trength. Determination. Courage. Power. Beauty.

That is what I felt when I met these remarkable women we have featured on the October cover.

Observing these ladies in pink, joining together at one time, in one place. It was powerful.

This is how it all came about: Several weeks ago we called out to breast cancer survivors, as well as anyone currently battling the disease. We asked them to put on their pink and come to Lincoln Center for a group photo. The women on the cover, standing proudly with their beautiful smiles, answered our call.

While I can’t begin to imagine what they’ve gone through, their love and strength was so evident at the photo shoot. As I met each one, I listened to their stories, saw the tears that were shed, heard their echoed laughter, and observed exchanged hugs. It was then that I started to understand how powerful this experience would be. Though the cover photo reminds us of this continued battle for so many - whether still fighting the fight or celebrating the triumph won over this horrible disease - it was the joy and strength of seeing them all come together. Yes, these women are cancer survivors. But wearing their pink and smiling for the camera, they seemed more like warriors to me. Throughout this month of October, please find ways to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Let’s find a cure.

or 25 years, Best Wishes has been the go-to destination for greeting cards, gifts and so much more. However, store owner Julie Van Noate’s involvement in the business reaches back much further to some 40 years. “My grandparents owned Gluskin’s Camera Corner on the Miracle Mile and then Gluskin’s Greetings in Weberstown Mall. I started there at age 15 and worked with both of my grandmothers, a privilege not many get to say they have had. Then I eventually ran the store,” she explained. Neil Gluskin and Julie Van Noate Opening Day October 1989

Fifteen years later, in October 1989, she opened Best Wishes at 325 Lincoln Center – a location she had been eyeing for some time. “I wanted a neighborhood store and to be part of the shopping center I had grown up in,” said Van Noate. “Neil Gluskin and I created the image in our heads of Best Wishes while having our weekly meetings at Gingham Gal coffee shop. Then we waited for the space to open up! Shortly after opening Best Wishes we closed the store in the mall.” Somewhere between then and now Van Noate became the owner of the store. “I can’t ever remember when that happened exactly because in my mind it was always mine,” she says. She eventually added 30 percent more retail space to Best Wishes, bringing the store to its present size. Today, Best Wishes is something of a one-stop shop. Store staples include Rosy Rings Candles, Old World Christmas Ornaments, Vera Bradley bags, Department 56 collectibles, and Mud Pie Gifts. Other offerings include Mariposa serving pieces, flags and banners, wreaths, table linens, and paper goods. They also specialize in wedding invitations.

FeaturedMERCHANT Over the years, store merchandise has mirrored ever-changing – and sometimes cyclical – trends. “When we opened, home décor was all blue and white,” Van Noate said. “Then it was country and then Tuscan. Now, it’s back to blue and white.” Merchandise has also reflected societal changes, including the impact of computer technology. Van Noate explained that as email use expanded, the shelf space dedicated to stationary shrank. “What has never changed, though, is that we provide the best customer service possible,” she said, noting that in spite of gains in Internet shopping, people still like to see and touch merchandise and appreciate complimentary gift wrapping. Another facet of Best Wishes’ customer service is always being open on Sundays. Van Noate plans to soon further expand store hours to provide even greater convenience. Over the years, she has developed personal relationships with many store customers. “We have really great friendships here,” Van Noate said. “Children who were brought in in strollers now bring in children of their own. It’s a small-town feeling.” n

appy fall! I’m hoping as I write this these cool mornings and nights extend through the day a bit longer! I can’t believe we are in the beginning of another season and with that comes a whole host of fall recipes and days in the kitchen simmering, stirring, baking, roasting....

Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes

One of my all-time favorite chicken recipes comes from an old friend who presented me with a steel cone that looked like it belonged in the garage on the work bench! I swear the “ALL IN THE KITCHEN” bag it came in had to be a tease, something to fool me! But I came to find if I placed that cone in my Le Creuset baker and stuck a whole chicken on it (only after dancing that whole chicken around a little to the delight of my children), surrounded it with veggies and popped it in the oven I had an entire meal in one pan. A healthy one at that! “Stand Up” Chicken is a staple at our house ...a favorite that turns into soup for the next night. I may not be the best cook but I love it and I’m practical. Any one meal that I can turn into two is MY favorite! Be sure to check out the cones and NEW “Palm” Le Creuset Bakeware and Stock Pots, a must for your kitchen! The best part of this recipe is you can use what you like, what’s in season or what’s easy... this is just something to go by!

Stand Up Chicken

1 whole chicken quartered onions quartered new potatoes ½ cup white wine

carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, any veggie you like to roast salt pepper

Place cone in baking dish, place washed chicken on cone, salt and pepper. Place dish in preheated 400-degree oven for 15 minutes or until it starts to slightly brown. Place veggies around base of chicken. Add 1/2 cup white wine over the top of the chicken. Lower heat to 350 degrees and cook approx. 40 minutes. Veggies should be nicely roasted and check chicken for doneness. Mind you... this dish goes oven to table for us. Some pick at the crispy skin, some pull a wing or a leg... others of us carve slices of breast... veggies remain hot and delish! Whatever is left promptly finds itself in a soup pot covered in water and simmers away the rest of the evening. I then strain the broth and pull the chicken to be used for the soup. THE KITCHENSIDE With fall here that means Halloween is just around the corner! With that brings memories of our neighborhood sidewalk so filled with costumed children we spilled into the gutter. We would pull our BBQ out to the driveway and continue a tradition my husband Reid’s neighbors started on Merrimac Circle growing up MANY years ago. We BBQ’d “Halloweenies” and served spider eggs to everyone and the “Witch’s Brew & Bloody Marys” made our house “the treat” for the moms and dads! It is seriously one of our favorite memories of the kids growing up!

With the popularity of Deviled Eggs these days you might want to try this for Halloween: Spider Eggs

After making your favorite deviled egg recipe… Take a black olive and cut it in half lengthwise Slice the olive halves lengthwise making sure you have eight slices Place four slices sticking out of the yolk part on each side This makes an eight-legged spider even the pickiest eater may like!

Meet Us AtTHE C ENTER rendered in tiny detail. The scenes depict old-fashioned farms and modern national retailers. Symbols of Americana are portrayed along with major city landmarks. Its places are populated by people, pets and production animals. Trains chugs around tracks; gondolas sway; a porch swing moves in an imaginary breeze. Decorated pine trees and lit houses abound. The effect is truly mesmerizing. Come experience it for yourself beginning November 16 at Holiday Open House. n

November 16 – January 4 The Christmas before last, Lincoln Center was home to Lyall A. Luke’s Snow Village display. Beginning November 16, Lincoln Center North will be home to the display again, which promises to rekindle old memories and spark new recollections. Lyall Luke, who passed away in 2005, set up the display in her garage for nearly two decades. Crowds pressed against the windows of her Benjamin Holt Drive garage every holiday season to view this magnificent display. “She loved Christmas and did the display for the purist of reasons: to give joy,” explained Luke’s daughter, Jill Wick, who reconstructed the village in her mother’s memory two years ago at Lincoln Center. The snow village is something of a study in contrasts: a grand landscape in miniature form. The main, three-tier display will sit behind 40 feet of storefront glass (the old Campbell’s in the Village location) – a medley of city, villages, farms, snow country and other locales all

November 16, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm It’s hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner! Our annual Holiday Open House event on Sunday, November 16 is your first opportunity to celebrate the Christmas season. Santa will make his very first appearance, along with his reindeer. How to improve By Marie Cottman, Pharm.D.

A

diagnosis of breast cancer is rightfully stressful for the patient, but it also adversely affects their family and close friends. A great way to make sure you are able to provide the needed support, love and care of the patient is to keep your body “stress tolerant.” Here are some basic lifestyle habits you can adopt to quickly improve your stress tolerance! Marie Cottman, Pharm.D.

Get rest. Get to bed by 10:00 pm every night and aim for at least seven to eight hours of sleep.

Eat healthy. Though you don’t need to go full Paleo, a high protein diet can help stabilize your blood sugar and keep your energy and immunity high. Small balanced meals every three hours can help as well (and may also prevent weight gain).

Pacific Compounding Pharmacy and Consultations 312 Lincoln Center (209) 474-7271 www.pacificcompound.com

Drink water. Our bodies are 70% water and if we don’t consume enough each day, we further stress our system! Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of fluid daily to prevent dehydration and promote healthy cellular function.

Minimize caffeine and sugar intake. During that mid-afternoon lull we often crave caffeine or sweets. However, this actually makes our body work harder to maintain energy; instead reach for a protein bar and a glass of water!

Vitamins and nutrients. Our body needs vitamins B5, B6, C, and several other trace nutrients when we are stressed. Supplementing these vitamins in the form of a “stress complex” with the addition of herbal adaptogens such as ashwaganda, licorice or ginseng can all help your body stay tolerant to stress. In Lincoln Center, you can find good products and recommendations to combat stress at Artesian Natural Foods or Pacific Compounding Pharmacy. n *Note: this is not intended to be a complete list, just some easy-to-adopt healthy habits.

The Importance of Exercise in Recovery By Jillian Barlet, B.S. Kinesiology Manager, Ben Mackie Fitness

E

Ben Mackie and Jillian Barlet of Ben Mackie Fitness

xercising and staying in shape is important for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. When it comes to life threatening diseases such as cancer, being physically fit can be especially helpful during and after treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are extremely taxing on the body and cause most individuals to be very weak and unable to sustain normal activities. However, being physically fit can help during diagnostic testing as well as recovery. It can help your chances of recovering faster as well as keep you strong mentally which will get you back on track sooner. Self-sufficiency and independence are very important for one’s mental state. Having the ability to remain independent while experiencing a serious illness can be greatly influenced by the amount of physical activity done beforehand.

Ben Mackie Fitness 840 W. Benjamin Holt Drive (209) 955-0360 www.benmackiefitness.com

All in all, exercise and a healthy lifestyle are recommended for just about everyone- whether you’re experiencing a serious illness or not. It produces feel good hormones, helps with metabolism and many other benefits. If you’re unsure where or how to begin working out, consider hiring a trainer or attending a fitness class. It’s always best to have supervision when beginning a new program. While we can’t predict the future or know if we will ever be in a fight for our lives, we can fuel our bodies, get strong and be our best selves today! n I’d like to thank Deanna Martinez, a client of Ben Mackie Fitness for sharing her personal experience of her fight with cancer and how exercise greatly influenced her recovery.

Make Time for Your Yearly Mammogram

W

hile breast cancer awareness and “pink” events have increased in recent years, breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. The fact is that nearly one out of every eight women is likely to develop breast cancer in her lifetime. But the good news is that survival rates for breast cancer are improving. Like all cancers, early detection of breast cancer greatly improves the chances that it can be treated successfully. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year, and continue to do so as long as they are in good health. A mammogram is designed to find breast cancer before it starts causing symptoms, so women should never wait until they suspect symptoms of cancer. Women with a family history of breast cancer have a higher risk of being diagnosed, and are recommended to begin annual mammograms at age 30.

On display November 16-January 4 Lit daily 4:30-10pm

If you are age 40 or older, or have a family history of breast cancer, speak with your primary care physician about your options for breast cancer screening or call St. Joseph’s Women’s Imaging Center at (209) 466-5028. n

‘Nspired’

e fit, Be healthy, BE YOU. This is the main philosophy at Nspire Nutrition, a health/wellness club that recently opened at Lincoln Center south. Nspire provides a service consisting of aloe, green tea and healthy meal replacement with more than 30 different flavors to choose from (including everything from ‘Beach Bum’ to Chocolate Chunky Monkey!). Each component of the nutrition service provides the nutrients needed to aid in weight loss, maintaining a healthy weight or gaining muscle after a workout. The service starts with a shot of aloe (which could also be added into the tea based on preference), which aids in digestion and soothing the stomach. Next is the green tea, which helps boosts your energy level and metabolism, burning from 80 to 100 calories. Last is the meal replacement, providing 24 grams of protein and all the essential nutrients and fiber needed for a healthy day - at around just 200 calories.

Maria shares more about Nspire Nutrition… What is the Six-Day Challenge? The six-day challenge is exactly what it sounds like– a six day challenge. In the challenge, we ask people to commit to our nutrition plan for six days and see what kind of results they achieve. The nutrition plan consists of using our product at home as a meal replacement and coming into the club for a second meal replacement. Accompanied with the meal replacements, we set you up with a nutrition plan consisting of lean protein snacks throughout the day. Before starting the six-day challenge, you’ll sit down with one of our wellness coaches to received vital information, such as your BMR and protein factor. We will also answer any questions you may have to make sure you are set up for success. The goal can be weight loss, muscle gain, or increasing energy through healthier eating. For me, the biggest and most satisfying change I have seen is a change in people’s mood, confidence level, and overall attitude. A healthy body is truly a happy body.

Some Facts About Botox

B

otox therapy is the most widely performed cosmetic procedure in America. It is a quick ten-minute procedure that requires no downtime or recovery period. Botox, a muscle relaxant, is used primarily by dermatologists to diminish the appearance of vertical and horizontal lines on the forehead and crow’s feet around the eyes. The procedure is relatively pain free. The effects of Botox are cumulative. Initially, one may elect to have Botox therapy every three to four months to diminish lines and wrinkles. Over time with continued use, the need for Botox lessens as the muscles relax.

therapy. On Thursdays at CVD, our dermatologist administers Botox. The product is formulated that day to ensure freshness. One final note…it is important to be realistic in your expectations with this therapy. Achieving a natural, beauty-enhancing look is the ultimate goal. n For more information about Botox therapy, contact Central Valley Dermatology.

If you have an important occasion and have never had Botox therapy, we suggest having your first treatment four to six months before that occasion. Then follow up with a second treatment one month before that special day.

New Transportation Options have Arrived!

W

ith the holiday season approaching, there’s plenty of cause for celebration. Lincoln Center’s many wonderful restaurants offer warm environments to get together with family and friends for some holiday cheer, but it’s important to remember to not drink and drive. Luckily, there are now more options than just calling a cab to get safely to and from gatheringsridesharing services like Lyft and Uber have made their way to Stockton, and they’re just a few clicks away on your smart phone! Both services have gained popularity across the county recently, as they’re safe, friendly, and extremely convenient. It just takes a few simple steps: 1. Find and download either or both of the apps from the Apple App Store or Google Play (Uber can be downloaded for Windows phones, but Lyft cannot) 2. Create an account with your email address and a valid credit card 3. When you need a driver, simply open up the app- the GPS settings will pinpoint your location, and all you have to do is click to request a driver Once a driver has been contacted, the app shows you your driver’s name and photo, details of the car they’re driving, and their distance away from you. You can track the driver’s progress on the app’s map, or you can put away your phone and wait for the text that notifies you that your driver is there. Most Lyft cars sport a large, pink mustache on their front bumpers, making them hard to miss!

YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE

Payments are made through the app after your ride is over, so you never need to worry about having cash on hand. Fares for both Lyft and Uber vary depending on traffic, weather and other factors. For example, a ride from Lincoln Center to the Brookside area generally costs $12-$16. Whether you choose Lyft or Uber is purely up to you- both are reliable, affordable, and easy to use, and both use local, background checked drivers. n

I can't say with 100% certainty that POMP would exist without their influence. I am forever grateful. I love Al and Joy and I wish for them GREAT joy and happiness. Their retirement is well deserved. Happy golfing!” – Dino Ballin
