. This is one event you won’t want to miss!

Ask Dr. Sam Q
My dog’s breath smells horrible, is there something wrong with his teeth?
ANSWER: Bad breath is usually caused by significant infection in the mouth and is a sign that your pet may need veterinary attention! It is important to have your dog examined on an annual basis for overall health, including their dental health. During an annual check-up I assess every body system, including dental health. I see if there are any signs of early gingivitis or bone loss around the teeth that would be caused by underlying infection. If we are able to catch periodontal disease early, then we can perform more routine periodontal cleanings instead of having to do major dental extractions.
I recommend brushing your dog’s teeth once every day! If you start when they are puppies it can actually become an enjoyable experience for them, believe it or not! For older animals, I often recommend running routine lab work in order to find early disease processes before they become unmanageable. Just as aging people require more dental work, older animals, too, have more wear and tear on their mouths and usually require more dental work. Without appropriate attention, dental disease becomes worse with age and major extractions become necessary as the level of infection becomes too high. Besides regular brushing and peri- odontal cleanings at the vet’s office, I recommend Maxiguard products for my patients. These medicated wipes and gel are applied to the teeth to prevent calculus and bacteria from building up! By practicing good health we can keep our pets out of the emergency room and make sure that they live a long healthy life! DR. SAM VARON | VENETIAN PET HOSPITAL Venetian Pet Hospital is located in Lincoln Center behind Trader Joe’s. To make an appointment please call 209-477-3926.

RIDE WITH US:
T
hirty years ago, Performance Bicycle was envisioned by a husband and wife duo in North Carolina. Since then, they have more than 100 stores nationwide — one of them nestled right here in Lincoln Center South. Tailoring to customers of all kinds; children, beginner riders to advance, Performance Bicycle (PB) really has something for all. As an avid cyclist, Ken Meyer of Meyer’s Fashion Optical, who recently retired after twenty-two years in business, spends much of his free time at the bike shop. Tyler Young (pictured right) has been the store manager for over five years now. He has developed the highest attended weekend rides throughout all the PB stores, beating San Francisco, Portland and the like. PB offers a bike maintenance class every other Thursday: bring in your bike and work with Alton Stevens, PB’s lead mechanic, who has been serving the Stockton location for over twenty years, to learn his tips and tricks about keeping your bike in the best shape possible. If you haven’t already, stop into Performance Bicycle this holiday season — not only will you find a plethora of bikes perfect for children, but you might even stumble upon something for yourself!
Performance Bicycle now carries Kink BMX Bikes. Visit the store to learn more about the variety of this incredibly cool and durable line. Community involvement is something that Tyler enjoys most. Not only to keep the Performance Bicycle name top of mind but to also educate new or avid cyclists on all they have to offer. Local elementary schools in Stockton benefit from this by the “Bike Rodeo’s” that Tyler and his team host at local schools — teaching bike and helmet safety, as well as how to keep their bikes and chains in tip-top shape. Obstacle courses are set up for a little-added fun to test their skills. Kids are not the only ones that
