PROUD PRESENTING SPONSOR OF THE 2012 LINCOLN PARK ZOO BALL

On behalf of the Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo we are delighted to welcome you to the 35th annual Zoo Ball, “The Great Catsby.” We would like to thank all our sponsors and donors who have made leadership gifts that are crucial to our goal of raising more than $1 million for Lincoln Park Zoo. We are profoundly grateful to Guggenheim, which has not only returned this year as our presenting sponsor, but has also underwritten this evening’s dinner in its entirety. Deep appreciation goes to J.N. Pritzker of the Pritzker Military Library and the Tawani Foundation who have generously returned for the 4th year as our Silver Sponsor, as well as to John Alexander who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Grand Patron of tonight’s event. As we gaze around this magnificent setting, our beautiful zoo filled with 1,000 guests, we cannot begin to express our gratitude for the contributions of each member of the 2012 Zoo Ball committee, as well as the tireless zoo staff. Without their time, talent and energy, this evening would not have been possible. Most importantly, we are thankful to you – our guests and supporters. Chicago is a city whose generosity to its cultural treasures is legendary. By attending Zoo Ball, you have demonstrated your commitment to help keep Lincoln Park Zoo free and open to all, 365 days of the year. We hope you enjoy your evening at “The Great Catsby.”

Tonight will be a night to remember at Lincoln Park Zoo – dancing and dining while immersed in the summer elegance of the Hamptons in a unique setting framed by the zoo’s lions and tigers. I expect to hear roars of delight well into the evening. I want to thank all of you for joining me for “The Great Catsby,” this evening’s theme, which acknowledges the beauty of the world’s big cats and invites you to experience a grand time at Zoo Ball with friends who share a love of our wild animals. I also want to personally thank the Women’s Board for organizing Zoo Ball, which continues to be a highlight of Lincoln Park Zoo’s calendar and a favorite of Chicago’s social scene. Proceeds from tonight’s event will help the Women’s Board provide critical support to maintain the zoo as a community treasure. Congratulations to Co-Chairs Susu Meder and Cindy Polayes and the entire Zoo Ball Committee on this great success. I’m also extremely grateful to Guggenheim for serving as Presenting Sponsor of Zoo Ball for the second straight year, and for underwriting this year’s dinner in its entirety. A big thanks also goes to our Silver Sponsor, J.N. Pritzker/Tawani Foundation/Pritzker Military Library. Lincoln Park Zoo is free and open every day thanks to the support of our members, donors and volunteers who make all our accomplishments possible. I know you are as proud as I am when you admire the animal collection at the zoo and when you learn about our conservation projects that span the globe. I hope you will join me in having a memorable time at “The Great Catsby.”

Welcome to Zoo Ball 2012 – The Great Catsby! Thank you for joining us this evening as we celebrate “Gatsby-style” the Chicago treasure that is our very own Lincoln Park Zoo. Congratulations to Susu Meder and Cindy Polayes, two of the most creative and passionate co-chairs this Women’s Board has ever seen. You brought together a wonderful committee of women and succeeded in carrying on the tradition of making Zoo Ball “THE party of the summer.” We extend a big cat thank you to Guggenheim, serving again as our presenting sponsor, and this year generously underwriting this evening’s dinner. And thank you to J.N. Pritzker/Tawani Foundation/Pritzker Military Library, for their continued and kind sponsorship. We extend a special thank you to Barbara Higgins of Allstate and Anne Pramaggiore of ComEd for their valued support. And our gratitude to John Alexander, the Chairman of the Board, for his gracious generosity towards the Women’s Board and to Kevin Bell, President and CEO, and the entire zoo staff for supporting our efforts. Many thanks to all of you, our friends here tonight, for your financial support and enthusiasm. The Women’s Board fundraising initiative these past few years has been Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. Proceeds from tonight’s event will put us near completion of our $2 million pledge and allow us to begin planning for our next capital commitment to the zoo. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as President of the Women’s Board for the past two years. The joy has been in working side by side with each and every one of you to accomplish our goals together, as Ambassadors and Fundraisers. This past year we reached a milestone in our fundraising and individual donations by giving more than $1 million to the zoo. It has been a team effort, and we have had fun along the way.

The Women’s Board of The Lincoln Park Zoological Society

In the 1960s, 12 women pooled their talents in an organization that would become the Women’s Board, which was officially founded in 1976 with a mission to provide funds and service to The Lincoln Park Zoological Society. The zoo, which is open 365 days a year, is the last free major cultural institution in Chicago. Today, the Women’s Board is 140 women strong. This past year was a milestone year with the board giving more than $1 million to the zoo, raised through events and individual giving. The annual Zoo Ball, hosted by the Women’s Board, is the largest fundraising event for the zoo. Through the years, the Women’s Board has donated funds to many projects at the zoo including Nature Boardwalk, the Flamingo Habitat, the Regenstein Center for African Apes, and more. The funds have enhanced the facilities that house the more than 1,100 animals representing a wide variety of endangered species. Lincoln Park Zoo connects an estimated 3 million guests with nature every year through education, conservation, and highest quality animal care. The Women’s Board plays a special role in that outreach. The board annually sponsors the Science Celebration, an education initiative where Chicago-area students showcase their field work and observations, made through the zoo’s education programs. The Women’s Board of

19

The 35th Anniversary of Zoo Ball As we celebrate the 35th anniversary of Zoo Ball, we extend our gratitude to the Women’s Board members of 1977 who began this wonderful fundraising tradition. Below, from the Women’s Board History, is a description of the first Zoo Ball of the Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo. There had been other gatherings that our predecessor, the Women’s Committee, hosted, but this was the first for our Board. The ladies went to work in earnest. The Women’s Board President was Mrs. Patrick G. Ryan (Shirley). The Benefit Committee, chaired by Mrs. Keith K. Stocker (Debbie), met in November. The ball, Zoo La La, was scheduled for July 15, 1977. “Save the date” cards were mailed. The Allan Kaye Band provided the music, George Jewell did a buffet dinner, HDO put up green and white striped tents and Frost Lighting did clusters of lighted balloons on the center poles of the tents. Swan-shaped centerpieces were sold for $10 each. The black tie evening was $75 per couple with a cash bar. There was an advertising benefit book featuring animal pictures with clever comments under each. The evening, attended by 1,118 guests, raised $39,655, which was matched 2-for-1 by the Park District. The funds went toward the planned renovation of the Large Mammal House.

Nature Boardwalk Dragonflies perch on shoreline plants as minnows find shelter among their watery roots. Wood ducks paddle in search of meals next to water striders walking the pond’s surface. Largemouth bass prowl beneath the water while black-crowned night herons soar overhead. Rabbits scrape dens in the prairie grass, and American toads call from unseen homes. These scenes and more are part of the living ecosystem on display at Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. The Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo has been a proud supporter of the transformation of old South Pond into the urban sanctuary that is Nature Boardwalk through its $2 million pledge. The Women’s Board congratulates the zoo on the creation of a world-leading development that showcases the coexistence of natural ecosystems and urban development.
