in Medical History? A name very much associated with Immunocal® is Dr. Gustavo Bounous. It was his research program that pioneered the isolation and preparation of the undenatured milk concentrate that helps to sustain normal glutathione levels and ultimately a strong immune system.

Another name that is strongly associated with Immunotec’s cornerstone product is Patricia Kongshavn, M.Sc, Ph.D – Dr. Bounous’ principal collaborator for over 14 years in this important research program. Originally from England, Dr. Patricia Kongshavn is a former professor in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University in Montreal (Canada). Her education includes obtaining an honours degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University. She also holds an M.Sc in physiology and a Ph.D in immunology, both from McGill University in Montreal. In 1974, after completing a post-doctoral fellowship, Dr. Kongshavn pursued an active career in medical research, joining the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. She held appointments in the Departments of physiology and medicine and rose to full professor in 1986.

Throughout her career, Dr. Kongshavn’s main research focused on increasing the basic knowledge of the immune system, host/ parasite interactions as well as the genetic control of natural resistance. She has published over 90 articles in scientific journals and has contributed chapters in a number of books. Dr. Kongshavn has a unique appreciation of the role glutathione plays in our immune response because she was there – during the essential years of research and experimentation that finally led to the groundbreaking discovery surrounding the important role that whey protein plays on raising glutathione levels at the cellular level. This, coupled with her professional background and expertise in immunology, make Dr. Patricia Kongshavn a part of Immunotec history and one whom we regard with high esteem. Thanks to her important work, our knowledge of the human body and the functions associated with optimized health have been forever brought to a new level of understanding.
