LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE 374 Lincoln Center Stockton, CA 95207

lthough I touched on the Scholarship Program briefly in the last issue of the Chronicle, it’s worth mentioning again. Just a few days ago the rest of the scholarship committee and I were able to meet the seven recipients of the 201415 Lincoln Center scholarships. Wow, are they inspiring! We were impressed by their smart, thoughtful applications. In person, we saw they truly are shining stars.

One student got in to NYU. Another raises pigs. One plans on a career in international business that will take him all over the world. Two plan to be engineers. One’s going to UCLA and another to USC. One of the recipients spends her free time digging wells in Africa. More than half of them want to come back after college and invest in our community. I could go on and on. Just listening to them talk about their goals was inspiring. (More info. about the Scholarship Program is on page 23.)

Getting through four years of high school volunteering, participating in sports and student government, Future Farmers of America and Science Olympiad, Speech and Debate, etc. (all while maintaining a 3.0 – 4.6 GPA) takes not only endless dedication and hard work, but also support from family and mentors. With Mother’s and Father’s Day both approaching, it causes me to reflect on the unconditional love and constant support I’ve received not only as a child but also into adulthood. (Thank you Mom and Dad!) To celebrate Mother’s Day, there are some gift ideas on page 16. The June issue will feature gift ideas for Dad. With spring also comes some fun events at Lincoln Center! The Sidewalk Sale, a customer favorite, takes place Saturday, May 2. Come out to find deals at more than 20 participating shops. The Lincoln Center LIVE! events are just around the corner. Mark June 12, July 17 and August 21 in your calendar. Wine tasting, live music, family fun, classic cars. Could summer get any better!?

lthough Jackie Kromm has only owned Theadora since August 2014, she has already made the women’s clothing boutique a must-visit shop in Stockton. Jackie had a bra and lingerie shop for seven years in British Columbia, and when she and her family arrived in Stockton nearly two years ago, she brought her expertise to Theadora. “It’s so important for a woman to feel comfortable from the inside out,” she said, noting that you must start with the right undergarments. Theadora specializes in bra fittings and carries bra sizes that aren’t often found in department stores, with band sizing ranging from 28 to 44, and cup sizes A to H. In the very near future they will be expanding the types of bras they carry to include sports, nursing and mastectomy bras. Whether you’re looking for something casual or special, Theadora carries just about anything a woman could need for her wardrobe. Basics like pants, blouses, dresses, and sleepwear, along with accessories like jewelry, scarves, and belts, Jackie Kromm, owner of Theadora

FeaturedMERC HANT – continued from page 5 have made this a one-stop shop. Brands like Sanctuary, Level 99, Scrapbook, Lucky Brand, and Brighton jewelry offer trendy and stylish options, as well as classics that are great for every season. “We carry clothes and accessories for the everyday woman,” said Jackie. One-on-one attention is an important part of the shopping experience at Theadora. Jackie says she’s been blown away by the loyalty of the customers who support local businesses, particularly the ones who returned to Theadora under her ownership. She credits their loyalty to the customer service her staff provides. Private consultations are just one example of the fantastic customer service, and these can be made by appointment. And within the store, the knowledgeable staff is eager to help every woman look the best she can be.

“What’s more empowering than clothing and intimates you love living life in? At Theadora that is our main goal.” With a hockey coach for a husband, and four athletic children, Jackie, a native New Yorker, spends quite a bit of time watching sports. She particularly enjoys attending her youngest daughter’s soccer games. Jackie’s other interests include writing and learning something new every day. She also loves getting to know a customer’s “story”. “I have met so many interesting and dynamic people since purchasing the boutique. Every day brings with it a different and meaningful experience,” Jackie shared. It’s clear that Jackie has a passion for helping women express themselves through their fashion. “Clothing helps to define and embody what a woman wants to reveal about who she is,” she said. And with a staff that cares so much about helping empower the women that shop there, Theadora is n more than just a shop- it’s an experience.

“All women have a sense of style at every age,” said Jackie. “A lot of women know what they want, but sometimes the challenge is how to put it together.” And that’s where Jackie and her staff come in. Sometimes, all it takes are a few new items to be incorporated into an existing wardrobe to shake things up a bit. Jackie urges women not to feel boxed in by the idea that they’re too old for certain trends.

FeaturedMERC HANT Jackie’s Top 5 Spring/Summer Trends

1

First and foremost, Jackie says dressing to your strengths never goes out of style! Wear clothes you feel comfortable and confident in.

Summer bra options

With backless, strapless and off-theshoulder looks popular this spring, many of us are in need of good bra solutions for these looks.

2

-The Nu Bra “stickie cups” are great for backless dresses and tops, and will actually stay in place all day and night long.

Bohemian-style

-Coobies, available in an array of colors, are easy and fun to wear under tanks, t-shirts and dresses.

The “Boho” style is big right now, and a great relaxed look for spring and summer. Try something flowy and off the shoulder.

4

Rompers

One-piece ensembles that are cute and comfortable for day and nighttime.

3

-The Marlies Dekker strappy bra is equally sexy and practical! Wear it under a t-shirt or anything high-neck and you can’t see the straps. Throw on something different for the evening and allow the straps to peek out. You won’t believe how comfortable it is until you try it on.

5

Layering jewelry

Try wearing two or three necklaces at different lengths.

MAY IS BETTER HEARING MONTH

WE'RE HERE TO HELP. Byron Meth and Ben Mackie, owner of Ben Mackie Fitness

A Golf Dream Come True Ben Mackie has loved golf since he can remember. As a young boy he looked forward to watching the Masters Golf Tournament on television every year. “My mom and I would move around the antennas on our small black and white TV, repositioning them until the picture came in clearly,” said Ben. Born and raised in England, watching the Masters with a nine-hour time change wasn’t the easiest. “When I was little, I remember thinking how badly I wanted to come to America one day and watch it in real time,” said Ben. Well he’s been watching the tournament in America for 10 years now, and this year he was able to experience it in person. Ben not only attended, but caddied the Par 3 Contest for University of the Pacific’s Byron Meth, who played in the Masters for the first time. The Par 3 Contest dates back more than half a century. It is held on Wednesday of tournament week each year and televised around the world. It is, above all, a family affair and meant to relieve stress for the players. Although there is a Par 3 Contest winner, many players don’t even post a score. They prefer to leisurely stroll the nine holes, occasionally having their caddies or wives attempt a chip or pitch or tap in a putt. “When Byron asked me to finish the ninth hole, I was excited. But when he purposely left me with a 30-foot right to left downhill putt, I was extremely nervous! I told him I wouldn’t do it, but he handed me the putter anyways. I ended leaving it two feet past the hole, then tapped it in for a par,” said Ben, relieved.

Byron led the amateurs but did not make the cut for the weekend. As he stated in his GolfWeek blog, “There’s no award for low amateur after the first round of the Masters, but if there was I would own it. If you told me I’d shoot 74 in my first competitive round at the Masters, I’d take it.” Sounds like a golf dream come true. Congratulations to Byron Meth and here’s to many more years at the Masters.

2014

Ben has caddied for Byron at multiple tournaments over the years. The two met when Ben was an assistant golf coach at Pacific and worked with the team at his personal training studio, Ben Mackie Fitness. “This was really a dream come true,” shared Ben. “Walking that course for five days, watching history in the making and thinking about all those who have played here before, was an indescribable experience.” Ben enjoyed the tournament with the company of his mom who traveled all the way from Ireland, his sister and brother-in-law from England, and friends all the way from Dubai to here in Stockton.

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE

The KitchenSide A

s I “waffle” back and forth as what to write about this month....I’ll begin by wishing all the mothers out there a wonderful Mother’s Day and a great big huge CONGRATULATIONS to all those graduates that have worked so hard to earn their diplomas and degrees! Many Mays ago, a very good friend of ours invited a group of us over for brunch. It was a beautiful day and she had set up a waffle bar outside. It was a great idea and one I wanted to share. This idea would be perfect for a Mother’s Day or graduation brunch! Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

The waffle bar was set up so that the waffle iron could be used outside. The waffles then were readily made and piping hot. There was an array of fruits and syrups to top our waffles with...bacon and sausages were along for the ride! It was the perfect setting for a wonderful meal. I guess the choice remains... regular waffles or Belgian? Stuffed with bacon (my husband’s favorite) or plain? The KitchenSide at Best Wishes has both waffle makers to choose from. Cuisinart has a non-stick, fivesetting browning control classic waffle maker while Waring offers an extra-deep restaurant style Belgian waffle maker that rotates for even browning. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to become a favorite! On a side note... have you tried cooking your bacon in the oven yet? So much cleaner! So much better! Line a cookie sheet with foil, lay out your bacon, cook at 350 for 20-30 minutes depending on the thickness and how “done” you like your bacon. Remove and pat with paper towels to absorb the grease. Pull edges of your foil up to make a boat for the grease for easy clean up. For those of you that remember 21 years ago Best Wishes windows were filled with signs and pink balloons to announce the arrival of our little pink bundle... that little girl will be graduating from Boise State University this May. Congratulations Holland! Quite the Mother’s Day Gift!

ersonal trainer Teresa Page may be brand new to Ben Mackie Fitness, but not to the world of personal training. Teresa is an AFAA certified personal trainer, specializing in Pilates and active aging fitness, and holds a Masters Degree in Education from UC Davis. She began teaching fitness classes in 2011 and brings the high energy of a group fitness class into her personal training sessions. Teresa’s passion for fitness started when she began distance running in 2004. After completing numerous races, she realized how much she enjoyed working out with other people rather than alone. “There is such a great dynamic and so much energy when people encourage each other,” said Teresa. Her passion developed further when she became certified as a group fitness instructor specializing in mat Pilates. Teresa has experience and knowledge working with diverse populations, such as active agers. She truly understands their unique needs. “I love motivating people, and I’m keen on perfecting form and alignment for safety and effectiveness,” Teresa shared.

s we age, the effects of sunlight, smoking, drinking, illness, stress, and other factors take a toll on our faces. Nothing takes the place of an effective daily skin care regimen to combat the signs of aging. But sometimes we also need to do a little facial “photoshopping” to give our faces some renewed luster. Fortunately, today we have quite a few weapons in our arsenal of anti-aging products that can soften some of the ravages of time without giving us a plastic look. Juvederm, an injectable of primarily hyaluronic acid (which is found naturally in our bodies) is the perfect filler to minimize the laugh lines around the mouth, minimize the vertical lines above our lips as well as plump up those disappearing lips. It is also the perfect weapon to erase the marionette lines marching down the corners of the mouth to the chin area. To return those former or “never had” high cheekbones, Voluma, a relatively new filler (again composed primarily of hyaluronic acid) is injected into the cheek area. Voluma adds volume lost to aging, creates contour and gives a subtle lift instantly. Its effects last up to two years. For more information on these products, visit cvderm.com or find us on Facebook. You are also welcome to come by our location in n Lincoln Center or give us a call at (209) 477-SKIN.
