There are 90 businesses and 800 employees at Lincoln Center, so your support during these 70 days is critical. Please continue to shop and dine at your favorite Lincoln Center businesses. To show how much your support means to us (and to have a little fun!), we’re offering all kinds of exciting deals and promotions during this time. Check out the “70 Days of Summer” offerings on page 11. While you’re here, you’ll want to visit the four new businesses that have opened within the last few weeks: Code 3 Wear, offering police, fire and medical uniforms and accessories; Planet Beach Contempo Spa, offering fully-automated spa services; Nspire Nutrition, serving up healthy meal replacements; and Pomp Salon, an ultra-chic new hair salon and blowout bar. By the end of June, both Tio Pepes Mexican Restaurant and Lincoln Cellar Wine Bar will open their doors. In August, we welcome Squeeze Burger at Lincoln Center South, where patrons can enjoy mouth-watering burgers and fries. In September, Nothing Bundt Cakes will open on the Brickwalk, offering hand-made, premium quality desserts that taste as amazing as they look! We also have some great events coming up. To coincide with the County’s construction, our first-ever Kids Club event will be construction-themed! On June 14th from 10:00 am to noon, families can enjoy live kids music by The After Naps, face painting, snacks, and construction-themed activities such as hard-hat decorating. And of course, the event is FREE! You just need to be a member of the Kids Club. Not a member yet? No problem! Register online (lincolncentershops.com/kids-club) or at the event. Also in June is the Lincoln Center LIVE! Wine Stroll – one of my personal favorites! The Wine Stroll is sure to be a hit with more than 20 wineries, four musicians, tasty hors d’oeuvres and fabulous shopping! Put June 20th on your calendar and purchase wine tasting tickets in advance for just $17. Proceeds benefit Child Abuse Prevention Council. (More information on page 14.) The July LIVE! Shopping Bazaar & Family Fun takes place July 18th and the August LIVE! Classic Car Show is on August 15th.

David’s
New Yorkza Style Piz
F
or Adam Pijl, owning a Lincoln Center business runs in the family.
Pijl, whose parents have Payters Grill and youngest sisters run Zuesters, recently purchased David’s New York Style Pizza. “This seemed to be the right fit, being that it was an established business in the Center,” he said. Two valuable assets came with the purchase, according to Pijl: the favorable reputation that former owner David Calder established and an intact staff that made the ownership transition seamless. The cornerstone of the pizzeria’s reputation is a comprehensive menu whose offerings are made on-site with fresh ingredients. Pijl, who learned the restaurant business during his 27 years at Payters, knows better than to mess with success.
Patrons can “build their own pizza” by choosing from among two crust styles, four sauces and dozens of toppings. The restaurant also serves up numerous specialty pizzas, including the best-selling David’s combo. The family special – a large, two-topping pie – is another customer favorite as are the by-the-slice cheese or pepperoni pizzas. David’s, located at 900 W. Benjamin Holt Drive, also offers appetizers; a soup-of-the-day; salads, including Greek and Caesar; buffalo wings, chicken strips and other fried fare; sandwiches; and daily lunch specials.

Although current offerings will stay intact, Pijl does plan to expand the pizza menu to include a pie-of-the-month and, eventually, a gluten-free pizza. He also will be adding four more beers on tap – Corona, Newcastle, another IPA and a seasonal brew – for a total of eight. The addition allows the family-friendly pizza pub the option of serving a selection of specialty bottled beers. “The craft beers have hit it big, and that’s a concept we’re exploring,” Pijl said. Renovations have already begun with the addition of three of four new TVs – perfect for game day or any other. Soon, walls will be freshened with modern, neutral-colored paint. A single contrasting wall, where the daily specials will be posted, will be blackened with chalkboard paint. “It just needs a facelift,” Pijl said of the approximately 90-seat Lincoln Center South pizzeria. During another type of construction – the 70-day-long widening of Benjamin Holt Drive – Pijl will run a special promotion: Patrons who present a card showing that they have purchased seven large pizzas will get the eighth free.

The KitchenSide I
n our family, summer means hanging out poolside and BBQing! And BBQing means my dinner duties are cut in half. It is the one thing I don’t do that my husband Reid does so well! We will be taking full advantage of what The KitchenSide has to offer including Cedar Planks, Apple Wood Chips, and assortment of Rubs and Sauces. You can’t BBQ without the proper tools and cleaning accessories, and we have those too! All perfect gifts for Father’s Day!
Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes
I especially like Village Gourmets’ Cast Iron Grill made for the BBQ. We have made fantastic pizzas with fresh tomatoes and basil from our garden and it’s perfect for fajitas. My favorite dish though is Grilled Salmon with Pesto. Using a soaked cedar plank and my favorite pesto from Trader Joe’s, I have served friends and family this amazing dish probably too many times! Simply cover your fish in pesto, top with halved cherry tomatoes and grill it on the plank. The pesto keeps the fish moist and adds just the right amount flavor! Enjoy your summer! Happy Barbequing!

All Roads Lead to LINCOLN CENTER
OPEN FOR BUSINESS During Benjamin Holt Construction June 9 – August 17
T
he San Joaquin County Public Works Department will begin construction this summer to widen Benjamin Holt Drive, between Pacific Avenue and Gettysburg Place. The road will be closed for approximately 70 days, from June 9 to mid-August. Lincoln Center will remain open for business during this time and customers are encouraged to use alternate entrances, such as those on Pacific Avenue and Gettysburg Place. Once completed, the project will include two lanes in each direction, a left-turn lane, curb, signal modifications, and drainage improvements. The county will also replace the landscape along both sides of Benjamin Holt Drive with Crepe Myrtle trees, shrubbery and hedges. The project is being constructed to enhance traffic safety and operations and to meet future traffic demands by reducing congestion on Benjamin Holt Drive between Gettysburg Place and Pacific Avenue.

The shopping center merchants have joined together to create fun, construction-themed promotions that will run through the 70 days the road will be closed. “We thought, why not have a little fun with this?” says Julie Van Noate, owner of Best Wishes. “We would like to reward our customers who choose to shop with us during this time. With over 90 businesses and 800 employees in this center, we really need the community’s support!”

“Although the construction will be an inconvenience, we know this project, upon completion, will help increase traffic to the area and Lincoln Center,” said Phil Johnson, President of Sims-Grupe Management, the General Partner for Lincoln Properties Limited, the partnership that owns Lincoln Center. “We hope the community will continue to support the 90-plus businesses located in Lincoln Center during the construction period. Oh, It’s Summer Time. Little League Games, backyard BBQ’s and picnics in the park! Wonderful gatherings, coupled with lots of yummy food, means soda cans and water bottles going into the trash. Keep a trash bag handy so all of those recyclable materials can be gathered. And at the end of the day, drop them off at the recycling center, add to your curbside recycling, or better yet, give to the neighborhood little league team to cash in for their “Championship Game” party!
Available at Podesto’s, Raley’s, delis and local wineries.

Protecting Children, Strengthening Families. “I had no idea you did all that!” This is something we hear a lot from guests at the conclusion of a tour of the Child Abuse Prevention Council’s (CAPC) downtown Stockton facility. For example, did you know that the CAPC has provided in-home intervention services and parent coaching to over 586 families, representing 1,348 children in the past 7 months? And beyond this intensive case-management approach, CAPC staff has provided parent training to another 200 parents through our Parent Cafés located throughout the County. While this may not seem like a lot of people, this work requires parents to make significant life changes - not temporary bandaid fixes – that result in changed lives. And while we “touch” thousands more with our positive parenting messages through community outreach and engagement efforts in elementary schools and the media, the CAPC is committed to helping families with the heavy lifting of making significant, and longterm improvements in their lives.
Stockton Firefighters and members of the San Joaquin Labor Coalition visit the children of the Crisis/Respite child care center.
This work is passionately carried out by seven professional staff that are committed to strengthening families and protecting children. They are part of the CAPC team of 39 full-time employees and 7 part-time and on-call staff, all with the same vision: a safer community for San Joaquin County children.

So what else does the CAPC do? Our multidisciplinary approach to healing families and children includes therapy, advocacy, coaching, training, education and awareness building, and our crisis/respite childcare center - the only center of its kind in San Joaquin County. This commitment to keeping kids safe is echoed in the over 65 volunteers in our Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program who advocate for foster youth as well as the more than 20 volunteers who step into our childcare classrooms to provide another set of hands for hugs, or even help administratively by answering phones and stuffing envelopes!

For over 35 years, the CAPC has quietly gone about the business of teaching parents how to be better parents, offering a safe place where children can heal from the wounds of abuse and neglect, and providing families a roadmap to improve their quality of life. You can be a part of this rewarding work by joining our volunteers or financially supporting the CAPC. To learn more about the CAPC and see first hand how lives are changing for the better as a result of our work, call Shauna at (209) 644-5312 for a tour. n

Healthy Living with Dignity Health Caring for Dad: Keep the Man in Your Life Healthy By Samira Jahangiri, MD
Sherry Glines & Erica West of Theadora
It’s an unfortunate but typically true fact of life - getting men to go to the doctor is hard. Whether the man in question is your dad, husband or brother, chances are he will ignore his symptoms until the last possible minute. As both a physician and a woman, I know how this male-pattern stubbornness can cause the women who love them endless worry - and for good reason. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your man know when it's time to see his doctor. Know His Heart: When it comes to heart health, a good place to start is to know your risk factors. If your man uses tobacco or has diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, has a family history of heart attack or heart disease, if he is obese, if he is inactive or if he is under stress he is more likely to have heart disease.
Kaye Blakely
Sue Dittman, Jane Walsh & Jonnie Sullivan
Heal Those Bones & Joints: If your husband is convinced that his injury is just another strain, let him rest it for a couple days. If it does not respond to rest and ice and it continues to impede his mobility, then he needs to see his doctor. Be Aware of Prostate Problems: Prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 American men. You can help your man by encouraging him to know if he is at higher risk for prostate cancer and also by encouraging him to get screened when appropriate.
Dr. Samira Jahangiri is a family practice physician with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of health professionals providing high quality and compassionate care. To make an appointment with Dr. Jahangiri call (209) 475-5500 or visit StocktonMedicalGroup.org.
This Father’s Day, make a promise to help the man in your life take control of his health.
