omeone recently gave me a copy of The Positive Pledge. It’s a commitment to live a positive life through your actions and influence on others. (Maybe they were trying to tell me something!) Through the Lincoln Center Chronicle, we spread happy, positive news to others. We share what’s new, great and unique at Lincoln Center and in our community. And there are a lot of great things to share! When I meet people in the community they often associate me with writing the Chronicle and their comments are usually very similar…“It’s such a nice, happy publication! I just love reading it.”

We love that the Chronicle is something many of you look forward to receiving in the mail. To take the positivity thing one step further, next month you’ll see a new section in the Chronicle. (We’re still coming up with a name, so bear with us!) It will be a page filled with positive, encouraging information. Quotes that inspire. Short stories that matter. Books we could all gain great wisdom from. To make this new section the best it can be, we’re looking for help from you, our readers. Please send us your positive thoughts so they can inspire others too. Maybe you have a great Lincoln Center story about growing up here, or would like to share a positive experience you’ve had at your favorite store. Maybe it’s an encouraging quote or book, or even a delicious recipe. We’d love to hear from you! Speaking of positive things happening in our community, through the Lincoln Center Scholarship Program, which is in its second year, we awarded six local students with scholarships. Believe me when I tell you all 90 students that applied were worthy of the funds. It was extremely inspiring to learn about these local high school seniors, how active they are in giving back to our community, and their goals for college and beyond. Judy Ayres 1944 – 2015 Judy Ayres passed away on January 15, 2015. Judy ran Venetian Pet Hospital for 27 years, alongside her husband Dr. Stephen Ayres. She can be described as kind hearted and loving, touching everyone she came into contact with. Judy had a young and adventurous spirit about her. Her charming nature was mixed with a streak Judy Ayres of stubbornness that makes her all the more special in our memories. She brought excitement to her marriage, along with unforgettable memories of places and experiences of things Dr. Ayres would never have gone to or done without her. The trips they took to Ireland, Mexico and Hawaii opened up their shared views of the world. Aside from traveling and work, Judy’s main obsession was with her grandchildren. She woke up every morning to a shrine of pictures of her two grandchildren, and was always thinking of what she could do with them next. She was a strong and devoted mother, a caring wife, and a doting grandmother. She will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Stephen Ayres, son and daughterin-law, Steve and Elaine Perry, and grandchildren, Connor and Arwyn.

MerchantNEWS Greek Orthodox Folk, Dance & Choral Festival The 39th Annual Greek Orthodox Folk, Dance & Choral Festival was held in Anaheim February 12-15, 2015. This is a competition open to the western United States where groups from all over compete in genuine folk attire, dancing and/or singing from the same region. Elliana and Andreas Pappas

This year St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church from Stockton had a group of 16 junior high - high school students attend, among those were Elliana and Andreas Pappas, children of Andy and Jennifer Pappas of Papapavlo’s Bistro & Bar. They competed in both the dance and choral competitions and won three awards under the direction of Maria and Dimitri Karapanos (dancing) and Presvytera Angie Sotiras (choral). Father Pete Sotiras also attended. Musicians traveled from Greece to provide live music for the dancers, whose group was named AnayEnnisi. The awards won were: 3rd place in the Intermediate Division for dancing, 2nd place in Choral, and Special Achievement in Choral. We are extremely proud of them as the dancing and singing (all in Greek) requires months of dedicated practice. These young adults deserve to be recognized for their achievements.

Melissa Ann Galvin-Dobson 1980 – 2015 Many of us at Lincoln Center have heavy hearts over the loss of Melissa Galvin-Dobson, wife of Patrick Dobson of Sims-Grupe Management, the company that operates Lincoln Center. Melissa danced into heaven on January 24, 2015 at the age of 34. Melissa Ann Galvin-Dobson A Stockton native, Melissa graduated from Lincoln High School and attended University of the Pacific. She married Patrick Dobson and they were blessed with two children, Brady (8) and Stella (4). At the age of 18, Melissa began a fourteen-year career with the 49er organization as a Gold Rush Cheerleader for seven years. She continued on with the organization as host of 49ers Total Access, and Assistant Director of the Gold Rush. Melissa was proud that she never missed a home game in fourteen years. Her passion for dance and love for teaching led to opening her own studio, Dance Xtreme in Stockton. She was a teacher, mentor and role model to many young dancers. Her creativity as a seasoned choreographer was reflected in her epic dance recitals. She touched many lives, and accomplished so much in her 34 years. Melissa battled breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2011 and again in July of 2014. Yet through it all, her smile was contagious, her battle courageous, and her passion for life kept her dancing.

St. Basil’s Greek Festival group

In addition to her husband Patrick, and children Brady and Stella, Melissa is survived by her father Tom Galvin, sister Leann Galvin Thompson (Greg), nieces Kendall and Reese, father-in-law and mother-in-law Kevin and Susan Dobson, brother-in-law Sean Dobson (Meghan), sister-in-law Mariah, aunt Kathy Gallagher and cousins Ryan and Tara Gallagher. She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Linda Galvin, with whom - we are sure - Melissa is dancing with in heaven today. Melissa was often spotted shopping in Lincoln Center with her sister Leann. The merchants and Lincoln Center family will truly miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are with Patrick and their family.

Louie Salad, Vegan Stack and ever-popular cheese burger, which happens to only be $10. “We value quality over quantity. orn and raised in Stockton, Chef Michael Midgley is no stranger to food. “Every Sunday, my family and I would gather together for dinner. Each member would bring a favorite dish of their choosing and we would feast, enjoying each other’s company and food,” Midgley shared. After graduating the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, Midgley headed for stardom with his first appearance on Top Chef. Soon after, Midgley appeared as a judge on Esquire’s Knife Fight and won Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen. Now, the nationally recognized chef has returned to his roots to pursue the lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant.

Midgley’s Public House is a family owned and operated restaurant. “My wife, Laci and I are here day in and day out. We love what we do. While I am in the kitchen cooking, Laci is usually greeting customers, serving or bartending. We make it a priority to visit with our patrons to introduce the restaurant, food and ourselves,” Midgley conveyed. “My passions in life are my family and restaurant so I try incorporate both in my daily routine. Due to the fact Laci and I are continuously at the restaurant, we often bring in the kids to join in on the fun,” Midgley expressed. The Midgleys have three children: Taylor (6), Mikey (4) and Morgan (2). If you haven’t already, stop in for lunch or dinner and enjoy the expansive, newly redesigned patio, fully equipped with outdoor heaters for those chilly evenings. n

Healthy Living with Dignity Health How to Heal Your Heel Pain Matthew J. Takeuchi, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine If you have pain on the bottom of your heel that’s worse in the morning, or after you’ve been sitting for a while, you are probably suffering from plantar fasciitis - one of the most common foot problems. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (plantar fascia) that extends from the bottom of the heel to the base of the toes. When this tissue is inflamed, you feel pain on the bottom of your heel and sometimes in the arch. Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury that is generally caused by spending too much time on your feet. It is often seen in people working in retail, construction, and health care. Some people get it without an obvious cause. Athletes, especially runners and basketball players, can develop it too. People with overly flat or high-arched feet can be prone to developing plantar fasciitis. Obesity is another contributing factor. A foot and ankle specialist can diagnose plantar fasciitis by performing a simple history and physical examination. Fortunately, over 90% of patients get better with conservative care. Non-surgical treatment includes stretching, ice, anti-inflammatory medication, injection, arch supports, foot brace, and physical therapy. Full recovery can takes weeks, but occasionally months. A small percentage of patients may require surgery, but usually only after months of conservative care has failed to relieve pain adequately. Surgery has high patient satisfaction, low risk of complications, and a quick recovery.

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE

The KitchenSide W Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

ith Easter right around the corner I can’t help but remember beautiful spring mornings that began at sunrise with an egg hunt followed by some sort of delicious breakfast. Many times it would be a small gathering and the kids dictated the menu, but my favorite thing on Easter is EGGS BENIDICT. Why I thought I could make them for 20 or so people and serve them all HOT at the same time is beyond me. The English muffin, buttered, placed on cooking sheets (USA cookie sheets) to toast was easy. You can do a lot of those at once. Slipping the Canadian bacon on top to warm is a cinch! But the dreaded poached eggs! Forty eggs all cooked to perfection, ready all at the same time!? RIGHT! With the help of my mom and my stove covered with pans full of boiling water we managed to pull it off. But I knew there HAD to be an easier way. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across other people in the same boat. But they were smart enough to come up with a fantastic solution... MUFFIN TINS! My store is full of muffin tins! So I decided to give it a try... and it works! Perfect eggs! The whites don’t drift off to the other side of the pan either! No white eggy mess on my pans to clean up! So I share with all of you my new secret...

Perfect Oven Poached Eggs • 2 cups water

• 6 large eggs

Heat oven to 400 degrees Bring about 2 cups of water to a boil (stove or microwave) Pour about 2 tablespoons of boiling water into each tin in a muffin tin (Regular or large both work fine. It just depends on the shape you want your finished egg.) Crack an egg into each tin. Pour about 2 more tablespoons of water on top of each egg. Bake in the oven for exactly 6 minutes. This will make your whites firm but the yolks still runny. Obviously more eggs, more pans! And we have the best muffin tins made by USA pans... blueberry muffins will fill the pans prior to the eggs and those too turn out perfect every time with the help of my USA pans. So give it a try... toasted English muffins, Canadian bacon, your perfectly poached eggs topped with your favorite hollandaise sauce. Sometimes I top them with a few baby shrimp but I always serve them with cooled steamed asparagus, fresh fruit and muffins.

The Color of the Year An excerpt from the Lincoln Center Blog by Melissa Johnson

Marsala: A naturally robust and earthy wine red has been named Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2015. Pantone has been naming the color of the year for more than 50 years, and with their recognition comes all the new trends. Check out this list for ways to incorporate Marsala into your style. 2. Lipstick

Melissa Johnson

One of the hottest trends this year is adding a fun lip color to your makeup routine. Try going with Marsala for your next look. The deep red is great for daytime and transitions easily for evening looks too.

1. Nail Color This nail color is a clean and pretty look. Find OPI nail polish at Merle Norman Cosmetics or VIP Salon & Supply.

Five Do’s & Don’ts for Spring 1. Don’t impulsively chop off your hair for the sake of a new look. Do your research. Collect several different options for both lengths and styles. Magazines, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook are wonderful tools for this. You may even find a local stylist showcasing his/her work on these sites. Use these tools to avoid weeks of frustrating hair flops!

David Alejo of POMP Salon

2. Do proportion control when going blonde. Gradually incorporate lighter hues. To keep your hair healthy, expect going blonde to be a multi-step process. Lifting your color more than four levels in one session is not recommended by most color product companies. Also, PLEASE use good professional products to support distressed hair. Ask your stylist for recommendations on what products to purchase and how to properly use them. 3. Don’t overwhelm your head with an explosion of color. Do some preparation. Coordinate wardrobe options and makeup tones that compliment your new look. A summer’s halo doesn’t compliment a winter’s face, so switch a few things out to make a world of difference. 4. Do some prevention to protect from over processing your skin. Feed your body with warm moisturizing tints and let the sun add a nice glow. A little goes a long way. Most experts agree that the highest levels of SPF are not necessary. Anything over 30 SPF may be overkill. 5. Finally, Do yourself a favor and don’t underestimate your possibilities! Change comes in many shapes and forms, from sassy, bold, flirty and edgy to just a little twist on a timeless classic. Ask yourself, “Is my desire to feel safe and accepted enslaving me to boredom?” Take some chances you’ll thank yourself! Are you faced with a fashion or hair dilemma? There’s no need to brave it alone. Consult your stylist or ask me. Any question worth asking is worthy of a thoughtful, insightful answer. Email questions to david@pompsalons.com n

Thomas and Theadora are the children of Dr. Edward and Sali Graham. Thomas, who will turn four on March 25, has a fascination with garbage trucks! He loves watching garbage truck videos online, playing with garbage trucks, and is excited when the real garbage truck comes to his house. He also enjoys spending time with his sister, golfing with his older brother Christopher (age 17), and playing catch with his dad. Theadora is two and a half years old and tougher than she looks! She loves wrestling with her two older brothers. The children were a blast to photograph and looked especially adorable in their outfits from Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique. Thank you to Dr. Edward and Sali Graham, Jim and Connie from Silveria’s Flowers and Gifts, and Angela from Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique. SpecialFEATURE in Community our

Literacy T

he stage is larger than it was when the first Trivia Bee was held nearly a quarter-century ago, but the same spirit of community pride and love of reading remains at the heart of the Library and Literacy Foundation’s annual fundraising event. On April 24, three-member teams representing schools, businesses and other organizations will compete – in costume – and attempt to best each other’s knowledge of “The 60s,” this year’s theme.

SAVE THE DATE

24th Annual Trivia Bee “The 60s – BEE There Or BEE Square” Friday, April 24 • 5:00 – 9:00 pm Stockton Arena

The event is one of many local initiatives helping to fuel the growing momentum behind literacy in our county: Organizations, such as San Joaquin A+ and The Record newspaper, maintain their longstanding commitment to literacy and learning through programs like elementary-school tutoring and Reach Out and Read, as well as events like the Spirit of Literacy Gala and Family Day at the Park. More recent projects, including Little Free Libraries, Read to me, Stockton!, and Stockton Unified’s Classroom Libraries are helping ensure children and families have access to books. Meanwhile, University of the Pacific’s Beyond Our Gates campaign has rallied community stakeholders – from schools and libraries to churches and businesses – behind the cause of early literacy. The Library and Literacy Foundation’s annual Trivia Bee, now in its 24th year, stands alongside these efforts in helping make San Joaquin County a community of readers. As the Foundation’s primary fundraiser, the Trivia Bee plays a critical – and fun! – role in promoting the power of reading to enrich lives, with sponsorships supporting literacy programs in our community. And it’s not too late to take part–either as a Trivia Bee Team ($600) or a sponsor ($600-$5,000). You’re also welcome to come for dinner and enjoy the event as a spectator: Tickets are $25 each or $250 for a table of eight, which includes entry into the table decoration contest. Valley Garden Fair 2015 Illustration of the Children’s Home of Stockton

Organized by the Women’s Auxiliary, Valley Garden Fair raises much needed funding to support educational and social events for the children of the Children’s Home of Stockton. Each year, the Board of the Children’s Home of Stockton counts on the financial support raised by planning this special event. These funds are used to create a more home-like environment for these children. Activities such as bowling, ice skating or sledding, Sports Day -where lessons are given in baseball, soccer and volleyball, the holiday stocking, treetrimming and gingerbread house decorating party, the “Prom” dance, or the ever-meaningful graduation ceremony, take place because of fundraising events such as the Valley Garden Fair. Auxiliary members work tirelessly, along with the clinicians and teachers, to enable each child to reach their ultimate potential! Your support of this event WILL make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children. We hope you will support us in our efforts and join us for this wonderful event. Squeeze on into the newest burger joint in town!

by Payton Sprague

I Owners Brian Salemme, Travis & Vicki Hausauer, Jane & Dean Davis

f you’ve visited Lincoln Center recently, you’ve probably seen people outside waiting to get their chance to try one of our newest restaurants, Squeeze Burger! This full service restaurant has an impressive 22 beers on tap and an extensive wine list featuring many local labels, but the real star of the menu is the famous ‘Squeeze Burger.’ What makes this burger so special? It’s not just the super soft bun and high quality 1/3-pound patty that make the burger so delicious. The most unique and famous part of the burger is the skirt of cheese around the patty that no other restaurant can seem to replicate. The burger has been awarded the title of “Best Burger in Sacramento” for countless years and has also been featured on multiple television shows including Food Network’s Diners, DriveIns and Dives with Guy Fieri and the Travel Channel’s Food Paradise. Squeeze Burger not only serves their famous burger, but also a variety of healthier options like delicious salads and chicken sandwiches. When it comes to quality, everything is top-notch. For example, the milkshakes are made with premium Double Rainbow ice cream and each one takes a whole five minutes to make! Travis Hausauer opened the original Squeeze Inn 15 years ago and since then, his idea has grown into a small chain of restaurants. This newest addition in Lincoln Center, which Travis and his wife Vicki co-own with Brian Salemme and

SomethingSAVORY Dean and Jane Davis, has the same great burgers and service, just a slightly different name. The delicious burgers and other savory offerings, eight TVs and free WiFi make it the perfect place to hang out and watch the game, or just relax and enjoy a great meal. Providing a family atmosphere for customers is an easy task when the restaurant is family owned and operated. When new Squeeze Burger partner Brian Salemme had the opportunity to join the family and bring the “burger and brew” concept to Stockton, he just couldn’t pass it up. Currently, Travis runs the Sacramento and Galt Squeeze Inn locations, his daughter Morgan and her husband Matt manage Squeeze Burger here in Lincoln Center with the help of Brian and Kasi Fuller, and Matt’s parents, Dean and Jane Davis, operate the Tracy Squeeze Inn. Brian’s favorite parts about having the restaurant in Lincoln Center are the premiere location and the family atmosphere. “It’s the best and safest place to shop and dine in Stockton,” he says. Stop in and try a burger to see what all the hype is about! You’ll be glad n you did.

e are excited to announce Tony Vice of Fleet Feet Sports Stockton is the recipient of the inaugural SimsGrupe Merchant of the Year award. This brand-new annual award recognizes Lincoln Center merchants for exceptional community involvement, creative marketing, sales performance, customer experience, positive attitude and energy. Tony Vice is extremely deserving of this award for excellence in all of these categories.

Tony Vice, pictured with wife Natalie, daughter Morgan, Phil Johnson and Patrick Dobson of Sims-Grupe Management, and Janelle Meyers of Lincoln Center, receives the inaugural Sims-Grupe Merchant of the Year Award.

As the 2014 recipient, Tony was able to select a local charity to receive a $500 donation from Lincoln Center and Tony selected the Emergency Food Bank and Family Services of Stockton/ San Joaquin. He is heavily involved there and supports the Food Bank’s efforts by volunteering and holding food drives at his store. He has been on the Food Bank’s Board of Directors for six years and is an advocate for their mission. With the community’s support, the Emergency Food Bank is able to leverage its resources to provide food to families in need within our county. Each day, 250-300 individuals line up in their pantry distribution for food for themselves and their families. On average, about 6,000 people visit the Emergency Food Bank every month. Add to that the reach of their organization through the pantry partners (2,000 - 3,000 individuals) and Mobile Farmer’s Market (2,200 individuals), the Food Bank organization assists about 10,000 families and individuals throughout the county n each month.
