Annual ’10 Report LINCOLN PARK ZOO

Unveiling a New Urban Ecosystem In transforming the South Pond into Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, we aimed for more than simply creating a green oasis in the heart of the city. While it was essential for people, plants and wildlife to find a refuge here, we were also looking for an idea to take root. In introducing this new urban ecosystem last June, we noted that it should be a model for green space and urban conservation. Nature Boardwalk should exemplify a place where people and nature can coexist, a habitat as suitable for guests as green herons. After a year, we can safely say this model—while still growing— is an unqualified success. Nature Boardwalk’s living shorelines and surrounding prairie have offered a refuge to scores of native wildlife. Visitors have flocked to the site, with programs at the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion inspiring them to examine the wildlife in their own backyard. Zoo scientists have monitored a new ecosystem establishing itself before their eyes. The boardwalk itself offers a perfect bridge between pond and skyline, letting natural and urban elements mingle seamlessly. Nature Boardwalk stands as a modernization of Chicago’s deep green roots, an example we hope will be emulated in cities worldwide. It’s also an anchor for conservation, education and care, reflecting the zoo’s commitments across the globe. The same methods scientists use to monitor the boardwalk are employed to study and conserve wildlife in the Serengeti and Goualougo Triangle. Lessons drawn from the pond infuse key teachings about food webs, ecosystems and adaptations. And much as an encounter with a single dragonfly can bring the pond ecosystem into focus, our amazing animals let visitors connect with wild habitats a world away. Thank you for nurturing this new urban ecosystem with your inspiration and support. As it continues to grow, it will highlight the enduring connection between the zoo, its friends and the city they share.

Special Thanks Countless contributions enabled the creation of Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. We would like to specially thank the following generous donors for their gift of $500,000 or more: Chicago Park District McCormick Foundation Brooks McCormick Trust Peoples Gas The Regenstein Foundation The Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo The Peoples Gas Education Pavilion frames the Chicago skyline, highlighting how Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo connects urban residents to natural wonders.

Animal Care— A Welcome Refuge Stand atop the Lester E. Fisher Bridge that spans the pond at Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, pause a moment and something magical happens. Birds soar into view and splash down in the water, sometimes plunging headfirst in their search for food. The sound of crickets might fill your ears. You might spot a turtle basking on a log or a fish darting through the water below.

The best part is, these animal encounters are happening more frequently every day. Like a young animal at its juvenile stage, Nature Boardwalk is beginning to show signs of maturity. Wildlife abounds at the environment, from painted turtles to black-crowned night herons. But there is still plenty of growth to be done. Director of Horticulture Brian Houck predicts that plant life around the pond will not be fully mature until 2013, meaning the full range of food and shelter for animal species will not be ready until then. And as this region is just a year old, resident animal species still need time to bolster their numbers here. Likewise, new species have yet to find this oasis. Coordinator of Wildlife Management Vicky Hunt predicts that the species list will continue to grow. More natural change for a rapidly greening ecosystem.

found scampering around the yard, testing out his hind legs with impressive, jubilant kicks. A white-cheeked gibbon was born at the Helen Brach Primate House in January 2011. The little one was unquestionably adorable, but its gender remained a mystery for months. (It’s hard to get a peek when the newborn is constantly nestled on mom’s lap.) By April staff had determined that the little one was male, meaning that in time his buff-colored coat will turn black like dad’s. Over at Regenstein Small MammalReptile House, a Hoffman’s two-toed sloth was born in February. The dam proved to be an excellent mother, cradling the newborn on her stomach as she hung upside-down. By May, the little one— gender still undetermined—was slowly beginning to venture away from the safety

of mom to explore on his or her own. In that same building, a fennec fox and giant baboon spider joined the collection this year, while nearby at the Pritzker Family Children’s Zoo, mudpuppies, smooth green snakes and a young Blanding’s turtle were added. A pair of sister Eurasian lynx joined the Kovler Lion House in April of this year. The two look so similar that keepers have a hard time differentiating them. Finally, the bird collection—as usual—was a flurry of activity over the past 12 months. In addition to the aforementioned storks, new arrivals included a red-billed hornbill, nicobar pigeon, sunbittern, laughing kookaburra, bluegray tanagers, Guam Micronesian kingfishers, hamerkop, green woodhoopoes, fairy bluebirds, Bourke’s parrots, kikuyu white-eyes and lesser green broadbills. New rockhopper penguins, common murres and Atlantic puffins enlivened the Blum-Kovler Penguin-Seabird House, while out at the Hope B. McCormick Swan Pond, ruddy ducks, hooded mergansers and northern pintail chicks hatched. Keeping an eye on all these species is Dave Bernier, who in February was promoted to general curator. Dave is a 20year veteran of Lincoln Park Zoo, and his knowledge of this facility and its wild inhabitants is greatly valued.

June arrival Enzi energized the Grevy’s zebra herd at the Antelope & Zebra Area.

Other Highlights Six red wolf pups were born in April 2010, two of which were sent to North Carolina, where they were introduced to a wild pack of wolves. (They marked the 17th pups born at the zoo, six of which have been reintroduced to the wild.) The trio of European white storks hatched in May at the Regenstein Birds of Prey Exhibit grew up fast. Within a few months they were as big as their parents, crowding the nest and gobbling fish and mice to fuel their rapid development. In November, staff began transferring the birds to other accredited zoos. A Grevy’s zebra colt was born at the Antelope & Zebra Area in June. The youngster, bearing stripes more chocolate brown than black, injected youthful energy to the zebra herd. He can be

Conservation & Science— A Living Laboratory Zoo scientists enjoy some splendid vantage points for monitoring wildlife. The plains of the Serengeti. Gombe’s hilly woods. The untouched rain forest of the Goualougo Triangle. But in the past year, one of the most compelling windows into wildlife was Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. Researchers there watched a blank slate become a living ecosystem as native wildlife colonized the new landscape. Better yet, they shared their findings in real time, enabling friends of the zoo to embrace each new sighting.

Pond biologists used radio transmitters to track introduced painted turtles as they explored their new home. They employed camera traps to “catch” gray foxes prowling the pond at night. They dragged nets through the water to census the dragonfly larvae and giant water bug nymphs growing within. And they conducted daily counts to see how blackcrowned night herons—endangered in Illinois—embraced their transformed nesting site. (Very well, it turned out.) By tracking the development of this urban ecosystem, zoo scientists showcased monitoring efforts that are being extended throughout the Chicagoland ecosystem. They also displayed their commitment to conservation across the globe—from the zoo’s backyard to the wilds of Africa. Other Highlights A groundbreaking book by zoo scientists summed up the latest knowledge on chimpanzee cognition. “The Mind of the Chimpanzee” featured contributions from 30 of the world’s leading chimpanzee researchers, detailing findings in tool-use, chimpanzee culture and more. The book originated in Lincoln Park Zoo’s 2007 “The Mind of the Chimpanzee” conference. It was edited by Elizabeth Lonsdorf, Ph.D., director of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, and Steve Ross, Ph.D., the center’s assistant director. In highlighting the cognitive abilities of our closest living relatives, it also underscored the importance of their conservation and care. Another effort to enhance chimpanzee care saw advancements in the

past year. Led by Ross, Project ChimpCARE surveys the living conditions of chimpanzees throughout the United States to develop a plan to ensure sustainable long-term care for this population. Among other successes, the program arranged the transfer of 18 chimpanzees in private ownership to suitable homes in zoos. The zoo also furthered efforts to protect—and better understand—chimpanzees in the wild. The Gombe Ecosystem Health Project continued to study health, interaction and play in the ecosystem made famous by Jane Goodall’s research. Similarly, in the Republic of Congo, scientists with the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project monitored tool-use and the impact of logging on resident chimpanzees and gorillas. Elsewhere in Africa, the Serengeti Health Initiative protected the region’s people, pets and predators by vaccinating domestic dogs against rabies and distemper, preventing the spread of these diseases into the park. Black rhinos in South Africa’s Addo National Elephant Park were beneficiaries of another conservation campaign, with researchers from the Davee Center for Epidemiology and Endocrinology monitoring feces to gauge the endangered species’ health and breeding status. The zoo’s African partnerships were strengthened last April when Tanzanian field technicians visited for conservation training. Iddi Lipende, D.V.M., Juma Baanyiqwa, Imam Mzmbili, D.V.M., and Machunde Bigambo received professional primers on epidemiology, ecology, behavior, pathology and population biology, enhancing their ability in the field.

Closer to home, researchers with the Urban Wildlife Institute continued to develop a monitoring system for Chicagoland wildlife. Camera traps installed along transects from city to suburbs will provide essential wildlife data for urban conservation. Zoo scientists from the Alexander Center for Applied Population Biology are also key partners in local conservation efforts for smooth green snakes and eastern massasauga rattlesnakes. Scientists are studying the factors driving the reptiles’ decline while managing populations—and habitat—for eventual reintroduction. Another partnership is coming to fruition as the zoo-led Zoo Animal Health Network, created with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducts trial runs of its nationwide zoo-based avian influenza surveillance system. Finally, zoo researchers are launching a new collaborative effort with a grant from the AZA Conservation Endowment Fund to study the endangered black-footed ferret—and pilot communityeducation initiatives—at Montana’s Northern Cheyenne Reservation.

Zoo scientists monitored dragonflies and introduced painted turtles to the new urban ecosystem, but they also advanced wild conservation a world away.

Facilities— A New View of Nature One circuit around the namesake path at Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo offers a world-class range of buildings. The classic forms of Carlson Cottage and Café Brauer remind viewers how the area has long served city dwellers looking to embrace nature. The organic shapes of the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion and the boardwalk itself highlight a modern commitment to green spaces designed to serve people and accommodate nature.

These different structures highlight all the goals that went into transforming the deteriorating South Pond into the new Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. This ambitious effort—encompassing a decade of planning, 14 acres of green space and $12 million of support—provides a new model for urban design, one that builds upon the zoo’s existing world of wildlife. How did it turn out? Better than anyone’s expectations. Nature Boardwalk immediately became a must-stroll destination for zoo-goers and a hangout for neighbors, who learned that early mornings were inspirations, afternoon jogs were electrifying and twilight ambles were downright magical at this new space. Professionals from Studio Gang Architects, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Shaw Environmental & Infrastructure, WRD Environmental and Pepper Construction combined their talents to make the zoo’s vision a reality. The deepened pond and re-engineered shorelines provided homes to a spectrum of species, from birds to fish to small mammals. And the structures—those physical elements of this new area—thrilled those who began using them on opening day. Much of the attention centered on the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion. Designed by the award-winning Studio Gang Architects, this building employs a curved wood and fiberglass frame to evoke a turtle’s shell. This natural shape sheltered education programs and yoga participants while providing amateur shutterbugs a great frame for shots of the Chicago skyline. There are other highlights along the walkway. The renovated Lester E. Fisher Bridge features special vertical slats to encourage nesting by native swallows. Michael’s Landing, near the southwest corner, provides an open space for groups to gather and sunbathers to stretch out. The boardwalk itself is a tribute to nature. Every plank is crafted from recycled materials, providing a green path for walkers and an eco-friendly perch for birds looking to rest weary wings. The transformed landscape has already garnered accolades. The Chicago Architecture Foundation named Lincoln Park Zoo and Peoples Gas 2010 Patrons of the Year, and the area earned Mayor Daley’s GreenWorks Award for Sustainable Innovation in a Built Environment. It was welcome recognition for an ambitious vision. Other Highlights We couldn’t look back on the past year without touching on the blizzard that struck Chicago in February. Though the zoo was buried under 2 feet of snow (with banks in some areas that rivaled the height of giraffes) keepers trudged into work to care for the animals, grounds crews did exemplary work digging out paths and engineers worked tirelessly to ensure that the buildings functioned properly. Our security crew also helped rescue a group of motorists that were trapped by the storm—a new twist on the zoo’s longstanding commitment to the community.

Education—An Outdoor Classroom Standing in front of the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion, it’s easy to see how the building reflects the surrounding ecosystem. Curved beams and a turtle-shell inspired roof celebrate the pond, using natural forms to show how people and nature can coexist.

Poised neatly between shore and skyscrapers, the pavilion is a natural classroom. Zoo educators filled the space with learning last summer, offering a range of daily programs to introduce visitors to the new ecosystem around them. “We were able to talk about local animals in a way the zoo didn’t always have the ability to do,” says Manager of Guest Engagement Allison Martin. “We were also able to talk about why the city needs green space— not only for people but also for wildlife.” In “Feathered Friends,” binoculars and sighting scopes inspired beginning birdwatchers to scan the skies. “Exploring the Ecosystem” highlighted the connections of the boardwalk’s new niches, from pond bottom to treetops. “Before and After: A History of Nature Boardwalk” detailed the pond’s transformation, sharing how crumbling paths gave way to natural shorelines. And “Fishy Fun” shared the food web under the surface, informing guests how the feeding habits of fathead minnows, pumpkinseed, bluegill and largemouth bass balance one another to keep the pond healthy. While the pond ecosystem was a focus, guests weren’t only asked to exercise their minds at Nature Boardwalk. The Peoples Gas Education Pavilion also served as an outdoor studio for Yoga at the Zoo. Instructors led adults and parents with babies through a full range of relaxing poses. Participants contemplated the tranquil landscape around them as they stretched, embracing the calm of the new urban oasis. Other Highlights While established favorites such as Bedtime Buddies, Animal Photography and Summer Conservation Camp continued to thrill visitors, exciting new programs offered fresh views of a world of wildlife. Sleep Under the Skyscrapers gave guests the chance to camp out on the South Lawn and experience the zoo after hours. Another program offering an inside view of the zoo was Pathway to Primatology,

which gave participants the chance to step into the lab shoes of great-ape researchers. By meeting with scientists and recording behavioral data with an iPod Touch, attendees gained a firsthand appreciation for how research at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes advances understanding of our closest cousins. Visitors were also able to observe ape minds at work with touch-screen demonstrations at Regenstein Center for African Apes. Tactile computers were presented to the building’s chimpanzees and gorillas during a portion of the animals’ training sessions. By watching the apes sequence objects as they appeared on the screen, visitors gained an appreciation for the complexity of these animals’ behaviors and the connection between science and care. Guest engagement leaders and guest engagement ambassadors continued to draw visitors with daily talks throughout the zoo. In addition to the programs at Nature Boardwalk, educators shared how the zoo is “Saving the Serengeti,” helping “Red Wolves

Howling Back,” and delivering “New Digs for Rhinos,” among other offerings. The Malott Family Zoo Intern Program once again provided an amazing summer experience for 15 Chicago-area teens. The paid interns developed public-speaking and informal-education skills while sharing the zoo’s wildlife with peers. However, the past year saw an ambitious expansion of the program, as third-year intern Jessica Roldan returned as a zoo apprentice. Roldan spent the summer shadowing zoo scientists, gaining a foothold for a future career in conservation by cataloging wildlife at Nature Boardwalk, observing Grevy’s zebras and sorting samples in the zoo endocrinology lab. Zoo educators reached outside the zoo with the first full year of the Young Researchers Collaborative. Eight teachers and 800 students participated in a yearlong program designed to empower students to design and conduct original behavioral research projects. Finally, educators continued to enhance the zoo as a living classroom with new learning materials. Four new installments of the Zoo Tracks self-guided learning modules were produced, including several titles in Spanish. Educators also developed a second curriculum guide: Zoo Links— Early Childhood Learning. New programs at the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion stretched minds—and limbs. Guest engagement ambassadors introduced visitors to the zoo’s world of wildlife.

Events—Introducing an Urban Oasis An enthusiastic crowd gathered June 24 for the opening of Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. Dedicated donors who helped make the new urban ecosystem a reality were on hand with youngsters from Matteson, Illinois’ Sieden Prairie Elementary School, ready to celebrate the pond ecosystem in song. Mayor Richard M. Daley and State Representative Sara Feigenholtz praised this amazing addition to the Chicago landscape. Community neighbors gathered with business and civic leaders to celebrate the city’s newest ecosystem. After a ceremonial release of fish into the water, Lincoln Park Zoo President and CEO Kevin J.Bell led the gathered guests on their first tour of the urban oasis. It was the perfect start for an amazing year of growth and exploration. Other Highlights On April 22, more than 200 students gathered at Café Brauer for the Sixth Annual Science Celebration, hosted by the Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo and sponsored by the University of Phoenix. The day’s festivities continued with Wine and Wildlife: Saving the Serengeti. Zoo collaborator Andy Dobson, Ph.D., provided updates on the Serengeti Health Initiative as Director of Tanzanian Programs Felix Lankester, D.V.M., introduced guests to the Serengeti ecosystem. On June 6, United Run for the Zoo was a sell-out success. With help from United Airlines, Lifeway, Starfruit Café and New Balance Chicago, 4,750 runners tried for their personal best. The zoo’s summer celebrations began June 11 with the Auxiliary Board’s Totally Animal ’80s fundraiser. The party, chaired by Dana Snodgrass and Nicholas Apostal, supported global conservation efforts. More than 10,000 music lovers gathered on the South Lawn for the Jammin’ at the Zoo concert series. Lifehouse, Collective Soul and Guster provided music with support from Mirassou, Bud Light, Pepsi, United Airlines and 101.9 The Mix. The beat lived on with the zoo’s biggest summer gala. Zoo Ball 2010: Rock & Roar

welcomed 1,000 of the city’s leaders to dance to the music—and contribute to the zoo—on July 9. Hosted by the Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo, co-chaired by Peggy White and Kim Theiss and generously supported by J.N. Pritzker/Tawani Foundation/Pritzker Military Library and Sears Holding Corporation, the event raised $820,000 to support zoo educational programs and Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. SuperZooPicnic offered face painting, fun and games, and a preview of Nature Boardwalk to more than 3,000 members in June. United Airlines and Lifeway supported the family fun. The excitement continued October 2–3 with Harvest Days. Families visited the Farm-in-the-Zoo Presented by John Deere for pumpkins, crafts and animal activities. (Whole Foods and Lifeway helped make the harvest a rich one.) On October 25, Spooky Zoo Spectacular, hosted by the Auxiliary Board, drew visitors from throughout the city for a free alternative to trick-or-treating. The zoo welcomed winter with 1 million lights and 275,000 guests at ZooLights Presented by ComEd and Charter One. Members enjoyed complimentary crafts and treats at the Members Lounge. Finally, the zoo saw two milestone birthdays in the past year. Silverback gorilla JoJo celebrated his 30th on April 30 with paper mache presents and cakes. Lincoln Park Zoo legend Dr. Lester E. Fisher’s 90th birthday was honored in February with well wishes from guests and animals at Regenstein Center for African Apes.

Highlights from a year of fun include the unveiling of Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, a summer soundtrack with Jammin’ at the Zoo, elegance at Zoo Ball: Rock & Roar, costumed fun at Spooky Zoo Spectacular and the brillance of ZooLights.
