To help you make the perfect selections for your fall wardrobe, check out FINA’s top five trends on page 18. On pages 16 – 17, see what many of our knowledgeable boutique owners have to say about the new trends that will complete your fall fashion collection. Speaking of new, we’re delighted to announce Midgley’s Public House opening on the Brickwalk in November. Midgley’s will be an exciting culinary experience serving American-fusion small plates/shared food. Chef Michael Midgley, who is best known for his appearances on “Top Chef” and “Cut Throat Kitchen”, has always dreamed of opening his own restaurant. Oh, and if you’re in the mood for something sweet, pop into Nothing Bundt Cakes, which will open on the Brickwalk (next to Noah’s Bagels) by September 6th. Their ‘buntinis’ and ‘bundlets’ make great gifts for birthdays or any occasion, but there’s no way you can leave the bakery without a few for yourself too! ears ago I found a little company called Market to Market. They create little packages of dip mixes that are wonderful! We often sample them at events or busy days for our customers to try. When we do I am amazed how many of them we sell. I ventured on to a few other food items such as Lucero’s Flavored Olive Oils and Vinegars and Caanan Farms Jalapeno Jelly (the best I’ve ever had by far). I have found the category something our customers love! We have just recently added a line because one of our favorite customers asked us to. Rothschild Farm dips and sauces (many of them gluten free) have found a new home on The KitchenSide. They are beautifully packaged and taste even better. Can you imagine “Hot Pepper Peach Preserves” and “Dirty Martini Dip” on the tip of your tongue? Often times these items start out as the perfect hostess gifts but an extra couple end up in the bags for home... irresistible! n

StyleWATC H Q: What are the fall footwear trends? Women’s: Booties are now a year round trend and we offer chunky heels, flat heels, wedges and stilettos all in the bootie style. They come in a variety of materials from suede, distressed leathers and quilted leathers. Grey is a big trend color this fall incorporated with colors like fatigue green, chestnut and cognacs. These colors go especially well with the casual bootie! Riding boot styles still continue to trend in leather and stretch suede. Oxfords and Drivers continue to be prevalent, meshing superior comfort and fashion. With a wide spread of colors to choose from, round toe ballet flats are always a must have. Pumps are always in style but this year the almond toe, low wedge, kitten heel, mid heel and higher heel are trending.

Men’s: Men’s footwear can see the renewal of classics from boots, deck shoes and Oxfords. Chukka Boots and Desert Boots are popular in suede and distressed leathers this season. Sperry Topsider boat shoes come in an array of textures. If you’re looking for a shoe to wear with denim, Oxfords are as versatile as they are timeless.

Q: What’s your favorite fall trend? A:

Denim! Boyfriend jeans are not too skinny yet not too slouchy. The ‘So Lifting’ slim leg jean incorporates hidden panels for a slim and smooth tummy while also creating a lift look in the back. Jeggings are the best of both worlds as they take the traditional look of jeans yet the comfort of leggings. Wear your denim with pink shades and crochet for a soft feminine look.

Our favorite fall trend is a skinny jean or legging (especially this year with leather detail) paired with boots, ankle or knee high, topped with a long cozy cardigan sweater or finger tip length coat. Casual and comfy but very chic!
These fall shades of black mixed with a touch of lace are the new trend, especially paired with fabulous crystal accessories. We invite you to visit our boutique to discover the latest simply fall collection.

Layering! Layering involves dressing in a number of lightweight clothes, instead of one or two heavy items, making it easy to add or remove articles of clothing depending on weather. Layering creates an exciting new look while still staying comfortable!

With the start of fall comes many things - kids heading off to college, the start of another football season, an abundance of pumpkin flavored treats. In all the activity that autumn brings, take time to care for yourself by considering your risk factors for cancers that occur below the belt. September is both National Ovarian Cancer and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States. While ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. Although the exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, risk factors for men include being age 40 – 75, having a family history of prostate cancer, and being African American. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, watch for symptoms such as abnormal or bloody urine, abnormal or bloody bowel movements, and bone pain, and ask your doctor about getting screened today. Women over age 40 with a personal or family history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer should be extra vigilant in watching for early symptoms of ovarian cancer. Symptoms include pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, feeling the need to urinate urgently or often.

Attitude T before Altitude Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
his summer, Lincoln Center’s own Phil Johnson and eight other Stocktonians traveled to Tanzania with the common goal of reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa: Chris Bascaglia, Gina Bascaglia, Kevin Basso, Dan DeLuca, Fred DeLuca, John DeLuca, Rick Northcutt and John Zeiter. After six days of climbing in the unspoiled African wilderness, living the Swahili phrase, pole, pole (slowly, slowly), the group worked together, traveling through five distinct climate zones, to achieve their dream. They left on the morning of June 25th with 5 guides, 2 cooks and 21 porters bound for the start of the Lemosho Route, the longest, but arguably the most beautiful and most successful of the seven routes used to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. Each day, as they climbed higher and higher (12,800 ft, 15,200 ft, 18,900 ft,) through an ever-changing landscape, they were faced with new challenges, but continued pushing - moving forward, step by step. Acute Mountain Sickness, hiking in the pitch darkness of the night, one foot in front of the other, sleepless nights and exhaustion. Attitude before altitude became their mantra. Keep going!
Phil Johnson, Gina Buscaglia, Chris Buscaglia, John Zeiter, Kevin Basso and Rick Northcutt (Not pictured: Dan, John and Fred Deluca)
“Conquering Kilimanjaro was definitely one of the most difficult challenges I’ve faced in my lifetime, both physically and mentally. What helped get me through was a lot of prayer and knowing I had the support of my family back home.” -Phil Johnson
The details of day four especially stand out in the minds of the hikers. The group awoke in good spirits knowing this day would bring a relatively short hike of five kilometers to the Karanga Valley Campsite (13,300 ft.); however, fifteen minutes out of camp, they found themselves at the base of the Great Barranco Wall where the guides politely grabbed the trekking poles stating that they would need both hands and both feet to scramble up this steep trail for approximately two hours. About halfway up where the trail turns sharply to the left, climbers have no choice but to “kiss the wall,” as one step back off the trail and they’d be kissing something else good-bye. Once over the top of the Barranco Wall, they quickly descended through the lush, green Karanga Valley and then up a very steep 30-minute climb to the campsite. Their elation of reaching camp before lunchtime was quickly squelched, when their guides told them to rest up for an acclimation climb to 14,500 ft prior to dinner. Finally, on June 30th eight climbers reached Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet. With the sun just peaking over the clouds below, there were a lot of tears, hugs and photos. Slowly, slowly, their attitude pushed them through the daunting concern of the altitude. An eclectic group of professionals from Stockton, who came to know and depend on each other far more than they had ever imagined. They had arrived. And then it was time to turn around and descend back down the mountain. n

ince 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association has mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. Now, the Association asks you to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s calls on people of all ages to take action in the fight. The Alzheimer’s Association is
the largest private funder of Alzheimer’s research and the leading voice for Alzheimer’s disease advocacy at the federal and state levels. The Association also has local branches throughout the United States that provide local services like a 24-hour helpline, support groups, educational workshops, care consultation, and caregiver training. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country across all ages. It is progressive and is the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured, or even significantly slowed. Currently, over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s, and by the year 2050, the number of Americans affected is projected to triple unless serious medical breakthroughs are made. Over the past two years at the Stockton Walk, the San Joaquin community has raised over $130,000! This year’s goal is to raise $70,000 to support the programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Association, as well as to support the research needed to make a world without Alzheimer’s a reality. For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, please visit www.alz.org. Register online for the Walk or make a donation at www.alz.org/walk.
