Autumn Interiors By Jane de Weijer : Make Space Interiors ltd Contact: www.makespaceinteriors.co.uk

trend into your room you are looking for bright colour, symmetry, pattern and geometrics. Go Bold.

Hi, I as the 2018 summer has been incredible and here’s hoping that it continues well into the autumn, I am looking at how we can keep those summer colours fresh in your house long after its all gone and we are back to those winter greys.

You need to be brave here. If you are thinking of painting the walls white and adding a scatter cushion or two you won’t capture the essence of the trend. You will be looking for Kilim fabrics combined with natural textures, woods, stone, indoor plants. Of course, unless you are trying to painstakingly recreate that South American hideaway it’s good to introduce a contrast. In the living room for example go for ultra-contemporary seating or, in the kitchen, keep those units simple.

TREND WATCH : AZTEC and ETHNIC INSPIRATION : It’s interesting to see how a trend can become a classic. Sitting here, inspired, on a glorious summer day during an unbelievably good spell of British sunshine, I am looking at the colours and geometric patterns of the Aztec prints which can be found on the High Street alongside the classic English florals and Swedish neutrals.

TIP: At risk of repeating myself, when you are decorating and want to introduce a trend, be it Aztec or Swedish minimalism get that mood board going. Collect pics and be bold. whatever catches your eye. Good to scroll through those online sites such as Pinterest, www.pinterest.com, and Instagram, www. instagram.com, to collate your images, but also the good old fashioned method of scissors glue and old magazines, scraps of fabrics and textures will inspire and can allow that imagination to soar. Try it.

A great look for any room in your house. It can be adapted to suit using texture and pat-tern combinations that will bring that South American, Mediterranean or African sunshine into your spaces long after ours has disappeared. In a nutshell if you are going to introduce this 12

amongst us who like to ‘rock’ the trend and then move swiftly on this paper is selfadhesive, stick it down and then peel it off Find this paper on www.etsy.com.

So now its time to take that inspiration from the mood board and bring together furnishings and accessories. Updating and combining with current materials will give it that con-temporary look. For example, steer clear of wrought iron with this trend or you will end up with a Hacienda. Metals can be Brass, Copper, Rose Gold, any of the current favourites.

3: Collect natural handmade ceramics, terracotta and earthenware pots loving terracotta shades again after some years out of favour and leads the trend to the new Peach tones on their way for A/W 2018, see my notes below.

I have collated my board that hopefully this will inspire you to go on and research other options.

5: Moroccan style clear jewel colours and strong geometric patterns on your wall tiles will really make that impact. This panel is from a selection at www.firedearth.com. Looking for monochrome tiles with that pattern go to www.tilechoice.co.uk for a good selection.

Bringing the pattern onto the walls? Go monochrome to allow flexibility with colours on the soft furnishings. This paper from www. worldofwallpaper.com some good research will unearth a good range of geometric patterns.

6: You don’t need to add pattern look for texture. This traditional lilim fabric in a multi stripe would look fantastic as upholstery on furniture or footstools. This is from a section on ww.etsy.com The Fabric Bistro.

2 Monochrome Aztec Wallpaper/ Black and White Removable Wallpaper. For a much stronger pattern or for those 14

Well 2018 sees its return. Those warm blush pinks which have been making their way onto walls over the past 18 months have become warmer and peachier, and as I am all for celebrating a come-back it’s time to pull the crackers, light the sparklers and bring it in from the cold.

JUSTICE FOR RYAN AND OPENING BOUNDARIES ARE, ‘TACKLING KNIFE CRIME TOGETHER’ Family friend, Jason Connon who set up the Justice For Ryan campaign group said, “We want to create an inspiring and fun family day for the whole community. Ryan was a passionate footballer and we want to create a positive legacy in Ryan’s memory so that hopefully no other families have to suffer the devastating effects of losing a loved one to knife crime.

Working in partnership the charity Opening Boundaries and the Justice for Ryan group will be using the power of sport, in particular football, to organise an anti-knife crime community day on the 30th September 2018 to take place at Stourbridge Town Football Club. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the Justice For Ryan campaign and highlight how we can combat the growing issue of knife crime using sports as a positive diversionary.

Knife crime does not just affect one person. It affects whole families, friends, communities and beyond for the rest of their lives”.

Following the success of its #I Support Tackling Knife Crime event in May which raised £1000 for Birmingham Childrens Hospital, Opening Boundaries will now join forces with the Justice for Ryan group to bring the community together for the second time to say ‘NO’ to knife crime.

Farah Ahmed, Project Manager for Opening Boundaries added, “I am keen to demonstrate what we as a community can achieve when we come together using the power of sport which in turn helps to drive social change and allows us to live in a safer and more inclusive society. 34

Our News We hope the day will bring everyone together to say ‘No’ to any form of violence. We want to use sport as a positive diversionary which can engage with people of all races, genders and classes.

We acknowledge that knives are too often the weapon of choice, but we are working really hard with retailers, schools and partners to remove knives from the streets of the West Midlands.

In a month that marks the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth we can learn a lot from his inspirational words: ‘Sports has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way little else does.’

The community day will be held in memory of Ryan Passey. An aspiring young footballer whose life was tragically cut short as a result of knife crime. Family and friends of Ryan will be joined on the day by other families who have unfortunately been the victims of knife crime and lost loved ones.

His quote encapsulates our mission at Opening Boundaries and by teaming up with the Justice for Ryan group we can lead the way and show how we are Tackling Knife Crime together.”

A charity football game will kick off at 2pm where the Justice for Ryan Team will compete against a Wolves All star team. There will be a number of ex professional footballers turning out for both sides, which we hope will entertain the crowds.

Detective Superintendent Ian Parnell of West Midlands Police quoted: I am supportive of any community led initiative that seeks to prevent knife crime and the terrible impact it has on families and communities. The work of Opening Boundaries is key in offering diversionary activities for young people to focus on.”

The day will also consist of activities for the whole family, further details will be confirmed in the coming weeks. We would like to urge the whole community to get behind this campaign and show what can be achieved by Tackling Knife Crime Together.

Across the West Midlands there has been a recent increase in knife crime, ranging from possession offences at one end to murder at the other.

Our Travel

Take a break in Bournemouth by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist

Stroll sedately along the promenade beside the seven mile stretch of soft sandy beach and admire the view of the pier. And whilst the seagulls squawk and swoop overhead, take in the intoxicating smell of the briny. Welcome to Bournemouth, Dorset, on England’s southern coast.

Restaurant on the pier to take advantage of the calming views across the ocean. I sampled the delicious Moules Mariniere with onions, garlic, and a splash of white wine, and accompanied by a generous glass of Ponte Pinot Grigio 2017, it was the antidote. After a brisk walk along the pier, I made my way to the Oceanarium, which is only a stone’s throw from the pier entrance. The aquarium houses more than 300 different species including rare green sea turtles, brightly coloured clownfish, fierce piranhas with razor sharp teeth and sharks with callous expressions. Seeking a more pleasant encounter I headed to the otter enclosure to watch their playful and delightful antics and then I arrived at the Humbolt penguin enclosure just in time for the feeding session, which resulted in a squabble or two over a fish supper.

Recipient of the 2017 Best Travel Award for the UK’s Best Seaside Town, Bournemouth attracts more than five million visitors every year and there is much to explore. I started off with a wander along Bournemouth Pier, which has a fascinating history dating back to 1856 when a wooden jetty was completed. A wooden pier replaced the jetty five years later but this survived for only fifteen years as it was destroyed by a ferocious storm. In 1880 a new pier was opened, a bandstand and shelters were later added, and the pier was extended to a length of 1,000 feet. Due to corrosion, the pier was rebuilt in 1979 and today’s visitors are richly rewarded with modern attractions such as the RockReef, which features 25 climbing walls, an aerial obstacle course, Pier caves, a vertical slide, and a leap of faith jumping challenge. Or, for the very adventurous, there is a pier to shore zip wire. I watched a few courageous souls launch themselves from a platform 25 metres above the sea then ‘zip surf’ 250 metres above the waves and land on the sand. There was a spontaneous round of applause from the spectators but I found the very idea rather unsettling so I headed for the Key West

For my own fish supper I went to Harry Ramsden’s opposite the pier. Selecting an outside table, with a beach view, I savoured the fresh fish ‘n’ chips with mushy peas and a thirst quenching glass of raspberry lemonade. Harry Ramsden’s has been serving our national dish for 90 years and it’s sure to continue. Bournemouth offers a wide variety of hotels but for those keen to avoid time restrictions for meals and limited space, opting for a serviced apartment is just the ticket. I stayed in a spacious self contained, two bedroom apartment within the Exchange 36

emanating from an enormous variety of plants and shrubs filled the air and I reflected on the history of the Grade II listed gardens. In 1859 the owners of the land gave permission for the area to become a public pleasure ground and in 1872 the Upper, Central and Lower Gardens joined together to become one. In the 1920’s the pavilion, in the Lower Gardens, was built. Ornamental rock gardens and charming small waterfalls were installed and many of the trees and shrubs remain in place to this day. The Upper Gardens include tennis courts and I watched the action for a while and noted the water tower, which dates back to between 1883 and 1903. In 1992 the Upper Gardens were replanted to include meadow walks and ample seating areas where I watched the frisky squirrels going about their daily business.

Buildings located on Upper Hinton Road. The apartment is delightfully peaceful, light and airy, with modern furnishings, comfortable beds and a large kitchen, which featured every appliance including a fridge-freezer, oven, washing machine/dryer and a dish washer. The property is adjacent to St Peter’s Church, a grade I listed building, which is where Mary Shelley, author of the Gothic novel Frankenstein, is buried, and Bournemouth’s shops and attractions including the Pier and the Lower, Central and Upper Gardens, are all within walking distance. The verdant and beautiful gardens, which stretch from Bournemouth Pier, cover three glorious kilometres. I wandered along one of the paths as the mixture of floral scents

37

Our Travel Housed in an old auction house, which dates back to the 1920’s, the property has retained some striking features, including imposing marble pillars, glittering chandeliers, and an enormous room-sized Chubb safe, which is now an additional dining room. I ordered the succulent roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, and a glass of Châteauneuf du Pape, which were served with aplomb and the ‘live’ entertainment, which was a singer/guitarist covering some relaxing tunes created a ‘chilled’ atmosphere. Or, for a more formal affair, and the option of ‘alfresco dining’, head for Brasserie Blanc at the Marriott Highcliff Hotel on St Michael’s Road. I sampled the delicate flavours of the Malabar fish curry with toasted coconut, followed by the zesty lemon tart served with Normandy sour cream and as I admired the splendid vista across the ocean I held my cool glass of Chardonnay aloft in respect of Bournemouth’s famous residents Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and her esteemed husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. And as the sunshine faded and the clouds gathered I contemplated on his words:

Rieke in Hammock @MonkeyWorld For an unforgettable encounter with wildlife, Monkey World, located in Longthorns, Wareham, which is only 22 miles from Bournemouth, is a very special experience. This highly respected rescue centre for abused apes, founded in 1987 by the late Jim Cronin, provides sanctuary for more than 250 primates from around the world, including chimpanzees, orang-utans, gibbons, macaques, woolly monkeys, squirrel monkeys, marmosets, tamarins and lemurs.

‘I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers, From the seas and the streams, I bear light shade for the leaves when laid, In their noon-day dreams’.

The successful television series Monkey Business, which premiered in 1998, focused on Jim Cronin and his wife Alison, travelling around the world, rescuing primates from appalling situations and transporting them to Monkey World where they now live in comfort and safety and in the company of other members of their species. Monkey Life, a follow-on series was created in 2006 and continues to this day. Be sure to attend the keeper’s talks, particularly the spider monkey’s, capuchins and stump-tailed macaques and don’t miss the chimpanzees feeding session. For my own dining experience I visited Banque and Bohem, located on Poole Hill, a short walk from the centre of Bounemouth.

Our Wedding

Our fashion writer Michelle and her new husband Chris got married in May at the beautiful Avoncroft Museum in Bromsgrove. It is a great venue for a large wedding as it has huge grounds (19 acres of Worcestershire countryside), old buildings and historic treasures from over 700 years of Midlands history. It was a beautiful sunny day and the wedding was full of fun! Champagne flowed, pizzas flew off the pizza truck, music played, people danced, laughed and hugged. There was even a train to ride! Michelle wore a timeless dress from the designer Claire Pettibone and Chris wore a Reiss Suit. The photos were taken by the incredible documentary photographer Russell How.

Why I Love My Job Susan fashions a new career for herself after graduating from uni at 65 “It was a little daunting, to know I would be studying alongside people who had only just left school, but I soon found out I had nothing at all to worry about. My course-mates didn’t treat me any differently, we were all in it together and we’d pop off to the canteen with each other, and became close.”

Grandmother Susan Campbell has set her sights on a new career in fashion after graduating from university, aged 65. At a time when most would be adjusting to a leisurely life of retirement, the pensioner has no intention of putting her feet up, and is instead pursuing a job in the industry.

Susan also held her own when it came to the work, being just one of 11 students selected to showcase their final year collections on the catwalk at Graduate Fashion Week in Shoreditch, the culture capital of London.

“University was amazing, I had so much fun and the course was fascinating, allowing me to really run with my creative ideas,” said Susan, who spent two years studying Textiles for Fashion at the University of Northampton.

Indeed, one of her designs – a Peaky Blindersinspired outfit – drew plenty of praise on social media and was even featured on local BBC news.

“At first, I was like a rabbit in the headlights, adjusting to being on campus and getting used to learning at degree level, and of course, being the oldest person on the course,” she added.

“Just a few years ago I would never have 54

Our Jobs Susan has always had a creative side, but had never pursued her passion professionally, instead undertaking a variety of admin roles throughout her working life. “Although I enjoyed my jobs, I had always wanted to be more creative, and I remember I used to rush home from work and make clothes when I was younger,” said Susan. When her children, Laura and Tom, were small, Susan attended evening classes at college, where she tried her hand at art and design, but then put her creative side on hold until she was 50. “I enrolled on a botanical illustration course and loved it – I remember thinking ‘at last, I know what I want to do with myself, I want to be creative’,” she said. She then went on to study an AS-Level in textiles at Leicester College, before completing a one-year HND course in fashion and textiles at Warwickshire & Hinckley College. From there, Susan progressed to the University of Northampton in 2016.

dreamed that I would get the opportunity to design and make my own collection, and then see models wearing it on the catwalk,” said Susan. “It was an incredible experience and I loved every minute of the show and it’s given me a taste of what I want to do next, and that’s to work in the fashion industry.”

The University’s Head of Fashion, Dr Julie King, said: “Susan is proof that age is no barrier and that fashion is for everyone. We are excited to see what the future holds for her and are sure she will inspire others to pursue their dreams.”

Susan, who comes from Countesthorpe, near Leicester, and is married to Duncan and has two grown-up children and a second grandchild on the way, is now contemplating life, postgraduation. She said: “I’d like to work for a fashion company and get a feel of the industry. I don’t want to just stop now I’ve graduated. I might be 65, which is when most people are settling into retirement, but I want another crack at a more creative career.” 55

Nick and Royston's Diary Birchfield Annual Summer Ball A regular date in Nick & Royston`s Diary is The Birchfield Summer Ball. Organized by friends Jade Colton and Claire Norton, this year`s theme was Hollywood Movies. The ladies of Birchfield know how to organise a party and the evening was the perfect blend of fun and entertainment. The marque was beautifully decorated, with flowers from Peony and the three-course dinner was delicious. A tremendous evening,in great company and Royston strutting his stuff on the dance floor, it ended up a very late night!!!!

Launch of Parea in Alderley Edge. Close friend Chantelle Heskey, wife of Footballer Emille Heskey, have opened their new Bar and Restaurant Parea, in Alderley Edge. The Cheshire set were out in force for the floral themed opening party. Nick and Royston arrived with Dawn and Ashley Ward and were joined by their daughters Taylor and Darby. Other guests included Holly Oaks and love Island celebs, sports personalities and a host of The Real Housewives of Cheshire stars Tanya Bardsley, Nermina Pieters-Mekic and former show star Leanne Brown. Music included a live DJ set from All Saints singer Melanie Blatt, where she brought the house down. A must visit venue, whenever they are in Cheshire.

Nick Bretnall`s 60th Birthday Party. To celebrate this special event Yvette Bretnall arranged a 60th birthday bash in the South of France. Nick and Royston flew down for a long weekend and stayed at the exclusive resort of St Tropez. One hundred and twenty close friends and family were invited to join Nick and Yvette for a private beach party. The day was filled with fantastic bands, extraordinary entertainers and after sumptuous lunch, everyone danced the afternoon away and partied into the night. To send the weekend in one of the most beautiful places in the world, with luxury boutiques and with fabulous friends, was the perfect break. Happy Birthday Nick!!!

Pretty Muddy Charity Run. When Royston was approached by the Housewives of Cheshire to join them in Manchester`s Pretty Muddy 5k Cancer Charity run, well how could he refuse!!!The event was held at Tatton Park in aid of Breast Cancer and he joined a host of stars and hundreds of women, to raise money for this incredible cause. Little did he realise, what costume he would be asked to wear, but always up for a laugh, he was big Royston carrying a little Royston!!! The ladies were dressed in pink catsuits, looking incredibly glamorous before the race, however after a gruelling muddy 5k obstacle course, carrying inflatable boobs, they got truly down and dirty on the course. After powering through the challenges, they crossed the finishing line together, in great spirits and with Royston there to cheer them on! 57

PUT SOME SPARKLE IN YOUR SMILE. If you don’t feel confident smiling, if you have trouble chewing your food, or if you would simply like to look better the experienced team at Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic can help. Have you perfected your photo smile? Sadly, there are those who’ve trained themselves never to smile because they have decided that an unguarded laugh out loud smile does not show them at their best. They have learned to override their natural smile for fear of exposing their teeth and other signs of poor dental health. Once upon a time if you hadn’t had your teeth fixed by your teens then you never did. As an adult it was simply something you didn’t do. Now realising the physical, psychological and social benefits of showing a bright, happy smile, and the general acceptance that this can be achieved at any age, more and more of us are considering a smile makeover. Amit Pabari, owner and principal at Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic realised early on that for many, a visit to the dentist conjured up memories of men in white coats, the sound of drills and anxious waiting rooms. In order to provide the very best care, provide the very best experience and achieve the very best results, he needed to counter ‘the fear barrier’ and create a clinic that was calm and inviting, while also private, discreet and reassuring. Amit and his highly trained and accredited team offer full range of dental solutions including restorative and cosmetic aesthetic treatments to patients across the West Midlands. The practice can even help denture wearers directly via the in-house fully qualified Clinical Dental Technician

who has many years’ experience designing, producing and repairing dentures. The result is a friendly, modern clinic that is focused on making you feel good from the moment you step over the threshold to the aftercare you receive. “Whether it’s general medicine, or dentistry, so much depends on the environment in which you are treated and the attitude of those around you” says Amit. The teams approach seems to be working – they’re renowned locally for clinical excellence and exceptional service and have built a highly appreciative and loyal customer base. And it’s clear to see why; the team are invested and derive immense amounts of satisfaction from the work they do. “One of the most important things at Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic is the customer service that we provide, it has to be of a high standard”. Concludes Amit “To benefit the patients, we are continually looking at ways of how we can improve the service that we provide.

How to Repair Your Post Summer Skin During the summer, your skin can take a beating from overexposure to the sun, saltwater and chlorine. Not to mention all those BBQ’s and glasses of Prosecco that also affects your skin. Leaving your skin dehydrated and sun damaged.

During the summer, a foam or gel cleanser might suit your skin. However, in the Autumn you may find these too drying. For drier or mature skins, you could swap to a cream or oil-based cleanser.

Add In A Serum

During the Autumn, our skin changes as it tries to recover from damage caused during the summer months and prepares for the colder temperatures.

Adding a serum into your daily skin care is an absolute must. Serums have smaller molecules that enable the ingredients to penetrate deep into the skin. Look for serums that contain Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C.

The tell-tale signs of damage are redness, pigmentation, roughness and a general lacklustre appearance. And for those with oilier skins, more sweating can mean clogged pores and breakouts.

Increase Moisture When the cold weather hits, it’s essential to keep your skin well hydrated. This could mean upgrading your usual moisturiser or adding in a richer night cream.

It’s essential to repair and protect your skin as we move out of summer and into the colder months. Here are our top tips on how to restore your skin.

Protect Your Skin Just cause its cold or wet doesn’t mean your skin is safe from damage from the sun’s rays. It’s a fact that 85% of ageing is caused by the sun! Using sun protection is a year-round job and should be an essential part of your daily skincare routine. Your sunscreen should be at least SPF 30 +

Exfoliation Is Key Regular exfoliation is important to help achieve healthy glowing skin. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and increase cellular regeneration, resulting in a brighter, smoother complexion.

Nourish Your Skin from Within

We recommend exfoliating twice a week at home with a gentle face scrub or using a daily cleanser that contains gentle fruit acids like papaya or mild AHAs like Glycolic and Mandelic acids.

To nourish your skin, your diet should include plenty of healthy fats; lots of vegetables and protein-rich foods. Plus, you should stay well hydrated by drinking at least 2 litres of water every day to support every function in your body.

Autumn is the perfect time to book professional treatments such as Skin Peels. They can produce fantastic results with minimal recovery time.

For more information on how to achieve healthy glowing skin, visit The Body Clinic. www.thebodyclinic.uk.com or give us a call on 01562 265018

Transform into the new you! Transforming Me is a professional service for professional people who want to mentally strengthen themselves. It gives YOU the confidence to succeed at work and in your personal life by achieving a lasting feeling of being almost bullet proof to stress related illness, underlying anxiety and personal issues.

Tracy Roberts Rapid Transformational Therapist

the level of our awareness for most of our lives. Research has demonstrated these subconscious programs can affect our thought patterns, behaviours and even damage our health. The effects of limiting beliefs, trauma, repressed emotions and unresolved issues in our systems can result in multiple problems, such as: toxic levels of inner tension, a buildup of stress hormones, increased sensitivity to stress, hyperactivity of the nervous system, chronic pain, anxiety, obsessive thought patterns, depression, chronic fatigue, lowered immune system and autonomic nervous system dysregulation.

As a qualified Rapid Transformational Therapist (RTT) I give people freedom from unhelpful thinking styles and help them let go of unhappy memories. RTT works to overcome fears and phobias and mentally kick start the body’s processes to support physical healing. RTT also works to prevent over or under eating, deal with ingrained habits like nail biting, excessive alcohol and really does move you away from pain and rapidly into personal transformation.

Transforming me is equipped with an array of tools and techniques for accessing subconscious blockages and helping you find your way to freedom. It helps YOU identify the root cause of what is holding you back from achieving optimal health and a satisfying happy life.

Transforming Me performs the therapeutic approach of RTT and utilizes hypnotherapy combined with principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and psychotherapy. It is a unique and distinctive approach that addresses issues on a deep level by accessing the subconscious mind and internal programming that is the driver behind destructive behaviours, limiting beliefs and toxic thought processes.

RTT was developed by famed British therapist, Marisa Peer. Marisa originated this unique and effective therapy technique over her 30 years of successful clinical practice. Marisa was voted Britain's #1 Therapist and has worked with Olympic athletes, celebrities and top entrepreneurs. Marisa is currently developing an RTT program for British schools and a corresponding anti-bullying campaign.

Transforming Me understands that many people try to change their lives through meditation, visualizations, positive self-talk and other relaxation style methods only to find themselves frustrated and continually falling back into old self-destructive patterns. Whilst these are wonderful and beneficial life practices, they often fail to address and eliminate underlying subconscious programming that has been playing beneath

RTT is endorsed by the General Hypnotherapy Register, the Complementary and Natural Health Care Council, the National and International Council of Psychotherapists, the American Board of Hypnotherapy and the International Association of Complementary Therapists. 72

Aim high and don’t be put off by the negative discouragement of others. Maybe they are just jealous of the rapid progress you are making. Just keep going and the sky really is the limit.

It’s your good nature and natural wit that is liable to make you very popular and this will help you to charm the birds off the trees and therefore get what you want out of most situations.

Life may become something of a race for you, but at least this means that you will find yourself at the top of the pile. There really is nothing that you cannot achieve. Get on with the job in hand and you really can’t go wrong.

Rely upon your own judgement as others seem to want you to jump on their bandwagon. You are a born leader so you really do not have to form alliances with anyone. It’s time to enjoy blazing your own trail.

Our Pets Gardens

Hop to It! See if you qualify for a FREE Health Check for your Rabbit or Guinea Pig* with Blacks Vets

By Kate Slack RVN, Head of Nursing, Blacks Vets

For many children, rabbits and guinea pigs enjoy treasured ‘first pet’ status, but did you know that ownership amongst adults is also gaining in popularity? Here at Blacks, we are certainly seeing an increase in rabbit and guinea pig patients coming through the door and we knew that we’d like to offer a service tailored perfectly to meet their needs.

Companionship

Step forward, ‘Hop to It!’ Our new initiative to help rabbit and guinea pig owners understand more about their pets and get the most from their veterinary practice. Many of our team are proud rabbit and guinea pig owners and bring a wealth of experience to caring for our small furry friends. Hop to It aims to share knowledge, encourage questions and promote excellent standards of care. To celebrate, we are offering rabbit and guinea pig patients that are not currently registered with a Blacks Vets practice, a FREE HEALTH CHECK* at one of our afternoon clinics. See our Terms and Conditions at the end of this article to apply.

With rabbits, mixed sex pairings usually make for the most harmonious match though same sex pairings can sometimes work. Both sexes should be neutered irrespective of pairing combination, as an un-castrated male may still try to mount his female mate leading to fighting and stress for both animals. An unspayed female may be at risk of early death from uterine cancer.

In the meantime, if you’re thinking about welcoming a rabbit or guinea pig to your home, here are some top tips to consider:

When it comes to housing, a hutch alone will not provide adequate space to keep your pet happy and healthy. Rabbits and guinea pigs need a minimum of 10ft x 6ft x 3ft high (3m x 2m x 1m) of space to play and exercise in. However, a hutch can make up part of your pet’s habitat as a safe space to sleep and retreat to. Hutches should have enough room for your pet to make at least 3 hops and also be able to lie stretched out. Make sure that your run has plenty of toys to play with together with other sheltered areas for protection.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are sociable creatures that need companions to be happy. Companions should be from their own species, as mixed species pairing is not usually successful.

Making a good match

Guinea Pigs tend to be happier in same sex pairings though a mixed sex pairing can work if both male and female are neutered.

Housing. Why a hutch isn’t enough!

Neutering Neutering rabbits and guinea pigs is vital for a long and healthy life. Pets that are not neutered run the risk of disease and behavioural problems, such as aggression. Talk to one of our friendly team about the best time to neuter your pet and what the procedure will involve. 82

knowledgeable team for further information.

Rabbits and guinea pigs can live indoors or outdoors as long as their needs are met. Outdoor pets should be shielded from weather extremes and brought inside during periods of heat and cold. They must be protected from predators with outdoor runs made of heavy-gauge mesh with secure bolts. Indoor pets also need their own dedicated space and your home must be made safe with electrical wires and poisonous house plants kept out of the way.

Preventative healthcare For rabbits, vaccinations are a vital part of maintaining your pet’s health. Make sure your rabbit is inoculated against Myxomatosis and VHD. Rabbits are also at risk of developing Flystrike, a nasty condition that can prove fatal if not treated quickly. Thankfully, preventative 140mmx106mm that OLM PRINT.pdf 1 treatmentBlacks is PSPavailable minimizes the chance of an attack. Ask one of our

Talbots target expansion after £1m IT investment (L-R) Ian Bond (Talbots Law) and Richard Lane (EBC Group) A leading West Midlands legal services provider is investing over £1m in state-of-theart IT infrastructure as part of expansion plans to hit £12m fees in 2018.

“The private cloud offers more flexibility for our staff and the opportunity for them to work across any of our offices in Codsall, Dudley, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Kidderminster and Wolverhampton, not to mention when on-site with companies or during time in court.”

Talbots Law, which employs over 200 people at six offices across the region, has worked with EBC Group to complete the installation of a new private cloud accessed Virtual Desk Interface (VDI) that will deliver a number of customer service improvements.

She continued: “We have also upgraded every computer in the business and implemented dual screens to make finding information quicker. Staying ahead of the competition when it comes to technology is crucial to our growth plans that will hopefully see us increase fees from £11m to £12m this year."

The system provides a greater level of security, the opportunity to handle more data faster and enhanced flexibility for staff to hot-desk between offices and to work remotely.

“The new system will also allow us to centralise our expanding Wyre Forest operation into our recently refurbished Kidderminster office.”

There has also been a software upgrade on the phone system and new mobile app that will dramatically boost call handing, enhancing the customer experience in the process.

Richard Lane, Group Managing Director at EBC Group, concluded: “We have worked with Talbots Law for 20 years, which is testament to our ability to provide all their ICT services as a one stop shop."

“Our ambition is to become the legal provider of choice for the Black Country and wider Midlands and this investment – the largest we have ever made in IT – will make us more efficient and deliver even better levels of service to our growing client base,” explained Mary Mocklow, Chief Executive at Talbots Law.

Why you should hate some of your investments I always hate some of the investments in our portfolios at different points in time, but I accept this as a good thing! It is impossible to pick an entire portfolio of winning investments over every timeframe, so creating a portfolio of well “diversified” or in other words, varied investments, makes sense. As the saying goes, ‘Never put all your eggs in one basket!’

Anita Gatehouse Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

be formulated with you in mind with real emphasis placed on your personal risk tolerance. It is not sufficient to build the portfolio that you should have, but the one you will stick with. Too much (or too little) risk will cause emotional swings that may tempt you to get in or get out at precisely the wrong time. Understanding the reasons for an investment’s inclusion in your portfolio and therefore why at times it will not do so well, is key to the success of your long-term financial plan.

Not all investments perform well at the same time as they are affected differently by the same events, for example, inflation rises, exchange rate movements, interest rate changes et cetera. One of the key disciplines is to hold some investments that are “uncorrelated” to each other. In other words, investments that generally do not move in the same direction at the same time, or that are affected by economic events in the same way. Diversification enables us to create a portfolio where the combined risk of the constituent parts is lower than that of the individual holdings.

I don’t have a crystal ball, but I’m pretty sure that the investments I hate today will be investments I will love in the future. Please be aware that before making any financial decision based on this article you should take advice to ensure any action you take is appropriate for your circumstances. If you have a portfolio of £100,000 or above and are unsure of your investment strategy you can book a free 30 minute meeting. Just telephone Jo on 01562 745730 to book an appointment.

For example, in times of recession, bond investments tend to fare better when compared to stock market investments but conversely in times of good economic growth, stock market investments tend to do well.

Why not have a look at what our clients say about us on our website: www.cre8wm.co.uk

NISSAN X-TRAIL

Navigation screen and display was one of the best that I have seen and a run recently through Shropshire it was refreshing to see the blue of the River Severn adjacent to the road I was travelling on, the graphics were marvellous.

When a manufacturer claims that its SUV is the worlds best selling with over 3.7 million sold since it first appeared on the marketplace in 2000, it is difficult to argue that the car is anything other than a huge success, writes Bob Hickman.

The 1600cc petrol engine, produced marginally over 120ps sufficient to give a top speed, where legal of course, of 124mph and Nissan claim a combined fuel figure of 44mpg, my computer suggested that I had achieved 39mpg. Co emission is on the high side at 149.

The new 2018 version of Nissan’s X-Trail has been modified in respect of the engineering, and technology, also a slight stylish exercise gives it a more refreshing up to date look. My particular test vehicle was the Tekna version. This enhances the vehicle with leather trim and full electric adjustment for the driver’s seat this helps to get a comfortable driving position and with the X-Trail being an SUV vehicle then the driving position and all round visibility is excellent.

The vehicle drove quite smoothly and was responsive and the 6-speed manual gearbox was a pleasure, all the gear ratios were useable, including 6th gear around town. My particular derivative had the option to reveal a set of extra seats in the boot thus making the X-Trail a 7-seater. Albeit the rear most seats were really only suitable for small children.

From a driving perspective I liked the dashboard layout, clear, simple, easy to understand and uncomplicated. The Satellite 98
