LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE

s spring sets forth and a new season emerges here at Lincoln Center, I do not have to look far for inspiration for my editorial this month. Finding subject matter is easy. I just have to look around at the dedicated merchants that fill the Center, our loyal customers and our hardworking staff to be inspired.

Our merchants have been busily stocking the newest spring fashions, eateries are sourcing the finest farm to table delicacies, and patrons are lingering along the Brickwalk. The changing of seasons is a time of reflection, and an ideal time to remember and refine our mission here at Lincoln Center: to serve our community, support our merchants in every way possible and to always put our best foot forward. It is also a time to celebrate the many business entrepreneurs who have influenced and continue to spread their influence in San Joaquin County. These men and women have taken chances. They have opened storefronts, launched products and contributed to the betterment of our community as a whole.

In this issue we celebrate the past and future of Lincoln Center; with an eye always on the present and how we can continue to create and deliver the best local shopping and entertainment value for our community. We are forever grateful to merchants such as Jack Ju, an owner/partner in New Yen Ching, who passed recently. And Marie Cottman of Pacific Compounding Pharmacy who was recently recognized for her service to Girl Scouts of America. And of course the vision of our newest restaurants: Prime Table, Café Rio and Pieology. I hope you'll enjoy reading this issue of the Chronicle. Each Lincoln Center merchant is unique, but there is a shared purpose: to continue the legacy set forth by these innovators and make the Center the premier shopping, entertainment and dining experience in the Valley. We are always looking for future ways to bring you what you want. The Chronicle is one of many “voices” of the Center and is committed to keeping you updated and informed with all the happenings. Mark your calendars for some of your past favorites as well as some new activities you won’t want to miss. My door is always open to suggestions. Happy springing!

On the C OVER

O

n the cover of this month’s issue is David and Melissa Jackson and their kids, Jake (8 years) and Reagan (5 years). David and Melissa were both born and raised in Stockton. Melissa’s dad owned Ortize Pharmacy in Lincoln Center for many years so she spent much of her childhood in the Center. After college, Melissa returned to Stockton and taught primary grade children in Lincoln Unified School District. She taught first grade at her alma matter, Claudia Landeen where she encouraged children to read and write and fell in love with children’s literature. Once she had her own children she became a full-time mother and was soon inspired to write a book about the special relationship between her daughter Reagan and her beloved stuffed bunny, Bun Bun. After all, Bun Bun had been through a lot and her adventures – including being thrown out of the car window and retrieved and returned to Reagan by the Highway Patrol – became family favorite stories to tell. The book was originally written as a gift to her kids, Jake and Reagan, but as they shared their story with others it became apparent that this special relationship that children have with their favorite stuffed animal or blanket is a relatable one to all. The story has a unique approach in that it is told from the perspective of Bun Bun – sharing with readers what it would be like to be dragged around by your ears everywhere you go. Told with humor, this is a story about love, friendship and devotion. Melissa’s clothes and shoes are from FINA, David’s shirt, shoes and watch are from Zuesters and his jeans are available at FINA. Jake’s shirt is from McCaulou’s and his shorts and shoes can be found at Zuesters. Reagan’s outfit head to toe can be found at Sassy Pants Children’s Boutique. n

ibeye, Filet Mignon, Prime Rib. These are just a few of the incredible dishes you're going to find at Prime Table here in Lincoln Center. Owned and operated by the owners of Market Tavern, the newest addition to the Center has been quite the success so far.

Since both Market Tavern and Prime Table try to use as many fresh, locally grown ingredients as possible, there will be seasonal vegetables on the menu, including favorite springtime asparagus. And you can even find local ingredients in the cocktail list, with choices like Linden Cherry or Black Walnut Manhattans. There is also a carefully cultivated wine list, which includes many local wines, but also some old-world varietals to choose from.

Since its opening in December 2016, Prime Table has been living up to its name by serving high-quality, American beef. “The quality of meat is high, and the way it’s prepared, along with the equipment we bought to prepare it, complements the beef,” said Nick DiArenzo, co-owner of Prime Table.

Alongside the beef, they're also serving up some of the best sides in town, like Triple Cooked Fries, a Wild Shrimp Cocktail, French Onion Soup, or take a healthier route with Brussels & Cauliflower. Prime Table is also offering seafood and vegetarian options.

The interior décor of the restaurant was planned just as carefully as the menu. Comprised of the main dining area with the bar, and a banquet room, Prime Table even has its televisions set to black and white to add to the ambiance. As you first walk in the door you are greeted with vintage classics like Audrey Hepburn artwork, a Frank Sinatra headshot and music that makes you feel as if you’re in a different era. “The vibe of the place complements the food and makes for a unique

Their love for the restaurant business and supplying Stockton with the most high-quality food at fair prices. ne of the pioneer families of Linden had established a diverse and successful farm raising row crops and livestock. Then in 1960, Karl Grupe ventured out to plant cherries on the Homestead Ranch. Since then, the next generations have continued to provide some of the finest cherries in the area. Bing cherries are harvested and shipped around the world to fresh markets. The same delicious fruit produced and sun-rippened on the trees are also picked to create Homestead Favorites Cherry Jellies by Charlyn Grupe Hulsman. The juice is extracted the same day to preserve its fruitfulness and retain its delicious flavor. Making these jellies for their family and friends was a tradition for Charlyn and her mother Fran. She now shares her scrumptious jellies through stores and wineries in the region. t’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love a great hotdog – and we all know that the ‘go-to’ hot dog shop in Stockton is D.A.D.’s Dogs! It was nice to sit down with Diane and chat about her popular hot dog shop – discussing her passion, her life and a variety of other tid-bits. Enjoy.

What is your favorite food? Hot dogs of course – but also tacos!

Tell us more about the pictures on the walls of the restaurant. That was Denise’s idea and it was a good one. They are my customers that go back for years. Some are gone now but I wish we would have done this when I first opened in 1979.

What is one thing you are most proud of? I am extremely proud of being in business for 38 years. I love working with Denise and Danielle! What do you like to do on your days off? On my days off I enjoy working in my yard and playing cards. What do you like to do for fun? In addition to owning D.A.D.’s Dogs, I am also a farmer of almonds and walnuts. I love being outside and working in the fields.

What does D.A.D.’s Dogs stand for? Diane and Dogs

What is your favorite thing about working at D.A.D.’s? My customers – I love meeting and talking to customers new and old alike. How would you order your hotdog? My go to hot dog is a chili cheese dog with onions.

Tell us about one regular customer who stands out. Victor Espinoza has been here since day one. A lot of my customers recognize him from years ago when he played his guitar on the corner of Pershing. Everyone knows his name, he goes by Victor Elvis. He is a sweetheart and he comes in almost every day. We look forward to seeing him. He puts a smile on our faces. n

Uncle Ed and Emma Talk about growing up in the Center. If you have come to any of our Lincoln Center events (big or small) in the last 5 years, chances are you have seen Ed, a beloved member of our Maintenance crew. If he’s not working to make sure the event goes off without a hitch you are sure to find him enjoying the evening with Emma, an adorable five-year-old. Emma and her mom, Amy, are good family friends of Ed and they love spending time with “Uncle Ed” here in the Center. The Children’s Play Area is a must for Emma every time she visits the Center. The Heart of a Champion From Shortness of Breath to Dancing the Twist! When it comes to finishing in first place, Jim Christensen is well-versed. Jim’s list of first place finishes seems endless - waterskiing, bowling, baseball, boxing, racing, dancing - you name it and he’s won it. True to form, first-place-Jim was the first patient to undergo a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. “I couldn’t walk across a room, before having to stop and catch my breath,” explained Jim. Jim was suffering from severe aortic valve stenosis, which is a narrowing of his heart’s aortic valve opening. This condition is life-threatening, and treatment is critical. Instead of traditional open heart surgery to fix his valve, Jim was able to qualify for TAVR. This less invasive procedure uses a catheter to insert a new valve within the native diseased aortic valve, via a small incision in the leg. Jim had the TAVR procedure performed in the new Cardiac Hybrid Suite at St. Joseph’s. After a short stay in the hospital, he was back home and “ready to do the twist.”

St. Joseph’s Valve Clinic St. Joseph’s is proud to now offer a Valve Clinic, featuring a team of specialists dedicated to treating patients with various stages of heart disease, from advanced procedures like Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), to disease management. Call our Heart Patient Navigator at 209.467.6540 or visit StJosephsCares.org/ Heart to learn more.
