I’m Jennifer and an interior designer, I’ve been designing properties since 2018 and this year I am starting the year designing and planning for projects in 2025.

My first feeling of inspirational advice for the New Year is to remember to create a space that reflects who are you, and that you enjoy spending time in. In 2025 the concept of interiors designed for the individual creating personalized spaces that reflect the unique personality, lifestyle and needs of the homeowner.

This year trend moves away from cookie cutter design and mass-market aesthetics, focusing instead on crafting environments that resonate on a personal level.

PAINT Colo URS

Instead of following generic colour trends, I will tailor palettes to evoke emotions and memories specific to the individual. Whether it’s a calming green shades for a nature lover, or vibrant shades of orange inspired by

travel, the goal is to reflect your thoughts and experiences into the spaces.

mU lTI FUNCTI o NA l SPACES

For many of us in 2025 that work from home or have multi uses for a space. A living room might have to adapt into an office space or a bedroom into a welcoming space for staying guests. I often ask the question to my clients ‘how are you going to use this space’ ‘who is going to use this space. This is to get the best use of every part of the home.

S ENTI m ENTA l AND E C l ECTIC Dé Co R

I enjoy spending time with my clients and the time to discuss their mix of heirlooms, travel souvenirs and personal artwork. If I can incorporate that unique sense of style in a new design that considers those items, I feel often it is more challenging to work with existing pieces, but when it works this approach results in a space that feels authentic and layered with meaning rather than just purely styled for aesthetics.

Our Home

B ESP ok E F URNITURE AND A RTISANA l PIECES

Custom made furniture, handcrafted by local artisans or commission specifically for the space, brings a sense of exclusivity. A bespoke piece will add character to the home and I have been working with fantastic network of trades that are experts in their field of joinery, from custom built bars, home offices and bedroom furniture.

kITCHEN ‘T HE HEART o F THE H om E’

In 2025 kitchens will feel like an additional living space within the house rather than a utilitarian place to prepare food in. Designers are spending time considering the space and

introducing custom cabinetry, personalized hardware and bespoke design elements allowing for a space that reflects individual tastes while remaining functional.

my guide to creating a personalized interior space in 2025

1. Understand the Individual’s Needs and lifestyle

Conduct in-depth consultations learn how the space will be used. Are they working from home, entertaining guests often, or seeking a tranquil retreat? Each of these scenarios requires a different design approach.

Our Home

2. Personalized layout and Zoning

Design spaces based on the user’s routine and flow. For example, an open-plan layout might work for someone who loves entertaining, while separate rooms might be better for those who value privacy and quiet.

3. Bespoke Furniture and Custom Elements

Invest in custom furniture tailored to the individual’s preferences for size, material, and function. This could include a custom-built desk for remote work or a built-in bookshelf for an avid reader.

4. Use of Colour and materials Choose

Colour palettes that resonate with the client, Bold, vibrant colours can energize a space, while soft, muted tones create a calming environment.

5. Incorporate sentimental and unique décor

Display personal artefacts, family heirlooms, or travel souvenirs that evoke memories and add emotional depth to the space. Commission custom artwork or include DIY projects that allow the individual to contribute creatively to their environment.

6. Prioritize Comfort and Well-Being

Focus on ergonomics to ensure that furniture supports healthy posture and movement. Optimize natural light and ventilation to promote well-being. Add elements like indoor plants or water features to enhance the connection to nature.

7. Smart Technology Integration Incorporate

Smart home technology that aligns with the individual’s tech-savvies. This can include automated lighting, climate control, or voiceactivated assistants for convenience and customization.

8. Balance Functionality and Aesthetics

While aesthetics are important, ensure the design also prioritizes practicality. Storage solutions, durable finishes, and easy-tomaintain surfaces can make a space both beautiful and functional.

By focusing on these elements, I can design a space that not only meets practical needs but also serves as a true reflection of the individual’s identity and values.

If you have a New year 2025 interior design project you need advising on please do get in touch via the contact details below. All the best Jennifer.

Fresh Flooring Trends to Revive Your Home in 2025

As we step into 2025, it's the perfect time to refresh your home with the latest trends in carpets and flooring. This year, interior design emphasises warmth, natural materials, and sustainable choices, creating inviting and stylish spaces.

Embrace Warmth and Natural Tones

The shift towards warmer colour palettes continues, with earth tones and natural hues taking centre stage. Rich browns, sandy beiges, and warm wood floors replace the cooler grays of previous years, adding coziness and a welcoming atmosphere to any room.

Explore Bold Patterns and Textures

Bold patterns and textures are making a significant comeback. Carpets featuring intricate designs and vibrant colours can serve as statement pieces, adding character and depth to your interiors. This trend allows homeowners to express individuality and creativity through their flooring choices.

Opt for Sustainable and Natural Materials

Sustainability remains a key focus in 2025. Natural materials like wool carpets and sustainably sourced wood flooring are highly sought after for their ecofriendly properties and timeless appeal. These options not only enhance the aesthetic of your home but also contribute to a healthier environment.

human BiomeChaniCs

In my last article, I discussed the importance of Human Biomechanics – how we sit stand, walk and move. These biomechanical issues are widespread; almost all of us have biomechanical inefficiencies that explain why so many/most of us suffer with low level or even acute lower back, hip, or knee pain etc etc.

For example, if during foot contact upon walking, jogging or running; the foot collapses /rolls inwards (over pronation); this forces the lower leg to rotate internally (internal rotation); this in turn causes knee valgum (knock knees ); this in turn leads to the wrong

angle ( collapsing inwards) of the thigh bone (femur). This part of the full biomechanical chain alone, can put tremendous extra strain on the foot, ankle, knee and hip/pelvis.

Furthermore, as the leg extends (straightens), taking body weight, the opposite hip falls away, resulting in both hips NOT being horizontal. To ensure that the eyes stay horizontally aligned, and the whole body does not collapse to the one side, the opposite shoulder drops further than in the stationary stance position, to counterbalance the bodyweight. Again, here the shoulders are not horizontal.

It is clear that the resulting angles of the his/ pelvis and the shoulders can only produce one consequence for the spine (back); it puts it in a completely incorrect and unstable position. The spine can only relax and function smoothly and efficiently when it has a horizontal, stable platform to sit on, below and level/ in horizontal alignment with the shoulders , above. The predicted consequences of misaligned movement patterns ( poor biomechanics) is

COMPENSATION. The human musculosleletal system is overworking and being overloaded at each and every stride, trying to compensate at each and every link in the movement chain, to try and maintain upright, correct, vertical postural alignment, that the skeleton craves in order to continue to work and function fluently, efficiently and majestically.

Without ideal, correct postural alignment, and hence fluid movement, the body will begin to tighten and tighten, until niggles, aches and pains begin to appear. For any regular exerciser with inefficient movement patterns, regular mainstream, traditional exercising, like running, lunging, jumping, twisting, bending, squatting and almost any dynamic exercises or movements – just don’t work.

Some individuals can run comfortably and consistently without ankle, knee, hip or spinal pain, but many simply cannot.

Some individuals can squat and lunge comfortably and consistently without pain, but so many cannot.

Some can play tennis, golf, cricket, football without knee/ back pain, but so many cannot.

Understandably, this leads to the whole exercising world being completely confused as to whether these and so many other exercises are good for us or not – are these sports, activities and exercises good for us or not – what exercises should we do, and what exercises should we not do?

Prescribing traditional exercise routines for individuals that have biomechanical inefficiencies simply won’t work. This is why so many exercisers are getting worse, not better.

This is exactly why slow-motion analysis is one of my Golden Rules, and why my exercise routines, consist of all the various components needed to address these multi-segmental issues.

We have established that efficient human musculoskeletal movement patterns can be majestic in its capabilities, but we have also established that it is nothing short of miraculous to have or achieve this. This dictates that every one of us has a biomechanical pattern that needs close inspection and close attention.

In short, every one of us needs varied and detailed exercise routines to address the flexibility, fluidity, stability, balance and strength of each of the body’s segments – feet, ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, spine, head, neck and shoulders – in isolation and the flexibility, fluidity, stability, balance and strength of the human kinetic chain as a whole.

This concludes that YOU have musculoskeletal issues that are holding you back - issues that you MUST understand, respect and deal with. It is so important to understand and realise the enormous influence – the power, almost – that correct, varied, balanced and wellexecuted exercises can have on the human body.

This is why I have written my new book and developed the world’s most comprehensive/ detailed exercise routines that will work for EVERYONE, whatever your level of expertise or experience. In my next article I will start to explain why so many traditional exercises are performed incorrectly.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES

THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS

With over 50 years in the hairdressing industry, Nick and Royston’s greatest legacy is the incredible talent they have nurtured and inspired. This year’s British Hairdressing Awards was a testament to their influence, with three finalists trained under their guidance.

Invited by ‘Welsh Nick’, to join his table at the final ceremony held at the iconic The Grosvenor Hotel, Welsh Nick joined Royston Blythe Shrewsbury after seeking Nick and Royston expertise to refine his skills. At the salon for over 8 years, before opening Nicholas James in South Wales, Nick has established a thriving salon and a growing celebrity clientele. He has remained close friends with Nick and Royston, who had continued to help and support his journey and were thrilled to join him for this very special evening.

A great opportunity to catch up with some old faces, the night ended on an emotional high, with Welsh Nick scooping the award for Wales and Southwest Hairdresser of The Year. What an achievement after only three years! Congratulations to Nick.

NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING

After 6 very happy years in the beautiful village of Chesterton, Nick and Royston have decided to move on. Their stunning home had been completely renovated, so it was no surprise that it sold on the very first day of viewings. Completion of the sale was in an amazing 5 weeks!

So, a massive thank you to Caroline Eaton from Berriman Eaton, for their excellent service.

Where are they off to, I hear you all ask? Well, all will be revealed in our next edition - stay tuned!

TILLY’S CHARITY GALA

This year marked the 10th anniversary of Tilly’s Charity Gala in aid of CoppaFeel, held at Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa. The event, organised by Sian, owner of the beautiful bridal boutique, Tilly Trotters, was a sparkling celebration of generosity and community spirit.

Nick and Royston joined friends Ami, Gemma and Jade Dugdalerecently crowned Wedding Planner of the Year - to enjoy an evening of music by Tom Kirkpatrick, champagne and canapés. The gala was an unforgettable night for a truly worthwhile cause. Here’s to many more years of this incredible event!

MIDLANDS AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY BALL

The prestigious Recognition Awards and Charity Ball for the Midlands Air Ambulance took place at the Motorcycle Museum, and Nick and Royston were honoured to present one of the awards. The evening celebrated the selfless dedication of lifesaving air crew, tireless fundraisers and committed volunteers.

Hosted by Ed James (Heart FM), Richie Anderson (BBC Radio 2) and Nina Hossain (ITN), alongside entertainer Paul Elliott from the Chuckle Brothers, guests were welcomed with a cocktail reception before enjoying a delicious three-course dinner.

The night was a heartfelt tribute to exceptional individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities - a truly special and inspiring occasion.

Winter Weddings

There is nothing more romantic than a winter wedding: snow on the ground, frost in the air and tree bowers dripping with frozen crystals, while inside is warm and cosy with glowing open fires, twinkling candlelight and winter foliage.

Winter used to be considered the “off season”, but venues have now wised up to the fact that it is a popular time of year to marry. That means prices can be the same as peak season, especially the week between Christmas and New Year. So if you’re planning a winter wedding, it’s best to embrace the season and use what is readily available to you.

Make sure your venue works in the winter

If you are planning a winter wedding, it’s important to view the venue in the winter to see how it works in the colder months. If you are attracted to venues that offer open fires with large ornate fireplaces to enhance the wintery theme, remember to ask the venue manager when you are viewing if the fires are working and can be lit. It’s also worth checking to see if you can have candles as many venues do not allow naked flames. (If you’re not allowed, don’t worry, use storm lanterns, which, when wreathed in winter foliage, look just the part.)

When booking the venue, take care to avoid any cold-weather mishaps. Make sure that your guests can actually get to the venue and that there is sufficient parking.

If your wedding or reception is in a remote area, leave enough time in the schedule for people to get to the destination, just in case bad weather slows them down. It might be worth having your ceremony and reception at the same venue, to save your guests from additional travels if there is bad weather.

Check with the venue to make sure that there is sufficient matting at the entrance point, so that guests can wipe their shoes and not tread slushy footprints inside, and try to book somewhere that has plenty of space between the main entrance and the access to the reception room. That way, you’ll keep the reception area toasty and warm.

A cloakroom (and if possible a cloak room attendant) is also important, so that guests can leave their belongings, such as heavy coats and scarves, safely.

Hotels will have sufficient heating, but it is worth checking to see if venues such as marquees or church halls have heating in place. Conversely, when the disco starts up it can get hot and sticky, so check with the venue manager to see if the heating can be reduced in that particular area.

Decoration

There are plenty of ways to decorate your venue to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. With the sun setting early in the winter months, candles and crystals add to wintery

romance to any setting. To add to the ambience, consider bringing in lush, soft textures: deep red, velvety roses set among dark green foliage, such as holly (especially with the red berries), will add a touch of luxury to the setting. Enhance this with wide velvet ribbon that you can tie around napkins or centrepieces. You could even tie the ribbon to the chairs and hang themed decorations, such a wooden hearts or crystal snowflakes.

What to wear

If ever there was an excuse to use vibrant colours, such as forest greens, deep crimsons and brilliant whites, then certainly winter is the season to do it. You can also use heavier fabrics – velvet or sensual silk satins – or if you prefer lace, a heavier variety such as Battenberg lace is more substantial and will keep you warmer. The best part of winter wedding fashion is that you can indulge in luxurious full skirts without the fear of getting too hot or weighed down with the extra fabric. Choose a style of dress that has sleeves for extra protection and warmth – ¾ sleeves in particular can look very feminine

Accessories

If you still want to wear a shoulder-baring strapless gown or slinky sheath, think

carefully about your accessories. You will need to keep warm and you certainly want to avoid shivering your way through your photography session. Enveloping yourself in a stole, warm shawl or cashmere wrap will add heaps of charm and keep you toasty. Look to the more substantial fabrics, such as velvet or faux fur, to complement your gown and embellish your winter wonderland look.

Choose shoes carefully. Go for a close-toed style (strappy heels could be hazardous if there is snow) as there might be ice – or even worse – slush on the ground. A pair of white boots that will peep out from under you dress could also work – it will ensure you are sure footed, but you could always change into heels once you are safely at the reception venue. If snow is forecast, buy a pair of white snow boots that you can change in and out of to travel between venues - fun for the photographs, too!

Add gloves for a touch of Hollywood glamour and choose a colour that complements your flowers or theme. Perhaps dress your groom in a slick suit and add a scarf in the same colour as your gloves to match the wedding colour theme.

Winter Treats

Winter weddings give you the opportunity to serve your guests something different and seasonal. Serve an alternative reception drink, such as mulled wine served with mini mince pie or Winter Pimms with gingerbread men. Or, for sheer decadence, serve a white hot chocolate with marshmallow dips.

For the favours, choose pots of homemade hedgerow jam or jars of chutney or pickle. Alternatively, bag up snowflake shortbread biscuits piped in white icing and tied with a ribbon in your wedding colours. With careful planning, you can enjoy all the usual wedding traditions bundled up in a festive winter theme.

This dish is great for anytime of day but commonly known as a breakfast dish. It is usually made with rice but for a lower carb version I use cauliower instead and replace the wine with water.

Check the haddock for any bones and remove if you find any. Place the haddock on a baking sheet with some parchment paper underneath. Cook in the oven for about 12 minutes and then allow to cool a little before taking the flesh off the skin.

In a frying or sautee pan add the ghee or oil and heat on medium adding the onion wedges first, once the onion is tarting to soften add in the diced courgette and the blitzed cauliflower and allow to cook for about 10 minutes.

Add in the raisins, stock jelly and white wine or water and simmer until half of the liquid has evaporated and then add in the curry powder and turmeric.

While this is happening boil the eggs for 6 minutes then allow to cool little before shelling.

Taste the cauliflower to check if it is soft and then add in the haddock with a few squeezes of lemon juice. Allow this to simmer for about 5 minutes to heat the fish then to finish ready for serving stir in a good handful of fresh spinach leaves and once plated add 2 eggs cut in half on each dish. Finish with some fresh coriander if you have it or some finely sliced tips of spring onions.

reCognising signs oF pain in your Feline Friend: noodles’ Journey Our

Cats are masters of hiding pain, making it challenging for pet owners to detect discomfort. Pain in cats can result from conditions such as arthritis, dental disease or injuries. Owners may not notice until the condition becomes severe, so recognising subtle behavioral changes early can help prevent progression of the problem. At PowisVets, we aim to ensure your cat lives a comfortable and pain-free life.

One of our recent patients, a charming cat called Noodles and his owner Chris, have seen the importance of early detection and effective management of pain due to arthritis.

Noodles: The Cat Who Wasn’t Himself

Noodles, an 11-year-old domestic shorthair, began showing signs of arthritis. Once a playful and energetic cat, Chris noticed that he had became withdrawn, avoided his favourite spots to jump on and stopped greeting Chris at the door. Chris initially attributed these changes to aging but grew concerned when Noodles avoided jumping onto the windowsill to watch birds.

“I thought he was just slowing down with age,” Chris explained. “But when he stopped doing things he loved, I realized he might be in pain.”

Subtle Signs of Pain in Cats

Cats in pain often exhibit subtle changes that owners might overlook. Key signs to watch for include:

• Behavioural changes: Increased irritability, withdrawal, or isolation.

• Altered grooming habits: Cats in pain may groom less or excessively in certain areas.

• Difficulty with mobility: Hesitation to

jump or climb.

• Appetite changes: Reduced eating or unusual food preferences.

• Vocalization changes: More frequent or different meowing tones.

• Posture or movement issues: Limping, stiffness, or changes in lying posture.

Chris noticed several of these signs in Noodles and brought him to PowisVets for evaluation.

Diagnosis and Relief

After a thorough exam, Noodles was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, a common but painful joint condition in older cats.

The team at PowisVets were able to recommend an innovative antibody treatment for feline osteoarthritis that reduces pain and discomfort and is generally considered safe for most cats. It is specifically designed for cats and provides long-lasting relief, improving their quality of life without the need for daily oral medication.

“After Noodles received his first treatment, we saw an immediate change. Within days, he was back to jumping on his favourite spots and even playing with his toys again. It was incredible to see him return to his old self and I could tell he was much happier.”

Caring for your Cat’s Comfort

At PowisVets, we understand the importance of providing your cat with the best care possible, especially as they age. Whether it’s pain management for arthritis or addressing other health concerns, we’re here to support you every step of the way. If you notice any signs of pain in your cat, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

5* all the way. They could not have been kinder and more caring. I have no hesitation in recommending Powis Vets.

WelCome to rimini For a romantiC enCounter

For those considering a weekend break and perhaps hoping to rekindle an air of romance, Rimini, located beside the glittering waters of the Adriatic Sea, offers visitors a tantalising glimpse into its colourful kaleidoscope of history and culture.

Founded by the Romans in 268 BC, Rimini was recognised as an area of strategic importance and three major Roman roads were duly constructed; the Via Flaminia, the Via Popilian, and the Via Aemilian, and the city rapidly became an important communications hub between the north and south of the peninsula. Monuments celebrating several Roman emperors remain in situ today and include the magnificent Augustus Arch, which features sculptures of Apollo, Neptune and Jupiter. Commissioned in 27BC by the Roman Senate, the arch was built to honour the Emperor Augustus, who founded the Roman Principate and controlled the Roman Empire from 27 BC until his death.

I took a leisurely stroll along the Corso d’Augusto, which leads onto a piazza, once named after Julius Caesar, who, it is said, gathered his troops there in 49BC. The piazza is now named Tre Martiri in honour of three brave partisans, Luigi Nicolò, Adelio Pagliarini and Mario Capelli, who were tried by a German court for stockpiling weapons and ammunition and subsequently hanged in the square in August 1944. The exact place of the

execution is marked on the square and serves as a constant reminder of those who gave their lives for the benefit of all.

Seeking high end accommodation with outstanding levels of comfort and service and exceptional style, I checked into the Grand Hotel, which features a Liberty style pink façade and was declared a protected national monument in 1994. Built in 1908 and located in the heart of a lush and verdant park covering 4000 square metres, this property oozes with elegance and is also set right on the seafront in Marina Centro. Amenities include two swimming pools, a private beach, sports facilities, a spa and wellness centre and a private beach. Accommodations are spacious with walls adorned with works of art and tastefully furnished with original XVIII century French and Venetian antiques and the collection of original Venetian chandeliers lend a warm glow to the sumptuous décor.

The Grand Hotel was featured in several films directed by the celebrated screen writer and film director Federico Fellini, who was born in Rimini in 1920. His film Amarcord, released in 1973, featured the Grand Hotel as a backdrop in a number of scenes and he became a regular guest. His career spanned almost five decades and he was nominated for twelve Academy Awards, received four Oscars in the ‘best foreign film’ category and was awarded the Palme d’Or for his film La Dolce Vita, which

Photographer Vito Arcomano

was released in 1960 and remains one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time.

For my own personal taste of ‘the good life’ I took an evening walk along to the Tiberius Bridge, which spans the Marecchia River, and marks the entrance to the Via Aemilian, Dating back to 21AD. The glorious bridge features five semi-circular arches and rests on its original foundations, which are made up of wooden stilts. Construction began during the reign of Augustus and was completed when his successor Tiberius was in power.

As I stood on the bridge, admiring the view, I reflected on the words of Federico Fellini, who once said ‘There is no end, there is no beginning, there is only the passion of life’.

Kia sorento hev ‘2’

The Kia Sorento has been around for quite some time, it is a large SUV with the capacity to accommodate 7 people and this is one of the big selling points of this particular vehicle, writes Bob Hickman.

The space within the vehicle really is incredible, a 7-seater as standard and there is ample room in all 3 rows of seats for adults. The very rear seats are tight but then again you are making a vehicle that will carry 7 people with a degree of luggage but not a huge amount.

The Sorento is available with 3 different equipment levels and they are badged as 2, 3, and 4. My particular 1.6 turbo charged 6-speed automatic was the entry level Number 2 and this had more than sufficient equipment for my needs and my requirements. There is a choice of a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a diesel powertrain. CO emissions can be as low as 37g/km and all of the engines meet the latest Euro 6 emission standards.

The interior is comfortable and practical. The front seats were heated and so was the steering wheel.

To drive the Sorento is pretty much where you think you will be, it is a large, heavy SUV so therefore it is never going to be nimble on country roads but it is a stable companion on the motorway. It is really on its own on long distance, or motorway journeys.

The Sorento was equipped with Apple and Android play, keyless entry, a wonderful reversing camera and even the 17” alloy wheels don’t look too bad. In and around the city it was quite easy to drive, very light and at times I felt perhaps over assisted power steering, the visibility all round is quite good and of course being that little bit higher makes visibility even better for manoeuvring.

As previously mentioned, the vehicle is a 7-seater, The third very back row, in what

would normally be the luggage area is okay, they fold and slide out of the way. Whilst cocooned in the rear seats, 6 and 7, there was quite a bit of space, the main issue is that the floor is quite high so you will be sitting with your knees somewhat propped up not comfortable for big trips, but certainly okay for in and around and short journeys. It goes without saying, boot space when the rear seats are in place is somewhat limited. Fold them down and you get a very roomy amount of space, drop all the rear seats and you have almost a van-like proportion, with nearly 2,000 litres of space.

Driver information is contained within the 12.3-inch infotainment screen, my 2-model also had regular instruments in another display. I did like the factor that certain aspects of the vehicle are controlled from the steering wheel and you do not have to avert your eyes to a big screen to even operate simple things like the heating system.

In the current situation that we live in there is

a plethora of safety equipment fitted. Forward Collision avoidance, Intelligent speed, Lane follow. One of the features which is now common place if you go even a mere one or two miles per hour over the speed limit a bell will ring, this is a European controlled feature that we can do nothing about.

The vehicle had a 1598cc petrol engine, producing 212bhp. Kia suggest a top speed of 113mph and a 0-62 in 9.7 seconds. The fuel consumption was quoted on the combined mpg at 42.2mpg. During my week on quite a large amount of mileage and a mixture of lanes, towns and motorway, I actually achieved 46mpg which considering the size and the capacity of the vehicle, was exceptionally good.

Kia have continued with their excellent 7-year, 100,000 miles warranty with a 12 months Roadside Package incorporated as well.

The vehicle as tested had an on the road price of £42,995.

Our Finance & Legal presidents Change, marKets remain

As I write this, we have just witnessed the US elections. The U.S. president is often considered one of the world’s most powerful figures, wielding substantial influence over the world’s largest economy and one of its most formidable militaries, albeit limited by a system of checks and balances through Congress. Perhaps it is understandable that the media, politicians, celebrities and business owners alike wished to make their voice heard during campaign season… it was a noisy time of year!

The race was extremely close… the former President Donald Trump pursued a second term for the Republicans, while Vice President Kamala Harris hoped to make history as the first female president for the Democrats. Polls and betting markets were sharply divided; major polls leaned towards a Harris victory, yet many prominent bookmakers saw Trump as the frontrunner.

For investors, it is natural at times of political uncertainty to wonder whether they ought to act, perhaps altering their portfolio to position for a specific outcome, or to move money into cash deposits until things ‘settle down’.

The challenge is that it is not enough to know what the outcome of the election would be, one also needs to know - without the benefit of hindsight - how the market will react once the event occurs. Would a Trump victory be good or bad for markets? What about a Harris win? Answering these questions is akin to guesswork, despite what some of the financial press might have us believe.

A better strategy, is to outsource this guesswork to the market itself. Taking on the known risk that equity returns are far less certain than holding cash rewards investors who ignore this short-term noise and focus on the long-term. The choice of the US President is important to some, but to the long-term investor it is largely irrelevant.

At Cre8 our systematic approach to investing means our portfolios are low cost, well diversified and we help you limit portfolio change.
