Your Lincoln Center merchant’s understand the importance of creating opportunity and being entrepreneurial. Sometimes that opportunity starts with a new idea, a small break and a little financial backing. We are honored to support the future leaders of our community by providing scholarship funds for some of our local high school seniors. The Lincoln Center Scholarship winners are announced on page 24. Lincoln Center is bringing out its spring baseball hats on May 6 to University of the Pacific’s Klein Field as we support the bats of our Tigers. Our merchants will be in the stadium with displays and plenty of giveaways every inning as they take on Kyle Cortopassi (St. Mary’s High 2012) and the Santa Clara Broncos. Welcome home and good luck Kyle in your last home stand against the Tigers. Thank you to my Goddaughter, Leila Rishwain and my son, Charlie — our cover models this month — for re-enacting their February 2005 Lincoln Center Chronicle cover. Where did 11 years go!? Take a look on page 14! Enjoy our beautiful San Joaquin Valley spring weather. It’s time to get outdoors. The smell of fresh cut grass, the crack of the bat and fresh fruits are a plenty. Stop by Podesto’s Market to pick up the first delivery of local sweet cherries. Let’s cherish and be proud of where we live and all that is offered by the people of San Joaquin County. Much of what they serve is made from scratch, such as their famous clam chowder, and the hollandaise sauce that they serve with their Eggs Benedict dishes during brunch. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year at Bud’s, where they open the doors for brunch an hour earlier, at 9:00 am, to accommodate as many guests as possible. Mother’s Day dinner at Bud’s is just as popular, and starts at 3:00 pm. But — Mother’s Day isn’t the only day of the year they serve brunch. Bud says, “We’ve been offering Sunday brunch since the first week we opened!” The brunch menu includes, but is not limited to, coffee, champagne, a choice of freshly baked blueberry muffins or coffee cake and classic dishes such as french toast, omelettes and scrambles. You can of course order up traditional sandwiches and salads along with the daily specials and children’s portions.
Bud, whose experience in the food industry long outdates the restaurant, prides himself on carrying only the highest quality ingredients and seafood. If they can use local produce, they do. The restaurant’s popular BLTs, for example, are only served in the

A MOMENT OF PAUSE... by Andi Schloss
W
e’ve seen the viral videos that keep us glued to our smart phones and tablets for hours: soldiers surprising loved ones with an early trip back from deployment, dads meeting their babies for the first time and tear-jerking reunions of dogs and their owners. But as we celebrate the joyous moments of these families, we also honor and give thanks to soldiers who don’t come home. Memorial Day is a moment to pause, reflect and pay tribute to the thousands of men and women who have not only served our country to establish and protect our freedoms but who have sacrificed their lives for our own. Born from the Civil War as a way to honor our fallen, Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. At the time, it was referred to as “Decoration Day” and celebrated by the decoration of tens of thousands of graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. At its inception, only soldiers who were killed during the Civil War were honored. Nearly 5,000 participants paid respects and reflected on the sacrifice of the soldiers, and by 1890, all northern states recognized the day as an official holiday. Southern states did not partake until after World War I, when it was announced that soldiers from all wars (not only Civil War) would be honored on that day.

SpecialFEATURE Since it’s origination, Memorial Day is celebrated nationally in several ways. Schools fly the flag half-mast, soldiers proudly parade in small towns throughout the country, families display flags outside of their homes and the President delivers a speech at Arlington National Cemetery. Last year, while overlooking the cemetery, President Obama shared, “…hallowed ground is more than the final resting place of heroes; it is a reflection of America itself.” And in Washington D.C., the Unknown Soldier is decorated more extravagantly than the graves of soldiers in the 1860’s, but with the same honor. The Unknown Soldier rests within a white marble tomb on the east hill of the cemetery, overlooking our nation’s capitol. On Memorial Day in 1921, four unknown soldiers were exhumed from four U.S. cemeteries in France. Decorated Sergeant Edward F. Younger, randomly selected one soldier to serve as a symbol of those who have died unidentified in war. This tomb showcases the sacrifice of thousands and our nation goes to great lengths to protect its significance. 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, the Unknown Soldier’s tomb is guarded by an elite squad. Even through severe weather warnings and government closures, this honor guard does not leave post. Heroic stories have surfaced over the years from frontiersman Davy Crockett, who died in the War of 1812, to American football player Pat Tillman, who left his professional football career to defend his country in Afghanistan. Marine Captain Jennifer Harris, 28, died when her helicopter crashed on her third deployment. She was scheduled to go home the following week. On a local level, 2003 Stagg graduate and avid guitarist Robbie Mariano enlisted in the war post 9/11. According to younger brother, Bobbie, Mariano felt that it was a “good time” to join the Army and volunteered for our country at only 21 years old. He enlisted during a time of war, and had the support of his military-minded family (Mariano’s father was a Stockton policeman; grandfathers were in the Navy and Army). Mariano was killed in Iraq only 2 months after deployment when a bomb detonated near his convoy — a mission for which he volunteered. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Mariano’s death and we remember him for his courage and dedication to our country. Pfc. Mariano knew the dangers, met them with unwavering bravery and gave the ultimate sacrifice.
President Ronald Regan spoke of our nation’s responsibility to soldiers in 1986, directing his sentiments directly to the men who served in Vietnam. “We owe them something, those boys,” said Regan. “We owe them first a promise: That just as they did not forget their missing comrades, neither, ever, will we.” To some, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, an excuse to host a backyard barbeque and splash in the swimming pool. But for countless families of fallen war heroes, it is perhaps the most meaningful day of the year. Memorial Day is the time to remember a soldier’s sacrifice and loyalty to our nation, and is a testimony to those who have given all to protect America’s people. Let us show honor to veterans and respect the freedoms they fought, to their death, to protect. President Regan closed his 1986 speech with a phrase that we are fortunate enough to live out this Memorial Day: “God bless you, and have a day full of memories.” n

A Moment In Time... T
he cover of this Chronicle is a special one for many reasons. Not only have Charlie Johnson and Leila Rishwain been friends their entire lives but both are nearing the end of their high school careers at St. Mary’s High School and getting ready to take their next steps. The two were both featured on the cover of the February Lincoln Center Chronicle in 2005 when Leila was 7 and Charlie was 6. We had a great time recreating that cover seen below. Charlie Johnson, 17, is currently a Junior at St. Mary’s High School and plays on the Varsity baseball team. He is a member of the International Outreach Club and the Athletic Leadership Club. After high school, Charlie hopes to play baseball in college and plans to study Business Finance. Charlie is the youngest child of Sims Grupe Management President, Phil Johnson and his wife Wendy. He has three older siblings, Melissa, Katlyn and Zach, all of which have been familiar faces around the Center their entire lives.
Leila Rishwain, 18, is currently a Senior at St. Mary’s High School. Next year Leila will be attending University of California, Los Angeles where she will be majoring in Neuroscience. Leila has a strong passion for dance which she has done since she was 2 years old. At St. Mary’s Leila is involved in many wonderful groups and organizations such as, Empowering Young Women of which she is the Vice President, Think Pink of which she is the President and the International Outreach Club. Leila is the youngest child of Mark and Michelle Rishwain and she has three older siblings Jessica, David and Bobby. Charlie’s clothes are from Zuesters and Leila’s dress and jewelry can be found at FINA. Both Charlie and Leila are wearing shoes from Dennis Shea Shoes. Before our photo shoot Leila got the glam treatment with a makeover from Merle Norman Cosmetics. n

Lincoln Center is sad to announce the passing of Lincoln Center family member, Scott Waters. Many will remember Scott as a hard working team member of our Maintenance crew. For 19 years, Scott helped keep the Center beautiful, knew the ins and outs of absolutely everything here in Lincoln Center and played an important part in many of our events. Before coming to work for Lincoln Center, Scott was a familiar face around the Center working for years at Bill Parks and before that he worked seasonally at Wayne Segale’s Christmas Tree Lot.
Scott Waters
Scott attended high school at St. Mary’s where he played football and went on to college at Sacramento State. Scott is survived by his mother Janine, father Ken and his sister Lynn who resides in Ventura, CA. In his spare time Scott enjoyed working on cars and watching soccer. His favorite football team was the Oakland Raiders.

rom mascara, to false eyelashes, there’s no doubt that you have a ton of options when it comes to primping your lashes. What you might not know is that POMP Salon has been serving up eyelash extensions since they opened in July 2014. From strips to the recommended individuals, the benefits of eyelash extensions are tenfold. Imagine — no mascara needed, waterproof for summer, which means no smearing or running in the coming hot months, and to boot, you’ll naturally accentuate your already fabulous lashes by making them longer and thicker. Olivia DeVore, from POMP Salon, says they take up to 2 hours to apply and do not cause any damage to your natural lashes. Each lash extension is designed to adhere to your individual lashes and grow with the natural growth pattern. They can last up to 6 weeks, however, DeVore also recommends coming back every 3-4 weeks for a fill, stating she has clients who’ve “had them for years.” For more info, call POMP n Salon at (209) 954-9255.
