By Hodan Dahir Lincoln International High School has different sports. Two weeks ago was the last week of the basketball team. The basketball team encouraged many boys to become healthy and fit. Also, it is a very fun and competitive sport. Lots of boys quit the basketball team because they couldn't get along with people and some of them didn't have good grades. In addition, the boys were not able to come to practice so the coach gave them an option where they either had to come to practice or leave them on the bench while the other boys played the games. Some of them chose to quit the team. When the season was beginning they had about 22 players but at the end of the season they had 7 players left. They were respectful to the coach and were able to play on the basketball team and advocated for themselves. The basketball season ended on March 3rd and so far they won five games. Something the boys improved over the basketball season was shooting. The boys that finished the basketball season showed really hard work and they had good attitude. Chris R. said that, “The boys had a very successful season and they had great experience playing basketball. They also improved greatly with basketball skills and life skills such as staying committed to practice and the team while getting homework done and improving themselves.

Respect For Shared Public Spaces

Speech Team

This school year it seems like Lincoln International students are having some new bad habits that our school didn’t have before. During the school time, some of our students use bad language and have written graffiti on the walls and bathrooms. The most shameful habit is when students throw garbage on the floor, bathrooms, cafeteria, hallways, and classrooms. It has happened several times, and I have seen the school staff telling students to clean up after themselves when they eat lunch or snacks in the cafeteria or in classrooms.

Lincoln started a speech team for the very first time. Trying something new is always challenging. Some students put their best foot forward, and some have quit, but along the way they all learned something new about themselves. I myself was once a part of the school speech team, but I quit because I had many things going on.

The dramatic change is stealing. There has been a lot of stealing going on in our school. School laptops have been stolen and even some teacher’s money was stolen from their classrooms and offices. Also, cell phones have been stolen and no one can find who did it .

We have had 2 speech meets so far at Maple Grove High School and at Bloomington Jefferson High School. Both meets had around 400 people participating. The teachers were proud to see their students stand up and give it their best.

In addition, there are other problems during after school and weekends when other people rent our school space. Two teacher’s cameras have been stolen and some other stuff. The classrooms get messed up too.

Although some students have dropped out, we are looking forward to trying again next year. Speech team is only in its first year, and we are hoping to expand next year to more people and more meets.

This year the members were Saadiyo Hassan, Brook Belachew, and Latifa Rwali. Saadiyo Hassan did poetry and informative speaking. Brook Belachew did poetry.

There are a lot of things going on our school that have to be fixed. I interviewed Mr. Loren, our school counselor I asked him what could we do as school to stop this stealing. He responded, “In order to prevent the stealing of personal items they must be locked in a safe place, teachers must lock their rooms.” So the next time you throw your garbage on the floor, don’t clean up after yourself in the cafeteria, bathroom, or classroom, remember to ask yourself, “Is this how I would want someone to act in my house?”

Students Making News Nuridin Ali tried Mr. Tom’s challenge of trying to memorize the most numbers of pi. If you did not know, pi is a never ending number. Pi represents π, it is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter. π is approximately equal to 3.14. Out of all the students who took on the challenge Nuridin Ali memorized the most numbers. If you see Brook Belachew, be sure to congratulate him. He just found out this weekend that he's one of 250 students from around the country to get a $10,000 CocaCola scholarship. He also gets to be flown to Atlanta soon where he will find out if he is among the chosen 50 that get another $10,000on top of the original money. Please give him a pat on the back for doing a great job. He's also been accepted at St. Cloud State and is waiting to hear back from other schools so the scholarship will be used for sure. Every year some hard working, and successful students take classes at MCTC to prepare themselves for college. They always say it is difficult, challenging, and very different from high school. This year Abdalla Ege, Beka Bekuto, Ramon Campoverde, and Brook Belachew have been a few of our PSEO students. 3

Honor Roll Congratulations to all the hard working students. Learning is hard work and for students who are willing to study, pay attention, show respect, and have a positive attitude it pays off in the end. Don’t waste your time; learn now, it will pay off in the future. LENCHO M. ALI SIRAD ALI BROOK BELACHEW HODAN DAHIR FATHYA IBRAHIM FAREHA S. MOHAMED HAMDA A. Congratulations to Jonathan Ruiz and Hamda Mohamed for March Students of the Month!

Jonathan was chosen for student of the month for his active involvement in student government and academic achievements. He has passed all of his MCA tests! He recently volunteered to do a service learning trip in Kansas City. Jonathan has worked hard in serving student government with school projects: school dances, the library, and school improvement, as well as in communities that need help such as helping out a non-profit museum in Illinois and a farm in Missouri. Jonathon is always willing to give a hand and contribute to his community! Hamda was chosen for the student of the month due to the strides that she has made academically. She has increased in her MAP and reading scores dramatically! She is a very organized student who is ready with assignments. She has superb study skills and is eager to learn new ideas. She is involved in after school activities and placed in the Poetry Out Loud competition. She is a respectful person who demonstrates responsibility every day!
