And because “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” (and making several special stops at Lincoln Center’s North Pole), we’ve decorated the Center to provide our best welcome! Stroll the covered walkways as you shop from many of our 94 merchants; enjoy a Gingerbread Spice latte and Pecan Praline Bundt Cake; listen to live holiday music; or cozy up in one of our many dining establishments. Whatever you do, make sure to spread holiday cheer with other Center-goers, too! “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”, so head into Bud’s Seafood Grille to congratulate our very own Bud and Jeanne Millsaps on their 2016 Merchant of the Year award. Bud and Jeanne have been serving quality food at Bud’s Seafood Grille for the past 23 years. We want to make it a “Holly Jolly Christmas” for the many non-profits and beneficiaries in our Lincoln Center community, and will participate in several give-back campaigns. Donate a new or gently used coat and new socks at 11 different locations in the Center (see page 7 for details). We’ll also be asking you to “Fill the Truck” at our annual Fill the Truck Food Drive on December 10 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in front of both Trader Joes and Podesto’s Market. With so many things happening throughout the Center, and the season, we hope to see you around! From our family here at Lincoln Center to yours, we truly wish you a Merry Christmas!

businesses remained downtown, Lincoln Center would boast an unconventional, yet convenient place to serve as a one-stopshop for Stocktonians, “way out north.” Founders Grupe and Sims envisioned a more personalized shopping experience by creating a tenant mix heavily influenced by locally owned and operated businesses, of which the same sentiment continued throughout the years with their successor, President Dick Haines.

Lincoln CenterSPOTLIGHT Today they sit proudly here, after 15 years and two expansions, as one of the strongest in their portfolio. Through his years at Lincoln Center, Phil, along with his wife, Wendy, and four children, Melissa, Katlyn, Zachary and Charlie have been the faces of not only our Lincoln Center community, but also several non-profit endeavors. Phil is a leader. He is a visionary. He is a giver. A friend for anyone who needs a genuine friend. To me, he is all of the above and a guy I would run through a brick wall for.

maintenance, security, lawyers, merchants and so many more — Phil’s “hat collection” has outgrown his number of years at the Center. Since joining the Lincoln Center team, I’ve been fortunate to benefit from the teaching skills Mr. Haines’ instilled in Phil. I sit back now reflecting on my years here at Lincoln Center laughing at the time I went from roof top to roof top, instructed to count and record serial numbers on HVAC systems in the middle of summer. The advice from Phil on my first task, “if you want to beat the heat, get here earlier.” I’m able to laugh at my frustration, and appreciate the lesson. Phil truly believes, and practices, that in order to be good at what you do, you have to know everything about it. In the shopping center industry, you have to be nimble, listen to what the people want and ultimately you need to make it happen. Phil exemplifies all these traits. That’s why 20 years ago he knew we needed to land the first “boutique coffee shop” that was expanding into California from Seattle — Starbucks, who still remains here as a tenant 20 years later. A few years after that, Phil flew down to the corporate offices at Trader Joes. His mission was to convince them there was a shopping center in Stockton, California that would be a perfect fit for them.
On behalf of all of us at Lincoln Center, thank you for staying true to what our original founders envisioned for our community, Phil. We look forward to many more years of your leadership. Congratulations on 25 great years. Patrick Dobson and Phil Johnson

F
rom the giant HOLLYWOOD letters to the neon Las Vegas entrance, famous and notable signs are awed by people of all ages. And while these carry massive historical significance, we cannot discount Stockton’s own claim to fame in the sign world: THE BIG L. With a history dating over 6 decades, “The Big L” symbolizes Stockton’s finest shopping center and also the people who fill its stores. In 1951, Stocktonians were excited to gain a new kind of retail, dining and service experience at Lincoln Center. Twelve stores were constructed under co-founders Greenlaw Grupe and Roy Sims, with the idea that Stockton was moving north. While most of the business community boasted downtown locations, Grupe and Sims envisioned something different. From Black’s Grocery to Dutch Pride Dairy, and Lincoln Hardware to the Firehouse, Lincoln Center had something for everyone, and shoppers were enthused about the community opportunities
and convenience the Center would offer. Appeal was also enhanced by the Center’s popular slogan, “Live in Lincoln Village and Live”.

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | DECEMBER 2016
SpecialFEATURE Stores would rotate through (as in any retail center), yet three things remained consistent throughout the majority of the years: Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Big L. Santa Claus would drop candy out of a helicopter as an onground spotlight would search for his arrival; the Easter Bunny delighted groups with egg hunts and photo opps; and the Big L would spin brightly year-round. The Big L replaced Lincoln Center’s first logo featuring an active and freckled little boy (many of whom thought represented Greenlaw’s son, Fritz). City Council members feared the Big L would serve as both an eyesore in the community and a distraction from the road. Thanks to Grupe and Sims’ diligence in pushing forward, it would mesmerize both children and adults with its rotating and shining appeal. Ad Art, a Central California signage company, was contacted for the Big L purchase, and plans were finalized in 1954. The “L”, which measures 18 feet in height, is supported by a 97-foot high tower, which is believed to have served as a derrick from a Central California oil rig. Others, however, believe it was originally built as a transmissions tower.
The assembled sign was delivered and planted along what was originally Lincoln Highway (the first coast-to-coast road that linked San Francisco to New York). Charles Bottarini served as general manager of Lincoln Center during the purchase; his son, Jeff, is Ad Art’s current general manager and will ironically oversee this year’s renovation. While the Big L has witnessed generations of change in the center, we’re excited to give it a change of its own. This December, existing bulbs will be replaced with LED lighting, and the white advertising boards will receive a digital screen makeover with brick column supports, allowing more room for advertising, community and Center announcements. In true social media fashion, the Big L is featured on several social media and photography websites; however, it lacks the attention it deserves! We encourage you, our Big L admirers, to post photos of the new Big L (once it’s up, of course!) for a chance to win a $100 Lincoln Center Gift Card. Follow and tag @LincolnCenterShops and #LCbigL on Instagram starting December 16-31 to be entered to win! Winner will be announced January 3, 2017. Happy posting! n

t’s no question, the meat department at Podesto’s Market is second to none. In addition to the superior quality of meats offered, new Meat Manager Chris Torres, is instrumental in making sure you have everything you need to make the perfect meal. Name: Christopher Torres How long have you lived in San Joaquin County? I’ve lived in the San Joaquin Valley all my life, and currently reside in Stockton. Who are the people who mean the most to you? My two children Ethan, 2, and Evan, 10 months, mean the
most to me. My main priority is making sure they grow up to be terrific young men.
per person but it’s always good to have more than enough because you never know who might show up!
What is your favorite sports team? My two favorite teams are the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Francisco Giants. I was a big Kobe Bryant fan up until he retired last year.
How long have you worked at Podesto’s? I’ve been here at Podesto’s Market for 3 years and really enjoy getting to know all of our great customers that come up to the meat counter.
Tell us something unique (or something we may not know) about the Podesto’s Meat Department. We offer dry aged meats yearround. Dry aging really changes the flavor profile of the steak and offers the customer a different experience.
Christopher Torres
What is your favorite cut of meat? You can’t go wrong with a Porterhouse steak, you get the New York and filet mignon all in one. When hosting a party – How do we know how much meat to buy per person? An average serving is 8 ounces
What meat do you serve your holiday guests? I like to keep my guests guessing every time they come over. I almost always serve something out of the ordinary. Last year for Thanksgiving I didn’t cook a traditional turkey, instead I roasted several Muscovy ducks. Everyone loved it!

he new North Pole that now houses Santa, his elves and the ever-wonderful Snow Village is an exciting addition to the Center this year. We hope you make time to stop by (see Santa’s schedule on page 6) at least for a peek inside the magical, winter wonderland. It’s a sight you don’t want to miss this season, and we can’t promise it’ll be the same come 2017. Aside from Santa’s new digs, we are also offering free valet every Thursday, Friday and Saturday through the month of December, making those busy days and nights a little less stressful. Lincoln Center is also a place for you to enjoy dinner, live holiday music and window shop after all the stores have closed.

‘Tis the Season to be Busy Staying Jolly in a Season of Busyness By: Cathy Francis, PsyD, MFT
The hustle and bustle of the holidays can leave even the most ‘put-together’ person feeling emotionally run down. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I know just how important it is to be proactive in guarding your mental and emotional health, especially during the holidays. Don’t wait until you’re down in the dumps to make a change, resolve to live a happier, healthier life today. Adopt these four resolutions for the holidays & beyond: 1. Enjoy the moment. When life feels overwhelming remember to pause and be grateful for the things that bring joy to your life, in this present moment. 2. Simplify your to-do list. Having too much on your plate can be a recipe for an emotional meltdown. Try to scale back your activities and obligations. 3. Be kind to your body. One of the best ways to reduce stress and improve your mood is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Try to eat healthy & get regular exercise, yes, even during the holidays. 4. Try to tame those negative thoughts. Our thoughts and our responses to the cards we are dealt in life can be the difference between living happily ever after and not really living at all.
Cathy Francis, PsyD, MFT, is the Social Services Director at St. Joseph's Behavioral Health Center.
Please note the deadline to submit newsworthy community events to be featured in RSVP has changed to the 1st of each month for the following month’s issue. To submit events email information to chronicle@lincolncentershops.com or visit LincolnCenterShops.com/chronicle.
St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center is committed to meeting the behavioral health needs of our community by providing high quality compassionate care, and creating an atmosphere that fosters communication, trust, and personal growth. Learn more at StJosephsCanHelp.org or by calling 209.461.2000.
