t’s one of our favorite times of the year at Lincoln Center! As lights are strung and windows are decorated, valley residents and guests flock to the Center for fall flavors and winter arrivals. We’d hate to disappoint during what is sure to be a bright and magical season, so we guarantee new surprises in store as we approach our 65th Holiday Open House on November 13. Among our most anticipated events is the popular Snow Village located between Theadora and Carats. Also, look a little deeper in the space and you may see Santa prepping for his big day (yes, we have moved our Santa House indoors this year!

Lincoln Center would like to welcome back to the Village Tammy Kelley as she opens C.R. Porter this month next door to Central Valley Dermatology. Tammy is excited to re-open on the corner with a 3,000 square foot furniture and gift store. Head two doors down for a renovated dining experience at Sho Mi, who has been serving customers for over 20 years. Also, boasting a major expansion is DeVons Jewelers, whose store now offers the prestigious Rolex Boutique. Lastly, we are excited to announce (as our mouths begin to water) Phil Wong and Nick DiArenzo’s opening of Prime Table, a traditional steakhouse in the former Lincoln Cellar space. There’s “Something in the Air” at Lincoln Center and we want you to come out and make us “Your Home for the Holidays.” Stay tuned and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, and visit LincolnCenterShops.com for updates on all holiday happenings. Happy Holidays!

ith the upcoming holiday season, there is no doubt that many of us will find ourselves running to and from the post office to send off presents to loved ones near and far. The task itself can be rather stressful, but you can be sure to leave your worries behind by going to The UPS Store’s Lincoln Center location. Owner Jason Legaspi prides himself and his stellar staff for their top-notch customer service, which has kept them as a mainstay in the community for the past 25 years, having just celebrated their anniversary this past October! “The most important thing is for [my customers] to be satisfied, that’s my passion,” Jason said. “I always want to make them happy and make sure they have a great experience by making them comfortable, and making sure they understand what we have to offer.” Other than mailing services, The UPS Store provides a myriad of other services such as packaging, notary, copying, printing, mailbox rentals and computer rental stations. Over the past 25 years Jason has noticed the many needs in services change, which has allowed the extension of his business to keep growing. Jason Legaspi, owner of The UPS Store

FeaturedMERC HANT Formerly a pre-med major at CSU Hayward, Jason switched to studying business management after falling in love with retail when he helped his parents run their vineyard in Lodi. He realized what he was passionate about — helping others — and that could be done through retail just as it could by becoming a doctor. So retail it was, and here he is today, still fulfilling that need of wanting to help others. Taking the knowledge he gained from his studies, he successfully opened The UPS Store, formerly known as Mail Boxes Etc, with the help of his parents. The concept of the store enticed him as it was something completely different from other businesses around. When deciding on a location, Jason thought Lincoln Center was the perfect fit because it has such a great atmosphere. The unfortunate passing of his father earlier this year hit Jason really hard as he played an integral role in helping The UPS Store become what it is today. When he isn’t busy working at the store, Jason enjoys destressing by working out, hanging out with his dogs Misty and Shorty and giving back to the community by offering his services to senior citizens. “I have a lot of close connections to my clients, and what I like to give back to the community is being a friend,” he said. You can find him visiting senior

citizen centers where he notarizes documents and picks up packages free of charge for the residents there. Jason is also very passionate about the arts, and children’s education, so this holiday season The UPS Store is asking its customers once again to donate a dollar to Toys For Tots’ literacy program instead of purchasing a toy. With the way he treats his customers, it’s no surprise that The UPS Store has maintained its rightful place in Lincoln Center for so long. “I’d just like to thank my staff, past and present, Stockton, the local community, and Lincoln Center for patronizing us, and welcoming us. I still can’t believe it’s been 25 years.” And being apart of the UPS family, Jason is very excited to announce that UPS will have a float in the Rose Bowl Parade this coming January, so be sure to look out for it! n

hroughout the recent years, we’ve been encouraged to step outside our “Big Box” shopping and dining ways to opt to support small businesses. While many of us follow this sentiment to watch the success of our beloved business owners, shopping local has additional benefits for our thriving Stockton community. According to USA Today, shopping local is advantageous for our business owning friends and our own pocketbooks. Consider spending $100 at one of our many small businesses in Lincoln Center: $68 of that will stay in our local community, financially aiding schools, street repair, safety precautions and more. Spending the same amount at a local branch of a chain store will pile $43 into the community, while online shopping adds virtually nothing to community efforts.
neighborhoods gather to support one another, that is appealing in the market. Shopping local also creates jobs. Good jobs. Meaningful jobs. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, “The younger companies are, the more jobs they create.” These jobs typically pay better, too, so in supporting small businesses, we are aiding in the resume development and financial stability of small business employees. We have great pride in our non-profit partnerships in the Valley, and our local businesses go above and beyond to support their efforts. According to the American Independent Business Alliance, “Small businesses donate more than twice as much per sales dollar to local non-profits, events, and teams compared to big businesses.” So in shopping and dining local, we are essentially giving to the charities our entrepreneurial friends choose to support. That’s a win-win!
In addition, shopping and dining local has been shown to increase property values in our Stockton neighborhoods. Buyers look for a vibrant downtown “feel” with strolling citizens and gathering crowds. They want to see a community’s personality, and when our

SpecialFEATURE If the financial benefits aren’t enough to sway you, ponder the importance of the emotional connections formed during small business relationships. Speak to Chef Michael Midgley at Midgley’s Public House about his many “wins” at cooking competitions. Or, walk into Payters and give your sandwich order to one of the many students while they tell you about their school’s baseball record. Along with this emotional connection comes a different shopping experience that you won’t find at “Big Box” stores. Many local retail shops will gift wrap at no additional charge, and walk around the counter to personally hand you the merchandise. Angela Karp, owner at Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique, appreciates the personalized attention she’s able to give each customer as they’re able to feel the quality of clothing (something you’re unable to do online, of course), and enjoys seeing children “grow in and out” of the store.
She believes that shopping local is “all about the community – it’s all about the people.” At Lincoln Center, we’re giddy about our relationships with our merchants, and appreciate the connections formed within our retail and dining community. We encourage you to shop and dine local on November 26, as we celebrate Small Business Saturday, a National campaign created by American Express to recruit the masses to flood local business establishments. Whether you sip on martinis at Market Tavern, grab new coconut oil at Artesian Natural Foods, or get fitted for a new pair of running shoes at Fleet Feet, make sure to hashtag your photos with #ShopSmall and tag us on Facebook and Instagram. We can’t wait to see the delicious eats you devour and unique trinkets you’ll score! For more information on Small Business Saturday, visit LincolnCenterShops.com. n

4 WAYS to Spruce Up
Your Holidays
Add a Unique Dish to Accompany Old Favorites What better way to keep your Thanksgiving guests on their toes than to throw in a fun, non-traditional dish to your Thanksgiving spread. Why not offer authentic tamales (our favorite are from the Flores’ at Tio Pepe’s) as a fun side or add in spring rolls, pot stickers or dumplings for an Asian twist. Our restaurants, DOMO, Dynasty Seafood, New Yen Ching and Sho Mi, can help you add these authentic touches to your meal. This is a fun way to add a little culture to your Thanksgiving traditions.

MONDAY - SATURDAY 10AM-6PM SUNDAY 12-5PM (209) 474-7407
The Pijl family is a Lincoln Center staple. Dad, Peter Pijl owns Payters Grill, son Adam owns David’s Pizza in Lincoln Center and daughters, Shaina and Kindra own Zuesters. With three businesses and a ton of family between them, it’s hard to peel them away from work and other obligations, so this family celebrates Thanksgiving a little differently – at breakfast! Thanksgiving is one of only two times a year that patriarch, Peter, cooks a full Payters style breakfast for his entire family and they enjoy it all together in their pajamas.

Don’t forget, smell is everything! Get your guests in the holiday mood by adding a comforting fall scent to your home. My favorites this year are Red Currant from Votivo and Pumpkin Chai from Nest, both available here at C.R. Porter.

Less Hassle, Less Mess
On the cover of this issue are some of the wonderful holiday offerings found right here in the Center.
Let’s face it, Thanksgiving can be one of the most stressful days of the year — especially if you are in charge of hosting your group! Make things a little easier on you and don’t try and do it all this year by picking up sides dishes for your holiday meal from either Market Tavern or Papapavlo’s. Both of which are offering traditional fixings to go! They will even cook your turkey, hot and ready for pickup. Don’t forget to call and place your order ahead of time! Market Tavern: (209) 932-8001 Papapavlo’s: (209) 477-6133
Want to avoid all the mess and stress of hosting this Thanksgiving? Consider making a reservation to eat out at the following Lincoln Center restaurants that are open on Thanksgiving. Dynasty Seafood
Midgley’s Public House
Market Tavern
Papapavlo’s
Chef Michael Midgley of Midgley’s Public House barrel smoked a Diestel turkey from Podesto’s Market. Diestel Turkeys are favorite at Podesto’s. These turkeys will impress your guests with their premium quality and taste. If you are eating dinner at Papapavlo’s for Thanksgiving be sure to give their vegetable medley, pictured on the cover, a try. With a mix of fresh carrots, green beans and red bell peppers roasted and seasoned to perfection — what’s not to love! The award winning bakery at Podesto’s Market is sure to make your Thanksgiving desserts a no brainer. Try their famous homemade pumpkin pies. Many of our restaurants throughout the Center are in the process of creating the best holiday cocktails to make your season bright – including the one pictured on the cover of this issue from Papapavlo’s.

Carve your Turkey in 4 Easy Steps Chef Michael Midgley of Midgley’s Public House teaches you the best way to carve your Thanksgiving turkey. Place the bird breast-side up with the legs facing away from you. Slice the skin between the legs and body. Then use a fork to pull the legs away from the body until the joints pop. Cut the joints to remove each leg.
# #
Separate the drumsticks from the thighs by locating the joint in the middle of each leg and cutting through it.
#
Pull the wings away from the body and cut through the joint to remove the wings. Remove each side of breast meat by slicing downward along the top breastbone (keeping the blade close to the rib cage), following the curve of the body. Place each breast on a cutting board, skin side up, and slice against the grain. n

Picking the
Perfect Outfit for your
Holiday Photos
T
The holidays are officially upon us! That means it’s time to start thinking about your Christmas card photo. Picking outfits for a photo shoot can be a little bit overwhelming sometimes but seasoned photographer, Christyn Giannini of Free Byrd Studios has a few tips and tricks to make this year’s family photo stress-free.
LET’S START WITH COLOR. Start with a couple neutral colors (think: brown, cream, white, gray, black) and add a few spice colors for vibrancy! Here are a few color suggestions by season: FALL: burnt orange, rusty red, mustard yellow, navy, olive green, gold WINTER: red, any shade of green, navy, silver SPRING/SUMMER: coral, aqua, pale yellow, lime green, sky blue
THINK TEXTURE. Texture in your outfit choices is an easy way to add depth and interest to your photos. Try using fur, leather, crochet, wool, chiffon, silk, denim, tulle, suede, etc.
NOW, LAYER! Layer these textures on top of each other, but make it flattering! Christyn calls this “streamlined layering”! Try pairing skinny jeans with a tall riding boot or a fitted sweater with a fun blazer, scarf or even a chunky colorful necklace. For the guys, a colored shirt can be worn under a sweater or tailored jacket. Layering can be done in every season.
DON’T BE AFRAID. Don’t be afraid of patterns. Throw a few different patterns on a couple family members. Plaid is in, stripes, polka dots, leopard print all in small doses make great statements! For little girls, try fun patterned tights under a skirt!
BE YOU. HAVE FUN. Whatever you choose, make sure you look like you! Be true to your own personal style. Still overwhelmed? We get it and so do our merchants. Bring these tips in to any of our wonderful boutiques and get the personal, one-on-one help they offer. With their expertise, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect outfits all in one stop! n

Germs: Breaking the Cycle of Sickness By: Ahmid Dredar, MD
Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at
This is the time of year where germs make their grand appearance, disrupting our routines and quite literally making us sick. To help break the cycle of sickness in your home, your workplace and our community, it is important to practice proper cold and flu season etiquette. 1. Wash your hands more often than you think you need to and try to keep them out of your eyes, nose, and mouth. 2. Give your immune system a boost by eating right, getting plenty of sleep, and exercising regularly. Get your yearly flu shot to help guard yourself from the flu. 3. Be on your guard in cozy spaces. Although many people can be contagious before they realize that they have a cold, it’s best to steer clear of those showing signs of sickness. 4. If you have a fever, stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever has passed. Getting sick is never on anyone’s agenda. If you do get sick, be sure to talk to your doctor if you have questions and to try your best to protect others.
