Lasting Legacy

by Caitlin Hamer

W

hen asked why Cavagnaro’s Shoe Repair has had such longevity, owner Dan Cavagnaro had a simple answer: “My grandpa taught my dad and uncle to do good, honest work.” Considering that Cavagnaro’s is celebrating its 80th anniversary on September 1, it’s clear that the superior workmanship these men inherited is key to their success. It was 1935 when Tony Cavagnaro opened his first shoe repair shop in Stockton, but the family’s history of working in that particular trade didn’t just start there. Tony’s father had learned shoe repair in Italy, and once Tony picked it up, he passed it and his business on to his sons, John and Leonard, both of whom began working in their father’s shop at the age of ten. John took over the business in 1961, and when he retired in 1995, Leonard took up the reins. At one point there were three shops in operation, but now their only location is in Lincoln Center. Dan is now the latest of the Cavagnaro’s to run the business. He’s got quite the future planned for it, too. “I want this place to make it to one hundred years,” said Dan. “I’m forty-five, so I’ve got it in me.” Cavagnaro’s Owner Dan Cavagnaro

While Dan did start working in the shop when he was young, he wasn’t entirely sure if he would take over the family business. He had inherited another passion from his family, and that was a love for classic cars. He learned how to build hot rods and was becoming skilled at car painting and upholstery. But when his father got sick, he knew that taking over the shop was what he was supposed to do. However, in spite of being “married to the job,” he still finds time for his cars, including a 1930 Ford Model A that he likes to drive at least once a week. He also tends to park classic cars outside the shop, as his father had advised, so that customers would associate the cars with the business. Dan laments that shoe repair is a lost art, something that has become prevalent now that we live in what he calls a “throw away society.” But there is still a need for shoe repair, be they heels or work boots, or even Uggs that need washing. Other services offered are orthopedic build ups and repairs on just about anything leather, including luggage and baseball mitts. The shop also features a shoe shine stand, a feature that Dan is very proud of. There is also a full line of merchandise in the shop, including jewelry, hats, sunglasses and purses.

A huge part of keeping any business going is customer loyalty, and Dan is very thankful for those who have returned to the shop over the years, especially those who come in from places like Lodi, Lockeford and Rio Vista. “These people watched me grow up here,” he said. “Some of them knew my grandfather. They want to see my family do well, so they keep coming back.” It’s still very much a family business. Dan’s mother will be returning to the shop to help out from time to time, and Dan also hopes his uncle Leonard will be back to assist behind the scenes. To add to the friendly atmosphere, Dan will often bring in his dogs, Fred, Ginger and Elvis. For a business so rich in history, it’s reassuring to know that it continues to be in good hands, and will be for quite some time. “We’re not going n anywhere,” Dan promised.

Living with Lung Cancer, Unaware? By Gaurav Singh, MD If you are, or were a heavy smoker, you could be living with lung cancer, unaware. Lung cancer usually does not present any symptoms till it is somewhat advanced, and when caught at these late stages, it is often difficult to treat successfully. Although lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death for both men and women, early stage lung cancer is not only treatable, but often curable. That’s why it is vitally important for those at risk to be screened. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear before getting screened. The best way to beat lung cancer is by finding it early, before it has a chance to spread.

Dr. Gaurav Singh is a board certified radiation oncologist with Dignity Health Medical Group Stockton and the Medical Director of St. Joseph’s Cancer Institute.

If you are an active or former smoker and you’re age 55-74 years old, or over 50 with a family history of lung cancer, talk to your primary care doctor about getting screened for lung cancer. Now that lung cancer screening is covered by Medicare Part B and all major insurances, it’s easier than ever for those qualified to get screened. To learn more about lung cancer screening services available through St. Joseph’s Cancer Institute, call 209.939.4526 or visit StJosephsCares.org/Cancer.

ith the back-to-school buzz dying down and a new season quickly approaching, it’s time to fill your wardrobe with some of the most essential fall fashion looks. From flannels to faux fur to fringe, our Lincoln Center boutiques are here to keep your look up to date and provide you with the hottest trends for the upcoming season. One fashion tip for men, women and kids to keep in mind this fall is layering. Not only does it keep you warm, but it also makes any outfit more interesting! Pair a flannel with a t-shirt and jeans for a comfy look, or try sporting a flannel and a leather jacket with a fashionable scarf for a dressier ensemble. Sperry’s and Birkenstocks are the perfect addition to fall outfits for both men and women! Still not ready to completely let go of summer? No worries! Another emerging trend this fall is incorporating some of your favorite pieces from summer with warmer ones. Try wearing a blazer with a pair of stylish shorts or a romper, or pairing a tank top with some skinny jeans and booties. Men, don’t hesitate to add a hat, sweatshirt or jacket to complete your look. Don’t be afraid of color! Mix bold colors such as orange and purple with earthy neutrals. Most importantly, have fun with your outfits this fall!

STOP BY OUR LINCOLN CENTER BRANCH OR CALL Benae Schmidt | (209) 367-2319 | NMLS#805918 1 This promotion is available for a limited time and may be withdrawn at any time. The promotional Annual Percentage Rate (APR) will be 1.99% and will not increase for the first 6 months after the date of closing. After the introductory period, the APR is variable and is based upon an index plus a margin. The APR will vary with Prime Rate (the index) as published in the Wall Street Journal. As of 7/1/2015, the variable rate for home equity lines of credit ranged from 4.00% APR to 5.25% APR. Higher rates may apply for lines secured by second homes/investment properties, lines without automatic payments from a F&M Bank checking account, or with a loan-to-value (LTV) at or above 70%. The rate will not vary above 16% APR. Existing F&M Bank equity loans or lines are not eligible. Not all customers will qualify for this promotional offer. 2 This APR is based on an owner occupied primary residence with a LTV below 70% and automatic payments made from a F&M Bank checking account. Alternative rates and terms are available depending on your qualifications. 3 Third party fees generally ranging from $150 to $1,500 may apply. Maximum LTV ratio is 80%. No condos, co-ops and single or double wide manufactured homes. Annual fee of $75 which is waived in the first year and waived in future years, if you maintain an outstanding average daily balance of at least $20,000. Line has a 10 year interest-only payment draw period and a 15 year repayment period. During the interest-only period principal balance is not reduced. At the end of this period, your monthly payment will increase, possibly substantially, even if the interest rate stays the same because you will be required to pay down the outstanding principal balance. Always consider paying more than the minimum payment to pay down the principal. Property insurance is required. This information is accurate as of 7/1/2015 and is subject to change without notice. Ask us for the current index and margin. NMLS 435145. © 2015 Farmers and Merchants Bank of Central California. All rights reserved. MSR 3357-LCC 8/15

Crimson Tides The faint crispness in the air marks the summer’s end and a new beginning. The amber inflections in the sunsets lay a warm backdrop to a season of change and lead our minds to contemplate the trends of the upcoming months. The comfortable temperatures have us not yet committed to a heavier fabric, but definitely toward a richer, fuller vibe. Bold floral batiste patterns and vibrant deep reds seem to be the trends coming at us. Shades of mauve and clay give a sophisticated look to the everyday natural tones. Although crisp summer whites may soon be folded away with our linen cottons, we should keep in mind that varying tones such as cream, sand and stone will still offer the lightness of white without the stark contrast. Yet, sometimes most compliments come from stark contrasts and atypical pairings. I like to mix bold patterns with quiet prints to create a complete look. Da-Vid Alejo of POMP Salon

For this article, I have asked our POMP Salon neighbors to contribute some ideas for a fall wardrobe. But what of hair you may ask? Have you heard of Olaplex? It’s all the rage in the hair industry. They speak of Olaplex as “insurance for your hair”. Sometimes a client will come in to the salon asking for a service that scares the bejeezus out of us because the desired service may seriously compromise the integrity of the hair. Adding Olaplex provides “insurance” for such a service-not in the State Farm sense but in a chemical sense. Olaplex is a bond multiplier that allows a stylist to push the envelope without damaging one’s hair. In fact, using Olaplex will make hair dramatically healthier, leaving your hair softer, shinier and more loveable. We all want to love our hair! Ask your stylist about Olaplex. I had an amazing summer of adventure. I hope you did too! My time here in Lincoln Center has been wonderful and I look forward to the seasons ahead! Until next time, Ciao. –Da-Vid

S

ince 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association has mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. Now, the Association asks you to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s calls on people of all ages to take action in the fight. The Alzheimer’s Association is

22

the largest private funder of Alzheimer’s research and the leading voice for Alzheimer’s disease advocacy at the federal and state levels. The Association also has local branches throughout the United States that provide local services like a 24-hour helpline, support groups, educational workshops, care consultation, and caregiver training. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country across all ages. It is progressive and is the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured, or even significantly slowed. Currently, over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s, and by the year 2050, the number of Americans affected is projected to triple unless serious medical breakthroughs are made. Over the past three years at the Stockton Walk, the San Joaquin community has raised over $200,000! This year’s goal is to raise $90,000 to support the programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Association in our area, as well as to support the research needed to make a world without Alzheimer’s a reality. For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, please visit alz.org. Register online for the Walk or make a donation at alz.org/walk. To make a corporate donation to the Walk or become a sponsor, please contact the 2015 Stockton Walk To End Alzheimer’s Chair Mark McDonald at (310) 951-4624 or Co-Chair Layla Baskin n at (209) 242-3716.

he 8th Annual Super Bowl Raffle will kick off on September 1 to once again raise funds for thirty-two participating San Joaquin County charities. Since its inception, the raffle has raised $2.5 million dollars to help run critical programs for students, families and children in need. The Community Foundation of San Joaquin is delighted to serve again as the host for this unique event. “We are very pleased to partner with the organizing committee of the Super Bowl Raffle and the Spanos Family in this very important fundraising project. We’re especially excited this year because Super Bowl 50 will be held in Santa Clara.” said Linda Philipp, CEO and President of the Community Foundation of San Joaquin. “We’re proud to be able to offer support to our local nonprofits that work so hard every day to lift spirits and make this a better place to live for everyone. Last year we raised more than $424,000 and we hope to surpass that amount this year.”
