ust a few days ago at the International Council of Shopping Center’s Recon convention in Las Vegas I had the opportunity to listen to a keynote presentation by NFL star quarterback Peyton Manning. I wasn’t sure what to expect of a real estate address given by a football celebrity. I wondered how his profession related to mine.
PHONE 209.477.4868
FA X 209.478.1404
“I can’t name a market or a profession out there that isn’t in constant flux,” said Manning. “Don’t be stymied by change; be stimulated by it.” I listened carefully to every word he spoke about being a visionary, game changer, and team player. I guess football isn’t so different than real estate after all.

At Lincoln Center, we have our very own words of wisdom we adhere by. “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” my coworker Patrick Dobson often says. Well we’re excited to announce we’re in the last stretch of one of our “marathons”- filling the former Campbell’s space with a quality business that’s in line with our goals for the shopping center and will expand opportunities for our customers. McCaulou’s Department Store will open this fall, offering men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes, cosmetics, gifts and more. We hope you’re as excited as we are about this wonderful addition! (Find more info. about McCaulou’s on page 12.) On another positive note, this issue features a new section called The Bright Side (page 7). The Bright Side contains upbeat and inspiring information submitted by our readers. Please contribute by sending in short stories of your time spent at Lincoln Center, positive things happening in the community, or even inspiring quotes or books that have made a difference in your life. As you can see from the cover of this issue, the Brickwalk area has been beautified! If you haven’t yet, please come enjoy the relaxing ambiance the shade structures, furniture and flowers provide. Meet a friend for lunch or coffee on the Brickwalk anytime! Plan to attend our summer event series, Lincoln Center LIVE! The first event is a Wine Stroll benefiting Child Abuse Prevention Council on June 12. (More info. on page 10.) We hope you enjoy this Father’s Day issue that focuses on some of the wonderful men in Lincoln Center. From all of us, Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there making a difference in their children’s lives. Janelle Meyers Lincoln Center Marketing Director

hen Gary J. Long Jewelers promises they are “Your Jeweler for Life’s Celebrations,” owner Gary Long wants you to know that he’s celebrating right along with you. “The best part of being in the jewelry business is being part of someone’s joy,” said Gary. Gary J. Long Jewelers has been an established and well-respected business in Stockton since 1983. In addition to running the daily operations at the store, Gary also plays a large role in our community through involvement in a number of different organizations and charities. “I love promoting and being part of this community,” Gary said. “You have to pay it forward if you work in business.” Gary has given his time to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Stockton Sunrise Rotary, Stockton Symphony, and the Better Business Bureau. He has also been elected to the Board of Directors of Farmers & Merchants Bank, is an alumnus of Leadership Stockton, and a past president of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce.
Gary Long, owner of Gary J. Long Jewelers
Gary holds the title of American Gem Society Registered Jeweler, and is a past president of the California Jewelers Association. He is constantly attending jewelry shows to keep up with the trends, so it’s clear that Gary knows the business well. The jewelry selection at the store includes rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and watches. Brands include Belle Etoile, Frederic Sage, Hearts on Fire, The Henderson Collection, Simon G, Spark Creation, and Zeghani, among others. Currently, Gary J. Long Jewelers is the only store in the county to carry a large selection of Hearts on Fire. Quality and individuality are very important to Gary, which is why custom designs are also available. This is a popular choice for both engagement and anniversary rings. “If it comes from this store, I want it to be unique,” he said. Renderings on the computer allow clients to see potential rings before they are created, and all custom design work, as well as most repairs, are done on site.

“I love promoting and being part of this community,” Gary said. “You have to pay it forward if you work in business.” Have any old or broken gold or silver jewelry lying around that you no longer wear? This store can take care of that, too, as they are also buyers of old jewelry and estates. Gary, who was named Business Person of the Year in 2007 by the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, loves the independently owned atmosphere of Lincoln Center. “I would not be anywhere else,” he said. “Seventy cents of every sales tax dollar comes back to the community,” he noted, urging that it’s important to shop locally. “He’s an amazing boss to work for,” said Kim Jones, who has worked for Gary for 17 years. “Lincoln Center is an remarkable place to work, and helping the community is rewarding for all of us.” Gary, who has three children and four grandchildren, says his other passions are golf and people. Helping customers pick out the perfect gift for a loved one is certainly an ideal job for someone who loves people. n

TheBRIGHT SIDE “I love what you’ve done with the Brickwalk area – the comfortable furniture and beautiful new umbrellas. The area is so inviting. Sitting there, I feel like I’m in southern California or the Bay Area!” – Jennifer Tudor, Woodbridge
“I always enjoy roaming through the store (Podesto’s Market) and finding items not readily found in chain stores. Their meat/fish department reminds me of neighborhood butchers we used to shop in where meat was not wrapped in plastic and you could discuss your purchase with a butcher! I wouldn’t buy my Christmas roast anywhere else. The rest of the store is always conducive to shopping for fresh produce, or buying cold cuts by the slice or the pound, as you like it. The variety is almost endless. It reminds me so much of markets in Europe where people shop for fresh items every day. Podesto’s is one of the treasures of Lincoln Center.” – Jean Cornwell, Stockton

Haider Shah, Ben Miller, Jimmy Buffet and his parents, and Dillon Tatum at the Society for the Prevention of Crulety to Animals (SPCA) event in Stockton.
Local Kids Play Role in Rescuing Jimmy Buffet Dillon Tatum, Ben Miller, and Haider Shah were aching to go out on the boat. Their wish came true when Dillon’s father took them for a ride with Animal Control officer Jeremy Crickenberg. They soon found out they were going to be tasked with rescuing a small dog affectionately known as Jimmy Buffet from a mud bog along Fourteen Mile Slough. The cage was lined with kibbles and bits and Jimmy did bite. Lucky for Jimmy his dust up with confinement did not last long and the boys delivered him to his own margarita villa. Good job by the young men. When Jimmy was asked what life on the delta was like, he responded “Ruff”. Dillion, Ben and Haider are students at St. Mary’s High School. Ben’s mom, Diana, works in Lincoln Center at Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique.

Stockton Student takes First Place in Congressional Art Competition Congratulations to Sydney Spurgeon, a junior at St. Mary’s High School, for receiving first place in the 2015 Annual Congressional Art Competition. The competition is part of a nationwide annual Congressional Art Competition intended to showcase artistic talents and abilities of students all across the country. Her award-winning photo was taken of Dr. Edward and Sali Graham’s children, Thomas and Theadora, who were pictured on the cover of the Lincoln Center Chronicle a few months ago. Sydney has entered this competition for the past three years, winning second place her freshman year, fourth place her sophomore year and now first place as a junior. She will travel to Washington DC in June for the artist reception. Since traveling to DC as an eighth grader at Presentation School, Sydney has hoped to return to take photos. Sydney is representing Congressman Jerry McNerney’s Ninth District. Her winning photograph will hang in the Capital hallway, along with the other nationwide winners, for one year.

The Well - Groomed Man
As you may have gathered from my last article, the subject of style and beauty as they pertain to the female arsenal of hair, skin, nails and accessories fits well within my realm of expertise. Although I can go on at great length on any of the aforementioned subjects, today I’m diverting my attention to the male’s needs. I’m sure there’s no argument when it comes to the undeniable preference of a well-groomed man. Think James Bond, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio or any icon of style and you’re likely to conjure an image of a well-groomed man. The scruffy, unshaven and tousled look definitely has its pulse and purpose, but hands down, nothing beats the polished, well-groomed man. He stands alone as a man of taste, substance, class, style and character. David Alejo of POMP Salon
The attention to male grooming in today’s world has reached such an extensive level that the male grooming category is no longer viewed as the category of the “metrosexual”. It is very common and likely to see one’s husband, brother, son, father, etc. using salon services and products. Most hair salons today have expertise in both hairdressing and barbering and can produce both the classic and modern looks men desire. Recently, when a friend was shopping for cologne, he was faced with what looked like hundreds of options. Finally, with his nose tired from sniffing scent soaked cards, he asked the female behind the counter, “What is the best cologne, in your opinion?” She answered, “When women come in to buy cologne for their husband or boyfriend they buy Acqua di Gio 10 to 1.” Here was a person giving guidance who was both an expert in her field and a woman, and knew the reason men wear cologne – for women. Most men want to be and have what women like. Where then, can a man go to get better styling guidance than a hair salon? A salon is expert in this area.
On that note I’d like to delve into what’s on point for Mister Well-Groomed: • Keep your hair tight and clean at the nape with a soft close graduation up to the temples, depending on the desired top length. Note: A tapered side part can add a clean edge to this classic silhouette. This, like most hairstyles, can be dressed in various ways - for a Sunday brunch, use Clean Cut Styling Cream by Mitch (Paul Mitchell) or Pliable Definer by label.m. These products can offer a dry, soft tousled, uncontrived appearance. In addition, products such as Pliable Definer can be worked with all day long as opposed to gels. • For an evening out, incorporating Miracle Fiber or Soft Wax by label.m can offer a subtle sheen with a variety of intensities of hold depending on your mood or activity. • The everyday Joe can get through the workday with Extra Strong Gel by label.m or by “cocktailing” a bit of flex control with Power Gel by Joico and get a day lasting result. In the salon we “cocktail” most of our products. Cocktailing is simply mixing two or more products together on your head to achieve your desired custom look. • Lastly, let’s talk about blazers. Consider adding blazers to complete your well-groomed look. A blazer can be worn with either jeans or slacks, to a sporting event, pub, or restaurant. Remember, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed! If you need help with any of these looks, ask your stylist or ask Da-Vid by submitting questions to david@pompsalons.com. n
Q & A with Da-Vid Q: “I have very coarse, dry hair and typically wash it once a week. I am thinking of using a dry shampoo between weekly washings. Is dry shampoo bad for my hair type? Can you recommend something healthier for my hair type?” –Shelaw7 A: Thank you for the question, shelaw7! Yes, dry shampoo is an excellent option for you. Dry shampoos soak up excess oil from the scalp making your head feel cleaner between washings and are formulated to keep your hair healthy. Another HUGE advantage is that some dry shampoos come tinted, keeping your color looking fresh between services. For healthier hair you may also consider a serum such as ORO Therapy 24k by Fanola which contains micro-active gold, argan oil and keratin. These components fight against the environment, UV rays, chemical services and heat tools. They also prevent and repair split ends. LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | JUNE 2015

Boys & Their BiG Hearts Big Brother, Big Hero By Caitlin Hamer

en Mackie certainly knows fitness. He served as a physical training instructor in the British Army, and received an education from Premier Training International UK before professional soccer brought him to California. He now owns and operates Ben Mackie Fitness, a studio offering personal training, Pilates, yoga, and massage. But he’s more than a personal trainer- he is also a proud volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area.
Ben Mackie, owner of Ben Mackie Fitness, with his ‘little brother’ Deontae
Changing Perspectives. Changing Lives. For more than 50 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Serving counties such as Sacramento, Yolo, South Placer, Yuba, Sutter, and San Joaquin, Big Brothers Big Sisters make meaningful monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 8 through 18. These relationships have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Each time Big Brothers Big Sisters pair a child with a role model, it starts something incredible: a one-to-one relationship built on trust and friendship that can blossom into a future of unlimited potential. Start something today by becoming a volunteer, donor or board member. Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters at (209) 957-0257 or visit bbbs-sac.org.

It’s been over a year since Ben started the application process and got matched up with his little brother, Deontae. Having grown up in a single parent household, Ben felt drawn to this particular organization, seeing it as an opportunity to influence a young person’s life for the better, and the chance to give back to the community that has welcomed him so warmly. “I can be a mentor for him- give him advice, help him with homework, listen to him, and try to teach him right from wrong,” said Ben. “But we also have fun,” he added, mentioning that they often go out for Deontae’s favorite food, burgers, as well as see movies, play pool and golf, and have even gone to a King’s basketball game. Ben stresses that Big Brothers Big Sisters is very much in need of more volunteers, particularly males, as there are many boys waiting for mentors. Each volunteer starts off by making at least a one-year commitment, but ideally, the relationship will last all the way through the little brother or little sister’s high school career. Ben hopes to encourage more people to sign up by reminding them that it only takes a few hours of time, every few weeks. Getting involved with this organization offers people the chance to make a positive impact on the community, while also creating a life-changing connection with a young person who is facing adversity. The benefits of the time put in, Ben promises, are worthwhile. “To see Deontae grow as we go along, and knowing that I’m having an influence, is really rewarding.” n

The “Bundt King” Gives Back By Elizabeth Esau
N
othing Bundt Cakes owners Mike and Beverly Robinson are strong advocates for the Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) and what the organization does for children in our community. The CAPC is a non-profit dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for children by building positive relationships with adults who care about their future, education and healthcare. Shortly after opening the bakery, Mike and Beverly dedicated a day to the CAPC by donating 20% of the day’s proceeds. Through this fundraiser, they were introduced to some of the key people behind the foundation, Lindy and Shauna, and began to build relationships with them. “These individuals are strong, passionate people who truly love what they do—helping others. It’s a wonderful thing to see! Their love for our community is captivating and contagious! I can’t help but get involved,” Mike shared. Last month, Nothing Bundt Cakes helped sponsor the CAPC Ducky Derby, a major fundraiser in its second year. With the help of his staff, Mike not only raises awareness but also spirits. Frequent “bundt visits” to the CAPC are his favorite deliveries. He enjoys bringing bundt cakes, bundtlets and bundtinis to the staff, volunteers and children. “Cake is something everyone can enjoy. Why not share it?” Mike stated. n
Nothing Bundt Cakes owner Mike Robinson (also known as “The Bundt King”) and staff pay a visit to the CAPC Crisis Child Care Center in Downtown Stockton.
Protecting Children, Strengthening Families. The CAPC is committed to the belief that all children have the right to a safe and nurturing home, positive relationships with adults who care about their future, and access to a great education and appropriate healthcare. This uncompromising commitment to the well being of our community’s children is evident in the CAPC’s staff and volunteers, whose multidisciplinary approach to healing families and children includes therapy, advocacy, coaching, training, and a crisis/respite childcare center - the only center of its kind in San Joaquin County. With these tools, the CAPC assists families with the heavy lifting of making significant, and long-term improvements in their lives to better meet the needs of their children. You can be a part of this rewarding work by joining these volunteers or financially supporting the CAPC. Dear Dad, Today may be Father’s Day, a day reserved each year in which I get to tell you how much you mean to me. This doesn’t mean that the love and admiration I have for you is only felt once a year, when in fact, it’s weekly if not daily. I find myself wrapped up with life and forget to express to you my appreciation for the man you are and the man you have raised me to be. A legacy that I proudly wish to continue with my own son. I am grateful for the time you dedicated to me in teaching me the basics every boy should know when becoming a young man. You taught me how to throw my first ball, how to fish, tie a tie, how to groom like a gentleman, how to earn a living and make good use of my monies earned. These are just a few of a mile high list of amazing teachings I have archived in my mind that whether you realize it or not, I refer to on a daily basis. I am continuously learning from you. I love you dad! – Love, Matt
Happy Father’s Day to my amazing dad, George Azevedo. As a child you were my hero. As a teenager you were who I strived to be like – honest, caring, and hard working. As a parent you are the example I live by. I hope to raise my kids as well as you raised my brother and I. I realize now the amount of humor and sarcasm that is required to be a parent, seems to be required to be a grandparent too. Thank you for being my dad. – Love, Lisa
John Lindell
Happy Father’s Day to the greatest dad our family could have ever asked for! Dad, these words of gratitude are just a tiny ‘thank you’ in magnitude of love we have for you and what you have done, do, and continue doing for our family and friends. You are amazing, and we are so blessed beyond words. Thank you for exemplifying the meaning of hard work, faith, patience and perseverance. Love you more than you know! – Love, Kate

Mum’s the Word on Digestive Health By Jennifer McNeil, MD When it comes to issues of digestive health, for so many people, it’s mum’s the word. As a colorectal surgeon, one of the most common things I hear from my patients is “I think I have a hemorrhoid.” This is usually because they have pain and swelling near the rectum – actually the anus – but we have a difficult time in our society using such words. If you think you have a hemorrhoid, it is extremely important that your doctor diagnose you, and not yourself. Other things, including serious health conditions, can cause pain, swelling, and bleeding in that area. Although hemorrhoids can be painful and nearly impossible to ignore, colon cancer may show no symptoms in its early stages. Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women. It is imperative that everyone have a colonoscopy at the age of 50, or sooner if you have a history of colon polyps or colon cancer in your immediate family. By detecting and removing polyps, colon cancer can often be prevented.
Dr. Jennifer McNeil is a board certified colon and rectal surgeon with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton, a network of health professionals providing high quality and compassionate care. To make an appointment with Dr. McNeil or one of our other specialists, call 209.946.6800 or visit DHMF.org/Stockton.
Don’t let fear or embarrassment keep you from getting screened for colon cancer or from seeking the care you need to treat your hemorrhoids. Talk to your doctor today and ask for a referral to a colorectal specialist, if needed.

Oh, It’s Summer Time. Little League Games, backyard BBQ’s and picnics in the park! Wonderful gatherings, coupled with lots of yummy food, means soda cans and water bottles going into the trash. Keep a trash bag handy so all of those recyclable materials can be gathered. And at the end of the day, drop them off at the recycling center, add to your curbside recycling, or better yet, give to the neighborhood little league team to cash in for their “Championship Game” party! It’s easy. Recycle.
