The first LIVE! event of the season is The Wine Stroll, being held Friday, June 17th. More than twenty wineries will join our merchants, offering in-store wine-tasting, hors d’oeuvres, special discounts and ‘gift with purchase’ offers. Join us for a lovely evening strolling through the Center, and learn more about wine parings, while supporting this year’s non-profit beneficiary, Haven of Peace. We thank the Junior League of San Joaquin County for assisting us in getting the word out to our community on this festive event. Yet another example of many people coming together to support our community! Tickets can be purchased at jlsjc.org, as well as on the day of the event at the registration table. (event details page 10) The Wine Stroll is the perfect introduction to our story on our wine region! (page 8) The Lodi Wine Appellation has achieved a beautiful balance of authenticity and refinement, and is now receiving international recognition after being named 2015 Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. This recognition is invaluable to our entire county, and continues to drive the tourism benefits that go along with it. We thought we’d give it a little extra attention. Our 15-plus locally owned restaurants are so diverse you can enjoy cuisine from so many different cultures! This month we take you to Dynasty Restaurant, owned by the Chu Family! Their savory selection of Chinese cuisine has been a staple at Lincoln Center for more than 24 years. I highly recommend the dim sum! (page 6) June also gives us Father’s Day! For me it’s the special day to enjoy the blessings of being a father to my four children. If I got to write the script, the perfect Father’s Day at my house would look like this: I would start with breakfast at Payters or Bud’s; then would jump into my new golf shorts from Zuesters and take in a round of golf with my boys while enjoying a cigar or two from Tobacco Leaf. I would then head home to BBQ on my Big Green Egg from Fat City Brew & BBQ Supply. And the menu? Oh, ribs and filets from Podesto’s, fresh local veggies, along with a big cabernet from Fine Wines of Stockton. Heaven!

wo of the most important things about a restaurant are the food and the atmosphere. When you go to Dynasty Seafood Restaurant, you’re guaranteed an amazing meal in a welcoming and friendly environment, and it’s all thanks to Danny and Irene Chu and Laura Wong, who own and operate this popular Chinese food restaurant. A sign written in Chinese, which rests on one of the walls inside the restaurant, says “Welcome Home”, and that perfectly sums up how the Chu’s hope their customers feel when they enter the establishment. Ever since opening Dynasty in September 1992, they have made it their mission to bring the people of Stockton – and those who come in from out of town – authentic, traditional Chinese food. What they are most proud of is their extensive dim sum menu, which includes a fantastic variety of options, including vegetarian fare. They are also happy to honor special requests if they can. Apart from dim sum, there are also combination plates with hearty portions of whatever main dish you choose, along with chow mein and fried rice. They also offer special family dinners, which can be served for anywhere from two to ten people. Looking for something healthy? Dynasty has you covered with many options including a local favorite offering all your recommended servings of vegetables in one scrumptious dish. From fresh seafood to dumplings and buns, there isn’t much that can’t be found, and you’re sure to find something you love, either from their regular menu or their ever-changing seasonal specials.

by Caitlin Hamer

Considering that there is often a line for dim sum on Sundays, it’s clear that their wide selection – which ranges from classic favorites like pot stickers but also includes some slightly more adventurous options – is what keeps bringing customers back. “We like to see you like it,” said Danny. “It makes us happy to cook for people.” The restaurant, which uses recipes from both Danny’s and Irene’s families, is open every day, including holidays. There is a banquet room, perfect for any special event. And of course, there is take-out, as well as party trays. Dynasty takes reservations, except on Sundays at lunch, which is first come, first serve. Many of the restaurant’s guests are regulars – some even come in daily! A number of guests have been coming to the restaurant since they were children, and have since started coming in with their own families to enjoy the delicious food that has been consistently delicious over the past twenty-four years. “This is a family restaurant,” said Danny. “It makes you feel good that they want to come back.” Danny Chu, Irene Chu and Laura Wong

Irene, Danny and Laura are incredibly thankful for the business they have. “We are very, very fortunate to stay here comfortably for so many years,” said Danny, who is grateful to be located in such a recognizable spot as Lincoln Center. When talking about how much gratitude they have for their customers who have supported them for years, they positively light up. As Irene said happily, “They are not n only our customers, but our friends.”

esidents of San Joaquin County often boast about the convenience of living in an area where they can easily travel to great destinations. North, south, east or west, there are treasures that can be enjoyed within a few hours of San Joaquin County. Yes — nestled between the San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada Mountains — we are right here at home in the northern central valley of California. Let’s just take a moment to look around and savor what others are finally recognizing ... this bountiful land that we have cherished for so many years.

Did you know? There are over 100 different varieties of fine wine grapes grown in the Lodi American Viticultural Area. Lodi produces over 40% of California’s premium Zinfandel. Robert Mondavi, owner of Robert Mondavi Winery, grew up in Lodi and graduated from Lodi High.

8

Welcome to the beauty of San Joaquin County. At the top of the list is the lush agricultural landscape. Fruit trees, row crops — and now gaining international acclaim — the wine country of Lodi. Recently named 2015 Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine, our Lodi wineries are a popular destination! Wine lovers are coming from all over California, the nation and the world, to see what this ‘new’ wine country is all about — when in fact, it has been here for generations. The classic Mediterranean climate of warm days and cool evenings, along with our ‘delta breezes’ creates perfect conditions for growing grapes. The climate, rich soil and the water from two major rivers complete the perfect combination for growing wine grapes in our region. According to Lodi Wine Commission (LOCA), Lodi is the Zinfandel Capital of the World producing over 40 percent of California’s premium Zinfandel. Journalists and wine enthusiasts alike have long recognized Lodi as the home of highly acclaimed Old Vine Zinfandels, with some plantings dating back to 1888. These vines, many of which are still planted on their own roots are naturally low-yielding due to their age and consistently produce high quality fruit. Although expensive to maintain Lodi winegrowers are committed to continuing this California heritage. Lodi currently boasts more than eighty-five wineries, plus a significant amount more throughout San Joaquin County. It seems as if each generation of farming families continues to evolve with popularity of wine tours, tastings, and entertainment melding into a destination for all wine enthusiasts. The ambiance of each winery is unique unto itself. Rustic decor, modern architectural lines, gift shops, bocci ball, deli’s and picnic areas are creative surprises that can be found along the way! Wine tasting is always filled with savory flavors and pleasant surprises for all to enjoy. Whether you choose a private limo, a tour bus, or a casual stroll through the wine country in your own vehicle, each stop invites meeting winemakers, viticulture education and winemaking tricks. Annual wine events are scattered throughout the county, offering barrel tastings, live music and even grape stomps.

Takes Center Stage For those interested in amateur winemaking look into the Lodi Amateur Vintners Association (LAVA), whose purpose is to encourage growth and knowledge of home winemaking by interchange of ideas, research and contact with experts in the field. LAVA strives for high standards in winemaking, to attract new winemaking enthusiasts and to promote the appreciation of fine wine. Eleven professional wineries have grown out of this organization. They hold an annual amateur wine judging competition called the Bottle Shock Open held each summer. n

WINEderful Ideas!

Have you considered blending a group of your friends together for a wine tour? Let’s start right here at Lincoln Center with a few ideas...

#1 The Sunday Brunch:

#2 The Picnic:

#3 Dinner and Live Music:

There is nothing more inviting than a Sunday brunch with friends — well, maybe if it is followed by an afternoon of wine-tasting. Begin your day with brunch at Market Tavern or Bud’s Seafood in Lincoln Center — both excellent choices! Then it’s time to wander through the vineyards and country roads to each winery of your choice. Which winery will be your favorite? And at the end of your day, dinner and dessert at one of Lincoln Centers’ restaurants is the perfect ending to a wonderful experience right here in San Joaquin County!

Apple slices, grapes, a variety of cheeses and fabulous sandwiches from Podesto’s Market and Deli will pack nicely into a classic wicker basket. Add a picnic blanket and you’re ready to find the perfect shady spot to enjoy an afternoon at your favorite winery. Here you are, surrounded by lush green vineyards, enjoying great company, sipping on wine made from the very grapes that surround you, and a basket filled with the perfect picnic lunch. Ahhh.

Music is alive and well in San Joaquin County, especially live music! Wineries have begun announcing their summer concert series. We recommend starting your evening with a group of friends at one of Lincoln Center’s fabulous restaurants! As the sun begins to set, you are ready to venture out to your favorite winery to enjoy a little jazz, maybe some bluesy tunes, or event an outdoor play! Nothing is more relaxing than sitting under the stars, listening to live music, sipping a glass of local wine with friends and family! Before the enjoyment comes to an end, stop for dessert at Lincoln Center on your way home from a wonderful evening.

1. Know His Heart When it comes to heart health, a good place to start is to know your risk factors. Tobacco use, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a family history of heart attack, obesity, inactivity and stress are risk factors for heart disease. 2. Heal Those Bones & Joints If he’s convinced that his injury is just another strain, let him rest it for a couple days. If it does not respond to rest and ice then he needs to see his doctor. 3. Be Aware of Prostate Problems Prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 American men. You can help the men in your life by encouraging them to know if they’re at higher risk for prostate cancer and to get screened when appropriate.

It’s an unfortunate but often true fact of life - getting men to go to the doctor can be tough. Whether the man in question is your dad, husband or brother, chances are he will ignore his symptoms until the last possible minute. Thankfully, you can help your guy know when it's time to see his doctor by keeping in mind the three things below.

MEET VIRGINIA I

Tobacco Leaf by Tara Rushing

f you’re a frequent shopper here at Lincoln Center, you may have noticed a perfectly coiffed, red haired lady walking around, or you have possibly visited with her in her cigar shop. Her name is Virginia Graves — the sole proprietor of the Center’s one and only tobacco store. The Tobacco Leaf opened their doors in May of 1982, and just surpassed their 34th year in business. What is Virginia’s key to success? Customer service. To her, clients are more than window shoppers browsing her selection of cigars, humidors, and lighters. For Virginia, it’s all about the opportunity to build relationships. She prides herself on understanding her client’s lifestyle to better deliver what they need — an experience that is a keepsake in today’s modern world. Her son, Tim, who works mornings, shared a story that he had with a client. The client said, “your mother is a bit nosey, but she’s very nice” to which her son responded, “she is chatty, but she’s trying to get to know you.” That’s Virginia, trying to better understand each client’s intention for purchasing a cigar: your lifestyle, work life, personal interests and your hobbies. Virginia says, “cigars are like ice-cream, they’re perishable.” Therefore, she wants to know if you’re the type of person who’s going to go home, drop them on the counter and forget about them for a few days, or enjoy them right away. Regardless she carefully hand packs each cigar to keep fresh for up to seven days.

Gifts & DÉC OR Virginia doesn’t promote her business via the Internet either, saying “it’s not how I run my business.” Don’t tell her, but if you read her Yelp reviews, you’ll find that each 5-star rating is a testament to her business, with travelers coming all the way from San Francisco, Los Angeles and here in town. Word of mouth is her biggest advocate and if you speak to any of her clients you’ll know why. At Tobacco Leaf it’s not only about the cigars; it’s about visiting Virginia. Whether you’re looking for a perfect, simple gift of humidors, lighters or cigars for Dad this Father’s Day or a good conversation, Tobacco n Leaf is your go-to stop.

THE

bright side Cha Williams

When I think back to early 2000 when I came to visit Stockton, it’s hard to describe how great Lincoln Center looked to me. I parked in front of what is now Starbucks and looked across the street at the salon. I couldn’t stop thinking how wonderful it would be to own that salon one day. I was so in love with the salon and the ambiance in Lincoln Center. My dream came true when I purchased the salon in November of 2004. The past 11 years at VIP Salon have been so much fun. Running a successful business in Lincoln Center has truly been an amazing experience for me and my family. It only got better this year when my son, Wes, moved his barbershop, Homer’s Barbershop to VIP Salon allowing me to work everyday alongside my son and daughter-in-law, Lorie. Homer’s offers a full service barbering experience and it’s the perfect addition to our salon. We are so grateful for all of the support from our vendors and Lincoln Center, because of them we have been given endless possibilities. With the Center’s support and the support of our amazing staff, we look forward to a very bright future here. Cha Williams Owner, VIP Salon

Oh, It’s Summer Time. Little League Games, backyard BBQ’s and picnics in the park! Wonderful gatherings, coupled with lots of yummy food, means soda cans and water bottles going into the trash. Keep a trash bag handy so all of those recyclable materials can be gathered. And at the end of the day, drop them off at the recycling center, add to your curbside recycling, or better yet, give to the neighborhood little league team to cash in for their “Championship Game” party! It’s easy. Recycle.
