LET'S

I recently completed my second reading of Jon Gordon’s book, “The Power of Positive Leadership.” The word “Power” speaks volumes. Each of us has the capacity to create thriving home, work and community environments. The path of positivity is vital to achieving superior results— and everyone can choose it.    Gordon’s book reminds me that what we send out into the world is what we receive back. I am inspired by the 90 plus Lincoln Center merchants, and various key leaders who have categorically created success through their positive influence and contributions to our community.   This month’s feature story is about one of our exemplary tenants and community leaders — Bud’s Seafood Grille. The Milsap Family is celebrating 25 years in business this month. Stop in and say hello to Bud, Jeanne and Matt — have dinner, drinks and bar bites, or plan your next banquet. Because they are always striving to create a great dining experience for their patrons, Bud’s will soon be remodeling their storefront and interior. Read Bud’s history on page 16.    Our cover this month features POMP Hair Company. Read the inside story how 25 years ago owners Dino Ballin and Vicki Kirk started a small salon and built it into the successful business it is today. Turn to page 22 for this inspiring story.    In the Community section this month we highlight business and community leader Kathleen Lagorio Janssen. Janssen was the honoree and keynote speaker at the 7th Annual Empowering Young Women event held at St. Mary’s High School in early March.   On page 21, you will find the seven Lincoln High School graduates who will be inducted into the high school’s Hall of Fame on April 21, 2018. Including Roya Soleimani, sister of Arezou Soleimani, Market Tavern and Prime Table Beverage Director. Roya is the Consumer Communication Manager, Social Good at Facebook, overseeing communications for the company’s charitable giving products and initiatives. It’s people like Roya that continue to make me proud to be a graduate of LHS!   The Easter Bunny will be hopping into the Center quickly this year! Bring the kids and grandchildren to visit the Bunny at McCaulous’ Department Store, March 24-25 and March 3031 from 12:00 - 4:00 pm. Visiting the Easter Bunny is free and children will receive a special treat. As you prepare for Easter festivities and springtime entertaining, make Lincoln Center your stop for home décor items, and that new outfit! After visiting Silveria’s Floral & Gifts for that special centerpiece, stop by CR Porter Home Collection and meet the new owners Mat and Tyler Ferdun-Wood. For a complete list of basketstuffer ideas, check out page 10.   Surround yourself with positive energy, influence others, and be inspired by those around you — it is contagious! Thank you to all of the extraordinary leaders in our community who continue to believe in themselves and the San Joaquin County. All my best,

Phil D. Johnson, President

PAT & CURTIS | CARATS JEWELRY Tell us about your background. How did you first get started in the retail industry? I was in the human resources industry when a downsizing gave me an opportunity to try a different career. As a jewelry lover, I decided to open a fashion jewelry store in Stockton. Being in Lincoln Center has been the perfect fit for Carats. Use three words to describe your store. Fun, fun, fun. Where did you grow up? How did you get to Stockton? I grew up in San Francisco and moved to San Jose for college. I met and married Curtis, who was a pharmacist at the time. After 13 years in San Jose, we moved to Stockton which offered more affordable housing. Curtis was born and raised in Stockton so moving here was the right decision. Our son, Jason, who is now grown went away to college but returned and settled in Stockton, too. What is your most cherished memory about your job? The amazing popularity with Italian charms in the early 2000’s. Carats had quite a reputation and long lines during those crazy days. It gave us the opportunity to travel to Italy to work with charm manufacturers to start our own line of charms, build a website, and wholesale charms that we sent all over the world. During this time, Curtis retired from pharmacy and we’ve had the joy of working together for many years. Do you have a best-selling product in the store right now? PANDORA jewelry from Denmark has been our most popular selling line for a decade now. A PANDORA bracelet is a gift that people can contribute

additional charms to over time. Our customers enjoy personalizing their bracelets to remind them of fond memories. With over 600 charms, there’s something for everyone!

Tell us about Chloe! We have always had a shop dog. Chloe, like our jewelry, brings smiles to our customers. She loves her job as greeter. Come in for a visit and she’ll give you lots of kisses. What is one thing you are most proud of? We are proud of opening a franchised PANDORA jewelry store in the Westfield Mall in downtown San Francisco. I have fond memories from my childhood visiting Emporium during Easter and Christmas to take part in holiday festivities. Never would I have dreamed that years later, I would own a store in that very same mall. What’s a quote or mantra you live by? Life is short. Take the trip. Buy the shoes. Eat the cake. What is your dream vacation? I would love to volunteer for a few days at a panda reserve in China. Cuddling with a baby panda would be my idea of a dream vacation. Curtis would love to drive a German sports car on the autobahn. Do you have a favorite brand that you currently carry? Why? We are thrilled about carrying Uno de 50 jewelry line from Madrid. Uno de 50 jewelry is sophisticated, edgy and empowering when accessorizing. Uno de 50 jewelry pieces really make a statement and has a distinctive look. When new collections arrive, we can’t wait for our customers to try them on and fall in love with the look.

Exciting changes are in store for Bud’s Seafood Grille, celebrating its twenty-five year anniversary in Lincoln Center this year, April 1 (Easter Sunday). To celebrate, the restaurant will undergo a complete remodeling of its storefront, expanding to add new tables and windows and a completely re-envisioned entry. This family owned Stockton eatery has been named San Joaquin County’s Best Seafood Restaurant every year since it opened in 1993. Owners Bud and Jeanne Millsap, along with son Matt (who has worked alongside his parents for the past 17 years) continually strive to stay current in terms of decor, enticing new menu options, and an inviting bar area. But one thing will never change: their commitment to providing consistently delicious food to their clientele.

New FROM

Bud’s motto has always been “simple and fresh”. Even before it was trendy, they purchased local and organic produce whenever possible and adhered to sustainable fishing practices for procuring the freshest fish around. They only serve halibut when halibut is in season. Food is prepared daily from scratch including salad dressings and desserts. The restaurant is also happy to accommodate special dietary needs in food preparation. In addition to fresh seafood dishes, Bud's serves up delicious ribeye steaks, chicken marsala,

Dino has been an entrepreneur for 25 years. Of his 18 businesses that he has built from the ground up, 12 have been salons, with POMP Hair Co. being lucky number 12. In order to make a successful and long-lasting business, it is not something that people are able to do with the snap of a finger or wishing on a dandelion. Dino knew that in order to make all of his great visions into a reality, it would take time, and most of all, it would take an extreme amount of hard work and dedication. Not knowing exactly where or how to take his first step, his stepfather Ernie taught him the basic laws of business. Two of the most critical things Ernie mentioned that has never left Dino’s mind to this day is that, “a business is either growing or dying, nothing stays the same”, and “seek your own counsel”.    Dino started out with his first barbershop in Modesto in 1994 offering haircuts for $4.99. He was told by many that, “this is a bad idea” and that “this will never work.” He was not exactly sure if they were right, but he did know that he would work harder and endure more pain than anyone else in the industry ever had. When Clipper Town was created, it marked Dino’s 5th salon in his first three years of trying the field. Clipper Town’s success was able to rid Dino’s previous fears and uncertainties as he learned the true meaning of, “seek your own counsel”, which is that you are the solution to every single thing in your life.    During that time period Dino had an eye opening revelation about the hair business. He now had an astounding partner, Vicki Kirk, someone who is also driven to work LINCOLN CENTER CHRONICLE | MARCH/APRIL 2018

hard and achieve goals. Together, they began to sniff out and explore the possibilities of high end hair salons. What if it could be done better? What if a salon could deliver a New York or LA experience right here in the 209? For years he had heard from stylists and clients alike that they had to leave town for the best experience. He was exhausted of losing stylists to wealthier areas as they searched

for a more lucrative career and greater exposure. Due to this, Dino and Vicki decided to build a salon that would compete directly with the best salons in the country. Their ultimate goals: bring respect to the hair industry by providing higher salaries, care for their staff by offering maternity leave, catered lunches, education, etc., and give clients an amazing experience in a world class environment. They craved to build a salon worthy of nothing but the best hairstylists and clients.   POMP Hair Co. was a company that Dino had been envisioning for years as the “Apple store” of hair salons, and a work environment that would be the “Google” of hair. When opening POMP Hair Co., they strove for nothing but excellence and uniqueness. When visiting POMP Hair Co., from Teresa at the front desk, to the rest of the professionals who all have had access to hundreds of hours of training from world-renowned hair artists, POMP Hair Co. is unalike. The staff has received balayage training from Melania Trump’s stylist, Alen M., vivids training from celebrity stylists, Hair God Zito and Bescene, haircut training covered by POMP Hair Co. for a week long class at Vidal Sassoon Academy, a blonding class from Nicki Minaj’s colorist, Zach Mesquit aka Platinum Perfection, and highlight education from the Kardashians’ colorist, Tracy Cunningham. How many salons in the entire country have this track record for continuous education?   Astonishingly, POMP Hair Co. does not stop there. When it comes to hair shows, they bring all of those stylists in at the same time and have a high profile event, right here at POMP Hair Co. For these events, people have flown in from Canada, the East Coast, LA, and many other places across the United States. Have you ever heard of anyone flying in from across the country for any event in Stockton?    With the enormous aid of social media, POMP Hair Co.’s various accounts have in excess of 160k followers; the word has spread. POMP Hair Co. has clients driving from the bay area to Stockton just for hair services. Stylists themselves have left the Bay Area and Sacramento to come work in Stockton because of what POMP Hair Co. has to offer. Dino’s wife, cosmetologist Vicki Kirk, runs the daily activity at the salon and does an amazing job at ensuring each client has an experience that could not compare to another.    Owners Dino and Vicki are very blessed to work with true hair professionals; stylists who do it right every day. Not only are there three former salon owners working at POMP Hair Co., but also, the majority of stylists have over twenty years of experience. They are beyond thankful for their workers, and it is because of each and every one of them who are dedicated to delivering outstanding service that they strive to create the best work environment possible. They will never stop making POMP Hair Co. the best that it can be.

If you were told to guess the profession of a woman who has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and in Business Law with a Minor in English, from the University of Miami, would you guess she is a Professional Fighter? Well, that’s what Chelsea Chandler is…or officially will become after her pro debut March 24th in Salt Lake City Utah where she will enter the Octagon to show the world she has one mission….to be the greatest fighter on earth.    It all started for the St. Mary’s High School alum when she left for vacation with her family one summer during college break to Thailand. It is there that she was introduced to the sport of Muai Thai (a combat sport originated in Thailand comprised of stand up

striking and clinching techniques). Soon, the Summer vacation became her job and she ended up staying in Thailand with her sister, Chasity, a full year to train and fight, gathering an amateur record of 5-1. Not sure if fighting was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life, she left Thailand to return to Miami and finish her college Degree. Chelsea said, “It was then, being away from the adrenalin, the training, the lifestyle…” that she decided to return home to Stockton and start training.   MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, is exactly that. The combination of standup (Muai Thai, Kick Boxing, Boxing, and many other striking disciplines or martial arts) and Ground (Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and the likes), and in order to be the best, and survive, being an expert in all of it is a must.    Chelsea started training with UFC Superstars Nick and Nate Diaz, who she credits as being two of the most inspirational people in her life. Through them she began to learn all components of MMA, including their secrets of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which is now the strongest part of her game. Chelsea was a natural, in fact her potential was so recognizable,

she was given the opportunity to turn Pro and debut in August of 2016. Just before her first fight she got injured and had a terrible neck injury which forced her to take a year off and recover from surgery.   As Chelsea recovered and watched the sky rocketing success of people like Rhonda Rousey, whom she idolized not only for her talents, but what she did for the sport and paving the road for woman, Chelsea knew giving up was not an option. Once she was cleared to fight again after surgery everything changed. With her family’s support, her boyfriend and trainer, Victor Galdon, (who is a blackbelt in Sambo and Diaz cornerman) put a plan together for her comeback. The training went from 5-6 hours a day to 8-9 hours a day. Her diet and eating program became precise. Every single gram of protein or carbohydrates has a purpose. Vegetables and fruits are eaten by the pound, and everything is organic and fresh. To sum this up, Chelsea said it best “This is my life and I’m all in.”
