usiness will soon be even sweeter for Chris and Jennifer Whirlow, now sole-owners of Yogurt My Way. “Our biggest customer complaint has been: ‘You don’t offer my flavor today,” said Jennifer Whirlow. The couple recently installed another machine, bringing the rotating offerings of non–fat, sweet and tart yogurt, gelato and sorbet to 10 daily. Flavors always include chocolate and vanilla and two no-sugaradded varieties. The Whirlows will continue to reconfigure the self-serve shop this summer, adding more inside seating and a system that will allow a multitude of flavors to be created from neutral and vanilla bases. They hope that the improvements to Yogurt My Way will bring the shop up a level. “It hasn’t been a cheap takeover,” said Jennifer Whirlow. Even now, customers can create seemingly endless cold treat combinations by choosing from among more than 100 toppings that include fresh fruits, syrups, Jelly Bellies, gummies, candy bar pieces, nuts and bobas – chewy balls with surprising flavor bursts. “So it’s really yogurt their way,” said Chris Whirlow. Despite all the choices, the self-serve yogurt format is simple: Pick up a single-sized cup, load it with all your favorites, have it weighed at the register, and pay 38 cents per ounce. With the installation of the flavoring machine, custom blended flavors will be sold in two sizes at set prices. Large containers are available for home freezing as are cones for those who prefer them to a cup. Four-year-old Kevin Malone, who buried his pink lemonade yogurt under numerous toppings, already seems to think the shop is pretty special.

“I have gummy, gummy, gummy worms,” said the Petaluma youngster, perching on a stool outside the shop. Nutritional facts are available for health conscious customers such as Malone’s great-grandmother, Dixie Mulrooney, whose cup contained a modest portion of vanilla yogurt and fresh strawberries.
