business that offers exceptional customer service along with the most advanced technology available doesn’t come around every day. American Hearing Aids, owned by Debbie Bond and Mitch Conception, is one of these businesses. Debbie and Mitch have extensive experience in the hearing aid industry and are committed to fitting each customer with a hearing aid that is personalized for their lifestyle.
Mitch Conception & Debbie Bond of American Hearing Aids
“We’re very friendly but also very professional. We strike a good balance.” - Debbie Bond
Hearing aid technology has progressed immensely, and the industry looks forward to more and more improvements. “The advancements we’ve seen in technology are really exciting,” Debbie said. To ensure they always offer the most advanced technology, Debbie and Mitch work with a research lab in Berkeley that designs new technology to improve the hearing aid. Hearing aids can now wirelessly connect to iPods, or even cell phones. In addition, they’re no longer large, clunky—or even visible. Debbie has an aid made for her ear to demonstrate just how invisible they really are. When she slips it into her ear, it completely disappears. Few understand the full extent of what exactly they’re getting back with a hearing aid. “Gaining hearing back is so much more than just hearing,” Debbie said. “People don’t realize that one of the things about hearing loss is loss of confidence—confidence in everything, not just social situations.” With over fifteen years in the hearing aid industry, Debbie and Mitch have the experience and the expertise to handle any difficulty thrown their way. On top of that, they each are extremely passionate about the business. “It’s the coolest job ever,” Debbie said.

News fromTHE KI TC HENSIDE
at T
wo years ago this October we launched The KitchenSide at Best Wishes. Our goal was to provide a full line kitchen store within Best Wishes space filled with quality lines for our loyal customers who prefer to shop in a locally owned small business. As we look back at the success of the addition, we look forward to our continued growth with new lines and excitement as fall approaches! I will take this opportunity monthly to remind you of tried and true kitchen items and cookware, and hopefully introduce you to new ones. I encourage you to share with us recipes you have tried using our cookware and bakeware and may ask if I can use them here in this article. Julie Van Noate of Best Wishes
With fall in the air we can’t help but think about cooler weather and our kitchens filling with the smell of freshly baked goodies. For me it will be the beginning of getting back into the kitchen with some of my favorite recipes. When we first opened The KitchenSide I treated myself to a new cookie sheet made by USA Pans. As all of my family will tell you, although I love to cook, I’m not a baker and welcome any help I can get! For once in my life with the use of my new cookie sheet I didn’t burn the bottom of my cookies. I had to explore what it was about these pans that was different and this is what I found... “USA Pan Bakeware is constructed of heavy gauge aluminized steel with a fluted surface and is coated with a clear non-stick, environmentally friendly silicone that is specially formulated for superior baking and does not contain any PTFE or PFOA.” What that means is it is heavy duty (commercial grade) and bakes evenly. It doesn’t stick and won’t make you sick with any awful added chemicals. And best of all...it’s MADE IN THE USA. So, now I have two cookie sheets, two muffin pans, a lasagna pan and a meat loaf pan. I am ready for the cooking season to begin! I may even attempt something more challenging than cookies! Thanks to my pans I’ve got those down! n

Women’sHEALTH A Friendly Reminder to Get Checked
I
THINK PINK RAFFLE
n 2013 alone, approximately 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. Like all cancers, early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that it can be treated successfully. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and continue to do so as long as they are in good health. A mammogram is designed to find breast cancer before it starts causing symptoms, so women should never wait until they suspect symptoms of cancer. Women with a family history of breast cancer have a higher risk of being diagnosed, and are recommended to begin annual mammograms at age 30.
Join us through the month of October for the Think Pink Raffle, sponsored by participating Lincoln Center merchants. Step inside 16 businesses and enter to win the items on display (listed below). A donation of just $1 to St. Joseph’s Breast Health Services will get you a raffle ticket. Enter as many times and at as many places as you wish. Your donation really does make a difference! Winners will be notified during the first week of November.
Think Pink Raffle Items, Valued at $100 or More:
If you are 40 or older, or have a family history of breast cancer, consider speaking with your primary care physician or call St. Joseph’s Women’s Imaging Center at (209) 466-5028 about your options for breast cancer screening. n

Women’sHEALTH Relax Your Way to Health Regular massages keep the doctor away—they can be preventative medicine.
Vivian Tierney of Therapeutic Massage Center
E
veryone knows that massages are great way to relax, but the full benefits of a therapeutic massage may surprise you. They not only relax tense muscles but can also strengthen the immune system, increase blood circulation, improve the quality of sleep, and much more—including reduce stress, a big threat to the health of many. How? Therapeutic massages are specialized to target not just aches and pains but the source of the pain, leaving the client relaxed, healthy, and rejuvenated. “I look for the problem—what could be causing this pain?” Vivian Tierney, owner of Therapeutic Massage Center, said. “And when I find it, it’s very relaxing for the client.” Therapeutic massages help a client feel better for longer than the immediate experience. And they’re not just for those in pain. According to Vivian, regular therapeutic massages “maintain a status quo of good health.” “It’s like the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’,” she said. “Regular massages keep the doctor away—they can be preventative medicine.” With her comprehensive understanding of muscles and nerves in the body, Vivian is excellent at seeking out what exactly a customer needs to leave feeling relaxed and pain-free. She’s been doing therapeutic massages for 15 years, after seeing an advertisement for a massage training program while driving down Pacific Ave. “I took a chance,” she said, “and the rest is history.” The chance Vivian took all those years ago has led to an incredible place for wellness, health, and healing. Whether you are experiencing stiffness, soreness, or any other discomfort, or are pain-free and just want to relax, therapeutic massages just might be the way to go. n

Women’sHEALTH What I Learned from my Mom about Health… By Meredith Yerke of Artesian Natural Foods
A
Meredith & Leslie of Artesian Natural Foods
s far back as I can remember, my mom (Leslie Brennan, owner of Artesian Natural Foods) has always had her hands in health foods and natural supplements. When I was growing up I never understood or really cared much, but I followed along. Now that I am older and have my own family I find myself looking back and am so thankful. As things in my life have changed so have my needs but the simple foundation of diet, exercise and supplements has remained. Diet is one of those ever-changing things. Over time, I’ve learned how certain foods affect my body and the importance of listing to my body’s response to foods. I’ve learned that my mom’s advice—Eat what is good for you. Your body will like it—rings true. I’ve started to eat sweet potatoes, kale and lots of salads, less dairy and sugars. My advice to pass on is to simply listen to your body and it will tell you what it needs and what it doesn’t like. Exercise has been one of my biggest battles, but I know how important it is and at the end of the day there really is an activity for all. If my mom can pull off Pilates twice a week I should have no issue doing something. It’s really just about making the choice to do it. Supplements can seem scary when you’re just starting out. My mom made it really easy for me as a young person and I have always made supplements my foundation. While I regularly try new things, my core foundation is a one a day multi vitamin, a healthy oil (flax, omega 3, etc.), a B-Complex and a Probiotic. Life is complicated and taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be. I am thankful to my mother for teaching me these lessons early on. Keep it simple and if you’re in need of some advice or help, stop into Artesian Natural Foods and we’ll be happy to share our wisdom with you. n

Women’sHEALTH Q&A’s with Jillian Barlet from Ben Mackie Fitness Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting to get healthy? A: “My initial advice to individuals beginning a new health and wellness program is to take it one day at a time. If you are unhealthy and haven’t done much activity it’s important to remember that your body is going to have to adjust to the new added stress and over doing it can Jillian Barlet, trainer at sometimes hurt you rather Ben Mackie Fitness than help. Taking it one day at a time also means even if you have a bad day whether it be what you ate or skipping a workout, there’s always tomorrow to pick yourself back up and continue what you started.” Q: What’s a good way to incorporate workouts into a busy schedule? A: “You always have time to workout, even if it’s short 10 to 20 minute intervals on your lunch break. Rather than focusing on a length of time that you “should” work out for, focus on the quality of your workout. Get the most out of your time by doing short, high intensity exercises that require little to no equipment. For example, push ups, sit ups, Burpees and squats can all be performed with your own body weight and no equipment.”
Q: If someone is working out regularly, does she still need to watch what she eats? A: “Diet is the biggest piece of the puzzle. Working out will help build muscle and burn calories; however, a poor diet can unwind all of your hard work. A good diet and regular exercise is all it takes to stay healthy but if it were easy, we wouldn’t be experiencing an obesity epidemic.” Q: What are some strategies to keep motivated? A: “Try out different classes, running groups, and facilities. Consider training for a 5k race or mud run.” Q: What’s your biggest tip for women trying to get healthy now? A: “Don’t wait to get started! Educate yourself on healthy eating and if you need assistance or aren’t sure how to start, hire a personal trainer.” Ben Mackie Fitness is a private studio offering personal training, Pilates and Yoga with highly qualified and experienced personal trainers. One-on-one or group workouts specifically tailored to your health and fitness goals in a private studio provide a welcoming and unintimidating atmosphere where enjoyment and your health and safety are their priority. Add Pilates or Yoga to your workout schedule with certified instructors to compliment your routine and improve flexibility, core strength and overall well-being. Expert nutritional advice and diet planning is included along with complete body composition analysis and measurements to ensure accurate weight loss and management. n
Q: How can women find a workout that works for them? A: “Be adventurous and try different classes, trainers, workout buddies, etc.”
840 W. Benjamin Holt Dr. (209) 955-0360 www.benmackiefitness.com
Q: Should women vary what they do to work out? A: “It’s really important to change up your workout routine regularly. If you perform the same exercises for the same length of time everyday your body will adapt very quickly. A combination of strength training, cardio vascular exercise, stretching and interval training will keep your body guessing and get you into shape.”
