Our favorite part of the process of choosing the scholarship recipients was reading through the applications of many talented students. The tireless dedication, hard work, talent and willingness to give back to their communities was impressive. We are encouraged by these amazing young people — high school seniors ready to take on the world with big dreams and goals of making a difference in the lives of others. How inspiring! With over 100 applications received, the hardest part was choosing the award recipients. Three $1,000 scholarships have been selected along with three $500 scholarships. The recipients’ names can be found online at lincolncentershops.com. Mother’s Day: The older I get, the more this day means to me. While I’m not yet a mother myself, I’m starting to better understand the strong love and continuous sacrifices that come with being one. I am especially grateful for everything my mother has done for my brother and me. I value our relationship more than anything. Happy Mother’s Day and lots of love to my mom! A mother’s love truly is something to be celebrated. Show your love for the Mom in your life with a thoughtful gift this Mother’s Day (ideas on page 16). Sidewalk Sale: It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t mention one of our shoppers’ favorite events of the year. On May 3, you’ll find treasures at up to 75% off at the Semi-Annual Sidewalk Sale. Come in search of everything from home décor and linens to shoes and clothing. While you’re here, you can pick out a gift for Mom (and one for yourself!). Spring Fashion: Jeans and sweaters displays in our boutique windows have been swapped for tanks, shorts and dresses! Patterned spring scarves, brightly colored tops, flowing maxi dresses, attractive fedoras, sandals and wedges display the latest spring fashions! Come to Lincoln Center to see what’s new for spring. Shield & Honor Just in time for Memorial Day and Mother’s Day, Zuesters is now carring Shield & Honor necklaces. These special necklaces are worn in memory and honor of the legacies that have touched our lives. The story from the creators: We never knew that the end of life could be the beginning of a new one. That a full 21 Gun Salute at our grandfather’s funeral would be the catalyst and inspiration for preserving his legacy. And that an empty bullet casing could actually become so full of life. Made with real casings, these intricate hand carved pendants are as beautiful as they are unique. Each piece is designed and manufactured in California using 18k gold and sterling silver. While these were born out of remembrance of our grandfather, these beautiful symbols continue to honor those that touch all of our lives. Proceeds from each piece are donated to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund to help support veterans, war heroes and their families.

Hot New Decor at Aaron Brothers Aaron Brothers has launched their newest trend decor. Napa Home, French Manor and Pacifica arrived just in time for Mother’s Day. Why not express your love for Mom with a unique gift from one of these collections? The collections contain a rich assortment of frames, wall decor, home accents, pillows and candles that would be an exquisite compliment to any home. Aaron Brothers will also have many great offers for Memorial weekend, including 60% off and an extra 10% off all custom framing collections. Make Aaron Brothers your destination in May!

FeaturedMERC HANT same financial services that banks do. When George started his State Farm office in 1983 they offered 20 products. Now over 30 years later it has grown to about 100. What’s unique to this particular business is its strong families ties. George Azevedo, Sr. had a state farm office in Manteca from 1959 to 1995. In 1983, George Azevedo, Jr. opened his office and keeps the family business going. George’s wife Janet is the office manager and their daughter Lisa handles all the marketing. On any given day you are guaranteed to see at least one of George and Janet’s four grandchildren in the office. They even have a crib set up in the back room for Lisa’s youngest Tristan, (7 months)! Their oldest grandchild Jade, (age 14,) helps in the office whenever she gets a chance. George and his grandsons Geo (George Azevedo VI, age 6) and Brendan (age 4) enjoy almost daily walks in Lincoln Center to the “jelly bean store” (Yogurt My Way) on their way to the bank. The Azevedo’s business has been in Lincoln Center for 20 years. “We love all the Center has to offer,” says Janet. George and Janet often take advantage of Papapavlo’s Monday night wine tasting events and look forward to every LIVE! At Lincoln Center event. Being fans of collector cars, it’s no surprise their favorite LIVE! is the August Car Show. The Azevedos graciously donate hours upon hours of their time handling registration for the Car Show, which raises over $4,000 for student scholarships. n

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE

The KitchenSide A

couple of weeks ago my daughter Holland came home for spring break and brought two of her friends from college with her. I say “home” like they were here much. Home was the stopping off point and midway base between Santa Cruz and San Francisco for laundry and home cooked meals. Both my specialty in my children’s eyes!

Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

When Holland left for college she was truly the healthy eater in the family but that didn’t stop her from having a bite or two of the cheese, butter and milk laden dishes that I was famous for. I could mix any of those ingredients with potato, pasta or even a veggie and plop that spoonful of heaven right next to flank steak or chicken and I was golden! Even better if there was a loaf of butter dripping hot French bread with it. So the minute I heard they were coming I started planning... all of Holland’s favorites were sure to be a hit with her friends, right? Well... here comes the bombshell! A two-word way of life with a dash in it! “GLUTEN-FREE”! What?! And hold your breath... “DAIRY INTOLERANT” and... are you ready? VEGETARIAN! These words... I’ve heard them before... but what do I do with them?! Three breakfasts, three lunches and three dinners! OMG! Thankfully, just over a month ago, I started carrying a local product, “At the table together” created by Claudia Pruett and Rima Barkett. They started out with packaged Focaccia mix that requires a bottle of bubbly water, olive oil, a bowl to mix it in and a pan (USA PANS makes the perfect 1/4 sheet size). I sat there panicked about what in the world I was going to serve these three besides fruit salad. I remembered the label of one of the packages had THOSE words with the DASH between them on it. Yes! GLUTEN-FREE Focaccia mix! And GLUTEN-FREE Pancake mix! Breakfast, lunch and dinner all in two small bags right in my very own store! My menu you ask...Pancakes with sliced strawberries, pancakes with a fried egg on top, pancakes and sausage (they make vegetarian!). They LOVED the pancakes! “Better than the regular ones,” they said. For

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE one of our lunches I made the Focaccia and served it right out the oven...golden brown and crisp on the edges, sparkling in olive oil. I put it on the table with fresh sliced tomatoes and fresh basil from my ever-present Trader Joe’s basil plant. I happened to have a bottle of the LUCERO garlic flavored olive oil that we also sell for a little added flavor. It was simple and fresh and crazy good. Dinner?....Oh boy! Salmon, McHugh Yukon gold roasted potatoes, artichokes (fun to see a newbie eat one!), spinach salad with strawberries and GLUTEN-FREE Focaccia topped with fresh rosemary. Then... baked Cod with white wine and green onions, baked potato, and fresh Stockton Asparagus. I did it! They didn’t starve! I overheard one of the girls on the phone telling her mom how wonderful the meals were, and that she’d tried things she’d never had. When those three girls left, they were well stocked! I get pictures via text of the things they have created out of simple bags of GLUTEN-FREE mixes. Thank you Claudia for the special delivery of pancake mix! Your product saved me! Come check out all the wonderful mixes... Gluten-free was just a bonus. There are many to choose from and the perfect pans to bake them in! Treat your Moms for Mother’s Day! Treat your family everyday! They’re that good! n

Listen Up: M

May is Better Hearing Month

ay is Better Hearing Month and brings warm weather with plenty of swimming! If you are prone to ear infections or fungus, such as swimmer’s ear, I advise you to wear a pair of custom ear plugs designed to keep your ears dry during swimming. Children are exceptionally prone to infection and should wear ear plugs while in the water. See your doctor immediately if you suspect an ear infection!

Debbie Bond American Hearing Aids

Cotton swabs were not made to dry ears! They were developed for parents to clean the outer folds of a child’s ear. When using a swab in the ear canal, the essential wax and oils are removed. These are needed to lubricate the sensitive skin in the ear canal and keep small irritants from getting too close to the eardrum. Over use of cotton swabs can lead to abrasions and very itchy ears. If you suspect your ears are wet inside, simply wrap a tissue or towel around your finger and hold it at the entrance to the canal. This will act as a wick and absorb most of the moisture without damage. There are many natural oil products available to treat the ear canal, if you experience dry, itchy ears. Miracell is an all-natural product that is available at American Hearing Aids.

American Hearing Aids 880 W Benjamin Holt Dr. (209) 227-6386 www.americanhearingaids.biz

What do you use to remove wax from your ears? A key? A paper clip? A cotton swab? I’m hoping you didn’t answer yes to any of these choices! Occasionally, ear wax can build up and cause an impaction. This can cause pain, temporary hearing loss, dizziness and harbor infections. Your doctor is the best person to remove this impaction. If you suspect excess wax, call us at American Hearing Aids and we’ll use an otoscope to look deep into the ear canal to see if wax removal is necessary. Don’t guess! The ear is easily damaged and should be treated with care. n
