Autumn season is calling for you to update, improve or redesign your home interior? If so, you’ll be keen to find a selection of quality and contemporary furniture to complete the new look at Pargeter’s. With over three floors, packed with modern designs from leading British brands, there will be plenty to suit every home interior style.

With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit. In fact, customers at Pargeter’s are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains:

expensive to buy from than larger group stores. But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop at Pargeter’s, very often we are cheaper and will price-match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible price combined with the highest standard of customer service.”

Unlike their competitors, the staff at Pargeter’s aren’t on commission, which means their focus is entirely on helping you make the purchase that’s right for you – if, of course, you decide to buy from the company.

MADEINENGLAND

As we step into autumn 2024, interior design trends are embracing a blend of cosy warmth and modern sophistication. Rich, earthy tones such as, olive green, and mustard yellow are taking centre stage, infusing spaces with a sense of comfort and connection to nature. Textures play a vital role this season and natural wood finishes adding depth and character to rooms. Mixing these textures creates a harmonious balance that invites relaxation and a touch of luxury into living spaces.

In terms of furniture and decor, the autumn 2024 trends are leaning towards sustainable and artisanal pieces. Handcrafted furniture made from natural materials like rattan, bamboo, and reclaimed wood is gaining popularity, reflecting a growing emphasis on eco-conscious design choices.

Statement lighting fixtures, particularly those with organic shapes and warm metallic finishes, are becoming focal points in rooms, adding a touch of elegance and personality.

Our Home

Additionally, incorporating indoor plants and botanical motifs into the decor brings a refreshing and rejuvenating element to interiors, enhancing the overall ambiance with a hint of greenery.

As we delve deeper into autumn 2024, the concept of "biophilic design" is making its mark in interior spaces.

This design approach focuses on connecting people with nature through elements like natural light, greenery, and natural materials. Biophilic design principles are being integrated into homes through features like large windows that maximize natural light, living green walls that purify the air, and furniture designs inspired by organic shapes found in nature. Embracing biophilic design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of interiors but also promotes wellbeing by creating spaces that foster a deeper connection with the natural world, making homes a sanctuary of tranquillity and balance.

Interior trends for autumn 2024 are expected to blend comfort, sustainability, and a touch of nostalgia. Here are some key trends:

eMPOWer YOur MenOPause: the BeneFits OF resistanCe training FOr WOMen

Menopause can feel like a rollercoaster, with all its physical and emotional ups and downs. But here's the good news: resistance training can be a game-changer during this time. We're not talking about becoming a bodybuilder or spending hours at the gym; just incorporating some strength exercises into your routine can make a world of difference.

First off, let's talk about bone health. As estrogen levels drop during menopause, women are at a higher risk of osteoporosis, which means weaker bones and a higher chance of fractures. Resistance training, like lifting weights or using resistance bands, helps strengthen your bones. When you put stress on your bones through these exercises, your body responds by increasing bone density. This means you’ll be more resilient to falls and fractures.

Then there's muscle mass. Naturally, as we age, we lose muscle – it’s just part of the deal. This muscle loss speeds up during menopause, which can affect your metabolism and overall strength. By doing regular resistance exercises, you're helping to maintain and even build muscle. This isn’t just about looking toned (though that’s a nice bonus); it’s about staying strong and independent as you get older. Stronger muscles also mean better balance and stability, reducing the risk of falls.

Let’s not forget about mental health. Menopause can bring mood swings, anxiety, and even depression. Exercise, including resistance training, releases endorphins, which are those feel-good hormones. Lifting

weights or doing bodyweight exercises can boost your mood, reduce stress, and give you a sense of accomplishment. Plus, it’s empowering to feel strong in your body, especially during a time when many women might feel like they’re losing control over it.

Finally, resistance training helps with weight management. Metabolism naturally slows down with age, and the hormonal changes during menopause can lead to weight gain, especially around the belly. Building muscle helps rev up your metabolism, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

So, if you’re approaching or going through menopause, think about adding some resistance training into your routine. Your bones, muscles, and mood will thank you!

hearing aiDs - nhs Or Private?

It can be a really difficult decision when using the right provider for your hearing and earcare needs. There are several factors to consider.

In reality you have 3 choices;

· NHS

· Private High Street Providers

· Independent Hearing Care

NHS

We are lucky to have an NHS hearing aid service in this country but we are all aware of the pressures the NHS are under and this also affects the audiology service. NHS hearing aids are free at the point of service, including fittings, follow-up appointments, and maintenance. The hearing aids are of a reasonable quality but tend to be older technology and the choice is very limited. The service is also being reduced in some areas now.

Follow-up services and maintenance are free, including any necessary adjustments, repairs, and battery replacements. There is, however, often a wait for aftercare and the service in general.

HIGH STREET PRoVIDERS

Most of the branded high street providers such as Boots, Specsavers etc are either owned by or have ties with certain suppliers. This can limit the choice you are offered as they will often guide you towards their own brand technology or to those suppliers they are affiliated with. They will have access to the latest technology, which might include more discreet options or higher sound quality. The price of the hearing aids will normally include fittings, follow-up appointments, and ongoing maintenance.

Access to appointments and fittings will be quicker than the NHS. Some centres may also offer ear wax removal. You may have to pay for ongoing maintenance and any necessary

repairs, depending on the provider’s policy. Always check first.

INDEPENDENT HEARING C ARE SPECIALISTS

Independent providers like our HEAR IN clinics are not tied to any manufacturer and with over 100 different hearing aids to choose from at any one time we can offer great choice. We use only very latest in hearing aid technology including the most discreet hearing aids with Bluetooth connectivity, that are personalised to your listening needs, with a guarantee of up to 5years and lifetime of aftercare included. We offer the gold standard in ear wax removal using ENT microscopes.

Service quality is key and our clinics are bespoke to hearing care with our clinical team all professionally trained experts supported by the friendliest receptionists guaranteed to make you feel welcome. We only do ears, nothing else!

RECommENDATIoNS:

• If Budget is a Concern: NHS hearing aids are a good option. They provide good quality devices and free ongoing care.

• If Advanced Technology is a Priority: Consider private hearing aids for the latest features, excellent technology and more personalised service.

It’s also worth consulting with an audiologist to discuss your specific hearing needs and get professional advice tailored to your situation.

During the last few articles I have discussed many of the myths and misconceptions, that have served to misrepresent exercise, to cloud opinion and understanding. They have led to exercise becoming a guessing game with individuals simply following others, not really knowing if they are doing things correctly. It has been a major contributing factor to explain why exercise has been, and still is, so confusing to many.

With all that said, there is one factor that remains elusive – a factor that has been completely overlooked and that is essential to each and every one of us. It’s a fundamental missing link that should, must underpin every exercise programme, routine or regime.

As a sport scientist, I have always seen and done things differently. I have always respected that the ‘personal’ in personal trainer is not about me, it’s about my client –it’s about YOU. As a sport scientist, I appreciate that understanding the way YOU sit, stand, walk and move is imperative if I am to come to an understanding of YOU. Without this understanding, prescribing bespoke exercise programmes becomes a guessing game, with your results being in the lap of the gods.

But what is this missing link? What are these movement patterns? The study and science of Human movement is called HUMAN BIOMECHANICS.

The fundamental factor that should and must underpin your exercise programme is YOU.

That means YOUR body, YOUR proportions and strengths, YOUR weaknesses and imbalances, YOUR flexibility, YOUR muscles and joints, YOUR posture, YOUR feet, legs, hips, and pelvis, YOUR spine, YOUR neck, shoulders and arms, YOUR body type, YOUR stance, YOUR movement patterns and YOUR physiological make-up. It is everything that makes YOU unique.

But what is it about you that makes you a unique individual?

Human beings are an extremely complex array of muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, bones, joints and segments that must all perform as a well-oiled machine, reacting consistently and fluidly with millisecond timing in order for us to move, walk, run, sit, stand, jump, lift, carry, twist and bend efficiently.

One thing is often misunderstood or even completely overlooked: the understanding that the movement of one segment ( eg the knee ) has consequences for the next segment ( the hips and pelvis ) and the next ( the spine ) and so on, throughout the entire body from head to toe. This sequence or chain reaction is known as the human kinetic chain and the scientific understanding of this complex sequence is known as HUMAN BIOMECHANICS, the mechanics of human movement.

Even though most of us have two feet, two legs, two hips, a pelvis, a spine and two arms and generally move in a similar

way, we all have a unique and personal movement pattern sequence. At first glance this sequence appears universal, but with detailed scrutiny significant imperfections may and usually do appear. The knowledge, the understanding of these imperfections is CRITICAL. Understanding how and more importantly why YOU move the way you do is vital in compiling YOUR exercise programmes. We ALL need a much greater understanding of our UNIQUE KINETIC CHAIN of MOVEMENT.

A full scientific, mathematical biomechanical analysis of the human body while running, jumping, twisting, bending, reaching, catching, throwing, swimming, rowing, squatting or lunging – not to mention swinging a golf club, hitting a tennis serve or kicking a football – is eye-watering in its complexity.

Even when something as simple as walking (gait) is given a full biomechanical analysis, it becomes abundantly clear that perfect or near-perfect movement patterns are nothing short of miraculous. Almost all of us have inefficiencies in our movement patterns. These Inefficient movement patterns put very significant demands on the human body, especially with repetitious movements. Furthermore, it is clear to see that exercises like jogging or running put further demands on our biomechanical functioning, reducing efficiency, representing a tremendously increased load throughout the entire skeleton, on each and every stride.

If you have perfect or near-perfect biomechanics your body can absorb and compensate for these loads beautifully, like a well-oiled machine, but as I have stated, because of its extreme complexity it would be nothing short of a miracle to have such perfect biomechanics. These biomechanical inefficiencies cause compensatory reactions throughout the entire musculoskeletal system and explain why so many individuals suffer niggles, aches, pains and injuries arising

from many activities. It also explains why the whole world suffers from back pain, exercisers and non-exercisers. It also proves to me that EVERYONE IS GETTING IT WRONG !!!!

The exercise boom in the last 40 years has not resulted in better, fitter, stronger, more wellbalanced human bodies. It is in fact having the opposite effect. Analysis of medical statistics/ data completely backs this up. In my opinion, this is simply unacceptable and cannot continue.

Are your Biomechanics affecting YOU. Are your movement patterns causing you knee, hip, back, neck or shoulder pain. The answer is quite simply – YES.

So movement – YOUR movement is exactly what you need to analyse.

This is my main GOLDEN RULE – analyse YOUR movement patterns.

In my next article, I will explain this in more detail – how to analyse your movement, what to look out for, and more importantly, what YOU need to do to maximise your benefits from exercise. The body is quite remarkable at ironing out and rectifying a multitude of issues when it is given the correct variety and balance of exercises. But we must encourage it, nurse it and smother it in beautifully wellcrafted, well-oiled varied and fluid exercises and movements. When we do this, it will respond as it never has before, banishing your niggles, aches and pains, increasing your stability, recovering from your injuries and bullet-proofing your musculoskeletal system, allowing it to perform, flourish and produce unbelievable results.

Please visit my website at –thefatherfigureoffitness.com for details of my new book, and the secret exercise programmes that I have developed and have used on all my celebrity clients.

POST WEDDING TO DO LIST

Organising a wedding is both exhausting and exhilarating. Once it’s all over and you are back from honeymoon it’s easy to feel somewhat deflated or fatigued, but there are still plenty of things that need to be done before you can truly settle into married life.

Pre-Honeymoon Preparation

Before heading off on your honeymoon, make sure your house is in order. There is nothing more depressing than returning after your romantic break to find the chaos of the wedding preparations reminding you that it’s all over!

You will no doubt have received gifts and even sums of money so make sure that they are tucked out of eyesight. A pile of unopened gifts and cards on the dining room table could notify prying eyes that you are not at home! Likewise have a neighbour collect your post while you’re away. If you haven’t settled all the bills from the wedding make sure your suppliers are notified of your holiday plans and assure them that all bills will be paid on your return.

You really don’t want to be chased for payment on your honeymoon so if everyone is clear of the payment timeline you and your loved one can turn off your phones, leave the laptop at home, and make the most of your time together as newlyweds before heading back to reality.

Thank You Cards

One of the first things you need to do is send out thank you cards to the people who attended the wedding and remember that you are not just thanking them for their gift. Some guests will have gone to great expense to join you on your special day, having paid out for their outfits, accommodation, taxi and bar bills as well as a present! The least you can do is send a short, personalised message to each guest or couple, thanking them for their time and effort as well as your wedding present.

This is quite a task and is much more easily achieved if you do it in batches. Set yourself a goal of 10 to 20 per day, split the task with your new spouse and you’ll find you’ll be finished in no time at all. With a smaller amount to write each day you can take more time over them and the chances are that your messages will be more heartfelt than they might be if you are trying to write them all in one go!

Our Weddings

Clean The Dress

Your wedding dress is probably the most expensive item of clothing you have ever purchased and worn. Of course, unlike the Groom who will probably wear his suit again, you will not be wearing your dress again (unless you attend a Trash the Dress party) but you might decide to sell it, or even keep it in the family to be passed down to your children or grandchildren. You may want to keep old traditions alive and use the dress to make christening dresses or trimming for your little one’s cradle when the time comes. The longer you wait, the more stubborn those stains become, so aim to have your dress dry cleaned and packed carefully if storing as soon as possible.

Change Your Name

You may be a Thoroughly Modern Millie and have decided to keep your own name but if not, you will need to think about starting the tedious process of changing your surname. Everyone will need to be notified. Banks, insurance providers, health records etc. and they will all need a copy of your marriage certificate or in some cases a visit in person, though many vendors will allow you to at least start the process online.

Choose Your Photographs

It’s always really exciting receiving the professional images of your wedding from the photographer and it provides the perfect excuse to cuddle up with your new spouse, crack open a bottle of champagne and relive the joy and romance of your special day. Once you have had a good look through you will

need to choose which photographs you want and in what format. Don’t forget to order extras for family and friends. This can be far harder than it seems as you will probably want to keep all of them, but don’t take too long. Depending on the conditions of your photography contract, additional charges may be incurred for orders placed outside a specified time.

The Legal Stuff

If you haven’t already talked about money and how to fund your married lifestyle, now is the time to do it. Decide if you are combining incomes and if there will there be joint accounts. Make a date to visit a trusted lawyer to discuss your financial future and security and make changes to beneficiaries of superannuation, life insurance and wills. It’s the least exciting item on the ‘to do list’, but by far the most important.

Review Your Wedding Suppliers

All being well you will have been thrilled with every element of your wedding so it’s now time to share the love. After all, how many reviews did you read when selecting your suppliers? Do your bit and make the effort to supply feedback for wedding service providers. Be truthful and mention both those you felt under-delivered or exceeded your expectations. A positive supplier review will encourage new clients, while constructive criticism will help them identify weaknesses and improve their services.

There’s nothing quite like word of mouth from those who’ve gone before to give a newly engaged couple starting their wedding planning a few hints and tips. As you’ll have just been through it, you’re best placed to give recommendations to start them off.

Enjoy Married Life

Once these little things have been addressed there is little more to do than sit back, enjoy married life, and in time start, gently planning for your happy future together.

Wedding of the Year

Weddings are always special events, and watching our friends Dawn and Ashley Ward’s daughter, Taylor, exchange vows with former Manchester City player Riyad Mahrez was no exception. Having recently moved to Saudi Arabia, Taylor and Riyad chose the romantic and breathtaking Lake Como as the perfect destination to tie the knot. They invited their closest friends and family to join them for a three-day wedding extravaganza.

Nick and Royston arrived a few days early to explore and discover all the delights of Lake Como. They stayed at the luxurious Grand Hotel Victoria in Menaggio, a late 19th-century gem offering a perfect combination of fabulous shopping, Michelin-starred restaurants, a wellness spa for relaxation, and Victoria Beach to boost their tans.

Day 1

The festivities kicked off the day before the wedding with an Arabian Nights-themed party. The hotel gardens were transformed into an Arabic tent, and out of respect for Riyad's culture, guests were asked to wear traditional Arabic attire. Looking stunning in their exquisite outfits, the guests enjoyed amazing Arabic cuisine and entertainment, including fire eaters, belly dancers, and magicians. The evening was truly magical.

Wedding Day

The wedding ceremony took place at the stunning Villa Balbiano in Tremezzina, famously featured in Lady Gaga’s film House of Gucci. Situated on the waterfront with beautiful gardens, the villa boasts its own private pier and boathouse. Adorned with pink and white roses, the ceremony was held on the terrace overlooking the striking view of Lake Como. The bride looked stunning in a white lace gown, while the groom and guests donned Black Tie attire, making it a very Hollywood glamour affair.

The wedding breakfast featured traditional Italian cuisine, and live performances entertained guests throughout the day. The highlight of the evening was Leona Lewis serenading the happy couple as they took to the dance floor. Later, the DJ took over, and Nick, Royston, and all their friends partied the night away.

Day 3

The third day was all about winding down and relaxing after the big day. The dress code was chic beachwear for a stunning pool party at the villa. Guests lounged around the pool, enjoying champagne, cocktails, and sharing gossip from the past few days, making it the perfect ending to this extraordinary wedding celebration.

We wish this beautiful couple a lifetime of happiness.

TRENDS OF THE SEASON

The noughties aesthetic seems to be heading to the end as we are shifting towards elegant and sophisticated dressing with well cut skirts and jackets, smarter shoes and elegant handbags.

For autumn 2024, many designers are encouraging us to dress with personality again, be it through colour, fabric, form or a combination of the three, which is music to our ears as we embrace stand out and unusual fashion, alongside the staples for any wardrobe. We are seeing the rise of talking point motifs, and statement silhouette teamed with bright and bold colours, feathers, scarves and texture!

The sweeping shawls, oversized sunglasses & faux fur is the vibe on the runways, with the colour of red wine (burgundy) taking the top spot this autumn, especially for handbags.

Adding a pop of colour with accessories is a really classy way to mix up neutral tones and add a dash of sophistication. Tonal dressing with earthy rusts, greens and browns are key colours for the season.

When it comes to your choice of Knitwear, the humble cardigan is making a comeback and spiralling into the spotlight. The coziness of a jumper with the versatility of a jacket, its an absolute winner in our eyes!

The trouser is also a firm staple for the chillier months, with the barrel leg, oversized and wide leg a firm favourite and one we are super keen on - there’s nothing like being comfortable AND stylish now is there.

Other fashion inspiration for this season includes roll necks, checks, puffy skirts, liquid leather, and pointy heels are sure fire fashion must haves for the impending months.

We look forward to embracing our new collections, and helping the ladies of Stourbridge and surrounding villages and towns embrace their inner fashionista!

After a Summer of very mixed weather, it’s been hard to know what to wear, so moving forward into the Autumn lets be more decisive, trends are high shine, wear suiting with an androgynous feel, dress for the country in tweed and cable knits then add froth with fur and feathers, the Autumn colour palette is terracotta and vanilla, monochrome and tomato red with contemporary shades of caramel and grey, wear the trends you love and the shades that suit your skin tone.

Androgynous tailoring is a fabulous look, don’t be frightened to wear a shirt and tie, ballet pumps will be everywhere, but with Mary Jane styling, waistcoats are moving forward into the Autumn. I love this backless wool waistcoat from cos.com, amazing with denim or pinstripes. The pinstripe suit from meandem.com is going to be one of the hottest looks this Autumn. If you want to take tailoring into evening wear, get a tuxedo, white would be fabulous like the jacket from The Back Room Hagley, it’s a super sexy look and a massive shift from wearing a cocktail dress.

Deciding what style of coat will best suit your wardrobe changes every season, but if you invested in a duvet coat last year, you are in luck, because they are still the key casual coat, this one from glamifyfashion.com comes in 7 colours, style with leopard accessories for a very chic look. Fur and feathers plus a stylish shearling are forecast to be must have coats, check out janeandtash.co.uk for full on glamour. Let’s embrace the new season, look what you have in your wardrobe and add new key pieces, make sure you recycle what you’re not wearing! Happy Shopping!

Take the mascarpone from the fridge at least 1 hour before you intend to make a start on this recipe. Pre-heat the oven to 200˚c.

Add the mascarpone, vanilla and sugar to the bowl of the food mixer with paddle and beat on medium for 4 minutes stopping halfway through to scrape the bowl with the spatula.

Add the whole eggs one by one until each one is fully mixed in and then add in the sour cream and mix thoroughly again for 20 seconds.

Sprinkle in the salt and one teaspoon of cornflour at a time until all mixed in. Scrape the bowl again to ensure everything is off the bottom and mixed in.

Rub the nob of butter all over the cake tin and scrunch up a piece of parchment paper. Press the paper onto the bottom of the tin and into the edges so there are no parts loose. If the paper isn’t big enough and there are gaps, start again and tear a bigger piece of paper off the roll. Once the tin is lined pour the mixture in and give it a bang on the kitchen worktop to remove any gaps/air in the bottom of the pan.

Bake the cheesecake for about 50 minutes until the top is a dark brown colour and there is still a little wobble when you shake the tin. Once finished allow to cool on the side in the kitchen for a good hour or 2 then place in the fridge for a good few hours more or over night. You can eat warm if you can’t wait.

Whilst the cheesecake is baking gently warm up the cream in a small pan and add the chocolate callets / buttons stirring until fully melted and the cream looks like hot chocolate. Pour in the khalua or rum and simmer for a few minutes.

When you are ready to serve the cheesecake simply cut into portions and plate up, warm the chocolate sauce gently and spoon over each slice. Serve with frozen blackberries that have been out of the freezer for about 15 minutes or use fresh if you like but I like the sorbet effect of frozen berries.

If you want to add biscuits I recommend crushing up some amaretto biscuits and sprinkling over the top.

a PuPPY's First visit tO the vet

If there is one thing that all the staff at PowisVets will never get tired of, it’s seeing lovely young pets in for their first ever visit to the vets. Getting a brand-new puppy or kitten is a very exciting time and there are so many firsts to be enjoyed. It is also a very crucial time in the development of a young animal and that first vet visit is important to check how the little one is getting on and get them used to what a visit to the vets is like.

Little Ace came in for his first visit to the vets to get his puppy vaccinations. These are very important and protect against a lot of diseases making it safer for Ace to explore the world and experience more firsts. Chrissie the vet gave him a full head to tail examination to make sure that he was in tip top condition, and he was a very good boy throughout. Getting a clinical exam was a very new experience for Ace on top of all the new sights and smells,

but some cuddles and treats made it easier for him and he learnt the vets wasn’t so scary after all. As well as his vaccinations, Ace was also given some routine parasite treatment suited to his small size for him to get started with. These help keep him safe against fleas, mites, ticks and worms which can all be easily passed between cats and dogs when they aren’t covered. What a brave boy he was!

Vaccinations are not only important for new puppies and kittens. Booster vaccinations are recommended yearly throughout life for cats, dogs and rabbits. This not only helps protect our lovely pets against some nasty diseases, but also means they get a full health check yearly. This helps us to pick up any health problems nice and early allowing for early treatment. We can’t wait to see Ace back for his booster next year and see how much he has grown!

travel

After the collapse of communism and the Velvet Revolution, the city of Prague, capital of the Czech Republic and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

Prior to the Covid 19 pandemic I was fortunate enough to visit this bustling city and I was instantly enthralled by the magnificent examples of Renaissance, Gothic, Neoclassical, Baroque, Art Nouveau and Cubist architecture.

Just one of Prague’s outstanding neo Gothic architectural gems is the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, originally founded in the 11th century by the first Bohemian King Vratislav II. The interior of the Church features a Gothic painting of the Virgin Mary dating back to the 14th century, and it is simply magnificent. To fully appreciate the grandiose towering spires of the Basilica and the splendid panoramas of Prague I took a leisurely stroll over Charles Bridge, built in 1400, and stopped for a moment or two to admire the beauty of the baroque statues lining the parapets. I meandered along the medieval lanes in the Old Town, pausing at the Town Hall to view the Astronomical Clock built in 1490, then headed for the Castle District and discovered the wide variety of bars and lively beer gardens serving delicious knedliky (dumplings) and Klobasy

(sausages), either of which provide a welcome and tasty snack along with a cool, refreshing glass of Kozel, which, I am reliably informed, is a very popular local beer.

Another attraction, Prague Castle, is the largest ancient castle in the world. Constructed in the 9th century, the imposing castle has three courtyards, the beautiful Chapel of the Holy Cross, a picture gallery with exhibits including Ruben’s magnificent masterpiece ‘The Assembly of the Olympic Gods’. And of course, the St Vitus’ Cathedral is the site of the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Roman emperors. I sauntered around the fragrant Royal Garden, created for Ferdinand I in 1535 and gazed over the wonderful tulip gardens where the flower was first acclimatised to Europe prior to exportation to Holland. I then made my way to the Czech Crystal Celetna and was dazzled by the display of glittering products from chandeliers to exquisite jewellery and pieces of porcelain. Try not to spend too many Czech crowns, but if this proves to be impossible you can seek out the nearest bar for a tipple or two to aid your recovery!

After exploring my surroundings I felt the urge for an afternoon snooze and spotted the perfect place to stay. The Augustine Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, offers the highest

standards of service and is located in the heart of the city, below Prague Castle and a stone’s throw from Charles Bridge. Accommodations are luxuriously spacious and comfortable with rooms offering stunning views of Prague Castle, and the hotel’s courtyards and chapel. The property features vaulted ceilings, wooden beams and original doors with ornamental iron works.

I selected the rather lovely Tower Suite, which covers three floors connected by a spiral staircase with an ultra comfortable living room on the first floor leading to a spacious marble bathroom, which features a claw foot bath tub and heated flooring and I was delighted to find a generous selection of Bvlgari products. An enormous king size bed, swathed in crisp, white linens, was the perfect spot for a rejuvenating nap prior to sinking into a tub full of bubbles and then venturing out again to discover more of Prague’s treasures.

Visit Prague, it is a city that offers a unique cultural experience. *Images (excluding accommodation) provided with the kind permission of the Czech Tourism Authority.

nissan QashQai

The Nissan Qashqai has been a major tool in the Nissan arsenal for many, many years. It was really one of the pioneers of the SUV type of vehicle, when launched way back in 2007, and like any manufacturer to stand still you commit suicide, writes Bob Hickman

In 2024 the Qashqai has received just a few little tweaks, nothing dramatic. Different bumper, different grille, new LED lights, different wheels, nothing as I said earlier nothing dramatic, sufficient to freshen it up a little bit.

Inside the Qashqai has had a slight facelift in. The infotainment system is quite pleasurable to operate, and the big 12.3-inch display screen is quite user friendly and is an improvement on the previous Nissan derived system.

There is a choice of engine configurations, my particular test car was an interesting one. It came with a 1500cc 3-cylimder engine, producing in the region of 180bhp but this is not the end of the story. The engine actually

charges a 1.7-kilowatt battery which in turn provides electric motive power, quite an interesting hybrid configuration.

I like the fact that you sit quite high in the Qashqai and there is a huge amount of adjustment for the driver in the seat and steering column, this should enable anybody irrespective of size to get comfortable.

The Qashqai is not one of the smaller SUVs, but with the standard rear parking sensors and the camera system it really does assist to get you in and out of that little tight parking spot. I found the Qashqai to be refined, and well mannered. In and around town it handled exactly how you expected it to do. On the motorway, it travelled at 70mph comfortably, the automatic gearbox assisting the driving dynamics of the vehicle, and add in to the equation the cruise control and blind spot assistance this gave for a peaceful, tranquil motorway driving experience. There wasn’t too much tyre noise transmitted back from the vehicle.

In the back of the Qashqai the 2 comfortable outer sets could easily accommodate adults and the middle one, is best for children, headroom is ok belter than the old Qashqai, and headroom was generous even with the sunroof as fitted. I particularly like the amount of boot space that the Qashqai had, and when you compare it with the alternative within range at 503 litres, it was quite sufficient to accommodate the luggage for 4 people in comfort.

One feature that was quite pleasant is that the 12.3inch touchscreen had most of the information that you required but what I really liked was the factor that below the touchscreen you had the climate control, you didn’t have to fiddle about with the touchscreen to operate. In addition, the steering wheel contained other important and essential items so you do not have to avert your eyes whilst driving along.

Our Motoring

Nissan are suggesting a top speed of about 105mph, a 0-60 gallop in 7.9 seconds, and the CO2 figure of 120 g/km. Nissan also claim 53.3mpg on a combined journey and during my time with the vehicle and a variety of all sorts of roads, the computer told me I had actually achieved 55mpg which I think is pretty good for the size of the vehicle.

Nissan warranty is reasonably basic, 3-years or 60,000 miles is offered and you do have an opportunity to extend this as long as the car is less than 10 years old and has covered less than 100,000 miles. The electrical side of the propulsion components have their own 5-year or 60,000 miles warranty.

The Qashqai as tested, had an on the road price of £41,245, the actual range start from marginally over £27,000.

Our Finance & Legal the eMO tiOnal COst OF irratiOnal BehaviOur

While we all like to think that we are capable of making rational decisions, it appears that when it comes to investing, a switch inside even the most sensible person seems to flick, and rationality disappears in a cloud of emotion.

Being an investor is not easy. We have to contend not only with the erratic and unpredictable nature of markets but also the sometimes erratic and irrational way in which we will be tempted to think and behave. While understanding that being rational makes sense, putting it into practice can be exceedingly difficult.

Irrational investing manifests itself in many different ways: chopping and changing one’s investment plan influenced by what has just happened to the markets; trading shares in an online brokerage account; trying to pick market turning points, i.e. when to be in or out of different markets; being tempted into buying flavour of the month investment ideas or products; or chasing fund performance. The list of irrational decision-making opportunities is long and undistinguished.

And the result, the 'emotional cost' of our behaviour on our returns can at times, be extremely large. The temptation to try to

get in (or out) at the right time is huge yet investors have a woeful track record of timing when best to jump in and out of markets.

You see you have to get two decisions right when trying to time the market. The first is when to get out and the second is when to get back in again and the problem is that markets work pretty efficiently at reflecting new information into prices (of e.g. company shares and bonds) quickly, and thus every decision you make is a bet against the aggregate view of all investors trading in the markets.

The solution? Own a sensibly diversified portfolio, which allows you to stay invested throughout the inevitable episodes of market turmoil that will arise from time to time.

At Cre8 our systematic approach to investing means our portfolios are globally diversified and cost effective. We believe in the value of maintaining a diversified portfolio to mitigate risks and maximise returns.
