HAPPY. GRATEFUL. & STUFFED.

T

his month Lincoln Center starts another milestone year as we turn 68 years old. It’s a true testament to our customers, merchants, staff and founders — who’ve made the years go by so fast and furious. Adapting to the changing times of the retail environment by giving the customers an experience they want is what we continue to strive for here in the Village. With that in mind, the turn out for the much anticipated 85ºC Bakery Café grand opening last month was a huge success. Long lines wrapped around American Hearing Aids and Dynasty Restaurant, filled with people waiting to try out their extensive menu of baked goods, teas, and coffee.

Phil Johnson

The bells are already ringing! It’s time to get the Center ready for the Holidays (where did this year go!?). Chris Boyle, our Head of Maintenance, will begin his 13th year directing his staff — who are hurrying around like Santa’s Elves — to prepare the Center for the most magical time of the year. Look for the new holiday décor we’re adding around the Center this year. You won’t want to miss it!    Giving back to our community continues to be of utmost importance to our Lincoln Center Merchants. Help them support the many needs of Stockton by cleaning out your closets and donate gently used coats and new socks starting November 1 through December 31. All proceeds will be donated to the Gospel Center Rescue Mission. Find a full list of locations to donate on page 7. In addition to coats and socks, you can also help us collect food on December 7 (the first Saturday in December) to support the Emergency Food Bank of San Joaquin County from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm in front of Podesto’s Market and Trader Joe’s.   The traditional Christmas Faire kicks off a day of fun on Sunday November 17 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Come out to ride the train, pet Santa’s reindeer, listen to holiday music and let Santa know if you have been naughty or nice this year. Check Lincolncentershops.com for a full list of holiday activities happening in the center this season.    I want to express our thanks this season for the last 68 years of support from our community and encourage you all to show your gratitude during the holidays, it is one of the simplest yet most powerful things we as humans can do for each other this Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving!

4 TIPS

CONQUER

Holiday HUNGER

BY GINA BUSCAGLIA, RD

POMEGRANATE WALNUT AND BEET SALAD Servings: 6 INGREDIENTS:

• 6 cups spring salad mix • 1 cup pomegranate seeds • ½ cup walnuts, chopped • ¼ red onion, sliced thin • ½ cup roasted beets, sliced thin • ½ cup goat cheese, crumbled • ½ cup light balsamic dressing • salt & pepper, to taste INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a large bowl, add spring salad mix, pomegranate seeds, walnuts, red onions, beets, salt, pepper, and balsamic dressing. Toss ingredients until evenly mixed. 2. Add crumbled goat cheese on top and ENJOY! Salads are not an exact science; add or subtract the amount of toppings as you see fit. Feel free to swap out anything for another you prefer, for example choosing a different type of lettuce or cheese, etc.

health & beauty And just like that — the holidays are here! We spoke with local dietitian, Gina Buscaglia, RD., and decided to deliver you four tips to help you get through the season of sugar!

1

Don’t arrive hungry. It is important not to skip meals, especially when you’re headed to a party. Thinking that you are not going to eat much prior to “save room” can lead to overeating once you have arrived. Instead, load up on nutritious, fiber-rich food items prior to arriving. Fiber keeps you feeling full longer and on the plus side, high fiber foods can be a great low-calorie options such as carrots, beets, broccoli, or brussels sprouts to name a few.

2

Get up and move. Stick to your routine work outs and also try to incorporate more family fun around being active. Often the focus can be on all of the food and desserts. But what about incorporating a family walk, a dance party in the living room or even a clean game of touch football after dinner. Being active will not only help make up for eating a little more but it also can be a great way to relieve some holiday stress.

3

Outsmart the appetizers and buffet table. Grab a smaller plate to keep you from grabbing more than you need. Pile on the fruits and vegetables aiming to cover at least half your plate and try to avoid those baked with lots of sugar or heavy sauces. Look at all the food options prior to scooping up and see what it is that you may really want, versus trying to fit it all. Take a break and give your mind some time to register whether you are full or not before going for seconds. Ten minutes or more is all it takes.

4

Bring a healthy dish. Provide yourself and others with a nutritious option. Try to choose leaner meat options such as chicken, turkey or fish, your family and heart will thank you. Ditch the saturated fats in butter, lard and shortening. Instead make a simple veggie dish baked with olive oil or add a fresh salad. Need a little inspiration, check out my favorite go-to salad below incorporating some seasonal goodies.

Let’s enjoy the holidays with friends and family, making healthy choices together.

MORE LIFE AT

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT:

Nikole Sarale, Owner Karin Neal, Dea Castrejon, Randy Buck, Krystal Gouveia, Nansi Barrera, and Sonia Pantoja (All shoes pictured are found at Fleet Feet Stockton)

I

t started with one workout, in one location, with one person. When Karin Neal’s 17-yearold daughter finally convinced her to take a class at their local Orangetheory Fitness (OTF), she fell in love. As an avid triathlete, fitness was always a big part of Karin’s life, and she quickly added OTF into her daily fitness routine. She learned about a new studio opening a few miles away and decided to take the leap to become a certified OTF trainer.   After two or three months of being a trainer, Karin watched as the members started to morph mentally and physically. And from that moment, Karin saturated her life with all things Orangetheory. She researched every aspect of the business and eventually inquired with OTF corporate in hopes

of receiving rights to a franchise. She soon landed two franchise rights in Modesto and Stockton and made moves as fast as she could. In April 2018, the Modesto studio opened, followed by the opening of the Stockton studio in September of 2019.    Orangetheory Fitness is science backed; technology tracked; and coach inspired. Created by Ellen Latham out of South Florida, OTF is a onehour, full body workout that is heart-rate intervalbased training. It truly is for everyone, wherever you are on your fitness journey. Every time you step into the studio your heartrate will be tracked with the goal in mind to get in the “Orange Zone” (84% of your total heartbeat) for a minimum of 12 minutes. These 12 minutes bring EPOC — excess post-exercise oxygen consumption — simply

put if you challenge your body at the right intensity, your body will work harder to recover oxygen lost during exercise. OTF’s theory is that if you spend 12 minutes or longer in the Orange Zone to get your heart rate between 84-91% of your unique heart rate maximum, it’ll rev your metabolism and makes you burn calories long after your workout is over. When your heart rate is elevated, you’ll start to see and feel real changes in your body. Karin’s favorite part about OTF is the community. She says, “these are places that create friendships and connections.” The culture is filled with dedicated, loyal members that are all looking to serve each other, their health and their wellbeing. Karin and her staff at the Stockton studio feel so thankful and lucky to be able to make an impact on the community here in Stockton.    The team at OTF Stockton promised that wherever you are on your workout journey, they’re here for you. Stop in today to try your first class for free!

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | NOVEMBER 2019

know your neighbor

Donna Vincent | Owner Tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Stockton. I attended public school through seventh grade, then transferred to Annunciation Catholic School for eighth grade. I then went on to graduate from St. Mary’s High School and later attended Delta College. A passion of mine was dance, so I took four years of ballet, modern contemporary and choreography. I have three children, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren (my fourth great grandchild is due Oct. 30!).

How long have you owned Merle Norman?

I have owned Merle Norman for 24 years. I bought my first Merle Norman studio in Modesto in June of 1995. After five years in August of 2000, I purchased the Merle Norman Studio in Stockton in beautiful Lincoln Center. I love my location and I love my work!

What brought you into the make-up business?

My mother was a great example for fashion, color, and creativity. When I was eight years old, I convinced her to let me be a gypsy for Halloween so I could wear bangles and red lipstick. When I was 13 my mother enrolled me in the Katten & Marengo “Fashion Debs” where I learned fashion, makeup and modeling. I eventually moved onto art and oil painting, so color has

always been easy for me. When I see someone, my mind starts to create color.

Is there anything special Merle Norman is offering for the holiday season?

blush (cream and powder) and several types of lip color.

Any advice for those looking to spice up their make-up routine?

For the Holidays we have some very exciting products! We have a new eye palette, blush colors and lipstick shades coming your way. There will also be a new gift with purchase available featuring our skin care line, Skintelligent.

To spice up your make up routine you can do simple additions like adding additional eye liner. If you wear black, add royal blue on bottom lid over the black. If you wear brown, add copper or gold. Always start with a primer and end with finishing spray.

What is your favorite product or item you sell?

What is your dream vacation?

I enjoy introducing customers to skin care that is appropriate for their skin type. I love when they see and feel a difference in their skin. I also love doing makeovers and helping customers be confident in doing their own individual look. One thing that people may not know is that we offer FREE facials! They take about 30 minutes, and require an appointment, but we can focus on specific skincare needs and we always finish with the appropriate skincare.

What are the must-have products of the season?

We have foundation and skin care for all types of skin and all needs — normal, oily, dry, sensitive, combination and acne. You can choose from several types of foundations. We have concealers, CC cream, powders and powder foundation, eye shadows,

I think I just had my dream vacation. I went to Paris with my family for my granddaughters wedding. Most perfect dream ever! She let me do her complete make up — it was such an honor.

What’s your favorite holiday tradition?

I love Christmas. Lots of food and family! Our tradition is one person opens their presents at a time, we start with the youngest and proceed to the oldest… takes forever! But really fun. 142 Lincoln Center (209) 474-0314 Merle Norman Cosmetics in Lincoln Center Mon-Sat: 10am-6pm • Sun: 12-5pm

tarted in 1978, the Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) was formed as a result of the tragic, high-profile child abuse case of 3-year-old LeTanya Smith. What started as a small organization has now grown into a 16-million-dollar non-profit agency that runs over 20 programs—all committed to preventing child abuse, ensuring safety, and providing education and treatment for abused and at-risk children, and parents, in San Joaquin County.    “In order to really tackle child abuse and fully eradicate it, you have to come at it from so many different angles,” said CAPC employee Kristen Velarde of their many preventative programs. “It’s not just helping a family who’s already been contacted by CPS; it’s about helping high-risk populations and connecting with them with resources so they’re never at a place where abuse happens.”    The programs of the CAPC are all centered around three pillars of focus: Early Education, Clinical Services, and Family Strengthening. Through pre-schools, home-based education services, parent cafes, therapy services, resource centers, and dozens of other intervention-based programs, the CAPC works endlessly to prevent child abuse and neglect before it can start. “We educate and strengthen families because the more information we can give them about their child’s needs and how to properly parent, the more the chances of child abuse go down,” said CAPC’s Director of Marketing, Shauna Buzunis-Jacob.   Additionally, the CAPC works alongside CPS, often intervening, making house visits, and helping families in need by getting them out of crisis and helping them navigate and connect with the resources of our community.   One particularly impactful program, which the CAPC hopes to grow dramatically in upcoming years, is their Court Appointed Special Advocates program, known as CASA. Within this program, trained volunteers’ mentor and advocate for children in the foster care system during

the dependency court process. According to Shauna, there are currently 1,700 foster youth in San Joaquin County, and statistically, only 50% of these children will graduate from high school. Even more heartbreaking, 1 in 5 will be homeless by age 18. “Our foster kids are driving into that pipeline of homelessness,” said Shauna. “We know that this is a high-risk population. So, how do we change these statistics? We do that through our CASA program.”   To oversee all of their many programs, the downtown Stockton-based agency has a staff of over 200 dedicated employees, headed by Executive Director Lindy Turner-Hardin, who has been with the CAPC for over sixteen years. Recently, she was awarded the prestigious ATHENA Award for her unrelenting commitment to the children of our community.    To learn how to become a CASA Volunteer, stay up to date on news and events, or to Adopt-a-family this holiday season—be sure to follow the CAPC of San Joaquin on Facebook and Instagram.

CAPC ADOPT-A-FAMILY!

The CAPC’s Adopt-a-family, taking place December 14th, nominates families that are receiving services from the CAPC or CASA Program. Community donors are asked to take on a family and purchase two gifts per child, which are oftentimes the only gifts these families receive. If you’re looking to get into the spirit of giving, be sure to Adopt-a-family this holiday season!
