wo thousand fourteen! What a fantastic year! Eleven new businesses opened at Lincoln Center. Most recently, Squeeze Burger opened its doors. Just before that was FAT CITY Brew & BBQ Supply. This past November and December were especially spectacular! I can speak for our entire team when I say all of us in Marketing, Management, Maintenance and Security truly enjoyed Christmastime at Lincoln Center. (I think I even had a little extra spring in my step!) It was exciting to see the shops bustling with activity and restaurants filled with patrons celebrating the season. I looked for any excuse to get out of my office and down into the shops and restaurants to visit with merchants and friends.

That’s what it’s all about, right? Connecting with each other. That’s what I love most about the holidays and this Center… picking out a gift with help from a merchant who knows the recipient and their taste; walking into a restaurant and being greeted by the owner; unexpectedly running into friends and family while out shopping; being helped by the same friendly clerk at the bank, drycleaner, or grocery store and catching up with him or her. The list goes on. I’m sure those are some of your favorite things about shopping at local businesses, too! We’re staying connected and keeping things local all year long. First off, our Strolling Bridal Faire is back! On February 21, brides-to-be can bring their family, friends, groom, neighbors, bridesmaids (anyone and everyone!) to celebrate their engagement and just enjoy a day having FUN! Many local vendors, from photographers and videographers to venues and event planners, will be on-site for this special event. Our shops and restaurants will offer all kinds of promotions and brides will have the chance to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes (literally thousands, check out page 10). If you’re planning a wedding, you really won’t want to miss this event! Oh and how could I almost forget Valentine’s Day? If you don’t have plans yet, you better get to work. It’s as easy as 1…2…3! 1) Whether it’s an evening in with takeout and a movie or a fancy dinner out, our restaurants have options for you. 2) For gifts, head to their favorite store to select something special. (Fresh flowers from Silveria’s or a nice piece of jewelry from DeVons or Gary Long’s are always good options!) 3) Pick up a card at Best Wishes and you’re all set. Happy Wedding Planning! Happy Valentine’s Day! Happy 2015! Janelle Meyers Lincoln Center Marketing Director

here are dozens of words that could be used to describe Lincoln Center’s POMP Salon… progressive, hip, inviting, dynamic- and the list goes on. Open seven days a week, POMP has been an extraordinary addition to Lincoln Center since it opened June 1, 2014. The sense of excitement within the salon, which is the kind of salon one might find in a large metropolitan area such as San Francisco, is infectious. It is a youthful salon with a clientele of all ages, full of talented stylists who are passionate about what they do and proud of where they work.

Dino Ballin chats with POMP stylists.

FeaturedMERC HANT summed up the progressive atmosphere that brought her to the salon: “There’s something happening in Stockton, and I want to be a part of it.” Raquel also stressed that clients are guests, not just appointments. And with the amenities offered, such as charging stations for phones and mimosas on Sundays, it’s hard to see how anyone could fail to enjoy their time at the salon.

Teresa Garibaldi

“I have a collection of stylists who could work anywhere,” said owner Dino Ballin, gratefully. “They’ve worked at top salons, and the fact that they chose to work here is a great endorsement.” He also added that they are more than stylists- they’re designers. Classes are held every Monday for any stylist in Stockton who wishes to learn about the constantly changing trends of the hair industry. “We want to push the industry forward,” said Dino. “It’s beneficial for every hair stylist in Stockton.” Hair designs from the likes of Paul Mitchell and the award winning, international brand label.m are featured, because Dino and the stylists at POMP understand that hair, much like fashion, is never at a standstill. Having a versatile and dynamic line such as label.m, which has products for every lifestyle and hair texture, is one of the reasons POMP is so cutting edge. Dino hopes that the salon’s presence will have a positive impact on the city’s image. Raquel Negrete, one of POMP’s talented stylists,

LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | FEBRUARY 2015

Teresa Garibaldi, receptionist at POMP, spoke proudly of the salon. “As a receptionist, I see the utmost of creative stylists, and I don’t see anybody walking out of POMP not looking amazing.” She also added that the number one priority is the clients. “You will be pleased with how you are treated,” she promised. When he’s not working hard to keep his salon thriving, Dino enjoys regularly attending Giants baseball games with his daughter. He also hopes to expand the POMP brand, ideally opening up a Las Vegas location in the future. It’s clear that he’s immensely proud of the salon he’s created in Stockton, and grateful to Lincoln Center and his staff. “We have the best of the best,” he said. n

et the Wedding Season begin! We are so lucky to be able to kick off spring with our Bridal Faire and remind everyone what a wonderful “kitchen store within a store” we have with the KitchenSide! Have you wandered the aisles lately? You’ll find all you’ll need for a well-stocked kitchen! Le Crueset French Cookware, gadgets galore, Swiss Diamond non-stick cookware, measuring cups and spoons, bakeware, electric wine openers, and on and on! I tease my friends about throwing a luncheon with a kitchen gift exchange to replace all the beat up things we’ve had in our cupboards since we were all married 25 or more years ago! I’m jealous thinking of how much fun it is to register for things you want and need and receive them beautifully wrapped! And that’s just what we do! Countless brides have taken advantage of our Bridal Kitchen/Gift Registry. We do it the old fashioned way... walk you through, explain the items, and most importantly encourage you to OVER register. Your guests are sooooo generous and so appreciative of being able to purchase the things you really want. Never leave them short of choices! They are even more appreciative that we will wrap them beautifully and they can walk out the door with their gift in hand. And don’t forget our registry is available to anyone, and all throughout the store! If you have a birthday coming up and want to take advantage of letting your friends and family know you have picked a few things out, it’s a win-win! Looking forward to seeing all the new BRIDES-TO-BE on Saturday the 21st. “Best n Wishes” to all of you!

bridal makeup TIPS by Bia Riaz & Donna Vincent of Merle Norman Cosmetics

3. Eyes & Brows a. Use specific Primers for brows, eyelids and lashes to prepare for product application that stays in place and enhances colors. b. Brows - Pro-tips for total perfection: 3 1

1. Preparing Your Skin • Hydrate, Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize • Schedule a free facial to get your skin ready at least a day before your bridal makeup application. 2. Preparing Your Face • Blemishes - Concealers diminish the appearance of blemishes and spots. Gently dab dark under-eye circles and discolored areas with a wand, or use a small applicator brush. • Foundation Primers - Primers prepare skin for flawless makeup application, creating a smooth and even surface and filling in fine lines and wrinkles. Primers minimize the appearance of pores and create a perfect canvas for foundation and blush to stay in place for longer wear and truer color. Apply gently with a makeup sponge.

2

balancing act FOR BROWS “Beautiful brows create the perfect frame for your face. They accentuate your face in the same way a frame complements a picture,” says Byrne. Here are some of her top tips for creating brows that wow … 1

• Foundation - Choosing the right type for your skin for desired look and coverage is key to creating a flawless palette that will enhance and perfect the color pigments in your makeup without creating a shiny glare in wedding photos. Apply small amounts using a foundation brush in soft sweeping motions and blend. Schedule a free foundation check to test out your options.

“Think of your brows as sisters, not twins. If you have one higher than the other, start on the lower brow and make it as high as possible.” Using a brow pencil, build it up from the top and cheat it to create a lift. Create your line or shape as high as possible so that it aligns with the higher brow. “A quiet color like taupe gives them a nice shape and fills the gaps in such a way so they look natural. It’s a lighter shade any hair color can use to create their brow shape without committing to a color. You can always add a darker tone later on.”

2

Once you’ve raised your lower brow, move to the higher brow – continued on next and create your line or shape at the same level as the lower one and fill in.

3

Now that you’ve got the shape, add brow powder in a shade that matches your hair color. You can even use an eyeshadow. The most natural-looking brows are not opaque all the way through. They have dimension, with the darkest shade placed in the densest part of the brow. If color looks too dense, use the spoolie side of the Brows #1 Brush to buff it and make it more transparent.

c. Eye colors - Choose the right look: natural, soft or dramatic that enhances the shape of your eyes. 1) A neutral base color swept all over. 2) Follow with a darker color applied to the crease of the eyelid creating dimension complimenting shape. 3) Apply a brighter luminous accent color sparingly under the brow line and accenting at the inner corners of the eyelid.

Health & BEAUTY e. Schedule a free eye makeup lesson to test out some different looks. 4. Cheeks & Lips a. Choose the right blush for you - Cream or Powder. b. Creating definition and contours: Use a makeup brush to gently sweep blush over cheekbones. c. Luscious lips for every look: Schedule a free makeup lesson to find the right looks for you. 5. Finishing Touch - Finishing Spray - Makeup stays in place all day with an ultrafine mist forming a barrier against environmental factors that can meltdown or dry out makeup while still letting skin breathe. Leaves skin with a comfortable finish that won’t feel sticky or tight. 6. Bridal Makeup Services a. Call for a complimentary Consultation Appointment. b. Sign up for our free Bridal Makeup Workshop.

CLASSIC Cat Eye

Purrr ... fect for everyday! • To create this timeless look, thicken the base line by pressing harder onto the lid. Keep the line thinner in the inner corner and gradually get thicker as you reach the outer edge. • Extend wing just past lashes, out towards temple. Connect the bottom line to upper lash line creating a triangle. Use the precise point to fill it in. • Smooth out any squiggly lines and thicken the wing by retracing your curve again.

yndsey Bryant and Kevin Standart, pictured on the cover of this issue, both grew up in Stockton and attended Saint Mary’s High School. Kevin went on to attend San Joaquin Delta College and Lyndsey attended University of the Pacific. Years later, the two met in Lincoln Center through a mutual friend and had an instant connection. They spent their first date at a Japanese restaurant in Sacramento, talking, eating sushi and getting to know one another. After five years of dating, the couple decided to tie the knot. After a wonderful dinner at the same restaurant where they shared their first date, Kevin proposed. Bliss Bridal Salon was the first stop on the wedding planning agenda. “Tammie (owner) dressed my sister and her bridal party, so naturally I thought of her first,” Lyndsey stated. What originally started as a search for bridesmaid dresses turned out to be much more. “I sat down with Tammie, she asked me what I liked and what I didn’t like and then proceeded to bring out select pieces I had described. The first dress I tried on was the one. I felt comfortable and confident. It was incredible; she listened to everything I described, stuck to my budget and helped me find the perfect dress,” Lyndsey explained.

Lyndsey continued to shop in Lincoln Center over the next few months for other wedding necessities. The flower girl’s dress was purchased at Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique, followed by the mother of the bride’s dress, jewelry and shoes at Flair Boutique. “Starr (owner) made shopping for my mom’s dress a true joy. She dressed her from head to toe and I didn’t have to worry about a thing. We then headed over to LINO BELLA where we were greeted by Weldon, who was kind enough to help me put my entire wedding registry together. The merchants of Lincoln Center made planning my wedding smooth and effortless,” Lyndsey shared. But that’s not all, Kevin and his groomsmen also turned to Lincoln Center for a helpful hand. All tuxedos were purchased at Bliss Bridal Salon as well as all wedding accessories. The rehearsal attire was purchased at FINA and the rehearsal invitations at Best Wishes. With everything in order for the big day, Lyndsey and Kevin were married at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, California on September 13, 2014. Their closest friends and family joined them in celebrating this joyous occasion. The couple currently resides in Stockton, where Kevin is a supply coordinator for St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Lyndsey is a dental hygienist in Lodi. n LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | FEBRUARY 2015

SpecialFEATURE Go Red For Women is about much more than wearing red on National Wear Red Day. It’s about making a change. Here are a few ways you can make a change today: • Go to GoRedForWomen.org to learn what you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. • Encourage your family and friends to take small steps toward healthy lifestyle choices to reduce their risk for heart disease and stroke, too. • Explain “What it means to Go Red” by sharing the following acronym: Get Your Numbers: Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose.

F

ebruary is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease, the number one killer of Americans. The American Heart Association urges everyone to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease by wearing red on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 6, 2015. Like breaking barriers? Go Red! And help break the one against heart disease. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease, yet only one in five American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat.

Own Your Lifestyle: Stop smoking, lose weight, be physically active and eat healthy.

Raise Your Voice: Advocate for more women-related research and education.

Educate Your Family: Make healthy food choices for you and your family. Teach your kids the importance of staying active.

Donate: Show your support with a donation of time or money.

By increasing awareness, speaking up about heart disease, and empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, we can save thousands of lives each year. When it comes to beating heart disease and stroke, change can be the cure. Make a change at GoRedForWomen.org. n

Modeling a Heart Healthy Lifestyle for your Kids By Surinder Raron, MD, Pediatrics The key to a home full of healthy hearts rests in the hands of parents with healthy habits. With little eyes watching what you eat, and little feet following in your footsteps toward the couch or fridge, make it a point to model good behavior when it comes to your health. In honor of National Heart Health Awareness month, take a few moments to think about your heart health and the foundation you’re laying for your children’s heart health now and down the road. The link between high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease is undeniable. Diabetics are two to three times more likely to develop heart disease. Having high blood pressure or high cholesterol greatly increases your risk of suffering a heart attack. The good news is that in many cases these conditions can be prevented by lifestyle choices. Your good looks and great personality aren’t the thing only thing your kids will inherit from you, so make the choice to live healthy for yourself and for your little shadows.

Dr. Surinder Raron is a Pediatrician with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of health professionals providing high quality and compassionate care. To make an appointment with Dr. Raron, or one of our other primary care physicians, call (209) 475-5500 or visit DignityHealthMedical Group.org/Stockton.

Make sure you and your kids get regular checkups and receive all the recommended immunizations. As you “strut your stuff ” throughout the house, do your very best to model good habits for your little audience.

A Gift of Heart From the Heart!

Delta Blood Bank is a non-profit community blood bank that holds local blood drives, as well as a local donation center located at 2888 W. March Lane, open Monday - Thursday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am – 2:00 pm, and Saturday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. our heart pumps blood 12,000 miles per day through the body. When you make a blood donation, your gift can save the lives of up to three people, giving them a chance to continue living, mile after mile. A cardiovascular surgery patient can use up to 25 pints of blood, and a cancer patient about 8 pints per week. To ensure there is always enough blood for patient needs, Delta Blood Bank needs your help! During the month of February, donate blood and benefit the American Heart Association at the same time! Paper hearts will be available for purchase and all proceeds will go to the American Heart Association! That’s two ways to help hearts keep beating in one stop. There is no substitute for human blood. It cannot be manufactured in any way. For over 60 years, Delta Blood Bank has been in the community, collecting from the community, and distributing to the community. In a sense, we are just the messenger for a gift of life that only you can give! Chylee Miller is an 11-year-old girl with Leukemia and an on-going recipient of that gift. When her hemoglobin gets low, she has no energy to do anything but lie down. Blood transfusions perk her up and allow her to continue to fight the disease, as well as do the thing she loves most; play with her friends. Her mom Heidi says, “We are so thankful for donors and the blood bank!”

Donate Blood at Lincoln Center!

Donating is safe, simple, and usually takes less than an hour. It’s an unfortunate reality that many people see blood donation as someone else’s responsibility. Out of those in the US population eligible to donate blood, less than 10% actually do, yet more than 41,000 blood transfusions are needed every day. Become a blood donor. Call (888) 94-BLOOD (25663) to make an appointment or to ask specific questions. Additional information on locations and hours can be found at DeltaBloodBank.org.

April 23 Delta Blood Bank will be on-site for a blood drive.

re you a grilling expert looking for specialty equipment? Are you just getting in to barbeque and don’t know where to start? Look no further than Lincoln Center’s newest addition, FAT CITY Brew & BBQ Supply. Previously located just down Pacific Avenue, FAT CITY not only offers barbeque equipment and accessories, but a variety of rubs and sauces, many of which are locally made. They have also recently made an exciting expansion into home brewing equipment and supplies. Anything you could possibly need to make your own beer at home from the grains, hops, and yeast to the equipment itself, they have it! “Since adding ‘Brew’ to our name, we’ve had tons of people coming in looking for the home brewing supplies,” owner Don King said. “It’s exciting how popular it’s already becoming.” Owners Don and Nadja King are passionate about sharing their love of barbeque with their customers. Instead of a front counter in the store, they put in a bar top with stools so that people can come in and have a comfortable place to hang out. They pride themselves on carrying high quality products and providing personal customer service. Most of the products have at least a 25-year warranty and their most popular product, the Big Green Egg, comes with a lifetime warranty. With the purchase of a grill or other barbeque equipment, FAT CITY offers delivery, set up, and even help cooking your very first meal! Don loves sharing his personal experiences in barbeque with his customers and gives out his cell phone number to everyone, encouraging them to reach out to him whenever they have questions or concerns. “And if we don’t have the answer for you, we’ll find it!” says Nadja. Don and Nadja’s love of grilling started out as just a hobby and something they liked to do together at home. Don loved it so much that he competed in his first barbeque

Six years later, Don and Nadja have created an impressive reputation for themselves in the barbeque community and host their own barbeque competitions around the area, many of which benefit charitable organizations such as Autism Speaks. This April will mark their fourth year hosting a local competition that benefits Relay for Life. Don and Nadja reside in Stockton with their two young children. In their spare time, they like doing fun activities with their kids, such as going to the zoo. Don also enjoys riding his motorcycle around town.
