CHECK
It’s so bracing... Skegness, the flagship resort of Lincolnshire’s East Coast, is a haven for holidaymakers, now featuring a redesigned multimillion pound foreshore area with the Embassy Centre attracting holidaymaker favourites from Ken Dodd and Joe Pasquale to David Essex and even Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown as well as many 60s and 70s bands to ensure a healthy mix of live entertainment whatever your taste. One of Skegness’ greatest assets has to be its enduring capacity to provide a great atmosphere, one of a bustling, happy summertime nature with children of all ages, families and a more mature holidaymaker each able to mix, and share the fantastic beach. Skegness has frequently been commended in the Tidy Britain’s group’s Seaside Award for their efforts to maintain healthy clean beaches. The award will complement regular Blue Flag awards for tidy beaches making the East Coast’s golden sands among the cleanest and most pleasant in Britain. In addition to its beach and myriad of seaside shops, amusement arcades and sellers of traditional seaside fayre from fish & chips and candy floss to waffles & ice creams, there are also dozens of attractions including Natureland, Hardy’s Animal Farm and the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve, or Bottons’ Pleasure Beach, Skegness Stadium and Ingoldmell’s Fantasy Island resort, with its white knuckle rides, markets and live shows for those seeking a less sedate day trip or holiday. The town’s Butlins resort now boasts modernised accommodation, shows and theme weekends for those of all ages and for families, or adults seeking a weekend break from the family. The late Sir Billy Butlin set up the resort in 1936 and this year it is anticipated that over 350,000 people will stay there over the season, with many more visiting for a single day, enjoying the facilities the complex has to offer, including Splash Waterworld, the entertainment provided at Reds and the fun and games always going on in the Skyline pavilion.
More information available from Skegness Tourist Information Centre, Telephone 01754 899887
Jolly Fisherman - 100 years old Now over a century old, Skegness’ most famous icon, the Jolly Fisherman, and the slogan Skegness is So Bracing was originally commissioned by the Great Northern Railway Company in 1908, when the town was attracting 300,000 visitors a year. Drawn by artist John Hassall, who received 12 guineas for the work, it quickly became a huge success, attracting visitors from all over the
country to visit the holiday destination, often via its convenient rail links. It is thought that the slogan was the work of one of the railway’s employees rather than Hassall himself, and though Hassall died in 1948 a poor man of 80 years, he never lost his passion for the town, declaring that “The reality of Skegness has eclipsed all my anticipations.”

Sand Whilst holidays should always be fun, they must also be safe… Peter Cornall, RoSPA Head of Beach Safety, said: “Recent summers’ heatwaves have seen more than 150 people drown both inland and on the UK coast in June, July and August alone, and many people whilst sunbathing fail to keep an eye on their children, leaving them to play independently.” Don’t use inflatables in the sea, keep an eye on young children and investigate the area around which they are playing to check for broken glass and other
Welcome to Lincolnshire’s clean safe beaches! Skegness’ main seafront beach is well regarded and has won Tidy Britain awards for the past 15 years for being clean and safe for families, as well as Blue Flag recommendations for being well staffed throughout the season by trained lifeguards. Similarly, Mablethorpe’s Central Beach is a bustling, safe and equally clean beach that’s perfect for family fun, but whilst popular, both of these areas are just the beginning of Lincolnshire’s coastline. If, you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, it’s worth exploring the Lincolnshire coastline in more depth, after all, a seaside holiday simply isn’t the same without plenty of sun, sea and sand, whether you’re seeking sandcastles and family fun or nature walks and great surfing. For those seeking nature, Theddlethorpe’s coast, between Mablethorpe and Saltfleet, attracts an abundance of wildlife and is perfect for anyone interested in bird watching or nature walks. Likewise, the coastline of the Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve is equally abundant in wildlife with some excellent visitor facilities for an educational visit too. For water sports meanwhile, Sutton on Sea, between Mablethorpe and Chapel St Leonards is reputed for its water quality, and nearby Sandilands is popular with those seeking surfing, with waves that are challenging, whilst still remaining safe. Finally, for secluded romantic nature walks or family rambles, our recommendation is to stop off at Mogg’s Eye, a beach running from the south of Sandilands to Anderby Creek, which has a reputation for being unspoilt and is excellent for dog walking and fishing.

hazards before you choose a spot in which to relax, and you can rest assured that your holiday won’t be spoilt by nasty accidents.
Sea Lincolnshire’s beaches are among the safest and cleanest around the country, but do pay attention to the various flags used to signal danger… The presence of a red flag signals danger, and indicates that you shouldn’t be swimming or surfing in the area. Red flags are frequently used when dangerous rip currents are present. Red and yellow flags, meanwhile, indicate areas frequented swimmers and body board-ers. These are the areas most closely supervised by lifeguards. Finally, chequered flags indicate areas used by surfers, and consequently, swimming should be avoided when chequered flags are displayed.

Splash out this holiday! Swimming fun for everyone! If you’re needing to cool down this summer there’s no better way than a refreshing dip in one of the East Coast’s swimming pools! Here’s our pick of the bunch...
Seaside Donkeys Skegness’ donkeys are among the happiest in the country and love giving rides to children on Skegness’ main beach and on beaches at Ingoldmells and Cleethorpes each summer. Owner John Nuttall ensures that his 60 donkeys have their annual checkup before each season begins and has won the national Best Seaside Donkey award for three years running.
• The Butlins resort at Ingoldmells, just near Skegness, offers a huge indoor waterpark style swimming pool with twisty flumes, sub-tropical climate, bubble pools and water cannons. Day passes to the whole resort are available from £24 for a family ticket covering two adults and two children. Call to check availability on 01754 765567. • Skegness’ Embassy Swimming Pool is available to visitors on Skegness’ Grand
Parade all year round for just £3.25 a session or £2.70 for concessions. Check for availability though, as the centre hosts timetabled visits by schools and other groups. Call 01754 610675. • Cleethorpes’ Leisure Centre also has a 25m swimming pool with sauna, steam room and spa. Splash Happy sessions are family friendly. £3.20 and £2.40 for adults and concessions. Call 01472 323200 for prices and availability. • Finally, the Fairy Dell outside paddling pool in Skegness reopened last year after a £250,000 renovation. Ideal for younger children and toddlers.
The family has had seaside donkeys for over 100 years and work from Easter to September each year.
Suncream Make sure that you return from your holiday looking golden brown, not red raw! Whilst fun in the sun is an essential part of any seaside holiday, ensuring that you’re properly protected from the sun can mean the difference between going home with a healthy tan or looking like an injured lobster! Always buy a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) according to your skin type, and remember that SPF is a measure of protection not length of time. SPF 15 or more is recommended, and will provide 15 times the protection compared to that if you had no sunscreen applied to your skin. Sunscreen should not be used to extend the length of time you can sunbathe.

Rock around the Clock Tower Don’t forget to take home some seaside rock after your holiday! Skegness has plenty of confectioners lining Lumley Road and Grand Parade, all of whom sell delicious novelty confectionery. One company producing traditional seaside rock is Sweet Thoughts. The company is based on Skegness’ Hawthorn Road and still make their products by hand, but have you ever
wondered how the company manages to put the word ‘Skegness’ through the centre? After boiling sugar and glucose to 300ºc in a large copper kettle and cooling to the desired temperature, the mixture is aerated, flavoured and coloured. Letters are then handmade by alternative strips of toffee with the rock itself. The lettering is then batch rolled and pulled into long strings.

Ice cream You don’t have to wander far in Skegness to find ice creams!
A chip off the old block.. .
Some of the best examples in the town come from local producers, including Appleby’s Ices (01507 359002), Dennetts (01790 752573), and a little further down the coast, Skinners of Boston (01205 364998).
For chips on the East Coa st, there’s really only one place to be... Skegness’ High Street, also known locally as Chip Pan Alle y because of its high concentration of ‘chippie s’ and takeaways! Common to many of the chippies is fresh Grim sby fish, chips made from Lincolnshire potatoes or ‘taties’ and, naturally, a good spoonful of mushy pea s!

Appleby’s Ices on the A1031 between Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes has a great coffee shop & restaurant serving hot and cold food. Meanwhile, Dennetts, based at Spilsby, provides ice cream to many of the county’s best restaurants.
...
Cockles and Mussels... and all sorts of other fish! The seaside wouldn’t be the seaside without cockles and mussels, fresh fish and the occasional crabstick. With Grimsby just an hour or so up the road, you’re spoilt for choice for fresh fish on the East Coast, and two of our favourite fishmongers are S W Elkington on the High Street, and the Skegness Shellfish Co on Tower Esplanade.
If you’re after something fishy in Skegness, the world is... quite literally... your oyster...!
Those fishing from the end of Skegness Pier report catching sole, bass, thornbacks and mackeral throughout the summer and whiting and cod later on in the year.

From the switch-on, the town’s seafront is known as the Platinum kilometre because of the illuminations. Last year, TV’s Jane McDonald turned on the lights, following recent years celebrities which have included Antony Cotton and Tupele Dorgu, Coronation Street’s Sean and Kelly, and former Eastenders actor Shane Richie.
The ceremony will be completed by a national celebrity (to be confirmed), and will take place at the Clock Tower at the bottom of Lumley Road & Grand Parade.
