community feature

Our M local BY DANIELLE SCHENONE

“We’re a strong group, and we work with what we have,” Mallapur said. “But, we would be so happy for our community to help.”

icke Grove Zoo has delighted families for 60 years, and it needs our support to remain an iconic Stockton staple.

Zoo needs you

Nestled on 258 acres, located between Stockton and Lodi, Micke Grove Regional Park has delighted families since local philanthropists, William and Julie Micke, donated the land in 1938. The park features many attractions, including Micke Grove Zoo, the San Joaquin Historical Museum, the Japanese Garden, Fun Town, and beautiful picnic settings.   Micke Grove Zoo is home to more than 150 species. Zoo curator Avanti Mallapur said its focus is smaller-species conservation, specifically critically-endangered species. For example, they have consistently bred the golden-lion tamarins, an endangered species from the Brazilian rainforest. The zoo is also one of three in the United States to house black parrots.   For 50 years, the San Joaquin County Historical Museum has showcased our county’s colorful history. Its collection spans more than 50,000 objects, including Native American artifacts, archival materials from Stockton founder Charles Weber, and more. It also includes four preserved buildings that provide a look into 1850s-era Stockton.    Home to 65 flowering cherry trees, the Japanese Garden was designed by Nagao Sakurai, a landscape

architect from the Imperial Palace in Japan. Arguably its most recognized feature is the vibrant, red bridge, adorned by eight bronze lotus flower bud finials. It also features a large koi pond – fish known to live for more than 200 years.    With a unique vintage feel, Fun Town has been a local favorite for decades. The amusement park features ten rides, ranging from the Tilt-A-Whirl to the Fun Town Express, an Allen Herschell train. The park also has a concession stand with carnival-inspired treats.    According to the 2018-2019 Proposed San Joaquin County Budget, parks and recreation is funded by the General Fund (45 percent) and the Parks trust funds (55 percent). At this rate, the trust funds will be depleted by 2019-2020. Less reliance on these funds is crucial to sustaining Micke Grove. Our community can help keep the park a family destination for generations to come.

SUPPORT OUR PARK

STOCKTON:

“LAND OF OPPORTUNITY.” BY JO ANN KIRBY

F O R B E S

M A G A Z I N E

The names on the big warehouses that have sprouted up in San Joaquin County over the years are some of the biggest – UPS, Safeway, Tesla and more.   The boom is excellent news for Ryan McShane, an industrial real estate broker with Colliers International. “Everyone is very bullish on the Valley right now,” McShane said. “A lot of these light manufacturing operations and distribution centers have been priced out of the Bay Area and the Silicon Valley.”    It’s good news for Stockton residents, as new companies relocating to the county bring economic growth in

a variety of areas. “San Joaquin County has added more than 10,000 transportation and warehousing payroll jobs since 2014, mostly due to the e-commerce fulfillment center boom,” said Dr. Jeffrey Michael of the Center for Business and Policy Research at the University of the Pacific Eberhardt School of Business. “These are just payroll jobs; if you count self-employment (independent contractors), it is likely over 15,000 jobs. It is the fastest growing sector in the county by far, and now warehousing and e-commerce rivals agriculture concerning its place as a distinctive element of the County’s economy.”   During its latest data revision for San Joaquin County in March 2018, the state EDD increased their estimate of jobs in San Joaquin County by nearly 8,000 and transportation and warehousing accounted for 75% of the new jobs, Michael said. Demand is so high for industrial warehouses, that new industrial parks are being built both to suit needs and also on speculation with some projects as big as 1 million square feet.

“This has been the biggest factor behind recent economic growth in the county. In addition to the direct growth in warehousing activity, it has supported growth in the much-related sector. The county has seen new construction in abundance of the industrial real estate and high leasing activity and low vacancy rates in the industrial real estate as a result of this expansion,” says Michael. “And then there are the consumer spending ripple effects, as the newly hired workers spend their wages on a variety of goods and services in the county.”

SO FRESH! SO CLEAN! SO GREEN! L

incoln Center’s newest addition opens to recordbreaking numbers...Making Stockton’s own franchise, number 1 nationwide!   It seems like “tasty” and “healthy” are two qualities that have long been at odds when it comes to food. Thankfully, Lincoln Center’s newest merchant, Nékter Juice Bar, is here to change that significantly. Owner Mark Sarale and his son, Marcus, oversee the fast-paced operation, which boasts only the freshest ingredients and quality products.    The menu at Nékter is unique, offering an abundance of seriously healthy options, such as pressed juices, smoothies, açai bowls (pronounced “ah-sah-EE”), and even their version of ice cream, called Skoop! They pride themselves on using only fresh fruits and vegetables, going through cases and cases of produce each day. Even the cashew milk, which serves as the base for most of their treats, is made in-house, daily. And... the kicker? The treats are just as tasty as they are good for you!   Having worked in the health and wellness industry for over 20 years, Mark saw a want and a need for an innovative, health-conscious spot for the community. When he stumbled upon Nékter, he immediately aligned with the products that provided such variety, quality, and convenience to customers.

The success that Nékter has seen speaks volumes to how good it really is. Members of the community have flocked to get their freshness fix from Nékter since it opened, like boxer Gabriel Flores Jr. and MMA fighter Nate Diaz. From UOP athletes to high schoolers, people of all ages enjoy the various options at Nékter. “We have something for everyone,“ said Marcus, “whether it’s a sweet, tasty smoothie for a kid - that you can even add vegetables to - or daily ginger shot or pressed juice. It’s a convenient and healthy means for anyone that’s on that walk of health.”    Fan favorites tend to be their handcrafted açai bowls, made with pure açai berries and fresh toppings, or Skoop. Skoop is dairy-free, contains no refined sugar, and is churned in an Italian gelato machine—making it creamy, luscious, and irresistibly delicious. It’s ice cream you can feel good about. Yes, please!!!    Whether you’re in a rush and need to pick up something fast, want to grab a treat with the family, or even begin a fresh

juice cleanse, Nékter has you covered. Welcome to the Center!

O

n August 22, five extraordinary women came together as complete strangers with one common goal in mind: to raise awareness about a terrible disease that affected each and every one of them. Little did these women know that agreeing to share their stories with our community would develop a bond that will last a lifetime. This truly remarkable day began at POMP Salon for hair and makeup. The stylists dedicated their time and talent to make these women look and feel flawless.    The setting couldn’t have been more perfect — top hits from the 80’s evoked feelings of nostalgia, giving them the undeniable urge to get up and dance. Fresh in for fall, fashion for the day was inspired and provided by many of Lincoln Center’s top retailers, giving the ladies a perfect finishing touch to their entire look.

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | OCTOBER 2018

EDITORIAL BY KATLYN JOHNSON

It was clear these women’s lives were not going to be the same from this day forward. As the morning progressed, so did their bond. Moment after moment we watched these women connect in ways almost unimaginable. Our first glimpse into this special bond was when 13-year breast cancer survivor, Sandee Kautz, a triple-negative survivor who, before this day, did not know a single person who endured her same type of cancer suddenly realized she was no longer alone — discovering two new survivors within this group with her same diagnosis. We knew something special was happening.    One of the youngest survivors, 31-year old Brandy Anderson, recently finished her last round of radiation in June. It was clear after meeting Brandy that her vibrant personality is contagious. In addition to being a working, single-mom, she also created an oil called “Rad” that effectively prevents burns during radiation treatment — which all these women can relate to. Yet again, strengthening this bond between these

KARIN

HEATH

BRAVING

the

BATTLE

women’s health

BY ARIEL ARMANINO

W

hile a 40th birthday is a milestone moment in many women’s lives, Karin Heath couldn’t prepare herself for what hers would bring—a diagnosis of breast cancer. With quick action and a round of radiation Karin found herself cancer free, but exactly fifteen years later, she would come face to face with her second bout of breast cancer. After chemo, a slew of operations, and ongoing medical battles, Karin is still dealing with the aftermath nearly 9 years after her second diagnosis. But she has not let her battle with cancer defeat her spirits. In fact, she’s channeled her hardships into helping others. Karin turned to dedicate herself to the community and has never looked back, with her involvement spanning organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Children’s Home of Stockton, Hospice of San Joaquin, and countless others. She is now a pillar of the community, lending a hand anywhere that’s needed, and working tirelessly to ensure that women facing the same battle have the resources they need. Karin shares with us her advice on braving the battle with breast cancer, and in it lies lessons for all of us.

“There has to be something out there that makes you feel good. A few years after getting diagnosed, something just snapped inside of me and said you can not be a bump on a log, you were granted a third lease on life, you need to make the most of it. And that’s when I thought to myself, ‘I want to go out and help somebody.’”

Talk about it.

“Your family is scared. It’s the unknown, and it’s difficult for them to comprehend. Talk about it at home and take [your family] into the hospital and have them educated on everything that is being done in terms that they can really understand.”

Ask for help.

“Don’t do it alone. As strong as you are, ask for help and let yourself be vulnerable. My husband, Mike, was my primary caregiver and I couldn’t have survived without his love and compassion. Whether you need the spiritual advice, the best friend, the neighbor, be sure to make people aware of what you’re going through. Ask, ‘Do you mind if I call you if I need to talk to somebody?’ It’s amazing, the humanity and goodness that people have in them when you ask them for help. It’s absolutely incredible.”

Ask questions.

“Any question is not a stupid question. Trust your medical team and ask questions. Make sure your team is explaining everything in layman’s language and don’t be afraid to ask them for clarification to make sure you understand everything.

Be prepared.

“I wasn’t expecting all the complications I had or to feel so low. The awareness is out there for breast cancer, but the education for the women and families for what happens afterward is lacking. Be sure you talk to people and find what support and resources you have during the process and after.”

Stay positive.

“Do not go down that dark rabbit hole, because once you do it’s tough to climb out. It’s a battle each day, but you pull from within, and somehow you find the strengthday, by day, by day.”
