Introducing the Agricultural Team at
WRIGHT VIGAR Wright Vigar now has an experienced and dedicated agricultural team. As an accountancy firm based in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Wright Vigar have built up a large portfolio of farming clients of all sizes. Farming is very much a specialist sector and the experience gained over a considerable number of years means that Wright Vigar can offer specialist advice to meet the challenges facing the farming industry today. Wright Vigar can also deal with landed estates and allied trades. Many of the team have farming connections themselves, and this gives them a thorough understanding of the farmer's viewpoint. Considerable links have been also been built up with other agricultural professionals and so you will receive a complete service, whatever your particular needs. Team members are also members of the Chartered Accountants farming group, Tenant Farmers Associates and County Landowners Association. As well as the statutory needs of preparing your accounts and tax, some of the additional areas where Wright Vigar can also help are: • Management accounts. As a commodity price driven business it is vital to be aware of prices and costs, and the effect they have on the business. We will help you to understand the accounts and suggest possible improvements to the process. • Financing. Farming is capital intensive, so it is vital to get the funding right, particularly when dealing with land purchases and sales. • Diversification. This is a vital area to consider, but what are the business and tax implications of potential ventures or new business structures? • Succession issues. How to pass on the business to the next generation in the
most effective and tax advantageous way. • Tax planning. There is always changing tax legislation, but there are also many specialist tax rules which also have to be considered. • VAT. This is an area which can easily be overlooked and yet mistakes can be costly. Meet the team… Richard Vigar Senior Director Richard qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1973 and joined Price Waterhouse Coopers. He then moved back to Lincoln and began dealing extensively with farming clients and related industries. He has built up considerable practical experience in dealing with farming accounts over the last 30 years, and firmly believes in a proactive rather than reactive approach. He is the joint author of the Institute of Chartered Accountant Digest in the Taxation of Farmers in the UK (which ran to three editions.) Neil Roberts - Director Neil joined Wright Vigar in 1991 after a period working for the Ministry of Agriculture. As a general practitioner Neil has extensive experience of working with large and small private and family run businesses. His particular specialisms are in farming, property and construction, offering practical commercial advice and helping clients to interpret financial and taxation issues. With fluctuating farm profits and large capital requirements, planning ahead in agriculture is important. Neil helps his clients to protect cashflow and grow the business by making best use of management accounts, available tax reliefs, capital allowances and farmers averaging claims.
Pete Harrison - Director Pete grew up and worked on an arable farm in Northamptonshire. He joined Wright Vigar in 1994 and qualified in 1998. Throughout his time with the firm Pete has worked with a diverse range of farming and agricultural clients from smallholdings to large estates. He feels that his experience and understanding of the industry enables him to provide bespoke advice to maximise opportunities when working alongside his clients. Chris Roberson - Manager Born into a Nottinghamshire farming family, Chris has worked within rural accounting practice for 25 years gaining a good sound all round accounting and taxation knowledge. Chris joined Wright Vigar in 2007 and is based at the Retford office; Chris deals with a large portfolio of farming and agricultural related businesses and believes firmly in a hands on personal approach working closely with all his clients.

YOU’RE FIRED...! ADVICE FROM CHATTERTONS’ SOLICITORS BUSINESS & EMPLOYMENT SPECIALISTS At Chattertons Solicitors our employment specialists are on hand to provide advice and help on this complex and forever changing area of the law. With eleven offices in nine locations across Lincolnshire, you can make an appointment to see a member of our team at a location conveniently situated to you. HEAD of Chattertons’ Business and Employment department is Peter Lawson, who is a Partner based at the Boston office. Peter became a partner in 1983, having completed his training with the firm. His background has been in general litigation, becoming more specialised in employment work in recent years. Jayne Harrison is a Partner based at the Grantham office. Jayne trained and worked at a leading regional top 100 law firm before coming to work for Chattertons. Jayne has experience of advising and representing small businesses to large plc's on a variety of employment law matters. Sophie Attfield is a Partner based in Lincoln. Sophie has been qualified for 15 years and has specialised in employment law for 13 of those years. She trained in the City of London. Paul Brill is a Partner based at the Newark office. Paul qualified as a solicitor in September 1997 and represented small and medium sized employers in South West London and Surrey before joining Chattertons 2006. Paul has particular experience of the “TUPE” Regulations and their affect on a tendering process.
Employment Tips Jayne Harrison says “Below are a few employment tips that should help any business whatever its size with minimising the risk of a claim by an employee. Tip One Every employer needs to give their employees written particulars of employment within the first eight weeks of employment starting. If you do not think that you have the time or need to do this then think again. An employee can apply to an Employment Tribunal where no particulars have been given and the Employment Tribunal is obliged to award compensation of between 2-4 weeks pay (a weeks pay is currently capped at £380) unless it would be unjust and/or inequitable to do so.
Tip Two It is a common misconception that the written particulars of employment is the same as an employment contract. In fact, they are two different things. So, to ensure that there is no dispute it is best to make clear if you do intend to enter into a contract of employment. Tip Three Employees with less than one year’s service can not necessarily be dismissed for any reason. The normal rule is that in order to qualify to bring an unfair dismissal claim an employee must have been continuously employed for not less than one year. However, just because an employee has less than one year’s continuous employment does not mean that an employer is safe to dismiss without fear of a Tribunal claim. There are a number of exceptions to the normal rule that one year’s continuous service must be shown to claim unfair dismissal. Tip Four It is extremely dangerous just to sack an employee on the spot for misconduct without following any form of procedure. If you fail to follow the ACAS Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievances procedures then a Tribunal could increase any award by up to 25% if you have unreasonably failed to follow the ACAS Code of Practice. Remember... ignorance is no excuse! Tip Five It used to be a fairly common rule that employees dismissed for gross misconduct
would be liable to forfeit any accrued but untaken holiday pay at the effective date of termination. However, this rule became unlawful, in relation to statutory holiday only, upon the introduction of the Working Time Regulations 1998. You should also be aware that unless you have a specific right to make deductions in your contract of employment in relation to employees taking more holiday than they are due on termination of their employment then an employer has no right to recoup those holidays by withholding pay from the employee… And remember if in doubt about an employment issue good quality legal advice taken early can pay dividends later on.”

Surprise Party 2010 represents a ‘season of surprises’ for those on the Elizabethan Burghley House estate in Stamford. For the property’s custodian, Miranda Rock, husband Orlando and the couple’s four children, it’s also three years exactly since their arrival at the property... so this month, we discover what life on the estate is like, and find out about 2010’s programme of family events... Words & Image: Rob Davis.
Both Miranda Rock, custodian of Burghley House, and I distinctly remember our last meeting. It was the very same week that the family moved into their new home following the retirement of Lady Victoria and Simon Leatham in 2007. It was somewhat chaotic, with boxes waiting to be unpacked, and yet, amid the chaos of moving, Miranda herself was still relaxed and really friendly. Three years on, family life in Burghley House’s south wing is certainly more organised and there are fewer boxes, but it’s just as busy and Miranda herself is still as lovely as she this month extends her welcome to visitors to the Burghley estate throughout the summer. With four children aged between 18 months and 10 years of age, Miranda and Orlando have created a season of events designed to appeal to families and enable residents of South Lincolnshire in particular to enjoy Burghley’s 13,000 acres and 5,000 acres of parkland. “Lots has happened in three years, but it has been a smooth transition.” says Miranda. “2010 is the year of the family at Burghley House. We’re launching a children’s version of our new audio tour in May, which lets families enjoy the house at their own pace without being tied to a timetable of tours.” Also this season is a superb concert from ABBA tribute act Björn Again on Saturday June 12th. The event takes place in the parkland surrounding the property, with families invited to bring a picnic and enjoy the supergroup’s best loved hits...
26
it’s expected that over 10,000 music lovers will visit to enjoy the fun! Miranda and family have also created a fortnight of events for families during early August. Having opened the South Gardens for the first time in April for visitors to enjoy a riot of colour from the gardens’ bulbs, August will see the estate’s Festival of Surprises event. This will feature workshops and activities in the Garden of Surprises, with jugglers, face-painters and story telling sessions. “As a mum I recognise how important it is to keep children entertained during the holidays and to spend time as a family. That’s why we’ve created the Festival, and why we’ve made each of the activities free with normal admission charges.” Children will be able to practise circus skills, make Tudor jewellery and make wire animal sculptures as well as enjoying nature walks, treasure hunts and a barbecue in the sculpture garden. Undoubtedly though, Burghley’s most important event is the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, one of the top Rolex Grand Slam equine events
Miranda, as a mum to Matilda, Cosmo,
Jemima and Lila recognises the need to keep children entertained and spend time together as a family in the summer...

alongside Kentucky and Badminton. During this event, Miranda takes on the role of President of the events committee, alongside Chairman Malcolm Wallace and Director Elizabeth Inman.
Also based on the estate are Anthony Beech, furniture conservator, Mike Cowell, picture restorer, Sheila Landi, a textile conservator, and silversmith Barry Witmond. Together with Miranda, who has an MA in Arts Policy and Management, the team is dedicated to maintaining the spectacular property, originally built in the 1550s for William Cecil, Queen Elizabeth’s Lord High Treasurer.
“This is the 49th event, and we hope will see the return of William Fox Pitt and Oliver Townend, last years winner.” says Miranda. “The whole estate is so exciting during the event, The Burghley Horse and we’re delighted that the event Trials brings £20m brings £20m to the local economy of the East Midlands from the 150,000 of tourism revenue visitors it attracts. The Trials supports to the county and is over 400 jobs in the region along with 1000 volunteers who ensure the attended by over smooth running of the event.”
Miranda oversees the estate by way of weekly meetings with the management team, including House Manager Philip Gompertz and Estate Director David Pennell.
Working extremely long hours, managing maintaining and preserving the Elizabethan estate is somewhat of a vocation for Miranda and family. But continuing the work of her mother and grandfather who were themselves very progressive is very much a labour of love.
150,000, making it the largest event in the county...
The population of Stamford is certainly proud of the property, and many local families purchase a season ticket to enjoy the estate all year, from special events to a Sunday afternoon picnic in the grounds.
Maintaining the property and its grounds is certainly a large task, though. The estate employs ten members of staff full time in its forestry and gardening team, eight in the estate office, and has 90 members of staff in total when the estate is open to the public.
“It’s a very intensive job and a responsibility, but also a terrific pleasure.” says Miranda. “A lot has happened in the past three years, and we really hope that the changes we’ve made and the work that the whole teams puts into the estate will ensure the house and gardens can be enjoyed by many for years to come!” n

Park L ife Harmston’s Cedar House is situated in one of the most desirable villages in the county, with an ‘inside story’ that’s quite impressive too…

A little under ten years old. Situated in one of Lincolnshire’s most sought after village. Offering substantial accommodation... and a snip at under £800,000. Harmston’s Cedar House has a great deal going for it, but even more impressive is the inside story… the property boasts stunning decoration and high specification, thanks to its current owners. The house is part of Harmston Park, created in 2000 by Peter Sowerby. The developer is incredibly well-respected in the county and is responsible for some of our most impressive new builds. The 100 properties that make up Harmston Park included four flagship properties of which Cedar House is one. The present owners have been incumbent for over three years, and have upgraded the already impressive specification to include new kitchens and bathrooms with the best quality materials and suppliers, plus new decoration throughout. Born and bred in the county, the current owners have previously completed several developments, and are in the property industry themselves.

The property has been completely renovated by the current vendors with new kitchen, new bathrooms and substantial home cinema room with bespoke soft furnishings throughout...
Their ‘inside knowledge’ has created an insistence upon quality that first attracted himself to a Peter Sowerby home, and has been maintained throughout the changes the family has made too. “It’s a great house, a real family property.” He says. “The village location is a plus and there’s a strong sense of community here, but the house is well-situated close to Lincoln too.” The property originally featured a swimming pool, but with the arrival of two young children, was deemed unsafe and removed and create a huge 13m2 x 9.5m2 cinema room, which is easily the property’s flagship feature. Lincoln’s Sevenoaks Sound and Vision supplied a 102” screen and audio, whilst a large U-shaped sofa was specially imported from the US and the whole room

redecorated with hardwood flooring and an aubergine colour scheme carried through with custom soft furnishings from Shaws of Lincoln. With plant room still present, the next occupant of the property could re-instate the pool, but meanwhile, the room makes a magnificent family room with large informal sofa, superb cinema setup and ample room left over for childrens’ toys. The cinema room is one of five reception rooms in the property, with a substantial hardwood conservatory with bespoke voile dressings a library with bookshelves built by the vendor, and study. There’s also a formal dining room with further bespoke soft furnishings and sitting room with the second of two stone fireplaces
and a chocolate and pistachio colour scheme with Roma fabrics and lighting by Buzz Lighting of Hykeham. Another impressive feature is the bespoke kitchen handcrafted in oak and installed by APSS Joinery. The company created the kitchen, finished in cream Farrow & Ball paint with black granite surfaces, with integrated wine fridge, further American style fridge freezer and butler sink. A separate utility and walk-in larder increases practicality and includes a conventional cooker to supplement the kitchen’s Aga cooker, and kitchen includes a substantial dining table too, rendering it family friendly and practical. On the first floor of the property are six bedrooms with the north-facing master

The location of the property is a real plus - one of the most desirable villages in Lincolnshire - and it was built by renowned developer Peter Sowerby... bedroom boasting the first of two en-suites and a large walk-in dressing room. Bathrooms, meanwhile, are well-appointed with Kohler fittings from Lincolnshire’s Jacksons. Outdoors, the property has been fully landscaped with child-safe features and landscaping that, a decade on, has matured nicely. Totalling nearly 520m2 of space, the house is substantial, but is also conveniently situated just ten minutes from the city of Lincoln. “We love the fact that it’s a safe house for children, with plenty of space and good quality, but also close to the village’s amenities and within just a few minutes reach of Lincoln.” Says the current owner. The location is, indeed, a plus, with Harmston boasting well-respected schools and the family’s local pub, The Thorold Arms. It’s a thriving community that’s absolutely family-friendly with some of the most desirable properties in the villages surrounding Lincoln. Set in three quarters of an acre, the family home offers a wealth of space, but with manageable grounds for families who are otherwise occupied at the weekend, with secure gates, a raised patio area and ample privacy from beech hedging. It’s been the perfect family home but with a new project beckoning, the owners are seeking new custodians to care for what is easily one of the most practical and wellappointed homes close to the city of Lincoln. “We’ll be really sorry to leave the property.” Says the current owner. “We’ve been very happy here and love the property but we’d like to embark on our own project and build a house of our own. We’re still keen to remain in the village though. It’s a great place for families!” n

High Summer... It’s all change for Lincolnshire Pride’s gardening expert as Paul Gray this month leaves Gunby Hall after 34 years to embark on an ambitious new gardening project... This month, plant, prune and enjoy your garden with Paul’s invaluable advice!
Words & Images: Paul Gray and Rob Davis.
In the space of one week I have had a series of minor disasters. Firstly my trusty old mower of over 30 years coughed out its last breath. After the long, cold winter it started with about three pulls and struck manfully into the rapidly growing grass but three parts around the garden it just stopped and no amount of coaxing will get it to go again. Because of its age, very wobbly wheels, the fact it leaks oil and needs a new exhaust I am afraid it is not worth mending. Not long after this event, I was summoned by she who must be obeyed to check out the vacuum cleaner. I was told there had been ‘funny burning smell and alarming noise.’ On investigation I found the drive belt has seized up to the pulley and the motor had burned out. They say these things come in
52
threes and true to this old adage the very laptop I am writing on at the moment set out on a go-slow. It seemed to take minutes to open a program and then random things started happening, cursors disappeared, icons changed and the capacity to connect to the internet just disappeared. The cure entailed many hours of saving things to discs and sticks, often shutting down as all had locked up. I think I have retrieved everything except my address book. Where do address books go when lost in the ether? Anyway after much frustration I now have a fast machine once more. All of these irritations have come at a time when my wife Liz and I face new and exciting challenges in our lives. After 34 years at Gunby, I have decided it is time for a new challenge. These little ‘restore or replace’ events we have faced are the precursor to a project of similar ilk but greater possibilities. I have taken on the challenge of restoring a large garden elsewhere, building a team and all the equipment needed for such. In overcoming trauma with the mower, hoover and computer I believe the scene has been set for further success. Watch this space...!
They say bad luck comes in threes... and with three little dramas dispatched, the scene has been set for a fresh period of good luck, as Paul and Liz this month leave The National Trust’s Gunby Hall to take on a new garden!
Take Five: Jobs for June 1. Dead-head perennial wallflowers and annuals to prolong their flowering season. 2. Administer liquid tomato feed to clematis. 3. Begin perennials from seed and sow directly into the garden. 4. Keep soft fruit wellsupplied with water whilst swelling and ripening. 5. Grow leafy hostas in terracotta pots.

JUNE IN THE GARDEN - IN BRIEF Plant of the Month: Philadelphus (Mock Orange) This marvellous shrub flowers in early June and has amazing fragrance. Ranging from the dwarf 'Manteau d'Hermine' to the much larger ‘Belle Etoile’ or ‘Virginal’ the Mock Orange’s are all highly scented. They respond well to pruning as soon as they have finished flowering. They make new wood over summer to flower next June. They are not too fussy about soil types but do not like very boggy land. They can be propagated from hardwood cuttings taken in July. The larger varieties can grow to 2.5mt x 2.5mt so need plenty of room.
The Kitchen Garden Dig up potatoes and plant second crop salads. Keep soft fruit watered.
Watch Out For... Keep an eye out for pests, particularly on roses and in the kitchen garden.

This month, plant wallflowers, set a second crop of beans and salad crops, and allow wildflower seeds to proliferate throughout your garden... If your garden is not yet a riot of colour following the long winter... be patient! Because of the long cold winter mentioned above, some less hardy plants will have suffered and may look dead. My advice is to try to be patient and give plants a chance...
Full of Beans Set a second crop of runner beans, French beans and broad beans to keep young, fresh beans going all season.
Give Your Plants a Chance Fuchsias, salvias, penstemons and the like will often shoot from under the ground in early June. When green shoots appear cut back all dead material and the plants will rapidly recover, do not attempt to feed until new growth has made around 20cms.
Tiny broad bean pods can be picked when only 5cm long to eat whole for a different tasting vegetable. As you dig new potatoes, break down soil and replant as soon as possible with salad crops to maximise your available soil.
Planting Wallflowers Plant wallflower, sweet william and canterbury bell seed in seedbeds outside. If room permits draw a Once late spring flowering shrubs have finished line across open soil and sow thinly. THE FIVE MINUTE GUIDE TO...
Making Rich Compost
Why Compost? This month sees Compost Awareness Week... not a particularly illustrious date for your diary, but with over 40% of gardeners composting already, government sponsored website Recycle Now is only too keen to point out the benefits to those who haven’t yet discovered the secret to creating free, environmentally friendly and nutrient rich feed. The Benefits Compost is a nutrient-rich food product for your garden and will help improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels, and keep your soil’s PH balance in check while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and it will help buffer soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it!

Where to Start Ideally site your compost bin in a reasonably sunny site on bare soil. If you have to put your compost bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs ensure there’s a layer of paper and twigs or existing compost on the bottom. Have a container available such as a kitchen caddy or old ice cream tub. Fill your kitchen caddy or container with everything from vegetable and fruit peelings to teabags, toilet roll tubes, cereal boxes and eggshells. Take care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish. Empty your kitchen caddy along with your garden waste into your compost bin. A 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost. It takes between nine and twelve months for your compost to become ready for use, so now all you need to do is wait and let nature do the work. Keep on adding greens and browns to top up your compost. Using your Compost Once your compost has turned into a crumbly, dark material, resembling thick, moist soil and gives off an earthy, fresh aroma, you know it’s ready to use. Don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs etc – this is perfectly normal. Use it to enrich borders and vegetable patches, plant up patio containers or feed the lawn. n

TRADITIONAL COTTAGE GARDEN: GOLTHO GARDENS n Colourful and traditional 4 1/2 acre cottage garden, purchased and restored since 1997. n Open throughout June, Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm, £4 entry charge. n A158, 1 mile from Wragby. See www.golthogardens.com or call 01673 857768. FOURTEEN years ago Debbie Hollingworth and her sister Lesley Burton had a vision to turn a derelict house with outbuildings and 4-acres of farmland into what has now become Goltho Gardens, a beautiful haven just off the busy A158. Goltho Gardens is very much a family affair with not only Debbie and Lesley and their families living on site but a recent addition is a converted outbuilding for their parents. 14 Year History Whilst the gardens have been developed over the past 14 years by Debbie, the main house and outbuildings have been lovingly restored and converted by husband Sean. However although relatively new, Goltho Gardens look mature and the individual gardens which provide year round interest are brought together seamlessly by the abundant herbaceous borders and winding paths.
Visitors have something to see at all times of the year but in June they are rewarded by the rose garden filled with the scent of its old fashioned blooms, and a meander through the wildflower meadow, a haven for butterflies and a shady stroll amongst the hazels in the nut walk. Features Debbie’s artistic use of colours, foliage and form are apparent all round the garden but never more so than in the gravel garden adjacent to the plant nursery.
contrasting with another quirky feature found nestling in the shade of the silver birches are two Easter Island type heads! Of course your visit would not be complete without a period of quiet reflection on the bench by the ponds teeming wildlife, young frogs, newts and filled with koi carp and goldfish. Refreshments Whilst Debbie’s expertise is more than apparent in the garden Lesley’s side is the tea shop which provides homemade cakes, lunches baked on the premises and homemade preserves and other gifts to take away.
The garden features Debbie’s artistic use of foliage and form, and the wildflower meadow is a haven for wildlife...!
Many interesting features are apparent as you wander the gardens including an amillary sundial in the pæony garden keeping time as it does in the summer sunshine and
As well as looking after the tea shop Lesley also takes care of the hard working Potager which provides for three families.
Coming up is a craft market and charity open day for the National Garden Scheme on the 30th May and on 24th June an evening stroll through the gardens in aid of the charity ‘Help for Heroes.’ n

EASTON WALLED GARDENS n 12 acres of ‘lost’ gardens restored in 2001. Sweet Pea week: daily 27th June-4th July 11.00-4.00 n Easton, Grantham, Lincs NG33 5AP. 01476 530 063, eastonwalledgardens.co.uk. WHEN you think of a garden in June, what comes to mind...? Easton Walled Garden’s Ursula Cholmeley thinks the essence of summer is summed up by sweet peas, roses, swallows and scones with clotted cream. At the beginning of June the garden definitely has roses, as well as swallows and cream teas, enhanced by a collection of staggering irises.
58
Nearby the tendrils of the sweet peas are twirling around their supports but we will have to wait until later in the month to see them in full flower. June Highlights In the meantime, the first roses, cornflowers, calendula and in the woodland garden, aquilegia or grannies bonnets are flowering. Above the flowers, the swallows are swooping. They are collecting insects rising off the long grass for their young broods. “It wasn’t always like this.” says Ursula. “When we started work late in 2001, the gardens were a wilderness of self-sown sycamore, elder and ragwort.”
These gardens, which had been continuously cultivated for over 400 years, had been abandoned for 50 years. Walls were collapsing and Ursula and her team had a five year window before the gardens would have been past restoring, even now the gardens have a major challenge on their hands to restore the stonework. Summer Gardens
A FUN GARDEN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY:
BURGHLEY’S GARDENS OF SURPRISE n Beautiful Capability Brown landscaped parkland, plus Sculpture Garden with ‘rooms’ and Tudor-inspired Gardens of Surprise with interactive sculptures. n House and garden open 7 days a week throughout the summer from 11am. n Stamford, Lincs, PE9 3JY. 01780 752451, www.burghley.co.uk.
THIS year, June bursts to life with a blaze of colour, a splash of summer fun and more than dash of feel good music at Britain’s greatest Elizabethan house, Burghley.
staged too. For 2010 ‘Process’ features work by over 20 sculptors exploring how sculpture is just one act of making, using techniques such as carving, casting and weaving.
Burghley has long dominated the sweeping approach to the stone town of Stamford and been a hit with visitors for four centuries - whether Elizabethan royalty, locals or tourists from across the globe.
One piece, created by Laura Ellen Bacon who weaves magical spells in wicker, integrates twisting leaning arches into trees to resemble giant wasp nests, leaf galls or cavernous webs.
Garden for Families Today it still packs that ‘wow’ factor – offering a packed family day out with a combined ticket giving access to the House plus two gardens, including firm family favourite the Tudor-inspired Gardens of Surprise. But there’s even more open space for locals and visitors to enjoy.
Orangery In between the two gardens, a café offers a chance for visitors to take a break, grab a bite to eat or enjoy a refreshing drink while the popular Orangery Restaurant - housed in a building that provided space for the Cecil family’s love of horticulture - has a well-deserved reputation for quality food and drink. n
Burghley’s parkland, designed by ’Capability’ Brown in the 18th century, is open all year and is free (except on event days), providing walks and open-air fun all year round - it’s also home to a herd of fallow deer. “It’s worth every minute of cold winter gardening to be surrounded by the profusion of Britain’s finest summer flowers.” says Ursula. The gardens themselves extend to 12 acres. Meadows, a yew tunnel, vegetable garden, cottage garden and pickery (cut flower garden) are available for everybody. For Families To make it easier for parents and more fun for children, Easton offers a wren trail, a swing, balls for playing with, a turf maze and bird-hide. The children, hopefully, then enjoy the gardens with their parents as they move from one activity to the next. “All the work that we have done to the gardens has attracted national attention.” says Ursula. “We’re currently filming a one hour programme for Channel 4 about the developments at Easton.” Over 13,000 people visited last year and there are lots of new developments to see, making a visit to see what’s going on at one of Lincolnshire’s oldest gardens a must this month. n
Surprises For a splash of summer fun try the Gardens of Surprise; youngsters delight in getting wet amidst the 32 water features of the Tudor-inspired ‘trick’ garden, while the grown-ups take time out before immersing themselves in the stunning history and architecture of the imposing house and its huge collection of treasures. Hidden by a traditional hedge, fun and history combine in the garden, which opened in 2007, and among surprises are the moss house, swiveling Caesar busts, basins of water, jets and the mirrored maze. Sculpture Garden Offering a different experience, discover contemporary sculpture in an historic setting in the Sculpture Garden, a mix of open space and trees with shrubs creating natural archways and ‘rooms’ containing discreetly hidden sculptures. As well as permanent sculptures all the year round, annual special exhibitions are

BARNSDALE
GARDENS n 38 gardens on eight acre site tended by double gold RHS Chelsea show winner Adam Frost, Garden Designer and creator Geoff Hamilton’s son Nick. n Open daily form 9am-7pm. n Exton, Oakham, Rutland LE15 8AH. 01572 813 200 www.barnsdalegardens.co.uk IT MIGHT sound like a bit of a cliché – but there really is something for everyone at Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, at any time of the year. Made famous by BBC Gardener’s World presenter, the late Geoff Hamilton – Barnsdale houses the country’s largest collection of individually designed gardens under one fabulous open-air roof. From the romantic rose garden to the striking Mediterranean garden, there are so many highlights throughout the season – with the summer really bringing these and many of the other gardens into their own. Adam’s personal highlight of the garden is the thought-provoking Reclaimed Garden, having worked on it alongside Geoff as the main feature garden for the 1996 Gardeners’ World Live Exhibition. He has fond memories of trawling around salvage yards with Geoff looking for materials to create the garden as is made almost entirely from second-hand materials, and was rebuilt at Barnsdale for the BBC. n

GRIMSTHORPE CASTLE GARDENS n 3,000 acres of parkland with gardens around castle on four sides, herbaceous borders, fruit garden and rose parterre. n Open from 11am on standard open days. n Grimsthorpe Estate, Bourne, PE10 0LY. 01778 591205, www.grimsthorpe.co.uk. JUNE is a magnificent month at this majestic and historic landscape near Bourne and the effect is stunning. Formal Gardens & Woodland Walk The castle commands a ridge with spectacular views overlooking the park and lake. It is surrounded on all four sides with formal pleasure gardens leading to the more informal wooded areas beyond, with bulbs and wildflowers and woodland walks in the dappled shade of oak and beech. On the east side of the castle, the rose parterre is at its glorious best in June.
For that brief spell in June, peony flowers are picture perfect; catching their subtle fragrance on the breeze is one of the delights of the garden at this time of year. The scooped shaping of the yew hedge allows glimpses over the herbaceous planting to the park and lake in the valley below.

DURING June, the romantic walled and wild gardens at Doddington are especially wonderful. Visitors will enjoy the fabulous Irises, herbaceous borders and lush wild gardens. Gorgeous Irises In late May/early June, the irises offer an amazing display inside the mellow Elizabethan walls of the West Garden with Iris Week from 23rd–31st May. The unusual planting of blocks of bearded irises inside box-edged parterres produces a fantastic tapestry-like effect that was featured in BBC Gardeners’ World. The fascinating handkerchief tree also flowers around this time. Created in the 1960s to a design based on the Saltire and the Union Flag, it is a working environment with an elegant twist. The soft fruit harvest is in full swing in June, with strawberries, gooseberries and red currants ripe for picking, early potatoes are ready to lift and peas, broad beans and salad leaves are perfect for healthy summer dining. The gardens at Grimsthorpe Castle offer the visitor so much in June. If you are interested in the ornamental or the edible, the formal or the informal, if you want to sit and relax, take a gentle stroll or even run around on the lawns, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this beautiful landscape. n
garden and the planting of a wonderful pleached hornbeam hedge. Kitchen Garden In the newly restored Walled Kitchen Garden, June is the month when everything really gets going. New potatoes, globe artichokes, lettuce, spinach, broad-beans, peas, summer cabbages, courgettes and herbs are being grown for Shop and Cafe. Rachel Petheram’s cutting garden grows gorgeous June flowers for her wedding bouquets and arrangements sold in the Shop. Whilst June is certainly one of the highlights, the garden’s history and structure ensure year-round interest. The Elizabethan walls were retained thanks to a passion for antiquarianism by the Georgian inhabitants. These beautiful walls provide a backdrop and structure for the formal gardens; crisp topiary and seasonal displays work within them year-round. n
Designed in 1900 The box-edged parterres and flowerbeds were laid out in 1900 with the help of Kew Gardens and Country Life magazine. The garden was redesigned by current incumbent Claire’s father to include the irises, and herbaceous borders. Roses are also being re-introduced cautiously; Arthur Bell provides wonderful scent and colour throughout the summer. Wild Gardens In the Wild Gardens, June is a romantic month: the turf maze, Temple of the Winds and statues are all softened with lush, fresh greenery. The ancient chestnut trees flower and climbing roses abound. The Wild Gardens have been developed gradually over the years by Claire’s father and his parents before him. The main changes in the last 20 years have included the planting and subsequent naturalisation of native spring flowers such as snowdrops, lent lilies, wood anemones, snakes head fritillaries and so on; the building of the Temple of the Winds plus the creation of the turf maze and the bog

Lorraine is really experiencing the fruits of her labour - and planting more fruit besides... this month, the kitchen gardener discusses irrigation, potatoes, tomatoes... and a broody hen! I can hardly believe it! Despite the terrible location, my asparagus has produced some shoots and I have been able to eat one crop so far! Asparagus - Against All Odds Because these were planted in amongst the weeds and roots alongside the Leylandii I didn’t think the nutrition hungry asparagus stood a chance. But pulling out nettles revealed the shoots just rising above ground.

Mulch-ual Benefit I have mulched ‘soft fruit corner’ with a layer of well rotted pig manure from the heap left under the old apple tree. The manure will feed the bushes and help keep down the weeds as well as help to hold moisture in the soil. Second and early main crop potatoes are already in the ground but it’s still not too late to plant these... and if space is at a premium, you can still grow them in a container on your terrace alongside tomatoes and salads! points around the garden that make it possible to irrigate the crops using ‘recycled’ water. In my previous gardens I have always had water butts, filled by the guttering down pipes from the house. They provided almost all of the water needed. Many of us are now connected to water meters and water is possibly our most valuable resource. Rain water storage is therefore a major priority. Water butts are a great start, but if space is not at a premium or you are lucky enough to build your own house, underground tanks could well be worth considering. Getting the Sack Second early and main crop potatoes are in the ground and I have already seen the shoots above ground. It could be argued that growing potatoes is unnecessary, as they can be bought easily and cheaply by the sack. I am trying to grow as much of my own food as possible and so I had to try.
Within two or three weeks you will see the results of your efforts. Add a pot with carrots and another with radishes, or perhaps a tomato plant and you have a meal ready to pick at your leisure! Hot Tomato June is the month to safely put tomatoes outside. Half of the plants I have raised here at Damson Cottage will go into pots to be grown in the kitchen garden. This year I have chosen a variety called Sungold as I grew it before and really like the sweet flavour of the small yellow fruits. This tomato will grow very well in the garden... another yellow tomato that I am trying for the first time is Golden Sunrise along with San Marzano – plum tomato, Tigerella a striped fruit and Marmande the big, strange shaped tomato!
Lorraine Bellis works from her Alford garden teaching experienced and novice gardeners how to grow their own food...
If space is at a premium, potatoes can be grown in containers on patios they are easy to grow and there is no doubt that freshly picked produce has a taste unlike anything else... with so much going for them, it is worth having a go at growing your own!
Contain Yourself Container growing is a great way to produce food... I love the convenience of being able to move the plants around and use the containers as a decorative addition to the garden. Using containers, it’s still not too late to grow your own salads. Pick your favourite leaves and sow them into pots, if you choose lettuces, put them a semi-shaded spot as too much sun will inhibit the germination of the seeds.
66
Chicken Run We have reinforced the perimeter fencing a lot to ensure the safe keeping of the kitchen garden, the neighbour’s garden from the hens.
Bruce and the girls are now safely contained in the bottom half of the garden, from the gate down to the allotment and so far, all other parts of the garden have been secured.
Bruce has suddenly become very possessive of his hens and as soon as I appear with titbits for them, he goes to great lengths to remind them (and me!) that he is in charge. He calls them around and tries to discourage them from coming to me. Meanwhile, Betty is broody and as I write this, she has been sitting on an egg for two weeks. We’re not convinced that she is really going to hatch the egg, but we have taken the precaution of moving her to a ‘nursery coop’ and run. Who knows, by the time you read this; I could have my first chick! n
Jobs for June Vegetables Keep sowing salad vegetables – keep sowing little and often to ensure a long growing season of fresh salad. Plant out runner beans – to grow up cane or hazel wigwams, now that frosts have hopefully passed. Tomatoes can be planted out in the garden now. Your containers will need feeding every week from now. Sow turnips – this will produce a crop in autumn.
Fruit Water fruit regularly, mulch with organic matter to help keep down weeds and hold in moisture.

New Timber for Lincoln Cathedral! When medieval Church authorities needed timber for the Cathedral, they sent men out into the local greenwood to cut down a few trees. Today things are a little more complicated, but thanks to the generosity of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Lincoln Cathedral will soon be using timbers from a local Wildlife Trust nature reserve, Dole Wood, near Bourne.
What’s On Events, Talks, Workshops...
Perhaps if this wasn’t so unprecedented, such disgraces as the management of the Rural Payment Agency (RPA) might have been avoided. Even five years after its establishment there are numerous examples of its inefficiency with farmer’s grants being held up. A whole new system of mapping of fields has been established with disastrous results. This results in penalties if not corrected by a certain time, which puts great pressure on everyone concerned.
16 oak trees were recently removed to create gaps in the canopy, then donated to the Cathedral to be used as replacement ceiling beams. Others were used as seating and waymarking in Dole Wood.

Growth of all crops on the farm has been good during the period up to the middle of May. Excellent stands of sugar beet have been established with rain showers coming just at the right time to moisten and soften the soil, enabling the small, tender sugar beet plants to emerge. Weed control is now so sophisticated and good that one hardly ever sees a tractor hoe in the field (let alone a man with a hoe). Potato crops were established, in good conditions and now are showing good emergence. One hopes that with the problems farmers had in selling the 2009 crop that careful control of the number of acres planted will be made in the 2010 plantings. It is vital that potatoes are only established on suitable soils with an established market before planting. At the end of March 15.7% more potatoes were still in store than the year before. A late early potato lifting season and less imports would help prolong the selling season of the 2009 crops. One hears of a drought situation in Jersey... which might also help to delay lifting of earlies. Vegetable production in South Lincolnshire proceeds with the usual ups and downs of prices caused by the irregular weather conditions. I get the impression that less field vegetables are being grown and those in the main are grown by large concerns who rent suitable land for their requirements. A high proportion of early spring vegetable crops are now covered by fleece or plastic with the hope of gaining earlier maturity and a higher price. Unfortunately this is not always the case and the extra expense incurred not always results in higher prices. Livestock, and most producers of Milk, Beef, Lamb and Pigs report prices being maintained at 2009’s levels and with food costs slightly down, reasonable returns are being made. However one also sees the pig population increasing and hopes this does not oversupply what is currently a good trade. n

Creating a
Real Buzz...! Meet Simon Croson… he’s Chairman of the Lincolnshire Beekeepers’ Association, Lecture Convenor at the National Honey Show, supplier of honey to a number of National Trust’s gift shops and has won the Sleaford Beekeepers show for the past three years… oh... and is father to around 60,000 bees per hive. Find out what’s creating a buzz in the world of Lincolnshire beekeeping… Words: Rob Davis. Images: Rob Davis & Simon Croson.
At this year’s Lincolnshire Show, you can meet a few of the county’s 450 beekeepers, and so you should… to find out why enthusiasts all over the county are buzzing with excitement at the belated beginning of the productive honey season. Three years ago, a dreadful collapse in bee populations saw many hives lost, additionally in Lincolnshire, flooding wiped out many more. Colony levels have slowly recovered but are still in need of increased interest and new keepers; hence bee ambassadors like Simon Croson, head of Lincolnshire’s Beekeepers’ Association, Lecture Convenor at the National Honey Show, and producer of honey for a number of Lincolnshire National Trust property gift shops. Simon’s day job, however, sees him working as an Officer Engineer at RAF Cranwell, where he keeps a proportion of his total apiary; “The first bees were a 40th birthday present to indulge a long-standing fascination five years ago.” he says.
This year’s long cold winter has delayed the beginning of the season, which usually runs from early April or May to late September. Whilst the winter months see the population of female workers dwindle to about 10,000 and the male drone population diminish completely - leaving keepers like Simon to repair their hives and clean their equipment - summertime is a different matter. In time for the summer months, the queen will lay 2,000–3,000 eggs each day from May. The drones provide vitality to the colony, but are of little use otherwise; it’s the female population of the hive that completes all of the hard work.

CountrysideNews
The drones are good for breeding, but little else...! It’s the females in the 60,000 strong hive that complete all of the hard work. The queen lays 2,000-3,000 eggs, whilst the female workers cool the hive and forage... Predominantly, the 50,000 female worker bees forage, collecting pollen for protein and nectar for nutrients, which is sucked up using their tongue and stored in a honey stomach. These two substances are combined to make ‘bee bread,’ which feeds the 2,000-3,000 young in the hive’s brood box. The bee bread is highly nutritious, which is great for sustaining the young, but only nectar is used when it comes to creating honey. The frames, of which there are usually 50 to a hive on up to five ‘storeys’ in the super-frame, are also filled with honey, but, separated from the brood box by a queen excluder, these contain no eggs. In addition to the foragers, some of the hive’s female workers are employed solely to fan air throughout the hive to maintain heat. Following the evaporation of the water and the sealing up with wax that they produce from their abdomens - manipulated by their mandibles - when water content reaches around 20%, the frames containing this excess honey can have their wax plucked with a uncapping fork and be spun in a spinner to release around 3lb of honey per frame - 30lbs of honey each time; and up to 150lbs of honey per hive per season. The honey is then double filtered using mesh screens and left to settle before being put into jars - some of Simon’s honey is sold in Lincolnshire’s National Trust Properties; the wax that is a byproduct of each harvest is then exchanged with a beekeeping equipment supplier like the very popular Thorns of Wragby, to be used in candles and beeswax furniture polish. Towards the end of the season, the female workers prevent the male drones from
returning to the hive. These drones die out to leave just one queen and 10-15,000 female workers to over winter, and are replaced with the new generation in spring. Each of the workers live for just six weeks in the active season, spending their first three weeks in the hive before venturing out to forage. Of a number of honey bee species, many keepers’ preferred breed is the apis mellifera but the ‘pedigree’ bee of repute remains the Buckfast Strain. Hive populations fell hugely in 2007, and, following the long cold winter of 2010, apiarists are hoping overall yields will not be affected by the later coming of Spring. “Beekeepers on the whole have had a hard time lately, but this has created a lot of interest.” says Simon. “Our local group has had around 20 new members and a younger influx of those interested in beekeeping.” “Lincolnshire Beekeepers are also running two ‘taster days’ on 3rd July at Risehome, where we have a joint apiary, and on 31st July, at Thornes of Wragby, the Premier place for beekeeping supplies and sponsor of the Leslie Thorne Lincolnshire Young Beekeeper Award, which was this year awarded to Georgia Sellars.”

In addition, the Lincolnshire Beekeepers Association will be erecting a temporary ‘viewing’ apiary at the Lincolnshire Show. There will also be demonstrations of honeyspinning and candlemaking for children. “It’s a fascinating but really involved subject.” says Simon. “Honey harvests also vary from year to year.” By way of an example, Borage a popular forage crop for honey bees - is now increasingly being imported rather than grown in the county, this reduction in Borage has affected enormously the County honey yield. A staple part of Lincolnshire bees’ spring diet is oil seed rape, which yields well - 200lbs last year - but presents problems as its high natural sugar content makes it granulate quickly, rendering it difficult to remove from the frame - oil seed rape generally provides set honey, whilst nectar from Lime and Horse chestnut creates runnier honey; the taste and consistency varies from area to
area and from year to year in accordance with the bees’ dietary habits. Awareness of the importance in maintaining bee populations is essential; after all, they help to pollinate our gardens and provide a surplus of honey to enjoy all summer long.
Images: Top Left, by Simon Croson - keen advocate of Olympus cameras!
With around one hour of work per hive per week and £500 sufficient capital to begin an interest in beekeeping, it’s accessible, but an affiliation with a local beekeeping group is essential. Simon for one is delighted that the interest is finally gaining the reputation it deserves as the ultimate interest for those who love in conservation, but advises a good deal of research before pursuing the craft. “Having said that, it’s rewarding and enjoyable.” he says. “It’s also really good to see new and ever-younger people developing an interest, and the support and friendship you’ll receive from local groups like the LBKA makes it all worthwhile!” n

Lincolnshire Show 2010
Show & Tell The Lincolnshire Show has been at the heart of agricultural life in the county for 126 years. Organisers expect 65,000 people this year between the 23rd and 24th June 2010, at the 200 acre Grange-De-Lings site, and over a thousand of the county’s finest animals will be on show, alongside rural and family attractions... This year’s 126th Lincolnshire Show is more than double the size since its infancy as the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society Exhibition. The Society was founded in 1868 with the original mission: ‘to hold an annual exhibition of farming stock, implements etc for the general promotion of agriculture’ to ensure ‘the furtherance, welfare and progress of the agricultural industry.’ The Show has always maintained its charitable principles and dedication to British farming. As a result it has been rewarded with ever increasing numbers and even Royal recognition. In 1988 Princess Anne became President of the Society and last year she opened the award-winning, energy efficient, EPIC conference centre. Located on the Showground site, the EPIC Centre will once again host an exhibition on sustainable living at this year’s show, just one of the many interactive attractions.

The Sports Zone will be full of new games for all the family with competitions running. In the Countryside Ring a mini-jungle will be staged by Woodside Falconry and Wildlife Park. Neil Munby, owner of the Langworth based Wildlife Park, said: “We wanted to create something a bit different this year that would be exciting for the younger visitors.”

“Working as a partnership benefits the business in so many ways...we both have different experiences to draw upon...!”
Corrine and Scott Mill Millcraft Interiors 36-38, 48-50 Queen Street, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire LN8 3EN Tel: 01673 844439 www.millcraft-kitchens.com
Millcraft Interiors is a Kitchen & Bathroom design and installation business run by The Mill Family... that’s Corrine and Scott Mill, and new member of the team Richard Blakey, our future son-in-law. The business was established in March 2003 and since then, it’s grown considerably!
UK hot tub launch in 2001 and therefore the products are close to her heart, whilst Scott loves the hands on day to day side of the business. We intend to keep growing the business and will always focus on the newest designs and latest ranges from the world’s leading manufacturers within our sector.
An Impressive Portfolio Having spent 20 years in the industry working in design and management for Jacuzzi UK and other large companies, we both felt that if we worked as hard for ourselves as we did for other people we would surely be successful... seven years later we are still working hard and the business is going from strength to strength!
A Creative Partnership Working as a partnership benefits the business in many ways. In the beginning we benefitted as a small business as we both have different experiences to draw from and different strengths within the business.
Our ethos is to offer our customers the best possible quality in both branding, design and service... without hurting their pockets! We work with leading brands such as Villeroy & Boch and Siemens.
Scott is more logical and accounting, project management focused whilst Corrine is more marketing, design and creatively lead. As a married couple we work together very well as we are both working for the same goals. We have a lot of respect for each others skill sets and remain professional at work... trying not to take it home with us!
We have just added hot tubs to our product portfolio too - Corrine worked on the Jacuzzi

our two horses... Donald, a 16.2 hands Chestnut, and Tilly a 14.2 section D, though Donald is retired now. I occasionally go to Sheepgate at Leverton to take part in their showing classes and unaffiliated dressage when they fall on a Sunday, with Tilly. We are currently working on elementary dressage which we love and we have a great instructor in Jess Parr of Middle Rasen. Meanwhile, Scott enjoys being out on his motorbike and comes out with me when I am showing, but as Donald is retired he is not riding at the moment... although I am working on that one! Our Golden Rules If I had to give a few words of advice to other businesses in Lincolnshire, they would probably be to the effect that you should never let your business stand still: we are always looking at new products and ways to do things. The minute you stand still, you start going backwards in terms of competition and customer service. The only person that can hold back your business is you, so focus on what you do best and do not copy your competitors; you can spend too much time analysing what other people are doing... I think it’s fair to say that you shouldn’t worry about things you can’t change either. However, when a problem does arise, embrace it... don’t stick your head in the sand. We all learn a lot from our past mistakes and no one is perfect!

David Rogerson Chattertons Solicitors Trentside Business Village, Farndon Road Newark, NG24 4XB Tel: 01636 673 731 www.chattertons.com
As the Head of Chattertons’s Dispute Resolution Department I have a grand title but suffice to say that I lead a team of specialist solicitors and paralegals who help a wide variety of both business and private clients working with a fundamentally simple aim - to resolve disputes. Helping to Avoid Court Cases This can be by way of litigation or various other methods of negotiation and mediation. Chattertons, however, are not limited to specialists in this area. We provide a complete range of Legal Services and Independent Financial Advice across the firm.
every day. Having experienced partners and colleagues to discuss matters with and refer issues to makes the whole firm extremely effective at delivering a first class service.
All the Partners bring something different to the Firm and that helps us all work together for the benefit of the business as a whole. “Working
in partnership with others means bringing something unique to the business...”
We aim to provide an efficient and cost effective service for all our client’s needs. 20 Years of Caring for Customer I have nearly 20 years experience in this business and I have to say that I am learning
Away from Work With two boys under five, relaxing is a bit of a luxury but my wife and I make every effort to find time for ourselves as well. We all love being outside in the garden or visiting new places as long as there is ice cream available for the boys. Having a family puts all the daily stresses and strains into context and shows you what is really important. Our History Chattertons started, over 200 years ago, as a sole practitioner office in Horncastle. The office in Horncastle grew steadily and subsequently merged with another firm in the same town. In the early 1970s the firm expanded into Boston and in 1996 it moved into Sleaford by merging with an existing Sleaford practice. Since then we have expanded steadily across the county of Lincolnshire with further offices in Grantham, Lincoln, Spalding and Stamford and then into Nottinghamshire with our office in Newark. Whilst our plans for the future consist primarily in expanding and improving upon the services we can provide from our existing offices, we also believe we are better placed than most other firms to take advantage of any further opportunities for growth which present themselves whether in towns where we are already represented or elsewhere. Our Golden Rules I think everyone should think before they act. This would avoid the many disputes that end up on my desk... in business I think it’s always a good idea to get some advice from professionals before you act. It’s also important to know what really is important in your life. We all get stressed by such trivial and unimportant things. n

The
Wedding Album Of Tamsin Stuckey & Daniel Ballard
If music be the food of love, this month’s couple, Daniel and Tamsin enjoyed a mouthwatering chanson proposal in Paris for starters, main course of self-composed psalm performed by their friends in Bishop Grosseteste’s University College Choir, and a symphony of crashing waves for dessert on a Mauritius beach during their honeymoon… Images: Aurora Studio, 01673 844519

i
Bride’s Name: Tamsin Stuckey Groom's Name: Mr Daniel Ballard Ceremony held at: Lincoln Cathedral Reception held at: The Lawn, Lincoln Best Man: Craig Stuckey Bridesmaids: Lesley Winstanley, Imogen Gooch and Emily Hunter Bride's Parents: John Stuckey and Chris Stuckey Groom's Parents: Carole Ballard
When/how did you first meet? Bride’s View: We met in my first year of university at Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln, through our love of music. We were both in the choir so we performed at different events together and we quickly became friends. Groom’s View: It was indeed our love of music which established a common ground… at the time, Tamsin also worked in Counterpoint Music in Lincoln, and I often went there on a Saturday to look for music (and, I must confess, to see her!). When in the relationship did he ‘pop the question?’ How did he propose? Just over two years into our relationship, we went on a two week break to Paris. On the second day of the holiday we visited the Eiffel Tower. We travelled to the top of the tower, which was crowded with tourists, so we moved down a level and sat on one of the benches. Slowly, he went down on one knee and took my hand, asking if I would marry him… It was a perfect proposal and of course I said ‘Yes’! What were the first things that you decided on? Having attended several wedding fairs, we decided to ensure the wedding & reception venues and holiday were arranged first. Lincoln Cathedral was an obvious choice for the service. It remains a special building to
120
us as we both graduated there, and Daniel has a part time job there too. For our reception we booked The Lawn, as it’s a fabulous building for parties and has lovely grounds. We knew we wanted the honeymoon to be a once in a lifetime holiday, and after searching through many brochures and on many internet sites, we opted for Mauritius, which seemed a dream destination! Was planning your big day fraught or enjoyable? Did you both contribute ideas with equal enthusiasm? The planning went through stages of being very busy followed by months of relative inactivity! We enjoyed being able to check things off our to-do lists and the anticipation of the big day becoming closer and closer. It definitely helped that we read a few wedding planning magazines, as we knew the things we had to do and when we needed to have them arranged. Any pre-wedding nerves? Bride’s View: I was very calm… especially considering my dress needed a quick fix on the day. Our photographers even commented on just how calm I was as a bride. Groom’s View: Conversely, I became more and more nervous as we approached the wedding – just because I thought I might forget something important; I did actually forget the time of my hair appointment first thing in the morning, but fortunately they managed to fit
3 - Pride JUNE 95_Layout 2 14/05/2010 17:01 Page 121
me in! Once Tamsin walked down the aisle, all the nerves disappeared though! How did it feel to walk down the aisle and take your vows? It felt wonderful, exciting and a bit scary all at the same time to take our vows, as I am not used to being centre of attention. I was pleased we decided to learn our vows off by heart. It felt as though the words would really mean something to us. Who did you choose for attendants and why? Lesley Winstanley served as my Matron of Honour; we have known each other from the age of six and been close friends since, even though she lives in London. My other bridesmaid, Imogen Gooch, was one of my best friends at university. Emily Hunter is my cousin, who was our final attendant, also celebrating her 8th birthday on the day of our wedding! What made you choose your dress, and can you describe it? It took a while to find the right dress, even
though I had an idea of what I wanted. After trying on several dresses, I tried on a dress with red detail – not my first choice, but it just seemed to fit perfectly. My designer, Image Bridal, said it was available with 30 different colours, including Cadbury purple and the choice was thus made! I didn’t want to take the dress off. It had just enough detail on the front and a wow factor at the back, which all our guests loved.
We felt wonderful,
excited and a bit scared, all at the same time, to take our vows... I am not used to being centre of attention!
Did anything funny or particularly memorable happen, highlights of speeches, special things you said to each other etc? Bride’s View: I remember listening to my brother’s best man speech and feeling moved by his words, and by the moment when we had our first dance and surprised everyone with a ballroom routine. Groom’s View: It is really hard to pick one specific thing – the whole day was wonderful! I absolutely loved the music provided by our friends from the Bishop Grossesteste University College Choir – Tamsin and I had put a lot of thought into our choice of hymns

and music and it was lovely to hear them performed so beautifully, particularly the psalm, which I had composed especially for the wedding. Did you have a honeymoon? If so where, and most importantly, did you enjoy it? We went to Mauritius for two weeks which was absolutely perfect; a blend of relaxation and a bit of culture. Many days spent lying on the beach reading and watching the waves crashing on the sand. Our hotel was the Belle Mare Plage; the staff were brilliant and we enjoyed flower petals on the bed every night! Any friends or family you'd like to thank or recognise? Our parents for their love and support, plus Chris Venables for his great friendship to both of us - for his lovely reading too – and to Rachel Knowles for her fabulous solo performance of Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ Anyone you particularly want to recommend? Our photographers, Aurora Studio were excellent from the start of the process to the album. They helped us with tips for the day and translated our special day into a beautiful album of memories. Thank you! The Lawn in Lincoln was also very accommodating as a reception venue. As well as being
122
spacious, they wanted to help us have the type of reception we wanted and gave us access to any rooms and facilities we needed, which made the organisation so much easier! The Charlotte House Hotel was like a private apartment – it was so big, comfortable and contemporary. How are you finding married life? Bride’s View: Married life is just as I imagined. I love the first thought when I wake up in the morning and remember I now have a husband! Groom’s View: It’s great – I can’t think of anything better than spending time with my wife. n
i And finally, do you have any top tips that you can give for future brides? Enjoy every moment and remember it is a day for you and your future husband, so do what the two of you want to do!

A Jolly Tolly The recently refurbished Tollemache Arms in Buckminster near Grantham is this June celebrating its six month anniversary under the new ownership of four foodie friends. Having created the exceptional venue, we explore how Lincolnshire farming has played a central part in the creation of one of the county’s newest and most promising dining rooms... Words & Images: Rob Davis.
“I think I was always destined for a career in the kitchen!” says farmer’s son Matt. His wife and fellow restauranteurs Amanda Wrisdale, and Paul Adams & Matilda Jaine agree. “Matt was raised on good Lincolnshire food, and it’s an ethos that makes him an ideal candidate for a career as a Lincolnshire chef.” says Amanda. It’s certainly true that Matt has an appreciation for locally produced food and an aptitude for running a restaurant, working in the kitchen alongside best friend Paul and with Amanda & Matilda at front of house. The four friends refurbished and reopened Buckminster’s Tollemache Arms in January this year, and are approaching their six month anniversary working together in the gorgeous character pub that they say will once again become the hub of the village.
126
With four friends who each have a
background in hospitality and cooking, Tollemache Arms, Buckminster near Grantham has reopened with great aplomb and innovative dishes...

The restaurant is blossoming with a rustic appeal that has already gained it great credibility in the countryside. Its pretty setting and neutral decor is matched by high quality food and a very welcoming front of house headed up by Amanda and Matilda... “We want to create a friendly venue in which everyone can feel welcome.” says Amanda. “But also one that produces the best food using local ingredients. Matt is the son of a Lincolnshire farmer, so he really appreciates good ingredients, and Paul is a real genius when it comes to being inventive in the kitchen, and he has an uncanny knack of knowing what will work for each market.” Having completed a course at Leith’s School of cookery, and worked under the two-Michelin starred Paul Merrett at The Farm in Fulham, Matt met Amanda in 2003, and the couple met Paul and Matilda in 2005 when working at the illustriously named Chelsea gastropub The Pig’s Ear. Paul worked at four of the city’s gastropub venues, including the Brown Dog which received Michelin’s Bib Gourmand and rave reviews from the Evening Standard. Even AA Gill of the Sunday Times heaped praise on the chef... whilst Matilda whose father is a renowned writer and publisher and once editor of The Good Food Guide, herself excels in providing a warm and welcoming front of house environment. “The building has fantastic character.” says Matilda. “It’s built of local stone, with a slate roof and large garden. It dates back from 1892 and looks stunning now we’ve completed the refurbishment.” Having acquired the property in November 2009, the four restauranteurs have installed a new bar, feature fireplaces and a library full of comfortable chairs and fresh flowers which, in line with their hopes to restore the venue into a gathering place for locals, has already become the meeting place for the local church’s Alpha group and the village’s Mum & Baby Group. In addition to a full refurbishment of the restaurant, the restauranteurs have also created a series of brand new menus to reflect lunchtime dining, à la carte evening dining and the Sunday Lunch market. A choice of between six and eight starters and
128
main courses are joined by four desserts. The two chefs try to create a ‘meaty’ fish dish, a lighter fish dish and dishes of red and white meat, as well as vegetarian options and the odd ‘wild card’ - a slightly more adventurous option to supplement a traditionally Lincolnshire repertoire of Boston Sausages & Mash and Grimsby Haddock & Chips. “We want to host traditional options.” says Paul, “But we’ve found that it’s also good to offer interesting options too - we thought that Maldon rock oysters would be a controversial addition to the menu, but they’ve proved really popular indeed.” Desserts are home made, with warm, gooey Chocolate and Caramel Pots and Home Made Cookies, Welsh Pancakes & Maple Syrup, Rhubarb Brûlée and other ‘comfort food’ favourites. Local suppliers include Boston’s Abbey Parks for vegetables, Stilton Meats and R&P Meats, fish sourced from Scarborough Fair and freshly baked bread from Bread to Order in Grantham. Undoubtedly our favourite addition to the menu is the flagship starter of a Lincolnshire Ploughmans-style platter for two. This includes local cheeses (Cote Hill & Dambuster), chine, home-made pork pie & venison Scotch egg and local chutneys. Well-presented, colourful, and vast, it is superb value and constitutes a great ‘grazing’ option for summer diners, particularly those eating outside. As Pride goes to press the restauranteurs are seeking to reinstate the venue’s beer garden and create a warm and relaxing al fresco dining venue. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s dining room is replete with chunky flagstones, and rustic furnishings, plus a locally made oak bar. Matt’s sister Lucy of LW Interiors is an interior designer and has devoted her not inconsiderable talents to creating an informal, warm, neutral environment with the formerly small and dark venue really opened up. A A Gill remarked that Paul’s food was ‘just... good, not stuffy’ and this pretty much highlights
Previous Page: Lobster with Wash Samphire. Above: Chocolate & Caramel Cup with Home Made Cookies.
3 - Pride JUNE 95_Layout 2 14/05/2010 17:11 Page 129
i the approach that the four restauranteurs have taken in creating the venue that they affectionately refer to as The Tolly; it’s welcoming, inclusive, rustic and charming... just... very very good! Despite being just six months old, it’s a thriving pub that really is becoming the hub of its community. “We’ve had a really successful six months and have loved welcoming diners into the dining room.” says Amanda & Matilda. “The boys are still looking for local suppliers who can offer the quality and choice we’re after, but we’re really pleased with the way the pub has been received so far and can’t wait to welcome people into the dining room this summer for their first taste of the Tolly!” n

RECIPE BY RACHEL GREEN
LINCOLNSHIRE
SAUSAGE AND EGGS
BENEDICT THE PERFECT PRE-LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW BREAKFAST...! Serves 4 8 Good Quality Lincolnshire Pork Sausages 8 Free Range Lincolnshire Eggs 1 tsp White Wine Vinegar 4 English Breakfast Muffins Softened Butter For the hollandaise sauce 4 Free Range Lincolnshire Egg Yolks 2 tbsp Lemon Juice 250g Butter, cut into small dice, chilled Cayenne Pepper Sea Salt & Black Pepper (optional)
A local restauranteur once told Pride that when eager young chefs apply for a job, the dish he always asks them to cook to assess their talent is Eggs Benedict. The New York dish is a test of basic skills; poach an egg, make a hollandaise sauce and ensure all the elements are ready at the same time... yet ensuring everything is perfect is somewhat of an art. This recipe is Rachel Green’s take on Eggs Benedict - and it makes a great breakfast treat just before the Lincolnshire Show! First make the hollandaise sauce. Place the egg yolks and lemon juice in a fairly large bowl and season. Whisk all the ingredients until they have blended together. Place over a pan of just simmering water, making sure that the bowl is not in contact with the water. Whisk in the butter, a few cubes at a time, until the sauce begins to thicken. Continue adding the butter, whisking all the time and adding a splash of water if the hollandaise looks like it is becoming too thick. If the sauce begins to separate, remove from the heat immediately and add a teaspoon of cold water to the mixture.
Once all of the butter has been incorporated season to taste with sea salt and black pepper, if required and lemon juice. Remove from the heat and keep the hollandaise warm. Next, prepare the eggs and sausages. Preheat the grill to a moderate heat and grill the sausages for 10 – 15 minutes. At the same time, poach the eggs in a large saucepan of barely simmering water to which you have added the white wine vinegar. You will have to do this in two batches. Cut the muffins in half and place them in the toaster or under the grill. When the muffins have been lightly toasted, butter and place in the middle of a warmed plate. Remove the sausages from the grill and place on top of each half muffin. Place a poached egg on top of the sausage and finally spoon the warmed hollandaise sauce over the egg, then sprinkle with cayenne pepper. See Rachel Green’s cookery demonstrations in the food tent at this year’s Lincolnshire Show or find out more about the Tealby based chef at www.rachel-green.co.uk.

Head Chef of Eighteen57, Forest Pines, near Brigg How did your career begin? I’m originally from Canada where I first started working in an Italian restaurant as a kitchen porter. I love the rush you get from a busy kitchen and thought the chefs were like rock stars... I wanted to be like them, so I started my apprenticeship, that was 16 years ago. Tell us your food ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’? My food heaven is simple; grilled sirloin steak and home made chunky chips with garlic butter and a drop of Worcestershire sauce. I’m not a big fan of pig’s liver... however it’s cooked!

Tell us about your restaurant? Eighteen57 is a new restaurant within Forest Pines Hotel. Our main focus is on fresh seafood but we do have meat and vegetarian dishes on our menu as well, and we take advantage of our location near the Grimsby fish docks that keep us in steady supply. Since opening our doors we have won various awards including an AA rosette and we are now working on our second so we’ve upped our game. What’s the secret of a great dining experience? When you have good ingredients you’ll have good food, and with a good service team to match, it all falls in to place. Whether you’re looking for a quiet, intimate meal for two or looking to entertain a group, we can accommodate.

Is there life beyond the kitchen? Spare time outside any kitchen is hard to come by... but in the last two years though I’ve become a father twice, so life beyond the kitchen for me is very much family time! Who knows... maybe one day I’ll start to teach cooking and make more of a day job out of it but right now I’m still enjoying that rush the kitchen gives me! n

ABSOLUTELY CHAB-ULOUS! It’s June! That means garden parties, barbecues and balmy afternoons & cool evenings outdoors! Now that the sun has finally decided to appear it’s time to delve into the cellar for a good crisp French white... Ben Straw of Lincoln’s Steep Hill Wines looks no further than Chablis and offers his recommendations of the most absolutely chab-ulous examples of luxurious summer wines here! For such a small region, lying 180km southeast of Paris, the diversity of Chablis, from a single white grape variety, is astounding. By French law, to be called Chablis the wine can only be made from 100% Chardonnay. Not only is the site of the vines absolutely crucial to success, where it is grown affects the price a producer can demand for his wine. Chablis and it’s surrounding villages are split in to very specific regions with price increasing through Petit and Village Chablis to the named Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. At premier cru level the vineyards of Montmains and Montee de Tonnerre lean towards the more mineral and flinty style of Chablis through to the very fruity and approachable Vaillons at the other end of the scale. Then there is the choice of whether a producer should use oak or not. So many factors subtly influence the final outcome of the wine. From the multitude of outstanding Chablis on the market it’s difficult to pick a handful to recommend, but someone has to do it. Enjoy! n
Domaine Jean-Paul Droin Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 2005 - £20.50 The nose is pure, fresh and classically styled. Good volume on the palate with citrus-infused flavours. A persistent and energetic finish.
1
Domaine Jean-Pierre Grossot Chablis 2007 - £13.95 Aromas of lemon, quinine and minerals. Supple and round but with good grip. Flavours of lemon peel, mint and fresh herbs. Offers lovely density for a village wine. Finishes firm-edged, even a bit youthfully austere.
2
Cool, Crisp Chablis, from £12.50£48.50
Domaine de Chantermerle Chablis 1er Cru l’Homme Mort 2006 - £18.95 This approachable premier cru Chablis tastes like a cross between 2005 and 2004. Very fresh sea shell oyster flavour with a quick finish almost sweet and Riesling like. Very fruity - good now and will be great in the future.
3
Domaine Laurence & Denis Race Chablis 2008 – £12.50 This pure village Chablis has wonderful tones of citrus fruit rounded off with a mineral backbone. Mouth-watering acidity, with good poise and balance.
4
Domaine Laurent Tribut Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy 2006 - £19.75 Crisp and clean on the nose. Lots of minerality with good fruit, acidity and balance. Refreshing and easy to drink. Very long and rich in the mouth.
5
Domaine Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru les Clos 2002 - £48.50 Vibrant fruit showing the strength of the vintage. Clean, crisp appley palate and judicious touch of oak with great depth and balanced acidity. One for the cellar will continue to develop until 2012. Chablis at it’s very best. n

MotoringNews
Hope & Glory This month, we reveal why the best-known name in motoring’s iconic portfolio of vehicles remains successful decades on, with 2010’s Land Rover’s of hope and glory hewn from pure off-road capability and on-road luxury... Words: Rob Davis.
With every new improvement made to the phenomenally capable and luxurious Range Rover, it’s increasingly difficult to see how the company can improve its flagship.
Now, though, Land Rover is facing a difficult decision. Albeit through technology and electronics gadgets, rather than raw engineering, the company’s 63 year old Defender is looking decidedly old hat.
2010’s new model introduced heated and cooled, electrically adjustable seats for rear passengers and a sophisticated system offering 360° surround camera system, not to mention a 5.0V8 engine with supercharger.
The company has realised that losing ground to Nissan’s Navara and Toyota’s Hilux means it’ll have to go back to basics and re-invent its icon for the 21st century, and with all its recent efforts concentrated on civilising the off-roader, the prospect of a new model of Defender is an interesting one indeed... as is the LRX concept - a ‘baby’ Range Rover due in 2011.
It seems silly to remark that the vehicle is good value, but undercutting range-topping Mercedes and BMW limos by tens of thousands of pounds despite similar performance and specification and the added benefit of off-road capability has maintained the model’s reputation as one of the world’s most respected vehicles. Yet, at the opposite end of the scale, the company’s Freelander model offers exceptional value and off-road breadth of capability that no model in its class has been able to match since.
With Range Rover’s sales being cannibalised by Range Rover Sport and Discovery, Defender’s sales being cannibalised by Freelander and a raft of competitors snapping at the brand’s heels, we this month examine the brand’s portfolio to see if 2010’s Land Rover models are still as capable as they are luxurious and offer our advice of the best model to suit your needs and budget.
Images: 2010’s Range Rover includes a supercharged 5.0V8 engine and even more luxury for drivers & passengers.

The company’s Defender, at over 60 years old, is a bit of an anachronism next to the capable Freelander, but is still the farmer’s favourite! Defender For the uninitiated, the firm’s Defender is the same model of Land Rover that has been yomping around farmers’ fields for over 60 years. It’s somewhat anachronistic now - the Freelander is more comfortable and offers five-star Euro NCAP safety, whilst the Discovery can seat seven and it’s not a beast to drive on-road like the Defender. The more basic Defender model is also highly configurable, with three wheelbases (90, 110, 130) and features a thoroughly modern and gutsy 2.4 turbo diesel engine. It’s also the only car you can take to pieces in its entirety with just three tools, and despite XS models boasting iPod compatibility, air conditioning, electric windows and heated half-leather seats, more basic models’ interiors can still be pressure-washed out. It’s also a magnificent towing vehicle and with its stripped out load-space or pick-up model able to carry large dirty loads, it’s the best workhorse for your farm, livery yard or estate. With low-range gears, differential and few electronic aids to get in the way, there are few places the Defender won’t go, even if it’s basic in comparison to the Discovery.
Freelander 2 Land Rover’s fortune really changed when it launched the second generation of Freelander. Whilst the original was crude by comparison, Freelander 2 proved capable off-road (the model debuted the company’s new Terrain Response 4x4 system) and offered build quality and equipment equal to premium saloons of the equivalent price, with classleading 4x4 capabilities and a great on-road driving dynamic built in. 2010 Freelanders feature stop-start technology as standard so they’re economical in town, but with coil spring suspension and and a significant weight advantage over its larger brothers, it’s just as good - if not slightly better - on wet grass and fields. In a nutshell, Freelander represents the best compromise between off-road capability, on-road refinement, equipment levels and low purchase and running costs... making the model a real favourite with Lincolnshire drivers.

Land Rover in 2010 Defender The company’s most rugged model, with a 2.4 diesel engine and five body styles with up to seven seats. Commercial, pick-up and crew-cap variants available. Low range gears as standard. Engines: 2.4 diesel. Trim Levels: SWB/LWB. Base, County, XS. Prices: £19,775-£27675.
Discovery 4 Nobody doubts that with seven seats, low-range gears and air suspension, huge ground clearance and massive tyres, Discovery is one of Land Rover’s best, most capable models. What’s curious, however, is that the company insists on making the model more and more luxurious, which cannibalises sales from its Range Rover models. Top flight HSE models boast digital television, fridge, and rear view camera. Priced at just under £50,000, the top model ventures into Range Rover Sport territory, but offers arguably more practicality and is rather more ‘mature’ - the Range Rover Sport suffers terribly from a ‘footballer’s car’ image. For those who need great off-road capability, luxury and on-road prowess, the Discovery offers everything you wish for in a Land Rover and is certainly the company’s best tow car, as recognised in the Caravan Club’s Tow Car Of the Year Award 2010.
Range Rover Shamefully, the Range Rover Sport suffers from unwarranted stigma from those who brand it a ‘lesser Range Rover’... In fact, with a sleeker profile, rapid performance, and Dynamic mode on its Terrain Response system, the road-biased Range Rover is a harder, sharper machine, offering luxury, high levels of specification and off-road prowess when needed... V8 supercharged models offer performance that would worry a dedicated sports car. However, the model still lives in the shadow of its larger sibling. There is just one Range Rover, and 2010’s improved model still feels like a gentleman’s club inside with a dash smothered in hide and comfortable armchairs. With no exaggeration, Range Rover is phenomenal... there’s nothing on the road more luxurious, nothing more capable and nothing that reeks of class, achievement, and good taste like it! n

Lincolnshire’s New High Sheriff The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office in the United Kingdon and is responsible for supporting the judiciary in the county and recognising the work of voluntary and charitable organisations. Taking over from The Lady Sarah McCorquodale as High Sheriff for 2010/2011 is Lincolnshire farmer, University of Lincoln governor and former Lincolnshire Agricultural Society President John Godfrey CBE...
~ Lincolnshire’s scenery is truly spectacular - it’s wonderful to see it changing throughout the year!
~
Were you born and raised in Lincolnshire? I was indeed born in Lincolnshire, just six miles or so from my current home, at Searby. My family business farms across the county from the Wash to the Humber and into the East Riding of Yorkshire. What do you do and what inspires you most about your job? In addition to my role as a farmer I’ve just taken over the role of High Sheriff from The Lady Sarah McCorquodale. She has been quite outstanding. Throughout her year in office she has travelled all over the county supporting constitutional, charity and community events. I suspect she has worked harder in the role of High Sheriff than anyone before her. The High Sheriff of Lincolnshire is appointed by the Queen and their key role is to lend support to the principal organs of the Lincolnshire constitution - the judiciary, the police and other law enforcement agencies, the emergency services, local authorities, the voluntary sector, and all recognised church and faith groups. One of a High Sheriff’s roles is to explain and promote the historic post, which stretches back to 900AD when it required the holder to collect the King’s food tax. During the 11th and 12th centuries a High Sheriff was expected to collect taxes due on Crown lands, to judge court cases, and to raise a ‘hue and cry’ in pursuit of villains in the county. These days the post includes assuring the welfare of High Court judges when they visit the county, offering them welfare and, in a more contemporary vein, supporting and encouraging the charity and voluntary sectors. The High Sheriff attends Royal visits to the County. It is a real honour to be recognised by the county and to be given the opportunity to put something back in this way. Whereabouts in the county do you live? I live in Searby, on one of our farms. The scenery is spectacular and it’s wonderful to see the landscape changing throughout the year! Which is your favourite area of Lincolnshire and why? I really do like the Wolds - gentle undulations and scenery that can’t be beaten. My favourite building, though, is Lincoln Cathedral - it’s absolutely breathtaking! What are your vehemently held likes and dislikes? I really do enjoy the countryside and enjoy walking, tennis and spending time outdoors. Regarding my dislikes, I think pessimists are my biggest annoyance. Name your favourite book, music and film? My current book is probably my favourite... Nemesis by Max Hastings. It’s a stirring account of the last days of the battle for Japan in the 1940s. Musically, I love a stirring opera - Verdi’s Aida for example. Regarding films, I really enjoyed The Sting, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. What will your epitaph read? I hope that it will acknowledge that I contributed to society as much as possible. Finally, tell us something good! In my role as High Sheriff, I see that 95% of young people work hard to look after their family and their communities. We only hear negative news about youth from the media but I think it’s about time we acknowledged the hard work and positive activities in which the majority of them are involved. For more information on the role see www.highsheriffs.com/lincolnshire.
