The Christmas season is officially in full swing around here. A couple weeks ago at Holiday Open House, Santa made his first appearance, along with two of his reindeer (…yes, real live reindeer). Families enjoyed train and carriage rides, professional photos in front of our beautifully decorated tree, the Snow Village, live holiday music and other seasonal fun. ongtime owners of Play It Again Sports, Fred Manville and Shally Yang, retired last July before selling the business to Blair Unterseher. Blair had been an employee at Play It Again Sports for several years, making him Fred and Shally’s first choice for new ownership. Born and raised in Lodi, Blair grew up an avid baseball fan - in particular, the San Francisco Giants. He has a true love for sports, making ownership of Play It Again Sports such a great fit. Since 1998, Play It Again Sports has been the go-to for all things athletic, offering great deals on both summer and winter sporting gear. Currently in the store, you’ll find reasonably priced packages for all snowboard and ski supplies including boots, boards and bindings. “We know sporting equipment can be expensive - particularly winter gear - and we want our customers to feel they are receiving more bang for their buck,” Blair explained. Play It Again Sports not only carries new and used supplies, but also accepts trade-ins. Through the trade-in program, customers can bring in used gear and receive cash, consignment or store credit. Most customers find store credit best; that way their old gear can be put toward a new purchase. Blair Unterseher of Play It Again Sports

Michael Sweet of Department 56

The Snow Village at Lincoln Center, one of the largest privately owned collections of Department 56 collectibles in our area, is pictured on this month’s cover. This mesmerizing scene is on display in the windows of the old Campbell’s space. What a magnificent medley of city, villages, farms, snow country and other locales all rendered in tiny detail! Take advantage of this special opportunity to view such a unique and intricate scene; and challenge yourself by filling out a Scavenger Hunt sheet!

Much hard work went into creating this grand display. Thanks to “Santa’s elf”, Michael Sweet (the man behind the magic!), for his attention to detail and creativity in putting together this special village. Lucky for all of us at Lincoln Center, we were introduced to Michael through Julie Van Noate, owner of Best Wishes. Michael is the Department 56 Sales Representative for Northern California and Northern Nevada, selling Department 56 Villages, as well as their holiday giftware (predominantly Christmas) and trim-a-tree offerings to stores such as Best Wishes. His involvement with the Department 56 brand began long before. Looking for a part-time second job in 1989, he found an entry-level position at Avery’s of California, in San Jose. Avery’s was an area

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | DECEMBER 2014

institution; a beloved china, crystal and home décor store with a significant offering of seasonal gifts and décor and where Department 56 Villages were already a mainstay. In a few short years, though he remained part-time at the store, Michael’s involvement was integral to them both. He was offered the manager position in 1997 just in time to work on the major renovation of an area of the store to build out the year-round Christmas shop. That new All The Trimmings shop-in-shop featured Department 56 Villages significantly and was an important and well-received addition to the store for years until the owner retired and closed up shop in 2004. Leading up to the closure, Michael’s search for new employment focused on a couple of his favorite brands that he had been working with and buying from all of these years at Avery’s; Department 56 topped the list. Just two days after Avery’s closed, he joined Department 56, so Michael has been selling Department 56 for 25 years, first to consumers and then to retailers. In that time he has become adept at setting up Village scenes more from personal enthusiastic attraction than as just an on the job skill. Today he recognizes that for many collectors, it is more than just a product and a brand. For many, Villages are a family tradition that is anticipated as an essential part of their Christmastime each year. For others, it is a cherished hobby of collecting, tinkering and yearround enjoyment. Still others happen upon it in a shop window and are mesmerized. For all of the above, Villages transcend what they are and transport those who appreciate them to moments of innocent delight that tug on memories, warm their hearts and leave them wanting more! n

Who is Cecil Rockett? C

ecil is head of security at Lincoln Center, and has been providing security at the shopping center for 30 years. You can spot him riding around on his bicycle, keeping constant watch over the merchants and customers. “I really enjoy my job, which is to protect and serve the people of Lincoln Center. Everyday I feel like I’m providing a useful service by keeping the public safe,” says Cecil. He supervises five other guards and together they keep 24-hour watch over the shopping center. Born and raised in Missouri, Cecil attended elementary school and his first two years of high school in St. Louis where he lettered in cross-country, track and basketball. During his junior year, Cecil’s family moved to Sacramento and he finished school at Luther Burbank High. A year after graduating, at age 19, Cecil carried on his family tradition and enlisted in the military. Cecil’s grandfather, two uncles and great uncle all served in the Army. His grandfather served during World War II, his two uncles were stationed in the states and his great uncle served in the Korean War. Cecil chose the Air Force. Throughout his 26 years as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force, he served four tours overseas: one in Afghanistan and three in Iraq. He is a member of Travis Air Force Base’s 82nd Aerial Port Squadron. While serving in the Reserves, Cecil was hired by a local security company and assigned to Lincoln Center. In 1997, Cecil began working directly for Lincoln Center and was promoted to head of security, overseeing fellow security guards.

Cecil Rockett, Lincoln Center Head of Security

Outside of work, Cecil enjoys songwriting and flying, taking flight lessons on the weekends. He is also a family man, father of 19-year-old daughter, Jordin. “She is all grown up now, but I still remember when she was just a little girl; she means the world to me,” Cecil shared. So, who is Cecil Rockett, you may ask. A man of many traits: a military veteran, a father, and public safety provider. But more than that, he’s a friend. Loved by many, Cecil is always eager to help, lend a hand and a smile. Next time you see Cecil, stop to say hello and get to know the man behind the uniform. n

Skincare Tips for the Winter Season by Bia Riaz & Donna Vincent of Merle Norman Cosmetics

While you are out and about, the winter sun, stress and fatigue take a toll on your skin. Stay refreshed and energized by following a good skincare routine: • Hydrate – Drink at least 24 oz. of purified water with fresh squeezed lemon everyday. Lemon is an excellent source of vitamin C and several antioxidants. Drink at room temperature. Detoxify your body, brighten your skin, decrease wrinkles and blemishes!

Donna Vincent of Merle Norman Cosmetics

142 Lincoln Center (209) 474-0314 Merle Norman Cosmetics in Lincoln Center Monday - Saturday 10:00 am – 5:30 pm

• Cleanse – Cleansing is the first essential step in your daily routine. Everyday your skin absorbs a huge amount of dirt and pollution. Without proper cleansing, both in the morning and at night, your pores become blocked, skin starts to look dull and spots begin to appear. - Wash your face first thing in the morning with cold or lukewarm water (avoid very hot water as it can damage your skin cells) to remove any impurities from overnight perspiration and airborne particles. - Cleansing before bed – First, use makeup remover to ensure completely cleansed pores. (Don’t remove your makeup with ordinary soap. The pH levels in soap strip the skin and leave it dry.) After removing makeup, gently apply a small amount of cleanser to your face and neck. Cleansers are available for every skin type and concern. Rinse with cold or lukewarm water and gently pat dry. • Tone – Using a toner is necessary because it ensures all residue from the cleanser is completely removed. It tightens pores and prepares skin for moisturizing treatments. Choose a toner for your skin type (dry, oily, combination, or sensitive). Apply a small amount to a flat cotton round (instead of a cotton ball which absorbs too much). Sweep gently all over your face and neck. • Moisturize – Start with serum, which repairs damage from dryness or discoloration and brightens skin. Follow with skin-appropriate moisturizers and gently massage over your face and neck. For daytime, be sure to use a moisturizer with broad spectrum sunscreen to protect from both direct and indirect sun. Don’t be fooled by the winter sun! It can still damage your skin, causing hyper-pigmentation and wrinkles. Want help with your skincare routine? Schedule a complimentary one-on-one skin assessment at Merle Norman Cosmetics.

A Few Facts about Laser Hair Removal Q: How exactly does laser hair removal work? A: At Central Valley Dermatology, we use only the best Candela lasers to destroy hair growth. Liquid nitrogen (which is cooling to the skin) is sprayed onto the skin followed by a pulse of the laser beam. With each pulse of the laser beam, only hairs that are in the anagen or “growth stage” will be eliminated. Since only a portion of the hairs will be in the growth stage at any one time, more than one session under the laser will be necessary to remove all the hair.

Q: How many sessions or treatments are typically needed to remove hair? A: Typically, four to six treatments are needed for hair removal on the face. Fewer sessions are necessary to remove hair on the body. The sessions take only a few minutes and should be scheduled four to six weeks apart.

2. You cannot have a tan. We do not want the laser to target pigment in the skin. 3. You cannot wax or use products such as Nair at least one month before undergoing laser hair removal. Waxing and depilatories pull hair from the follicle so there is no hair in the follicle for the laser to target. However, shaving is allowed. In fact, we request you shave the area to be lasered so that none of the laser beam is wasted on surface hair. For more information about laser hair removal, please contact the experts at Central Valley Dermatology. n

Q: Is laser hair removal really permanent? For 95% of the population, laser hair removal is permanent. Hormonal changes in some people can cause additional hair growth. However, for the vast majority of people, laser hair removal is permanent.

Q: Are there any requirements to be a candidate for laser hair removal? A: To get the maximum benefit from the laser hair removal procedure, there are a few requirements: 1. The hair must contain pigment or color. The laser targets pigment. The darker the hair, the better the result.

New to Lincoln Center, Fat City Brew and Grill Supply has some great gifts for the grill-master/BBQ-lover on your list! The Big Green Egg stands alone as the most versatile barbecue or outdoor cooking product on the market, with more capabilities than all other conventional cookers combined. From appetizers to entrees to desserts, the Big Green Egg will exceed all of your expectations for culinary perfection … and with seven convenient sizes to choose from, there is a Big Green Egg to fit any lifestyle!

GrillGrates are interlocking panels that create a new grilling surface on any grill. The three-dimensional design of GrillGrate is unique and new. All grates sear, but no other grates sizzle, radiate or protect. Foods are juicier and more tender. GrillGrates turn any grill into an infrared grill and can be used directly on top of your existing grill surface or as replacement grates for your grill.

The Big Green Egg

1. SEARS: The raised rails deliver superior sear marks from more surface area contact and better conductivity. 2. SIZZLES: The valleys capture juices which steam and sizzle for added flavor, moisture and juiciness. 3. RADIATES: The added mass and shape radiates with heat for fast, even cooking. 4. PROTECTS: The bottom protects against charring flareups and drying heat. Fats drain off without igniting.

A Merry Matrimony S

erenity, selection, style and service are hallmarks of Lincoln Center’s Bliss Bridal Salon. “We offer an abundance of quality wedding gowns that are completely customizable, featuring the best in fabrication and craftsmanship. Our dresses are ‘forever purchases,’ so it’s vital that you love your dress,” owner Tammie Dimas said. Going into 2015, Bliss will carry bridal gowns from seven designers. These include Ellis of London – the world’s oldest bridal company – whose gowns feature hand stitching and beading at every level of design. The salon also carries Martina Liana, a division of Essence of Australia. The label blends couture customization and quality with exquisite styling. “The national trend is color in the bridal gown – blush, gray, pearl. We have a lot of brides who describe their dream dress with straps, also mimicking the national trend, but when it comes down to making the choice it is still strapless most of the time,” Dimas explained. “We know finding the perfect dress can sometimes be overwhelming, so we do everything to try to make the process stress-free, fun and one you’ll never forget.” Sarah Luna, a Bliss bride, can attest to that. “I walked in without any intention of finding my dress that day. After talking with Tammie, I tried on about five different dresses and found the right one,” Luna said. “It was incredible the way Tammie knew so much detail about the material and color, making the process so much easier.” Tammie Dimas of Bliss Bridal Salon

“And the service didn’t stop there,” Luna shared. “She continued to follow up with me to check on bridesmaid and flower girl dresses as we got closer to my big day.”

StyleWATC H Bliss offered Luna abundant choices in attendants’ dresses too. The salon carries four lines of the Dessy Collection; Bill Levkoff; and a new line for spring 2015, Sorella Vita. Maid Your Way, part of the Sorella Vita line, features a convertible dress that can be styled multiple ways by twisting, wrapping and draping the chiffon fabric. Brides – and the entire bridal party – can complete the perfect look for the big day with Bliss accessories: veils, shoes, and jewelry, including beautiful, one-of-a-kind handmade pieces by local jewelry maker BellaFigia. The salon also carries undergarments, lingerie and a great selection of fun pre-wedding wear. Guys get the same attention as gals. Bliss has partnered with Jim’s Formalwear, which has a huge selection of rental suits and tuxedos for the big and tall to the very small and the hottest accessories. Its nationwide network of more than 5,000 stores ensures convenient service and expertise for the out-of-town attendants. In addition to wedding apparel, Dimas offers Fete by Bliss, a complete event planning service with customized packages ranging from orchestrating all marriage-related occasions – announcement through honeymoon – to only day of wedding coordination. Fete also offers destination event coordination, hourly wedding consultation, budget management and RSVP oversight – all with utmost professionalism. With the holiday season here, Christmas and New Year’s proposals will abound. What a perfect time to find the perfect gown! n

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE

The KitchenSide T

he elves have been busy on The KitchenSide getting ready to help you check off your Christmas list! The shelves are full of great ideas for every level of cook. Beginners as well as experienced chefs will appreciate the thought of a new pan, gadget, wine opener, salad spinner... you name it! We have several customers who have started collections of Swiss Diamond non-stick pans and Le Crueset enameled cast iron cookware for their family and friends. The reaction to their gifts brings them back every year to add to the set! Did you know you can find traditional and unique electronics by Cuisinart on the KitchenSide? Wouldn’t a family love a four-slice Belgian waffle maker that rotates for even browning? The perfect hand mixer for me is one with a snap-on storage case to contain the extra beaters that usually separate and hide in my drawer.

Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

Combine an electric knife and a beautiful wood cutting board for the carver in your family! We also have wonderful salt and pepper grinders in a variety of textures and colors, along with an assortment of intriguing salts and peppers to fill them with. Wouldn’t a lettuce knife fit perfectly into a stocking...did you know there was such a thing? Metal is what turns your lettuce brown...we have the perfect thing to solve that! Here are some fun traditional and not-so-traditional ideas for stocking stuffers this year: whisks, cherry pitters, spatulas, wooden spoons, milk frothier, wine openers, veggie pasta slicer, microwave egg poachers, jalapeno pepper corer, kitchen scissors, olive pinchers, tuna strainer, dipping oil, onion goggles, “world’s greatest potato masher”, and don’t forget the dips, sauces, jellies and a spreader or two to go with them! So join us on The KitchenSide this season! We’re here to help! We’re here to wrap! We’re here to make this Christmas fun and easy!
