Speaking of college, many kids are heading back to school this month. This issue is full of great back-to-school information, from fashion trends (page 24) to classroom essentials (page 18). Right here in Lincoln Center, you can find almost everything needed to start the 2015-16 school year off right.

For me personally, the month of August brings much change. After five and a half fun-filled years of growth and development at Lincoln Center, I have been presented with an opportunity for employment at University of the Pacific. I am excited to take on a brand new position as Project Manager in the Department of External Relations on the Sacramento campus, and proud to begin working for this wellrespected local private institution (one that we at Lincoln Center often partner with). My departure is bittersweet, as I greatly value the relationships I’ve developed and the knowledge I’ve gained. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone involved with Lincoln Center, from customers, merchants and management, to security, maintenance and fellow marketing staff. My time here has been more valuable than I will ever be able to put into words. Lincoln Center is much more than a shopping center. It’s a place that offers a sense of community, where children see Santa for the first time and friends meet for coffee to catch up on the details of their lives. The owners and management of the Center believe in giving back to the community that has supported the shopping center for more than 60 years, and the 94 merchants pour their hearts and souls into their businesses. Lincoln Center will always hold a very special place in my heart. I will forever be proud of what I helped create during my time here. And in a way, Lincoln Center will always be considered my home. MerchantNEWS A Message about the Blue Line Flag

Halloween at Best Wishes

At Code 3 Wear, we have had many questions about the meaning behind the Blue Line Flag we fly in front of our store. The Blue Line Flag is flown in support of law enforcement. By no means would we disrespect our American Flag. We are honored and thankful to those that have fought and continue to fight for our freedom and for those that have lost their lives while fighting for our freedom. Meaning of the Thin Blue Line Flag: The Blue represents the officer and the courage they find deep inside when faced with insurmountable odds. The Black background was designed as a constant reminder of our fallen brother and sister officers. The Line is what police officers protect, the barrier between anarchy and a civilized society, between order and chaos, between respect for decency and lawlessness. Together they symbolize the camaraderie law enforcement officers all share, a brotherhood like none other.

Weldon Cheung 1978 – 2015

Weldon Cheung

All of us at Lincoln Center recently lost a friend and colleague. Weldon Cheung, who worked as the manager at LINO BELLA, passed away in June. Weldon had a kind and caring heart. He will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and ability to connect with each and every customer, always providing exceptional customer service (not to mention spectacular gift wrapping!) and positive words of encouragement. He will be forever in our hearts. You are invited to a Celebration of Life on August 9, 2:00 – 4:00 pm at LINO BELLA.

The talented Michael Sweet from Department 56 has set the Halloween Village up at Best Wishes this year! Be sure to stop by and admire his creative design! It’s full of magic and BOOtiful! Michael Sweet from Department 56

hether you’re a boy or girl, child, teen, or an adult, if you love video games, then Gamers ETC. Video Games is the place to go! Everything from new or classic games to all the latest consoles and systems can be found in this store, which has been in Lincoln Center for more than six years. An electronic board inside the store will tell you what their current best sellers are, if you’re looking for suggestions on something new to play. Some of the current favorites are Mario Party 10 for the Nintendo Wii U; Xenoblade Chronicles for the Nintendo 3DS; and Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If you’re not sure you want to buy a game without knowing more about it, you can take fifteen to thirty minutes to play the game right there in the store, free of charge. That attention to the needs of the customers is part of what makes this store so special. Their other big draw, however, is pretty spectacular.

Store owner Liem Tran noticed that there weren’t a lot of local options for group activities for kids, so he decided to turn part of the store into a private party room for gaming. The room, which has several high definition televisions, can be rented out for four to six hours, with rates depending on the number of people. Anything available in the store can be played, and the store will try to accommodate any special requests. The room can be used for birthday parties or tournaments,

“Lincoln Center has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up I spent countless hours shopping and eating in the center. I’m so happy I’m able to share those same experiences with my three boys as they grow up. We do all of our backto-school shopping in the center and it is home to some of my boys’ favorite places to eat (Squeeze Burger and Nothing Bundt Cakes!). No trip to Lincoln Center would be complete without a quick stop at the kids play area, or as my kids call it “The Fruit!” My oldest son Dylan was even on the cover of the Lincoln Center Chronicle back in 2006 with my niece, McKenna.” -Angela McShane

Da-Vid Alejo of POMP Salon

In the hazy heat of summer we have felt temperatures of 100 degrees and beyond. Feeling the tingling sensation of the sun’s unforgiving rays penetrating our skin and hair. I can’t help but keep in mind the stresses placed upon our body and hair by the unrelenting intensity of the sun. Not only has our valley suffered a persistent drought, so have our human bodies. So, as we wrap up our summer escapades of hair bleaching and skin bronzing and venture into the season to come, with gorgeous sunsets and crisp refreshing mornings (and hopefully much rain!), I encourage you to keep some things in mind: Before you head to the salon to warm up your hair….. Wait! Back it up! Let’s start with the term, “warm hair,” a term we often hear from our clients when they really mean something else! Such as, depth or contrast to the summer’s blonde highlighting revolution. When we stylists hear “warm” we see shades of gold, amber, chestnut and so forth. Save your stylist during the consultation period by clearly defining terms and avoid the dreaded phrase, “It looks brassy!” I always encourage my clients to bring in pictures of desired looks to avoid problems with translation. A picture is worth a thousand words and misused terms! And please keep in mind that the celebrity in the picture may have taken three or more appointments to achieve that look.

StyleWATC H These days, many clients are bringing in pictures of ombre and balayage hair. Balayage is a free-hand technique in which a stylist paints the hair much like an artist, creating a custom look. Balayage can create a soft hint of change or a dramatic flair - the choice is yours. Salon speak is slightly different than one may be used to, but narrowing that gap will only aid in creating a gratifying experience. The sun continues to shine brightly and warmth surrounds us and while the kids may be packing up and heading off to school, we are assured of warm days ahead and a plethora of events to come. So, don’t feel the need to throw out your summer glow just yet.

Lastly, let me tell you of a product I have discovered: Sunwater by Fanola. Spray this on your body and hair to rehydrate your skin and mane. It will not only nourish and moisturize, it’ll make your tan last longer. Yes, we are stockists!

he super stylish kids on the cover are Katharine (Kat) Tudor and Damon Karp. Kat is 17 years old and a senior at St. Mary’s High School. While you may not know it because she isn’t one to brag, Kat is a serious basketball superstar! She and her high school team are California Open Division State Champions, and going into next year’s season will be ranked number one in the nation. Kat also plays for CalStars Nike Elite (arguably the best travel team in the country). In fact, it was difficult to catch her in town for the photo shoot, as she had a very busy July traveling the United States with her team. Kat received offers from more than 40 colleges (WOW!) and has narrowed it down to two PAC 12 schools. When Kat grows up she would like to go in to sports management or viticulture (after playing basketball for as long as possible, of course.) Kat is the daughter of Greg and Jennifer Tudor and younger sister to Matthew Tudor who attends San Jose State University. Damon is 13 years old and attends Presentation School. He is in 8th grade and also quite the talented sports star! He plays basketball (Presentation CYO Rams, St. Mary’s Mavericks, and Stockton Port City) and soccer (SYSA Storm) and would like to one day have a career involving sports like his dad, Adam Karp, who serves as the Vice President of Event Development for the International Racquetball Tour. Damon is big brother to Sophia (age 10, pictured on page 25), who is quite the fashionista. She loves picking out clothing from her mom’s store here in Lincoln Center. In fact, if you’re interested in back-to-school fashion turn to page 24 for trends from Angela Scannavino Karp, owner of Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique. n

San Joaquin County Historical Museum What a Special Place!

by Kristen Schlader

T

he cover photo and many others throughout this issue were taken at the The San Joaquin County Historical Museum, which is located in Micke Grove Regional Park between Stockton and Lodi. The Museum displays the charming history of the region that was influenced by the Yokut and Miwok Native Americans, the development of agriculture, and the founder of Stockton and first farmer in the area, Captain Charles Weber. It has four relocated and preserved historic buildings, including the Charles Weber Cottage, the Calaveras School (pictured on the cover), a Blacksmith Shop, and the Julia Weber House. In addition, the Museum has modern buildings with exhibits, including the Erickson Exhibition Building, the Tree and Vine Exhibition Building, the Delta Exhibition Building, the Micke Exhibition Building, the Ag Equipment Center, the McNeilly Exhibition Building, the Rosen Exhibition Building, the Brown-Jones Exhibition Building, the Sunshine Trail Living Exhibition, the Flame Tokay Grape Vines, and the Cortopassi-Avansino Exhibition Building.

The Calaveras School, founded in 1866, is a one-room schoolhouse that was originally located near Highway 88 just north of the Calaveras River. It provided education for up to 28 children in grades one through nine and was one of the last one-room schools in San Joaquin County in 1959. The building was moved to its present location in Micke Grove as a part of the Museum in 1976, where it was restored and then rededicated in 1986. The Calaveras School is well known for its Pioneer School Day Program, which allows elementary students to relive history as a class would have in the 1880s. The Museum exhibits and grounds are open Wednesday through Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm during summer (the Wednesday after Memorial Day through the first Sunday in November) and Wednesday through Sunday 11:00 am – 4:00 pm during winter (the first Sunday in November through the first Sunday before Memorial Day). Admission fees are as follows: Adults (18-64): $5.00, Seniors (65+): $4.00, Teens (13-17): $4.00, Children (6-12): $2.00, and SJC Historical Society members: free. A parking fee is required upon entering the Park as well as additional fees for some special events or exhibitions. Micke Grove Regional Park is located at 11793 N. Micke Grove Road, Lodi. Contact the Historical Society and Museum Business Office Monday through Friday 7:00 am – 4:00 pm by phone at (209) 953-3460 or by email at info@sanjoaquinhistory.org. n

Prostate Cancer – Know Your Risk & When to Get Screened By Paul Lee, MD With Prostate Cancer Awareness month just around the corner, it’s a perfect time to talk to your doctor about your prostate health. Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men in the US - with one out of six men being diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Although the exact cause of prostate cancer remains to be found, there are several risk factors that have been identified, including having a male relative with prostate cancer, being African American, being obese, having diabetes, and eating a diet rich in animal protein. Finding prostate cancer in its earliest stages allows the highest chance for successful treatment. Over the last two decades a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening test has helped to detect more incidences of prostate cancer in its early stages, often before signs and symptoms appear.

Dr. Paul Lee is a board certified urologist with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of health professionals providing high quality and compassionate care. For more information or to learn more about Dr. Lee, please call 209.946.6800 or visit DHMF.org/Stockton.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States. If you are aged 40-55 with increased risk factors for developing prostate cancer, talk to your doctor about getting screened. If you are aged 55 - 70, discuss the benefits and risks of the PSA screening test with your doctor.
