In Memoriam
Charles Carrell Cadwallader
Chuck grew up in Oakland, California, and attended Oakland Tech High School. He joined the Army and was an 82nd Airborne Division member. He then had a 38-year career in Administration for the Independent Order of the Foresters. He transferred to Toronto, Ontario, but returned to Solano Beach, California after seven years. Chuck liked to travel, read, play cards, pool, and golf. He had a hole-in-one four times! He leaves his wife, Carol Ann, of 56 years, a son, two daughters, and five grandchildren. He loved living in Lincoln Hills.
Johnny Lee Miller
Born in Los Alamitos, John joined the Marines and after had a career in commercial and industrial real estate. He cared deeply about his family and others and enriched their lives with his compassion, humor, and silly antics. He traveled the world and had many adventures. He especially loved Lake Tahoe and the Salmon River. A hard worker, he encouraged others that they could accomplish anything with planning and hard work. After moving here, John enjoyed Pickleball, Water Volleyball, and the RV Group. Besides many friends, John will be missed by his two daughters and the love of his life.
A Veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Ron entered police work after discharge. He worked for the San Jose Police Department in undercover narcotics and as a K-9 officer. He went on to serve in the Sheriff’s Department in Calaveras County and then got a Ph.D in Criminal Justice. He taught law enforcement and criminal justice classes at Delta College in Stockton. His service as a law enforcement officer spanned over fifty years, and he received many commendations and awards. He was predeceased by his wife, Sandy.

Joe was born and raised in Grants Pass, Oregon. He received a BS degree at the University of Oregon. After serving in the Air Force, he had a successful career in insurance accounting and owned several small businesses. Lincoln Hills Foundation
Bingo Supports Association 25th Anniversary
Denise Bowden
On July 18, the Lincoln Hills Foundation and the Association partnered for a special Bingo in the ballroom, with the proceeds going toward the Association’s 25th Anniversary Celebration.
The Association provided Special prizes, and Allison Sertic, Lifestyle Manager, served as Master of Ceremonies. Due to this successful collaboration, the Foundation was very pleased to present Executive Director Kyle Bodyfelt with a check for $2,953.
The Lincoln Hills Foundation is also nearing its 25th anniversary of supporting seniors in our community. In 2002, Del Webb encouraged a group of volunteer residents to form the Lincoln Hills Foundation with the mission to develop programs that meet the evolving needs of our seniors. As
our community ages, the demand for services is rapidly growing in many areas. Food insecurity has become a significant concern for seniors as the cost of living increases, often making nutrition a last priority. As we get more cautious about driving, alternative transportation options such as Dial-a-Ride can be a lifesaver. Respite care needs continue to grow along with the request for support groups, socialization, and counseling. The Foundation is proud to provide grants in these critical areas through the generosity and support of our donors.
We are deeply grateful for the many years of partnership with the Association, and we wish Lincoln Hills a Happy Anniversary as it celebrates its 25th year.
Amateur Radio
We gathered at KS Café for our “Hams and Coffee” chat. We had a great turnout featuring varied conversations and a brief demo from Sal, WC6SAL. Thank you, Mark, KM6HDI, for the sweet treats. Our Monday meetings are well attended and surprise demos make for an informative and fun environment. Dan, KN6DRN showed a YouTube video on antenna and propagation topics. We all learned new concepts. Meetings are held at the South Tower every Monday at 6:30 PM. Our club conducts a weekly radio network at 7:00 PM every Monday on the W6LHR Repeater at 147.030 MHz, 167.9 PL. If you are looking for a way to engage in the community and have an interest in amateur radio, please check out the LHARG.

Ballroom Dance
Our club will be holding a Ballroom Dance Night on October 26. The dance will have a Halloween Theme with costumes, desserts, and games. Plan to attend. October will also provide instruction for the rumba/rhumba. Why are there two spellings for this dance? The rumba originated by Afro-Cuban workers in the poor neighborhoods of Havana, Cuba. The Afro-Cuban style of the dance has a more open approach to sexuality. This version of the dance is spelled “rumba.” In the 1930’s during the era of the big bands and Xavier Cugat, the rumba was introduced to the United States. Rhumba with an “h” is for the American ballroom style, which is a simplified ballroom dance version of the original Cuban rumba. Bird
Birds are on the move now, and before long, we will see a variety of feathered critters passing through the area. The
next outing will be at the Vic Fazio/Yolo Bypass Wildlife area off I-80 between Sacramento and Davis. That is a favorite spot for a variety of ducks and geese, as well as raptors and songbirds. We will depart from the west end of the parking lot by the Fitness Center (OC) at 8:00 AM on Friday, October 25. We expect to be back home in the early afternoon. We meet on the second Monday of the month at P-Hall (KS). Come on by.

Bocce Ball, Mad Hatters
Our club plays bocce on Thursday mornings, and we usually have anywhere from 25 to 45 players each week. All skill levels are welcome. From now until May, we begin at 10:00 AM. Teams of four players are formed on-the-fly each week,
so just show up! It’s fine if you can only come occasionally. The focus is on recreation, not competition. We normally spend about 90 minutes on the courts, but it’s okay to leave early. New, inexperienced, and handicapped residents are always welcome. Don’t know how to play? We’ll guide you. Parking is available at the courts, and it’s a great way to meet people. If Thursday mornings aren’t convenient, there’s another fun drop-in group that plays on Mondays at 9:00 AM. Fall is a wonderful time to stay cozy, read, and, of course, discuss books. We’d love to see you at the next meeting. In October, we will discuss the popular Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. November’s discussion selection, Mastering the Art of French Murder by Colleen Cambridge, will stir together a cozy autumn blend of murder and the culinary arts. Meetings are in the Multipurpose Room (OC) from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on the third Thursday of the month. To receive the club’s monthly email notification, email

Cribbage
Fun, fun, fun. Well, she got her lucky cards and she cruised through her Cribbage play now. Seems she forgot all about the agony she caused the old men now. And with her luck a-blasting, she keeps winning just as fast as she can now! Well, you knew all along that the gang was gettin’ wise to you now! And since we took away your luck, you’ve been thinking that your fun is all through now! But you can play along with me, ‘cause we gotta a lot of cribs to win now! Cultural Dance
What is the Cultural Dance Club, you ask? Well, it’s a collaboration of seven dance groups (Cloggers, Jazz, Bollywood, “Just Dance,” Belly Dance, and two Hula groups) formed by Wendy-Jean Iannico. Rules: each group must be, and is, unique enough not to conflict with any of the other groups; we must have two general meetings a year with by-laws and a board of directors; $5 membership fee. Benefits: our club has secured weekly practice times for each group, which is a great help as we perfect our skills; we have an article in the Compass each month; we can be in the Club Expo and other Lincoln Hills gatherings; and we have a great feeling of comradery and interaction and fun! So – let’s dance!

Cyclists
One of the benefits of being a club member is getting cycling safety tips. Our Safety Coordinator,
Tom Frady, brings the club members helpful information with his “Teachable Moment” articles when he becomes aware of an accident or difficult bicycle situation. Here are a few of the tips given in past “Teachable Moments:” “Look where you want to go, you will naturally ride where you look.” “Follow the leader when passing an obstacle, whatever route the leader takes all riders should follow.” “It is good practice to never be to the right of a car (or golf cart!) turning right. Wait behind the vehicle until it is safe to proceed, even if you, too, are turning right.” See the club’s website for additional information.

“Won’t you come into the garden? I would like my roses to see you.” This is a fitting quote for our General Meeting (October 24, 2:00 PM, KS). Rosarians Charlotte Owendy and Linda Knowles will present “Why We Love Our Roses!” This presentation will cover the basics—roses for our area, pruning, fertilization, watering, and common challenges. In addition, it will feature how roses can

Lavender Friends
Next month, we’ll recap our fabulous Founders Dinner, but this month, we want to talk about our fun trip to Red Hawk Casino. It’s a
nifty program: the casino sends a free bus to take groups and bring them back after five hours there. Nearly two dozen of us boarded our shuttle recently for an afternoon of bowling, playing pool, and, of course, playing slot machines. Then we enjoyed the buffet, which was half-off that day. Lavender Friends is a club for LGBTQ residents and allies. Although we just missed it, October 11 was National Coming Out Day, begun in 1988. Line Dance
Since our social back in August, we have had a number of residents asking how to get started in line dancing. The answer to that question is to take a line dance class. We currently offer 14 classes ranging from Absolute Beginner to Advanced.
All classes are listed in the Compass , which is the official magazine for Lincoln Hills. The Compass is published monthly and is available to residents on the 15 of each month (available at both OC and KS Lodges). So, pick up a Compass magazine and select the class that best fits your needs. Remember that line dancing is fun. Classes provide an opportunity to learn some dance skills, make new friends, and most importantly, have fun!

Need something to do now that summer’s over? Come join us for Chinese Mah Jongg. For those unfamiliar with the game, it’s similar to gin rummy but played with tiles. So, if you’re a resident and are interested in an informal and fun way to start the week, please drop into the Card Room (OC) a few minutes before 9:00 AM on Monday during the setup period. Mixed Media
Our club’s last meeting of this year will be on November 20. Since the Holidays are so busy, we are not having any more art challenges until the new year. Instead, members are encouraged to bring any creative project they have worked on recently to share at the November meeting. Nan Griffin will share an art technique with us that we will use in a Gratitude project that day. The next meeting is on the third Wednesday of the month in the Fine Arts Room (OC) at 1:00 PM. Club dues are $20. The exception will be no meeting in December. We welcome people to come check us out. For more information, contact our President, Chris Fetter.

Movie Lovers
On September 12, our club had a lively discussion about Golden Years and Ghostlight Golden Years was about how retirement affected family and friends and the desires of what to do during
retirement. Ghostlight highlights the effect of a teenage son’s death on his family. The family came to terms with their son’s death by getting involved with a local thespian group performing Romeo and Juliet, which helped them accept their son’s death. On October 10, we discussed A Taste of Things (available on Amazon Prime) and Marguerite’s Theorem (available on YouTube.) If you like to discuss movies, please join us. At our September meeting, members displayed images depicting ‘Peace and Quiet’, and we discussed the photos as a group. The creative talents of our photographers were on full display with so many beautiful images featuring this soothing topic. In October, Tony Hallas will present his excellent astrophotography

Pickleball
More than 150 club members enjoyed the “Golden Years” Mixed Doubles Tournament on September 11-12. Tournament directors Ross and Cindi Underwood coordinated this fun event, which was generously sponsored by our club member, Terrie MacDonald of Intero Real Estate. The term “Golden Years” was coined by Del Webb and his company in 1959. The title pitched retirement as a time for a life of leisure rather than a period of decline. We in the Pickleball Club, are certainly embracing this stage of life playing this fun and healthy

September was a month of choices for our club. Those of us who didn’t want to be far from home headed up to Jackson Rancheria. We enjoyed cooling off in the pool, playing games, golfing, and a spectacular afternoon of wine tasting at Runquist Winery. Those who were ready to explore the Southwest headed to the
Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. The group visited several national parks along the way. Most of the group are still on the road, so we look forward to hearing about their adventures when they return. No matter where the road takes us, we always discover something new. See our website to learn more and join us on the second Thursday of each month at 4:30 PM in the Placer Room (KS). Sports Cars
Trees are changing color, Starbucks is selling Pumpkin-Spice Lattes, and the club continues to roll. On August 27, we took a Surprise Back-Country Ride with Lunch. We like surprises because 28 cars showed up not knowing where we were going. We followed a leader along backroads and Historic Highway 49 and ended up at the Moonraker Brewery in Cameron Park for
Taco Tuesday. On September 12, 20-plus cars headed to the Alamar Marina and Restaurant on the Sacramento River. We took a circuitous route via Camp Far West, Wheatland, and Nicolaus and drove along the Feather River via the Garden Highway. The weather was perfect, and the food was excellent. A Halloween Social dinner and dance is planned for October 25 at the Ballroom (OC).

Woodcarvers
Maybe the thought of woodcarving as a hobby gets cooled when the number of knives, chisels, and gouges are displayed in books and magazines. Certainly, the cost would dampen the enthusiasm of a potential carver if all those tools are needed for success. The reality is that a pocket knife was one of the early carving tools. It still may be preferred, but it is a good starting point. What might be better is a carving knife. At some point, the addition of other carving tools would broaden the scope and style of carving. Woodcarvers meet every Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in the Sierra Room (KS). Please drop in and talk to a
member and admire what’s being carved.

Writers
For decades, our Glen Rose, Texas Mother, used quotes to help her children navigate the Road of Life. Most quotes, like “We don’t own anything, we’re just borrowing it,” made us appreciate life for as long as we breathe. Where Mother used quotes to explain life, 95-year-old Allegra Jostad-Silberstein, poet, dancer and Davis, California’s first Poet Laureate, uses modern dance to breathe life into her poems. It’s beautiful. Some write so realistically; we cry along with the characters. Remember tears at the end of a movie whose last word was, “Shane!” Do your writings take your readers on twisty-turned rides through your imagination? Come to the Writers’ Group from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on the second and fourth Mondays. Listen to members read their masterpieces.

Private Reformer Training
Private training is convenient and efficient. All private training is done by appointment only. When working one-on-one, our trainers will customize a
reformer program to meet your specific goals. Hidden muscular weaknesses or skeletal imbalances cause most injuries. Pilates works to balance the body to bring proper alignment and function. Please contact Danielle Merrill for more information regarding Private Reformer Training and scheduling with one of the reformer instructors.
