ach season has highlights, and many of us have a “favorite” time of year we look forward to — I personally love them all. But as fall approaches...and the leaves start to change, and mornings get a little cooler — one of my favorite things starts to happen: harvest begins for the grapes, walnuts and almonds surrounding the San Joaquin Valley. This month, in honor of the fall harvest season, the Chronicle is highlighting the next generation of agribusiness leaders in our area — from growers and wine makers to sales and marketing, flip to page 16 to read about these industry leaders. These are just some of the people making an impact on the farming community around Stockton. Our cover this month features the new owners of CR Porter Home Collection, Mat and Tyler Ferdun-Wood (page 8). This business has continued to evolve over the last 20 years by staying current with the ever-changing home design trends. If you haven’t been to New Yen Ching restaurant in a while, you need to check out their recently completed remodel. Congratulations to Michael Ju, the third generation of his family now running the business. For over 40 years New Yen Ching has been in the same Lincoln Center Phil Johnson location. On page 15, Michael shares their special hand drawn noodle process that has been passed down from generation to generation. Still in the mood for food and more specifically dessert? Check out page 18 for another “secret” family recipe: Anne and Greenlaw Grupe’s famous apple pie. The Grupe Family is one of the founders of Lincoln Center. On Saturday, September 15 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, Lincoln Center welcomes back the Saint Mary’s High School Ramfest. Come on down to the Center and enjoy this free event to support the various Ram Athletic Programs. There will be auction items to bid on, great music, and food for purchase. A special thank you to all who came out in record numbers to support the Lincoln Center series of summer events. Our wine stroll was the largest ever with proceeds benefiting the Junior League of San Joaquin. In July we partnered with Stockton Beer Week and featured craft beers and live music along the Brickwalk. We ended the summer with a “bang” at our Classic Car Show which benefits local high school seniors. Hopefully, you caught our ever-popular fireworks show (sponsored by Visit Stockton) at this fun event! Fall is definitely a reset and reflection time for me. This summer we saw devastation by fires throughout California, and the bravery of those fighting what seemed like endless blazes and smoke. We also saw the passing of an icon in our community: Faye Spanos. Faye was a fixture in Stockton and at Lincoln Center. Our condolences to her family — she will be missed.
Here’s to all of the seasons, and well wishes for a bountiful year for all.
Follow us on:
Warm regards, Phil D. Johnson, President

elebrating it’s twentieth anniversary on October 15, C.R. Porter Home Collection has captivated Stockton with their innovative, creative, beautiful home furnishings, décor, and accessories. And now, under new owners Mat and Tyler Ferdun-Wood, its stylish legacy continues. The couple comes in with an extravagant eye for design, innovative new ideas, and decades of experience. In fact, before purchasing the store in March, Mat worked at C.R. Porter for almost eleven years, learning the ins and outs of the business, and discovering his passion for the industry. As for Tyler— “He married into it,” Mat joked. Though Tyler has also found a love for it all his own. Together, Mat and Tyler are excited to expand C.R. Porter in new directions, while maintaining the quality and premier selections that people know and love. “C.R. Porter has been around for 20 years and has been so great for Stockton. We really just want to continue to build upon that,” said Mat. And with continual additions such as new designs and the launch of a wedding registry, they definitely are! And C.R. Porter is proof that nothing compares to shopping locally. From the items they sell to the overall experience they provide, Mat and Tyler’s philosophy is centered around creativity, customization, and originality. All of the collections in C.R. Porter are handpicked and carefully curated to provide shoppers with unique options. With beautiful items ranging from Jan Barboglio’s hand-forged metal and mouth-blown glass pieces, to hand-carved tables and custommade furniture—there is something for any style. “[Your pieces] should tell a story when you walk into your home, because you chose them,” said Tyler. “It’s not something that you simply saw online. It’s something you created yourself.” When it comes to staple pieces to invest in for the home, Mat’s suggestion is quality furniture that is unique, customizable, and most importantly— livable. C.R. Porter’s custom sofas, for example, are an ideal investment for anyone. With hundreds of high-grade MAT’S 4 STEP DESIGN CHECK LIST for your HOME: upholstery options, and the ability to For explanations of each step listed above, visit our Instagram page — @lincolncentershops customize size and shape, you can — every week in September. Carrying on the legacy with a new look and the same great taste Michael Ju | Partner What region in China is the food at New Yen Ching from? My grandfather originated from the north Eastern Region of China, but the food we prepare is from the North Region. It is a Peking, Szechuan and Hunan Cuisine.
What are the family ties to the restaurant?
Do you have a favorite dish?
Congratulations on the Remodel! Tell us more.
The first thing you see when walking into the restaurant is the mural on the wall. Can you tell us more about its history?
I started working at New Yen Ching when I was 16 years old for my uncle Jack. He has five brothers and all of them are in the family restaurant business with five restaurants spread throughout Lodi and Stockton.
The restaurant finished undergoing a remodel which started July 30 and completed on August 12. Be sure to stop by and check out the new store front as well as the interior update! We are excited for the new looks!
Noodles! Tell us about this homemade goodness.
Yes, we specialize in hand drawn noodles. The noodles are handpulled from dough. It is an art that my grandfather learned in China and has passed it along to all of my uncles. I am currently in the process of learning from my uncles. It is a skill that takes years of practice to perfect.
FUN
Fact.
My favorite dishes are Dry Fried Chicken Wings and House Beef.
The mural on the wall is the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival. It is a panoramic painting and we have just a portion of it here in the restaurant. The artist is Zhang Zeduan. This mural is known as ‘China’s Mona Lisa’.
What do you like to do for fun?
Right now, I am pouring my heart into learning the entire restaurant business from the front door to the kitchen. I’m in the restaurant seven days a week so that doesn’t leave much time for hobbies, although I am enjoying it.
The NEW
LOOK!
Michael’s dad imported all the decór and art, including the mural (pictured on the right)
from Taiwan in the early 1980’s. Being authentic goes well beyond the food at this third generation restaurant. LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | SEPTEMBER 2018

The Next Generation... aged to perfection
here’s a lot happening in Lodi wine country where 85 wineries are putting Lodi’s labels on tables around the world. With 110,000 acres of wine grapes, it’s no wonder the region is gaining looks. “It’s a very exciting time,” Bob Highfill, of the Lodi Winegrape Commission, said. “Lodi is getting more recognition as a world class wine region. People enjoy that discovery of something that is new to them, even though Lodi has been growing wine grapes since the mid-18th century.” While the area has cemented a rep for old vine zins, Lodi grows about 100 varieties of wine grapes and now leads the state in the production of cabernet sauvignon. Most of Lodi’s wineries are now hosting tasting rooms where wine lovers are seeing firsthand how the next generation in Lodi’s long legacy with the vine are making their mark on new wines.
SIERRA ZEITER Assistant Winemaker Oak Farm Vineyards oakfarmvineyards.com Sierra Zeiter grew up in a family of eye doctors but she’s had her eye on winemaking and found a home at Oak Farm Vineyards where she is writing implement procedures, conducting lab work, selecting barrels and getting her hands dirty as needed. “I love Oak Farms and the opportunity they gave me. It’s small enough that I can have a say in the winemaking process,” the 23-yearold Cal Poly grad said. Zeiter said she knows what her peers like and Lodi is definitely winning over her generation with wines that are lighter in style and more elegant. Her favorite? The Oak Farm Vineyards Grenache.
MELISSA PHILLIPS STROUD & HAZEL Vice President of Sales and Marketing Michael David Winery, Lodi michaeldavidwinery.com Melissa Phillips Stroud is the sixth generation to be involved in the family’s business since it started over 150 years ago. Known worldwide for its 7 Deadly Zins, the winery is also a destination for visitors. While she’s responsible for a team overlooking sales, distribution, marketing programming and more, this mom of three is also making sure that the direct to consumer experience at Michael David Winery creates loyalty. “We have a new outdoor bistro and pizza oven,” she said. “We have our Comedy Night Series that sells out every time. We just did our first Family Night, which is free. We are doing monthly music nights, as well.” It all adds up to a sense of community that is attracting people from near and far to enjoy Michael David’s award-winning wines, nosh on good food and make new friends.
HADYN SCHATZ Winegrape Grower Peltier Winery & Vineyards, Acampo peltierwinery.com Hadyn Schatz, 25, is proud to be contributing to the family business, which started in the early 1950s. His dad taught him the ropes and after earning his degree at Cal Poly in Ag Systems Management, he is making his mark. “I’m able to alleviate my dad’s time in the field and allow him to focus more on the winery,” he said. “Right now, we are farming about 1,000 acres with 14 different varieties. We’ve done a lot of redeveloping since I came home, ripping out old grapes and putting in new ones.” Peltier crushed 11,000 tons of wine grapes last year and features a cutting-edge winery, tasting room, and custom crush facility.
JOAN KAUTZ Director of Global Sales and Marketing Ironstone Vineyards, Murphys ironstonevineyards.com Joan Kautz has visited 45-plus countries as director of global sales and marketing for the Kautz family’s Ironstone Vineyards. Today, the winery exports to 50 nations. Kautz, who majored in ag business and foreign policy at Cal Poly, said introducing wine from a lesser known wine-producing region was tough in the beginning but now exports make up 40 percent of Ironstone’s sakes. “It used to be if you live in Bordeaux, you didn’t drink Burgundy,” she said. “But now with the millennials and the Internet, everything is so much more international.” Ironstone’s two top-selling wines are Obsession Symphony and Ironstone Zinfandel. “Seeing our wine on a menu in another country is an awesome feeling,” she said.
TAYLOR KININMONTH Owner and operator, Sip Shuttle, Lodi sipshuttle.com To visit Lodi’s 60-plus tasting rooms, you’ll need a ride. Taylor Kininmonth can get you there. The 28-year-old Sac State graduate was named Visit Lodi!’s tourism advocate of the year recently and started her wine tour gig in 2015 when Lodi had just been named Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. “It was good timing and there was really a need,” she said. “Our generation loves the group experience, so on our tours, you book your seat like on an airplane.” Private shuttles are also available. The tour includes a driver and guide, stopping at four wineries. Tours are now offered seven days a week. Next up, Kininmonth plans a Vine to Wine promotion that includes a barrel tasting with a winemaker plus a food and wine pairing dinner.

the pple Doesn’t fall A far from tree! W ith fall arriving this month, the weather may not live up to its name right away here in the Central Valley, but that doesn’t stop the apples from producing on all the trees near and far. As September comes and goes, and the days grow shorter, it’s the perfect time to start practicing your fall and winter baking skills! Here we share with you, our co-founder’s Greenlaw Grupe’s favorite apple pie prepared with love each year by his wife Anne. With the help of his daughter Sue De Polo, we were able to find her moms recipe book that kept Greenlaw’s heart delighted.
Anne Grupe’sA pple Pie
TO START: Buy your favorite package of two premade pie crusts, available in the refrigerated section at Podesto’s Deli & Market or Trader Joe’s INGREDIENTS
½ cup + 1 teaspoon of sugar (separated) ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg Dash of salt 1 large lemon, juiced 2 tablespoons butter, diced 1 egg yolk, beaten 7-8 green apples, peeled and thinly sliced
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 425°F 2. In a small bowl, combine ½ cup sugar, flour and spices; set aside. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Add sugar mixture; toss to coat. 3. On a lightly floured surface, unroll pie crusts; roll each into a 12-inch circle. Line a 9-inch pie plate with bottom pie crust; trim, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang over dish. Set remaining crust aside. Fill pie plate with apple mixture, mounding apples in the middle. Dot apples with butter. 4. Place remaining pie crust over filling. Trim, leaving a 1/2-inch overhang from the rim of your dish. Fold the top layer of dough under the edge of the bottom layer and press edges together to form a seal. Crimp edges together using a fork or flute with your fingers. Cut 6, 1-inch slits in top of pastry for steam. 5. Brush top crust with beaten yoke of 1 egg; sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. 6. Cover crust edge with 2 to 3-inch strips of foil to prevent excessive browning. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft. Cool on a cooling rack for a minimum of 2 hours.
Now, here is the important part. Greenlaw did not eat his piece of pie after dinner for dessert. He ate his pie the next morning for breakfast with a generous slice of very sharp cheddar cheese! Find all your cheddar cheese needs at Podesto’s Market & Deli.

in memory
A
ugust 7, 2018 brought sadness to our community, and our Lincoln Center Family with the passing of Faye Spanos. “Faye has been a treasured friend and customer at our store and a supporter of Lincoln Center for decades. She was truly one of the most gracious, beautiful and kindest women around. All of us will forever hold her in our hearts.” says Starr Donati of Flair Boutique. A light and rock in not only her own family, but ours too — we will miss seeing Faye day in and day out eating lunch at her favorite restaurants in the Faye Spanos Center, enjoying coffee with friends and family near the Brickwalk, and even reserving parking spaces for her on busy days and evenings. We extend our deepest condolences to Alex, and the entire Spanos family.

Below the Belt: National Ovarian Cancer and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month By Gaurav Singh, MD, Board Certified Radiation Oncologist With the start of fall comes many things - kids heading off to school, the start of another football season, an abundance of pumpkin flavored treats. In all the activity that autumn brings, take time to care for yourself by considering your risk factors for cancers that occur below the belt. September is both National Ovarian Cancer and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States. While ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. Although the exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, risk factors for men include being age 40 – 75, having a family history of prostate cancer, and being African American. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, watch for symptoms such as abnormal or bloody urine, abnormal or bloody bowel movements, and bone pain, and ask your doctor about getting screened today. Women over age 40 with a personal or family history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer should be extra vigilant in watching for early symptoms of ovarian cancer. Symptoms include pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, feeling the need to urinate urgently or often.
Dr. Singh is a board certified radiation oncologist with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of primary and specialty physicians providing high quality and compassionate care. For more information, please call St. Joseph’s Cancer Patient Navigator at 209.939.4526.
This fall, in between the football games and pumpkin lattes, make time to talk to your doctor about getting screened for ovarian or prostate cancer.

ELConcilio BY ARIEL ARMANINO
Jose Rodriguez
Bettering the future of our community through immigration services, adult literacy and public outreach.
Building communities through rising qualities of life making a difference that matters! Local non-profit, El Concilio, is thrilled to be celebrating its 50th year in October. The Latin-based community organization
works across eleven sites in the Central Valley, and strives to better lives, brighten futures, and empower members of the community. “We are very proud of the fact that we’re reaching that 50-year milestone,” said Jose Rodriguez, El Concilio’s President. The multi social service organization provides a variety of services to families and people of all ages, including but not limited to, preschool services, a van transportation program, a workforce development program, and several programs aimed at giving people the opportunity to better their lives through education, such as the GED, ESL, and Adult literacy programs. El Concilio also offers immigration services, such as programs that help community members gain citizenship, and immigration attorneys that aid them in navigating the system. But El Conilio is not only for the Hispanic community. “While initially we primarily focused on the Hispanic community, with time and the need in the community, we now serve anyone who wants to improve their quality of life—regardless if they’re Hispanic,” said Rodriguez. “We’re really proud of that transition because we’ve seen the difference that it makes, and we have so many people that really need our services.”
And it is with passion and purpose that the team at El Concilio has carried out their work for nearly five decades. President Jose Rodriguez has been with the agency for almost 25 years, and has been at the forefront for much of its success. “I love what I do,” exclaimed Rodriguez. “I feel like it’s such a blessing to be able to help people in the community since I was the beneficiary of so many other people’s help. I just can’t believe that I have this tremendous opportunity to work with so many different people and partners, and lead an incredible, dedicated staff, who share my passion of wanting to improve people’s quality of life.” It is without question that the heart and tenacity of El Conilio and its staff is what has driven its success and fostered the enormous amount of good it has done in the community. “We look forward to continuing our
work because we know it’s needed now more than ever,” said Rodriguez. “And we look forward to, hopefully, another 50 years.” October 20th, El Conilio will be holding a gala in celebration of its 50 years at Villa Angelica, home to Alex and the late Faye Spanos. The event is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased on El Concilio’s website. According to Rodriguez, “What we want is for it to be a community celebration. We are really honored and excited that the Spanos family has opened up their home and allowed us to do this, and we look forward to the community coming and celebrating with us and having a great time! Congratulations to El Concilio on this incredible milestone!
