Where Do I Begin...? Inspirations: UKbride’s Wedding Planning for Beginners guide is designed to take you through your wedding planning step by step. Here, we’ll tell you which services and suppliers to book, when to book them and how to find experts who will really make your wedding day special...

Y

12-18 Months to Go

With 12-18 months to your wedding, it can seem like your wedding is ages away... but it’s important to book highly sought-after suppliers as far in advance as possible...

Y Important Decisions: Now’s the time to make key decisions... hotel or marquee reception, chuch or civil service? These will have a dramatic influence on your budget.

Invest in a box file in which all detailed, receipts, brochures for chosen suppliers and other material can be kept.

Now’s the time to make some pretty fundemental decisions about your big day... the scale, whether you’d prefer a church service or civil ceremony, a hotel or marquee reception and so on. • If you’re hosting a church wedding, book now to assure availability. • Book your Hotel or Marquee now and ask about additional services you’ll need to book... catering, tables and chairs, crockery hire, etc.

Y Setting your Budget: The national average cost of a wedding is £16,000. An easy way to manage your budget is to divide your funds into percentages, working out what aspects of the wedding are important to you. The groom and yourself should list your wedding priorities, a good idea is to choose aspects which you liked and disliked from weddings you’ve been to. You can then arrange who you are going to delegate certain jobs to – arranging this in advance will give everybody plenty of notice. • Set a comfortable budget, allowing a contingency for unexpected costs. • Budget pessimistically - it’s better to allow £18,000 and be £2,000 under budget than to allow £15,000 and be over budget by £1,000!

Y Choosing a Date: Choose which season you’d prefer. Then decide which day of the week... from this ‘rough idea’, you can assess which venues are available, and come up with a definite date for your wedding.

Y Choose your Team: Decide who is going to perform the important roles of Bridesmaids, Best Man, Ushers etc. Pick people who will lighten your workload; you’ll need them to be help rather than a hindrance. The individuals you’ve chosen will be honored you’ve picked them as your nearest and most trusted friends but must also be prepared to put in the time and effort!

Y Book your Honeymoon: Booking the holiday in advance will be easier to do now, rather than leaving it to the last minute. It is also a good idea to book time off work now, to make sure that you won’t be called back into work whilst the two of you are fulfilling your dreams of swimming with sharks in South Africa.

8

UKbride can really help with finding a reception venue. Search on the site, in our Wedding Fairs section as these fairs are often held at local venues.

Seek advice from a travel agency. With your budget and ideal holiday in mind, take your ideas and talk them over with a travel agent. A good agent should be able to produce a number of options that will be tailored to your preferences and your budget.

Y Draft your Guest List: Construct a draft list of the people you want to invite. Doing this now will give you a vague ideas about numbers involved and therefore help with your budget. Knowing this will also help you pick the right venues. It is now that you should decide whether or not you want children to attend the ceremony. Use UKbride to construct your Guest List - the system can then help you plan your tables later on... automating an otherwise time-consuming job!

Y Finalise your Venue: A crucial element of your wedding is deciding whether you’d like a hotel or marquee reception. View Venue Ideas

Hotel-based receptions offer furniture, catering and venue in one easy package, but marquee receptions offer greater flexibility in terms of size and shape of your venue, but often necessitate liaising with other contractors for catering, chair hire, etc.

Y Book your Entertainment: Now is the time to organise your entertainment for the wedding reception, because popular performers are often booked-up 18 months before the wedding. • If you want a DJ or live band you ought to start looking now. Once you have found someone you want, book them as soon as you can to avoid disappointments. However, if you want to make your own playlist you don’t have to think about music for a few months. • Don’t forget to consider a string quartet or classical group to mask the sound of clattering cutlery and conversation whilst you enjoy your wedding breakfast, before booking a livelier pop music oriented band for the evening. • Consider a band that performs covers that appeal to all ages; The Beatles, Beach Boys, Abba and so on are popular with both older and younger guests.

Y

UKbride’s Top Tips...

• When you sign up to our site, our system will automatically work out which services to book and when to book them. • Start using the site’s My Guest List now, it’ll automate your table planning in the future.

10

Y

6-12 Months to Go

By now you’ll have some fairly good ideas how you’d like your big day to be... so now it’s time to turn your attention to the suppliers and finishing touches that’ll really make your day special...

Y Confirm your Guest List: Don’t forget the groom when it comes to choosing your transport... why not hire a supercar to get your groom to the church on time... it’ll look great in your photographs too.

Now, it’s time to confirm the numbers of your wedding. You’ll already have your reception venue booked in, but you’ll need to give your catering contractor or hotel a definitive number of guests. • Use UKbride’s My Guest List function to track your guest list... this will help enormously when planning your table later using our My Table Planner software.

Y Choose a Caterer/Create Your Menus: If you’ve opted for a marquee wedding, you’ll need an external catering contractor, of if your recpetion will take place in a hotel, you’ll need to create or choose from pre-existing menus. • Be aware that your caterer will require a deposit. • The caterer should have some ideas and advice about providing drinks; most will work on a regular basis with such companies. Alternatively, talk to a wine merchant about organising drinks for the wedding reception and glass hire.

Y Decide on your Transport: Once you’ve confirmed your venue and the number of attendants you’ll have, you have the information you need to book your transport. Consider the time of year, and likely climate, and the size and shape of your dress... climbing down from a horse and carriage might prove tricky in a narrow column dress whilst a large ‘A’ line dress with hoop might prove awkward in the back of a modern executive saloon. You’ll find that UKbride’s database of services will yield plenty of local suppliers, and a good choice of different types of transport. • Quirky ideas include companies that hire supercars like Ferraris and Porsches for grooms to reach the church, companies providing helicopter rides to church, and tractors for wedding in the country! • Modern stretched limos provide transport for up to 10 people, not just the bride and groom, making them rather economical, with plenty of room for large dresses.

Y Ring the Changes: Choose and pay for your wedding bands - and commission any engraving or alterations you’d like to be completed.

Y Book your Photographer:

12

Most photographers have to be booked 12 months in advance, especially at busy times of the year so it’s best to start searching early. UKbride has a searchable database of over 3,000 wedding dresses - one you’ve chosen your style, search the site for inspiration

View Photography and Video Ideas. View Venue Ideas.

Organise a trial for your wedding, hair and makeup on the same day as your penultimate wedding dress fitting to see how you’ll look on your big day.

Ask to see a portfolio of potential suppliers’ work to find a photographer who takes the kind of photos you want. • Use UKbride to search for photographers in your area, and view several to assess their style. The terms reportage and traditional are used to distinguish between natural or formal styles of photographs. • Don’t cut costs when it comes to your photographs; enlisting a friend may seem like a real saving, but a family friend with a small digital camera won’t achieve the same results as a professional, and you’ll never have a second chance to capture your wedding. • Consider a videographer too - neither photographers nor videographers can substitute each other, but both in conjunction can capture details and memories of your day that will otherwise be missed forever.

Y Find your Dream Wedding Dress: For most brides shopping for a wedding dress is a pleasure rather than a chore, and the chances are you’ve already chosen the dress of your dreams. If not, now’s the time for find one you love, order it and attend at least two fittings in the run up to your wedding. • ‘A’ line dresses usually feature fitted bodices, flared skirts and, more often than not, trains. Perfect for wider hips and larger bust. • Full skirt or ballerina dresses are ideal for those with slim waists and full busts. Not suitable for petite brides, but highly prized as the traditional Cinderella dress. • Column dresses, fitted, with a straight skirt, are perfect for petite, tall brides. • Empire line dresses have unstructured waists to provide a virtually straight yet unfitted line. Less suited to those with large busts, but ideal for making the bride look taller. • Mermaid dresses are figure hugging with low, flared skirts. Perfect for curvy brides with balanced hip and bust sizes. • Spaghetti strap gowns can minimise large shoulders and are modern and attractive. • Sleeved gowns, including boat and ‘V’ necklines and halter-neck gowns are ideal for brides seeking to cover arms or shoulders, or for winter weddings.

Y

UKbride’s Top Tips...

• UKbride’s huge database of dress images and contact details for local suppliers will prove invaluable. • The site’s Supermarket is ideal for finding favours and other ideas for carry through your chosen theme.

14

To save money on wedding flowers, opt for ‘fillers’ like cheaper gerbera, combined with a few highlight flowers like more expensive roses.

You can save money and personalise your wedding with DIY wedding favours.

3-6 Months to Go With major details now in place and key suppliers confirmed, it’s time to add some style to your big day with last minute finishing touches and details Y Order your Wedding Cake: This is the very latest stage to order your wedding cake - some suppliers need even more notice but most work to a six month turnaround. • If you’d like a traditional tiered wedding cake, consider layers in both fruit and sponge. • Consider practicalities - if you’ve a warm marquee reception rather than a hotel with a dedicated kitchen for a reception venue, it may be too warm for a chocolate cake. • An alternative to a traditional cake is a croquembouche - a mountain of profiteroles or individual cupcakes. • Look out for companies specialising in jelly, cheese and even pork pie wedding cakes! • Budget between 40 and 50 portions from each 12 inch fruit cake.

Y Choose a Florist: View Flower Ideas. View Cake Ideas.

Organise bridal bouquets, bridesmaid bouquets, buttonholes, venue decorations and the table centrepieces. Select one recipient per table to receive your centrepieces as a gift. When you organise an appointment with your florist, take along pictures of flowers you’ve seen, styles of arrangements and swatches of colours and materials. The more information you can give your florist, the better. Also, conduct a little background research to see what flowers are in season when your wedding takes place. Out of season flowers will be available, but will cost considerably more.

Y Add some Finishing Touches: Now is the time to complete your Finishing Touches... favours, table decorations, and bridal accessories. Making favours and invitations yourself is time-consuming but adds a more personal touch, especially if you are artistic.

1-2 Months to Go Ensure that you’ve applied for your Civil Applications or have had your Banns read in church in order to make your ceremony legal.

Double-check your passports are still valid in advance of your honeymoon!

When you’ve less than eight weeks left, it’s time to make final preparations and relax, enjoying the run-up to what will be the happiest day of your life and the fruits of your wedding planning Y Hen Organise Your Hen and Stag Nights: Now is the best time to make sure that the respective parties are being organszed, as it gives you plenty of time to recuperate after the celebration. • Host your events two or three weeks before the actual wedding, and preserve the eve of your wedding for a quieter night in! A hangover, dehydration and tiredness will ruin your enjoyment of your big day. • Look on UKbride for alternatives to boozy nights out - outdoor activities, spa breaks, short breaks abroad or theatre or golf weekends, for example.

Y Apply for your Civil Application or have your Banns read: If you’ve chosen a civil ceremony you have to start making your application now. Legally, in England and Wales, you can apply 16 days ahead of the planned ceremony, but just in case any issues arise, it is better to organise this sooner rather than later because they are valid for 12 months. If you’ve chosen to marry in church, your announcement to marry - or Banns - must be read out in church three times, usually this occurs consecutively. You’ll also need to attend a wedding rehearsal around a month before your wedding. This is held after 6pm, to prevent the ‘ceremony’ being legally binding!

Y Final Fittings: Finally, a month before your wedding, organise a final fitting for your bridal party and the groom’s attendents. This will afford ample time for last minute alterations, and is especially important if you’ve been dieting or working-out in time for your wedding.

1 Week to Go

18

Double check that the groomsmens’ outfits are all present and correct, when they’re collected a day or so before your wedding.

The week before your wedding should prove relaxing and stress-free... never forget your wedding should be something you enjoy and relish, not worry or panic over as the day draws near! Y Prepare for your Honeymoon: If you’ve found preparations for your wedding have slipped slightly, console yourself with the fact that after your wedding planning and the excitement of the big day comes a relaxing holiday! • Have all of the elements you’ll need for the honeymoon organised: eg: foreign currency, passport, suitcases, toiletries etc. • Remember to pack a phrase book or pocket translator.

Plan a quiet night in before your wedding and have a hot bath to help you sleep, avoiding puffy eyes the following morning!

Y Wear your Wedding Shoes in: Your wedding day will necessitate standing up all day in new shoes. Try to wear the shoes your wearing for the wedding around the house. The last thing you want is blisters bubbling-up before you even walk up the aisle, so make sure you take time to walk them in!

Y Chat with your Support Circle: Sit down and talk with the people you will be depending on during your wedding day, particularly youngsters, who are likely to forget if you try to do so any sooner, and will be too excited on the day itself. Be clear with them, explaining exactly what you’re expecting of them. Give the best man a list of final payments that will be due on the wedding day, and then supply any cash or cheques required!

Y Plan a Relaxing Wedding Eve: A night on the town is inadvisable on the evening before your wedding. Instead, opt for a quiet night in and an early night, your wedding day will be ruined by tiredness, a hangover or dehydration... and stag nights the evening before your wedding should definitely be ruled out!

Y

UKbride’s Top Tips...

• As excitement builds, you’ll love chatting on UKbride with other brides getting married on the same day as you... • Prepare to send our ‘Thank You’ notes via the site’s My Guest List system.

UKbride’s Top Tips...

• Upload images of your wedding day for your UKbride friends and family to see... share your big day with others! • Your photographer can use UKbride to proof your photos - albums are password protected, so only family and friends can view them.

Your Wedding Day! For every alcoholic drink you have on your wedding day, have a glass of water too to avoid becoming dehydrated in a hot wedding dress!

Send wedding cake parcels to family and friends who couldn’t attend.

Congratulations! Over two years of wedding planning finally comes to fruition so ensure you’re calm and organised enough to really enjoy the day from start to finish! Y Awake Refreshed and Relaxed: Awaking after plenty of sleep and without a hangover will ensure you’ve the energy to survive a hectic day. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast even if you don’t feel like eating, and leave yourself plenty of time to get ready without rushing.

Y Wedding Day Preparations: Remember gifts for attendents - leave these with parents so that during speeches your bridesmaids and groomsmen can accept your small tokens of thanks. During the day you’ll accumulate wedding gifts of your own, so delegate responsibility of safekeeping and delivery of these to a family member.

Y Finding The Time: Upload images of your wedding to UKbride so family, friends and your online friends can share your big day too!

Be sure to give the photographer all the time he or she needs to capture your big day. It can seem like the photographer is monopolising your time on an important day, but they’re professionals and need the opportunity to do their job properly! Likewise, with so many family and friends, it’s difficult to find the time to spend with your new husband. Try to spend at least some time together enjoying each other’s company and celebrating your wedding together, as well as with friends and family.

Y And finally... Don’t forget to throw the bouquet! Some florists providing a seperate ‘throwing’ bouquet so the bride’s real display isn’t ruined. Traditionally this was accompanied by a garter toss to the gentlemen, with the female bouquet recipient and the male garter recipient enjoying a dance together!

Video is usually the last thing planned for, yet it becomes the first thing you want after your wedding. Nothing brings to life the atmosphere and memories of your special day like a professional wedding film. Organising and preparing for your wedding takes a lot of thought and hard work. Whether it is booking the photographer, deciding what the bridesmaids will be wearing or ordering the flowers, everything needs to be done well in advance. Why then should your wedding video be any different? Your precious memories can be captured on film and choosing your wedding videographer in a timely way should be as important as any other aspect of your wedding arrangements. You need to choose someone you can trust, someone who belongs to a recognised organisation such as the IOV (Institute Of Videography) and with whom you can discuss your exact requirements. They should be able to show you examples of their work so that you can gain an idea of their editing style – for example, the use of music to accompany the film, the style in which the film is shot and the way it is all edited together. Do you want the videographer to film the bride getting ready right the way through to the first dance and beyond or something much shorter? Check that the videographer you choose has appropriate insurance when filming on location, and the licences necessary to use the music that you wish to accompany the film.

In order to get everything that makes your perfect wedding video, you need look no further than Spinning Wheel Productions. Every video that we produce has that personal touch; we like to get to know you before your big day so we can make it possible to relive that most special of days like nothing else.
