Maintaining 2 a
Balanced Diet with
Ben Mackie By: Christiana Ferrari
R
ecently we caught up with Lincoln Center’s very own health and fitness guru, Ben Mackie, owner of Ben Mackie Fitness and the new Ben Mackie Spin and Movement. He has plenty of simple tips for staying healthy and hydrated in this hot Stockton heat. Not to mention all the necessary food, supplements and accessories needed can be found in the Center at Artesian Natural Foods, Podesto’s Market, McCaulou’s, Fleet Feet, Trader Joe's and more! Who knew eating healthy could be this fun and simple?
1
“There is no doubt about it, fat filled foods are satisfying, but the notion that fat makes you literally fat is outdated.” Healthy fats can be found in avocados, nuts, seeds, extra virgin olive oil and pesto. Eating more foods rich in healthy fats also help you absorb a host of vitamins, fill you up and of course taste good too!
3
Toss in a “Good” Carb
4
Don't forget about your water!
5
Supplements and Vitamins Too!
“Contrary to popular belief – not all carbs are bad. You don't need to nix carbs altogether.” Try opting for small portions of fiber packed grains such as oats, quinoa or starchy veggies like skin on potatoes, squash and fresh fruit. Podesto’s Market is your one stop shop for the freshest, local produce and grains, that will keep you feeling full longer and your energy high!
“Failing to drink enough water is a major problem, especially during our hot valley summers. You need to constantly consume fluids to replace the ones you lose through sweating.” As a matter of fact, it is very important to drink plenty of water well before you even get to the stage of feeling thirsty. McCaulou’s offers the popular Hydro Flasks which are the perfect solution to keep your water cool as you run around town. Fleet Feet also has a variety of electrolyte replenishment options to keep you hydrated as well!
Choose Lean Protein
“As always, your diet plays a key role in your health and wellness, and a few added ingredients will keep you feeling your best.” Choosing lean protein is vital in maintaining a balanced diet. Not only do proteins like eggs, seafood, chicken, poultry and Greek yogurt speed up your metabolism, but they ward off hunger better than carbs and fats. Stop by Podesto’s Market to find the freshest selection of lean proteins!
Don’t Forget to Add in Healthy Fats
“Supplements and vitamins are a great way to fill in the gaps of a balanced diet.” Studies have shown the health benefits and effectiveness of supplementing missing nutrients. Protein shakes are a great way to not only fight hunger, but can also be a source of vitamins you may not have been able to get through your food. Nspire Nutrition offers a variety of protein filled shakes, sure to cool you down! The staff at Artesian Natural Foods is extremely knowledgeable about any additional vitamins you many need to add to your diet. n

Lunch Box Shopping and Tips on What to Fill Them With! With summer well underway, it is time to start thinking about back to school shopping for your children. Lincoln Center is your place to shop for school uniforms and of course new lunch boxes and backpacks. Zuesters, Sassy Pants, and McCaulou’s have the cutest lunch boxes and water bottles that your kids will love and have just as much fun picking out. Come and get them before they are all gone! Parents, you can't forget that packing your children's new lunch boxes with healthy
food is the most important part! Just like parents, children should stick to similar principles when it comes to a balanced diet. Ben Mackie suggests, “Moms, try to stay away from sugary snacks that are convenient and attractive to kids, and try substitutes like healthier dairy products instead. Water is just as important for children too. As they run around on the playground they need to replace what is lost, try to avoid packing sugary drink packs.”
Healthy Eating on the GO!
Sometimes we don’t always have time to put together a healthy meal. Whenever you are in a pinch but still looking to eat healthy try the Market at Market Tavern! A variety of different items are available, ranging from cobb salads, snack packs, to even fresh chicken, veggies, and quinoa! A Driving Force in the Community By: Katie Kishi
D
ebbie Bond had no intention of running a hearing aid business until 23 years ago, when an employee in the industry suggested she check it out. Now she is the owner of American Hearing Aids, but most importantly, a positive force in the community. Bond has been helping patients through her business for 15 years, and was recently named Small Business Person of the Year by The Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce. “It’s humbling. I firmly believe that being successful is easy as long as you know who to ask and you surround yourself with the right people,” said Bond. “It felt good to represent small businesses in Stockton and Lincoln Center.”
Douglass Willhoit, Debbie Bond and Bakul Patel
Many of Bond’s patients and family members are veterans. This past June, she honored them with her Flag Day event, where she collected unserviceable flags from the community and gave them to the American Legion Karl Ross Post to dispose of properly. Nearly 130 flags were collected, and Bond donated $1,000 to the Karl Ross Post. Several other businesses matched the donation, allowing the Post to continue the work they do for veterans.

Her Flag Day event is just one of the many things she does for the community. She also helps organize We can either the Lincoln Center complain about the Classic Car Show world or we can ask, every year. Her ‘What can I do?’. father, Gary Cox, started the annual Not everybody can event in the late do everything, but I 1960’s, which he think everybody can continued for 13 do one thing. years. Bond helped Debbie Bond her father as a child, ~ and after an 18-year hiatus, she revived the car show and now he helps her organize volunteers for the event. Debbie has enjoyed working by her dad’s side for the Car Show’s entire history and watching the event grow. When there were fewer cars during the event’s early years, her father would drive them in to place himself. Now that the car show has more than 220 classic car entries, the father/ daughter duo now oversees a volunteer
crew of 20+ people who help park all the classic cars. Each entry fee costs $25 and funds the Lincoln Center Scholarship Program, which Bond is very proud of. Her passion for the community fuels her service to both her business and the people of Stockton. Giving to veterans and kids through these two events are among the many things Bond does to serve the community. She said, "We can either complain about the world or we can ask, ‘What can I do?’. Not everybody can do everything, but I think everybody can do one thing." n

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR
MARIA FEDERICO T
his month we caught up with Maria Federico, health enthusiast and owner of Nspire Nutrition. Maria shared some of her favorite things to do and a few of her inspirations. What is one thing you are most proud of? I am most proud of my three children: my son Devin, 32, is a set designer living in New York, my daugher Danielle, 30, is living in Santa Barbara and going to nursing school and my daughter Tayl'r, 24, is a FitCoach here at Nspire. I also have three stepsons, David, Ryan and Eric, two daughters-in-law, Isis and Anna, and four grandchildren, Madison, Natalie, Kayden and Keira. I love that my business gives me the freedom to be able to spend time with all of them. What do you like to do on your days off? On my days off I like to hang out with my husband Ernie and our friends. We love going out to eat, to the movies and going out for a drive. Describe yourself using three words. Fun, adventurous, and driven. Do you have any pets? I have a Jack Russel Terrier named Taco. How long have you lived in San Joaquin County? I have been here for about 45 years! What’s on your bucket list? I would love to travel to every baseball stadium to watch the Oakland A’s play! It would be so fun to follow the team around the United States. What do you like most about working alongside your daughter, Tayl’r, every day? She “Nspires” me to push and grow our business. We build each other up to achieve our goals. She's my mini me!
Tell us about one of your favorite customer transformations. One customer started taking the shakes, had more energy, felt great, continued exercising and lost 34 pounds. She built muscle and shed body fat, she looks and feels amazing. We’ve heard about your free Fit Camps that you do for the community. Tell us about it. Our team encourages the community to come out and have fun with fitness in the park every Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Swenson Park across from Lincoln High School. It's a fun way to meet new people with your same goals and encourage a healthy new you. What made you want to open Nspire? I was invited to a Club in Lodi, "BRIX," where I saw the transformation of so many people's lives. I loved the happy, healthy environment and when I found out I could make money doing this I said, “Sign me up!” What’s your favorite shake on the menu? There is a shake for everyone but I would have to say my favorite is on the secret menu – rainbow sherbet! I really like the Snickers and Orange Julius shakes as well! What would you tell or recommend to a firsttimer at Nspire? Just try it! Our cellular nutrition feeds your body like no other. If you're looking to surround yourself with happy, healthy people try our 3-day trial. What makes your post workout shakes different from your regular shakes? Our 24Line is NSF certified which is the highest standard in our industry, endorsed by Nobel Laureate, Dr. Louis J. Ignarro. Our tri-blend has 24 grams of protein whey and casein. It's a comprehensive performance nutrition line empowering athletes 24 hours a day. It has surpassed industry standards of pre, during and post workout nutrition. And it tastes amazing to boot! n

tockton is a gateway to dozens of amazing day hikes and adventures – suitable for every skill level. Whether you are an avid outdoors person, an occasional hiker or have never done more than a stroll around your neighborhood, there are many opportunities to get outside and soak up some amazing scenery! A few years ago, if you had suggested to Cindy Clarke that she would be getting up in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day to go hiking, she would have laughed. “Our first hike, ever, was New Year’s morning 2015. We had decided to do a Sunrise hike with friends. We left at 3 am, drove to Mount Tam [Mt. Tamalpais in Mill Valley], and set off — in the dark — with flashlights, layers of clothing, snacks and water,” says Clarke. “Kind of crazy, but it was amazing. We made it up the mountain just in time to see the sunrise.” She and husband, Glenn, were hooked. Over the last two years, the Clarkes have taken over 20 hikes — often with friends; sometimes

just the two of them — and most are an easy drive from their Lodi home. Many locals share their passion. “We are so fortunate to live in an area that offers great hiking opportunities no matter which direction you head,” says Stockton resident Ben Blackmun. His “go to” hike is Mount Diablo. “We get up early, pack supplies and are there in about an hour,” Blackmun says. His passion for hiking began a little more than a year ago when he and his wife, Denise, decided to start exploring the multitude of day-trip offerings around their hometown. The Blackmun's loosely plan a hiking destination every other Sunday, and often with other friends. Four years ago, Robin Mesa began hitting the trails soon after some friends shared hiking stories with her. Mesa loves the social aspect of hiking, and finds it to be good exercise, relaxing, and outstandingly beautiful. Her favorite hike is largely dependent on the time of year. “In the cooler months, one of my favorites is Mission Peak — located at the backside of Ohlone College in Fremont; it is an easy drive, and dog friendly. But in the summer, I love the coastal trails. I recently hiked south of Carmel along the coast and it was gorgeous.”

Like Mesa, Clarke loves the closeness to nature and her hiking buddies. “When we are hiking, we are usually conversing — but we always take the time to turn and appreciate where we have just been. And I absolutely love the fact that in a single day and a short drive, I can be hiking, enjoying beautiful scenery, then back home and out to dinner,” laughs Clarke. Almost every hiking destination we have featured has numerous trailheads and paths — some dependent on your level — others on view or terrain preference. “For instance,” Clarke explains, “My favorite (hike) is at Mt. Tam — it is a different one than our Sunrise Hike — it is a combination of 7 miles of trails. We start at the Matt Davis trailhead — cross over to Steep Ravine, and then Stinson Beach. It is unbelievably beautiful — redwoods, grasslands, coastal views, meadows, creeks, a waterfall and even a 10’ ladder to climb.” Whatever your preference of landscape, terrain or difficulty — a hiking adventure awaits in just a short drive away — no matter which direction you decide to take. n
Approx. travel time from the Big L: 2.5 hours You can ride the aerial tram to High Camp and choose any number of trails, or start at the base of Olympic Valley. an Cavagnaro, owner of Cavagnaro Shoe Repair, continues the Cavagnaro legacy of being involved with the upcoming Lincoln Center Classic Car show. He is revving up to showcase not only his own fleet of classic cars, but encourages his many carbuff friends to participate as well! On the cover is Dan's 1938 Ford Fordor Deluxe. It boasts a Chevy Corvette 35 TPI and has a cherry paint job that turns heads wherever he goes. "My dad got this car when I was in high school", states Dan. "Together we rebuilt it three times. The first time because it needed it, the second because dad was bored with it and he needed a new project, and the third – well, that was because my mom wrecked it and we had to rebuild it."
Dan has four other classic cars and drives them regularly. They are on a weekly rotation – a different one parked outside the store every day. His favorite car is the 1930 all original Model A. He loves driving it around town – maxing out at 45 miles per hour. But when he needs to leave town he takes his ‘38 Ford. It is the most fun car to drive and has air conditioning, so it's much more pleasant! Now current president of the Franklin Syndicate, the oldest active car club in California, Dan has followed in the footsteps of his late
father, John Cavagnaro, who served as president multiple times throughout his life. Dan is passionate about the Lincoln Center Classic Car Show as his dad was involved from the very beginning. The legacy continues as Dan now invites his friends and customers to hang out at the shoe repair business during the Car Show. Dan's dad was the original owner of Cavagnaro's Shoe Repair – being bought out by his uncle, Leonard in the 1990's. Now Cavagnaro's Shoe Repair has gone full circle with Dan at the helm as owner. n

Cathleen Olson, embarked on their path to marriage and a family all in the name of the Lincoln Center Car Show and a blind date that led them to their future. Cathleen's cousin, Andrea Peters (now Meinbress), was dating Mark's best friend at the time. After Andrea had spent some time with Mark, she knew he was a perfect match for her cousin. The two finally met on the night of August 17, 2007, and the rest is history! Now ten years later, they've been married for six years with two girls, Aubree, age 4 and Addison, age 2 1/2. Every August, they make it a tradition to head back head to the Classic Car Show and then go out for pizza, bringing their girls, parents and the like! n

Ride On!
Port Stockton Motorcycle Club By: Cort Carlson | Photos courtesy of Port City Motorcycle Club
F
or someone who spent most of his free time in high school as “computer lab manager,” few may have guessed Cesar Larios would one day become the Vice President of Port Stockton Motorcycle Club, one of the oldest clubs of its kind in Stockton. Cesar, web designer at SASS! Public Relations, located here in Lincoln Center, said his fascination with all things two-wheeled began during his childhood when he spent hours riding (and sometimes falling off) his BMX trick bike, jumping over tractor wheels and dreaming of a motorized future beyond his Los Angeles roots. As life took him northward to Stockton, Cesar’s chromestudded, rumbling visions of grandeur took a “sidecar backseat” while he continued to grow in his professional career as a graphic designer.
High on his bucket list has always been to buy a motorcycle – an all-black Suzuki S40, and he did just that a little over year ago. Shortly after, Cesar joined the Port Stockton Motorcycle Club upon a neighbor’s suggestion and one year later he still enjoys the social benefits and philanthropic aims of the Club he helps run. With eighteen active members, the club was established in 1937 and was one of the first of its kind to allow women to join with full membership and when the men were away at war the women kept the membership active. This earned the club national recognition from the American Motorcycle Association. Cesar says the club is family-oriented and open to all. As Vice President, Cesar helps organize “runs” where members get together and ride through the foothills and historic highways of California, stopping at “hole in the wall” eateries along the way. His favorite run so far, called “Trucking for Hospice,” snaked through Gold Country and benefitted the end-of-life care facility here in town. The club has also raised funds for Habitat for Humanity and many others. The club’s 80th Anniversary Run to Lake Tahoe will take place this August 26 and 27 and will benefit the Lincoln Highway Association which helps maintain the historic road built before Route 66 which once spanned the nation. The father of a six-year-old daughter, Cesar said he is sure to be careful on the road and is intent on bringing awareness to road safety when it comes to riding. “My daughter and I like to play a game of counting motorcycles while we drive in the car,” Cesar said. “That way she has fun seeing how I ride on the weekends and it helps her be aware of road safety, all at once.” Cesar’s dream bike is an Indian Scout. He loves the vintage “Café Racers” as well as the all-time American classic “Bobber” styles of bikes. One day he would like to participate in the international “Distinguished Gentleman’s Run” trading the leather vest for a fancy tweed suit alongside hundreds of other riders hoping to recapture the cool man’s look of the 1930s. In the meantime, Cesar is happy with his S40 and has plans to fit the handlebars with grips modeled after the bicycle from his childhood days where it all began. Ride on! n

Lincoln Center hosted the much-anticipated Wine Stroll on Friday, June 16, benefiting Haven of Peace through Junior League of San Joaquin County. We had 24 wineries and breweries placed throughout your favorite shops in the Center. The crowd enjoyed music from local favorites, Lovers Riff, Mondo, Riley Jane and William Sconce. Our summer event sponsors, Big Valley Ford Lincoln and Mercedes Benz of Stockton brought out their best in class cars for all to see. The evening was a big success for everyone, especially Haven of Peace, as proceeds from the event will allow them to continue their mission.
