We have a few new changes happening around the Center and I can’t wait to share them with you as they unfold. One exciting project coming this fall is the addition of Chase Bank, Pieology Pizzeria and Café Rio Mexican Grill, located on Pacific Avenue just south of Benjamin Holt Drive. We will provide more details in the September issue of the Chronicle. The list of Lincoln Center winners of San Joaquin Magazine’s Best of San Joaquin contest are listed on page 8. Congratulations to the 23 merchants honored by the people of the region as the best in their category and a big thank you to everyone who voted Lincoln Center best shopping center. This issue’s featured merchant is Performance Bicycle – so appropriate as we ride into the new school year. This 8,000 square foot store has everything a person needs to get from point A to point B on a bike. We also say thank you and congratulations to Anna’s Alterations for her 40-year anniversary of being a merchant in Lincoln Center. After a long summer and getting the kids ready for school, it’s the perfect time for adults to enjoy a little pampering. On page 14 you will find information on five merchants who can get you physically and mentally back on track for the school year. Stockton’s greatest advocate, Marian Jacobs, passed away peacefully July 5, 2016 surrounded by her family. Marian’s advertising career spanned more than sixty-eight years. Marketing Lincoln Center was one of her very first projects. Working alongside Greenlaw Grupe and Roy Sims, she was founder and editor of the “Lincoln News”, forerunner to the current Lincoln Center Chronicle. Marian was a friend and colleague to so many in Stockton. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

OUR SCHOOLS ARE COOL By: Andi Schloss

A

s Delta-goers that have cruised through the water on perfectly-breezed Stockton nights dock their boats, others place countless pool noodles, floaties, and bathing suits into storage bins. Parents pack up the kids for one last visit to Micke Grove’s splash pad (you know – the FREE water activity that has entertained the entire family all summer!?), and baseball-loving families squeeze in as many Ports games as an at-home schedule will allow. Our overwhelming schedules begin to wind down and Valley residents feel somber about their favorite season coming to an end. But parents, frown no more, we have reason to cheer – back-to-school is finally here! Need a break? We have ideas on ways you can relax on page 14. Yes, it’s a time where the chaos of kids running in and out of the house subsides (parents give me a WOO HOO!), but back-to-school is a new year with countless opportunities for our children to learn, grow and take advantage of everything our

local school and school districts have to offer. If your child is in the Stockton, Lincoln or Lodi Unified School Districts, they will enroll in one of 121 local public schools this coming school year, plus many more private schools, and be served alongside approximately 78,000 students. Beyond the regularly-scheduled classes, each district provides additional activities and programs to enhance and encourage additional student development. Mathletes, for example, is an after-school program that allows students to flex their academic muscles. Elle Sandoval of Don Riggio School looks forward to the program each year, and appreciates how “teachers use puzzles and hands-on experiments”. University of the Pacific’s Annual Math Competition provides an outlet for Mathletes to showcase their knowledge; Lammersville School District in Tracy took top honors last year. District GATE programs also encourage academic growth by challenging

SpecialFEATURE students with advanced and high-quality curriculum. Students who perform at advanced grade levels are encouraged to apply. Additional programs for children with special needs is a large focus in each district. Cathy Clark is a resource specialist at Lincoln Elementary School, and boasts about the efforts of the “Student Success” team, who works with students to achieve scholastic and personal growth. Individuals are referred to the team, where they are evaluated and sometimes placed in a multi-disciplinary clinic to reach goals. From occupational and physical therapy to speech and behavioral development, our districts provide whatever tools necessary for student success. In Stockton Unified, a young adult transitional program provides “vocational training, assessment, and ongoing functional academic training” to better equip students with severe disabilities to excel in the work place and other adult settings. For athletic and sportsmanship development, Lincoln ‘Lympics allows students from Lincoln Unified School District to compete in track and field events for individual and team victories. Every year, schools gather alongside the track at Lincoln High School while cheering for their peers and supporting their school. Last year, Sierra Middle School’s victory in the men’s 4x100 relay clinched Sierra’s overall win. Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is offered within our districts “to instill in students secondary educational institutions, the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.” Students develop skills in self-sufficiency, communication, physical fitness, and more.

His solo efforts are credited with saving the lives of his wounded soldiers. Stocktonians have rallied behind Stockton native Nick Diaz, the UFC Fighter who attended Tokay High School. Diaz became a mixed martial arts fighter in 2001. Fighting for the UFC, to Diaz, is a “dream fulfilled”. Additional athletic pride fills the Stockton community upon the mention of Dallas Brayden, a Stagg High School graduate and former Oakland A’s pitcher who became the nineteenth in history to pitch a perfect game. Beyond his incredible talent, we appreciate Brayden’s commitment to our city; he is known for his constant philanthropy and community involvement. So this year, as we stuff the kids’ backpacks with notepads and pencils galore and prepare their sponge-like minds for the 6+ subject curriculum, also make room for an activities pamphlet and sign-up sheet. Most programs can also be found on your district’s website:

Lincoln Unified School District: LUSD.net Lodi Unified School District: LodiUSD.net Stockton Unified School District: StocktonUSD.net

Perhaps these programs play a role in the large number of successful alumni who have risen from our local schools. Among the most notable alumni is astronaut Jose Hernandez, a Franklin High School graduate who, after being turned down for astronaut training 11 times by NASA, persevered and was selected for the program in

On theC OVER

Thank You,

Teachers

O

n the cover of this month’s Chronicle we are honored to feature three retired high school teachers from our county, with over 95 years of combined teaching experience. There is no doubt that these three teachers, and countless others in our area, have made a tremendous impact on the youth in our community.

The group enjoyed catching up over a delicious pizza from David’s Pizza right here in Lincoln Center. Tom’s shirt, shorts and hat are from McCaulou’s Department Store and his shoes are from Fleet Feet Sports. Debbie’s shirt, pants, shoes and jewelry are from FINA. Jon’s shirt and shorts are from McCaulou’s Department Store and his shoes are from Fleet Feet Sports.

One of these teachers is Tom Galvin, former Lincoln High School teacher and coach. Tom worked at Lincoln High School for 34 years before retiring in 2011. Coach Galvin, as many people refer to him, taught everything from Drivers Ed to History in addition to coaching basketball, football and cross country as well as track and field. According to Tom, the best part about his job was developing long lasting – continued on next page

On theC OVER relationships and seeing his students and athletes hard work pay off. Tom has a special connection to Lincoln Center because his son-in-law, Patrick Dobson, is the Vice President of Sims-Grupe Management. Tom enjoys spending time with his family including his four grandchildren, Brady, Stella, Kendall and Reese. Debbie Shaughnessy is a former teacher at Edison High School where she taught all levels of Spanish for over 30 years. She says her favorite part about teaching an elective was the ability to be creative and build practical connections to her lesson plans in hopes of making a lasting impact on her students. To Debbie, it was important that she created an emotional connection with her students, which she fostered not only through teaching but through tutoring and helping with college applications too. While retired, Debbie has stayed involved with the Stockton Unified School District through community involvement and tutoring. In her free time, she likes to travel and spend time with her family. Debbie has

a son, Scott, daughter, Jaclyn, and five grandchildren with another on the way! Jon Gustorf, former Athletic Director, coach, and teacher at Saint Mary’s High School is also featured on the cover of this month’s issue. Jon was at Saint Mary’s for over 30 years before retiring in 2010. From teaching US History and Psychology to coaching basketball and overseeing the school’s entire Athletic Department, Jon has a strong bond to Saint Mary’s. His wife, Pat, is a former math teacher at St. Mary’s and currently works in their scholarship office and his four children, Kevin, Laura, Allison and Elizabeth, also attended Saint Mary’s High School. Jon’s many years at the school led to some amazing memories and experiences, but he said his engagement with the students and watching them succeed was what made his job worthwhile. While retired, Jon and his wife have enjoyed traveling to visit their children and nine n (soon to be ten) grandchildren!

ER or Urgent Care?

Tips to Help You Choose by Benjamin Wiederhold, MD When you or a loved one is facing an illness or injury, it can be hard to determine how serious it is and how soon to seek medical care. Here are a few tips to help you decide: Call 911 if you are experiencing: • Signs of a stroke including face drooping or weakness on one side, slurred or strange speech • Signs of a heart attack including chest pain, pain in left arm or jaw, sudden weakness or dizziness lasting longer than two minutes • Loss of consciousness, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, or a life or limb threatening injury Go to the ER if you are experiencing the following: • Poisoning or drug overdose, severe abdominal pain, pressure or tightness in the chest, head injury with loss of consciousness, persistant or severe vomiting, bleeding that won’t stop or large open wound Go to an urgent care center: • If your problem is not life threatening or risking disability, but you are concerned and you cannot see your regular doctor right away For more information visit: StJosephsCares.org/EmergencyServices

Save money while helping the environment! Dr. Benjamin Wiederhold is the Medical Director for St. Joseph’s Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

St. Joseph’s ER Expansion Project The ER at St. Joseph's is expanding by 8,000 square feet to meet the growing needs of our community. Our new and improved ER will debut in early 2017.

Many people know about recycling, but not many people know how to recycle. If Republic Services provides your service, it’s fast, easy and convenient. Best of all, it can save you money! Make the most of your curbside recycling service by sorting and placing recyclables such as paper, plastic, cans, glass and scrap metal inside your recycling cart instead of your trash cart.
