One of my goals for 2014 (or something I’m trying to ‘get right’) is to slow down. I’d like to change how hurried I am—to stop and smell the roses (…or at least notice the roses rather than pass by unaware they even exist!), which means changing the way I treat technology. Or rather, putting technology and my inbox on hold while in the middle of conversations with people. (When did taking a couple of hours to respond to a text or email become so taboo anyways?). If all the information I’ve seen circling the web lately about ‘disconnecting’ is an indicator, I bet many of you have similar goals for this year. Besides, an uninterrupted and unplugged afternoon to enjoy a little shopping, or a nice visit over lunch with a friend, is a relaxing way to spend some time at Lincoln Center. We are thrilled to share so of our many changes that are coming up in 2014. Six new locally owned and operated businesses will open this spring. More about these great additions on page 14. We’ve also got some great events and promotions in store! Brides-to-be won’t want to miss the 4th Annual Strolling Bridal Faire on Saturday, February 22nd (I can’t believe it’s the 4th annual!). Attendees will enjoy talking with reputable wedding vendors and strolling through the Center in search of everything needed to make their big day worry-free. The event is truly a blast, not only for brides and grooms but also for the family and friends they bring along! Anyone planning a wedding will not want to miss the chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes, including a wedding gown from Bliss Bridal Salon and an engagement ring from Gary J. Long Jewelers! There are also some great changes within many of our stores. Podesto’s new indoor seating area is serving as a warm place to enjoy a sandwich from their deli. They’ve increased their online presence with the launch of their new website (podestosmarket.com) and weekly email (sign up to receive their weekly specials!). I’ve also noticed more in the way of organic produce. Tommy Bahama, a popular brand, is now available at three different shops in the Center. Remedy is carrying the men’s line; Theadora is offering the women’s clothing; and Gary Long is selling Tommy Bahama watches. Best Wishes is carrying more kitchenware than ever before, too! The selection of cookware, gadgets, utensils and bakeware is fantastic! With all these new things in the Center, I better get out and shop! Hope to see you out here, too! he beautiful couple pictured on this month’s cover, Cody Diede and Janae Neuvert, were married at Wine and Roses on June 15, 2013. Although they are both originally from Lodi, they started dating while Janae was attending Long Beach State University and maintained a long distance relationship until she graduated and moved back to their hometown. Cody is a general superintendent for Diede Construction and Janae works as a nanny and optician. The couple resides in Lodi and is enjoying newlywed life.
About Janae’s gorgeous wedding gown: Janae purchased her wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, and the dresses for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom from Bliss Bridal Salon. “The first time I went into Bliss I brought my Mom (Monica), maid of honor (Tiffany) and one of my bridesmaids (Megan). Although I was going to try on wedding gowns, my goal for that day was to find bridesmaid dresses because I knew Bliss carried the designer I was looking for. I actually had an appointment to look at gowns in San Francisco a couple of weeks later and was pretty determined to find one by a specific designer that Bliss did not carry,” explained Janae. “At the beginning of my appointment Tammie (owner of Bliss) asked me to go around the store and tell her the things I liked and disliked about some of the dresses in order for her to get a feel for the style I was looking for. I was a little nervous to do so because those that know me know that I can be pretty picky and specific about what I like! However, after looking at a few gowns I saw one on a mannequin and told her it would be exactly what I was looking for if it didn’t have all of the beading detail along the neckline. Her response to that was ‘We can have the designer make the dress however you want it!’ I immediately became excited and told her I wanted to try it on. When I came out of the dressing room my heart started racing and I had a feeling that it was the one! I tried on other gowns and really liked them, but I kept coming back to the first one. After putting the first dress on again for the second time Tammie asked me if it was the one and I said ‘Yes!’ I was not expecting to find a dress that day, but was very happy I did!” n Cover photo by Red Carpet Studios

For nearly a decade, it has been a game-winning plan. The full-service salon and beauty supply businesses, located in Lincoln Center South at 864 W. Benjamin Holt Drive, provide one-stop shopping for customers’ hair care needs. Both are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Cha, who was born in Thailand, attended cosmetology school in Hawaii before moving to Lancaster, California and Palmdale, California, where she opened salons, since closed. In 2002, she moved to Stockton and began searching for a “comfortable” space in which to do hair.

Valentine’s Day Did You Know? E
very year on February 14th across the United Sates and other places throughout the world, gifts are exchanged between loved ones. But when and how did this tradition of Valentine’s Day come to be? The story of Valentine’s Day party remains a mystery, but we know it goes back many years. One story, perhaps the one most widely known and accepted, began in Rome when Emperor Claudius II was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius was having trouble getting soldiers to join his military because the men didn’t want to leave their families. So he decided to cancel all engagements and marriages in Rome! St. Valentine, a priest in Rome, along with his friend St. Marius, continued to perform marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, St. Valentine was sent to prison and sentenced to death. While in prison, it’s believed that St. Valentine fell in love with a girl, possibly the jailor’s daughter. Before his death on February 14th, he wrote a letter to her which he signed “from your Valentine”. In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14th to honor St. Valentine.

ith less than 10% of people donating blood that is critically needed by so many patients, BloodSource joins with the American Heart Association in promoting heart health awareness this February. The need for blood While technology and awareness are helping hearts, the statistics are still grim. Heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. The need for blood is often associated with motor vehicle accidents or cancer treatments, but heart patients are on the receiving end far more often than you might expect. Heart Health Month
H
eart health is a topic near and dear to me, as it has touched my family and me for many years. The reality that I now need to check the box that says “yes” next to history of heart disease, is in the forefront of my mind when I go to the doctor’s office. With heart disease being the number one killer of American men and women, now I am more aware of how to prevent it than ever. There are many lifestyle changes you can make to help reduce your risk of heart disease. Diet, exercise and stress reduction are a few both men and women should know. There are a few simple changes you can make in your diet to help lower your risk of heart disease, such as changing out bad fats for good fats, eating a higher fiber diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and beans, and drinking plenty of water. When choosing oils, it is always a good rule to remember that moderation is key. Even when using good oils and fats, it is important to avoid fried foods and foods high in saturated fats. Switch out soft drinks for water, and snacks full of refined sugars for fresh fruit. Apples are a good choice, because you get soluble fiber from the meat of the apple. When looking for foods to ad dietary fiber, know there are two kinds of fiber: insoluble and soluble. When talking in terms of heart health and lowering cholesterol, you want to increase soluble fiber. Good sources of soluble are flax seeds (ground), oats, apples, sweet potatoes and beans. Exercise is key to health related issues or lack thereof. When I talk about exercise, I don’t mean that you need to become a body builder or run a marathon; simply get out and walk. Tony Vice from Fleet Feet Sports says, “A good rule of thumb for those 30 years and older is moderate exercise 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week. Remember, things like mowing the lawn and chores around the house can count as long as you are getting your heart rate going. 10,000 steps a day is a good goal that gives you a good bit of exercise.” If you want to track your steps or monitor your heart rate, Fleet Feet Sports has all you need from pedometers to heart rate monitors, and even some with GPS. You can also join them for their Tuesday night runs that start at 5:30 pm each Tuesday for the three- or five-mile loop through the surrounding neighborhoods of Lincoln Village. Stress also plays a part in heart disease. Think about it for a moment. When you are stressed, what are some things you may or may not do? I snack on unhealthy foods or simply don’t eat at all depending on what kind of stress I am experiencing. I am less likely to exercise, and I don’t sleep very well. Stress causes us to respond in unhealthy ways such as these, as well as other higher risk behaviors including smoking and a higher consumption of alcohol. Stress also drains our body of key nutrients that are important to supporting a healthy heart, like B vitamins that help to normalize homocysteine levels. You can supplement your B vitamins, but some nutritional sources are beans, grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables, especially dark leafy greens. With simple changes to your diet and adding a good walk, you can reduce stress and help reduce your risk of heart disease. Keep it simple, eat a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits, veggies and fiber, and lower your intake of fat and sugar.
