Ninety years

of excellent customer service With roots that stretch back four generations, Pargeters is a family run furniture business with a difference. Currently managed by directors, John Pargeter and Miles Pargeter, following the retirement of David Pargeter in August 2016, the company has been a mainstay landmark in Stourbridge since 1926. Supplying quality furniture and providing exceptional customer service has always been the focus of the business and this is no different today. A Change in direction has taken place over the last five years, which has seen the store focusing on being and upholstery specialist and so it no longer sells bedroom furniture, curtains and carpets. Now instead, there is a brand new department that specialises in Sherborne lift and rise beds, reclining chairs – which are all exempt from VAT – as well as sofas to match. With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit – especially right now as March sees the start of Pargeters’ Spring Sale, with huge discounts on all leading brands. Customers at Pargeters’ are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains: “Sometimes an established business and single store furniture shop can be deemed to be more expensive to buy from than larger group stores.. But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop Pargeters, very often we are cheaper and will price match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible prices combined with the highest standard of customer service” Thanks to Pargeters’ competitive pricing, it’s clear that you’ll no longer have to accept that good customer service has to be sacrificed in exchange for low prices. The company even offers free delivery within a 50 mile radius and will also take your old items away free of charge. Visit Pargeters’ showroom today to enjoy a legacy of 90 years’ worth of fine customer service.

That Spring Hygge feeling By - Jane de Weijer, Make Space Interiors Hi and welcome to the Spring season Home Interiors column, keeping you bang up to date with current 2017 ideas and trends. As an Interior Designer I will be looking at how, with a bit of tweaking, you can breathe fresh ideas into your home using the current trends. I will be creating that mood board for this season’s wish list and passing on trend watch tips for the season. In the shops, on-line, there is so much out there now, its exciting, and every taste is being catered for whatever your style, from Scandi Cool to traditional English Country checks and weaves, its all there. I want to help you navigate through all thats on offer and to create the home that reflects you.

It’s been about enjoying those winter months where we ‘batten down the hatches’ and stay warm and indoors, lighting the candles, watching the box sets and creating that feel good atmosphere.

Pronunciation: [Hoo-gah] Hygge is two sounds. To make the first sound, you must put your mouth in position to whistle and blow a bit while making a short, clipped ‘hoo’ sound. End with a short ‘gah’ (‘g’ as in ‘gift’, and ‘ah’ as in the ‘u’ sound in ‘umbrella’). Here we go: Hygge. Lena Bentsen – Danish Life Designer

it’s easy to think that now the spring is coming, with those Xmas books back on the shelf somewhere, that the Hygge spirit is going on the back burner again until the autumn rolls on in, well not so.

Raise your nordic candle if you have heard of Hygge?

This month I want to make sure that we bring that Hygge spirit right into our spring and summer homes.

Hygge, the Danish word that can’t be translated directly into any other language but describes the cosiness, warmth and the simple things in life that help to create a home, came right into our own homes over the Autumn /Winter 2016 season.

So lets get Danish. Rocking that Spring Hygge.

Hygge is about creating a lifestyle. The Danes are officially the happiest nation on earth and we have all been encouraged to adopt their approach to home living.

Spring is the time of new shoots, daffodils, longer days … and time to organise a Hygge spring clean.

Your Home

Hygge means clean and simple. Clear the decks. A few months ago we were decking the hall but now its time to look outside. It doesn’t mean throwing everything out into the wheelie bins, just a simple rearranging of the room and your accessories will give that fresh perspective.

Hygge means the simple things in life so it’s handmade, it’s crafted candles, copper and brass to add warmth, and it’s warm textures, knitted throws, soft velvets and natural finishes. Warm soft light creates the Hygge mood. Think simple and homespun and you are there.

I have put together my Hygge mood board for spring. Web-sites are a good starting place for inspiration but I highly recommend getting out into the local shops and onto the High Street as well. Once you have your mood board in place it becomes so much easier to focus on the elements that you will need to create your room.

Tip: If you can, and you haven’t done already, download the Pinterest APP, uk.pinterest.com. This will let you ‘pinboard’ all those images that you love so that you have an on-line personal mood board accessible at all times.

4: Plants, greenery, a must for the spring home. Bring them in. I love these Knossos hand painted pots in Delft Blue, www.nest.co.uk, in which to grow those Dutch tulips.

1: Mohair throws for spring bring some fresh colours in to the room. Norma Copenhagen Pastel green throw, www.nest.co.uk. Check them out for this golden woven basket too.

5: Looking to invest in storage after the spring clean? This cabinet combines natural wood and that delicate added detail on the drawer fronts. Sahora chest of drawers www.swooneditions. com.

2: A cosy sheepskin throw over the back of the chair gives that instant Danish vibe. There are some great ideas on www.theswedishhorse. com website including this cute footstool, just choose your colour !

6: Calm is the buzzword and this pendant lamp adds to the simplicity that is key to the spring Hygge room. Acorn Pendant, www.nest.co.uk.

3: Very chunky knits add that warmth. The Welcome Throw in spring pastel pink can be found on www.laurenastondesigns.com. If you can knit now is the time to showcase your skills. Hygge is all about homemade.

7: It can’t be a Hygge board without candles. ETSY.com was my go-to for this copper wire candle bowl. This will give that Hygge glow. LondonGardenTrading on ETSY.com

Spring Trend Watch: Go Green

1. Investing in a new sofa? Feeling adventurous?

The colour of Spring is top of the agenda for Designers this year.

Go for green, be bold, green velvet is the cover of the season. Or you can invest in a footstool, statement chair, or just pile on the cushions. Velvet is the textile for 2017 and be prepared to see it in the High Street. Invest in accessories and enjoy those jewel colours.

Greenery, the colour for 2017, launched by the designers trend predictor Pantone, www. pantone.com, is a strong and vibrant colour that will appear on furniture, accessories and textiles over the coming year. This is a strong colour but it really defines a pallet of greens that are currently coming into the latest rooms and homes. Fresh, exciting and easy to adapt.

2: Penfold footstool in Fern. www.swooneditions. com

Colour and texture are the new neutrals and 2017 will see bold adventures into rich colours being used to decorate and enhance our rooms.

3: Scott 3 seat sofa. www.made.com

Three ways to go green

To give your room that eclectic edge that defines current Interior Design trends take a look at some of the new wall coverings in the books this season. I love this new paper by Sanderson. Their Woodland Toile wallpaper incorporates the current trend for natural decorative patterns

Now whether you love the colour green and embrace it wholeheartedly or are more cautious and prefer to dabble here are some ideas for including green in your 2017 scheme.

and shades. This is a really usable design in any room and I recommend taking a look at the range www.sanderson-uk.com.

Look at the Valspar paint range also, available at B&Q.. Gold velvet cushions complete the scheme along with vintage mirrors and a cactus in a pot, because I like them! Go eclectic this season.

I have added warm neutral paint shades by Farrow and Ball to compliment the scheme, www.farrowandball.co.uk.

If you are thinking of decorating please look at the current range of wallpapers now on offer, there are some fantastic designs out there. Due to the popularity of the painted ‘feature wall’ wallpaper has been neglected for far too long. So before you reach for the shade card go and have a look at the books.

I am loving the new kitchen floor specified for a recent project in progress. This tile from Fired Earth takes detail onto the floor and contrasts with the contemporary kitchen units. With a palette of warm white, grey, and marble sills we have created a French style kitchen with contemporary lines. By keeping all finishes simple and the pattern on the floor, the feeling of space in the kitchen has been enhanced. Industrial style light fittings and a custom made marble shelf compliment the theme.

Go for glass The current trend includes displaying artefacts, candles, collections under glass domes, its all about collections. Now is the time to shine with the eclectic and the unusual.

Let there be light. New light, new room and a new light fitting or lampshade makes that impact. I love these simple glass shades and either on their own or combined with decorative lightbulbs, as shown, they will give that instant update. How many actors does it take to change a light bulb? …Only one, they don’t like to share the spotlight. Both functional and attractive, spotlights are becoming increasingly popular in our homes as they are unobtrusive but still look the part. Typically considered for a contemporary layout, they work just as brilliantly in a traditional setting too. In this editorial, we’ll look at different ways to use spotlights and why they are such a brilliant, lighting piece in your home.

are so unobtrusive and fit perfectly into your home, with the right planning and layout. They can be placed just about anywhere to create a dramatic effect, from your ceiling, walls, under your cabinets, going along the skirting, on the floor, on your drive, on stairs, in shelves, cupboards, bookcases, the list is endless. They’re aesthetically pleasing and add a lot of depth, which can give your room a new lease of life. Don’t be fooled by this modern technology though, they look just as fabulous in period homes!

Spotlights tick all the boxes when versatility is concerned. Used for ambience, task, and accent lighting, you can place spotlights just about anywhere in your home.

Single Spotlights: Simple, small, and stylish, single spotlight fittings can be mounted on both the ceiling or wall. They’re extremely handy as they will provide light where it is needed. They make great lights for using over a bed for reading, highlighting a particular feature or ornament within the room, such as on top of a picture, or to provide light in an alcove.

Track/Cable Spotlights: Better suited for a contemporary setting, track lighting will look right at home in any room at home. The modern concept is quite easy to get your head round, it’s simply a spotlight fitted to a track, in which you can move it a long or pivot the head to direct the light in any way you want. We talked before about hanging spotlights over decorative wall features; with a track, you can position it opposite, giving you the art gallery feel. Fitting a track all around your ceiling gives you both ambience and accent lighting, your room is illuminated but the light is beaming where you want it to.

Multiple Spotlights: A very self-explanatory name, multiple spotlights are fitted to a ceiling plate, bar, or track. They’re very practical as you can swivel the light in numerous directions, letting a distinct pool of light onto the surface below, all from one fitting. Just like single spotlights, these pivoting geniuses are a lot safer than you would think. Their gleam can be directed further away than where you initially locate them, rather than fitting them up-close by ovens or showers. Also, by positioning spotlights correctly, you can look at computer and television screens without receiving a glare, which prevents the risk of eye strain.

Recessed Spotlights: The most versatile of them all. Recessed lights

Projects from PAINT IT by Peta Green of Paint It Pine to Perfect.......... The Brief Peta received an enquiry to paint fitted pine wardrobes, and the surrounding bedroom furniture which included a Dressing Table and Stool and a Blanket box. The customer wanted to bring it bang up to date to fit into her decor which she had taken from a magazine advert for a fitted bedroom company. Peta’s brief was to open up the room which appeared dark with all the old pine making the bedroom appear very dark.

AFTER If you would like speak to Peta about your painting requirements contact her on 01952 670805 to arrange a FREE of CHARGE home consultation, or visit www.paintitfurniture. com to send an enquiry.

BEFORE

The Solution! When Peta arranged to meet the customer, Peta had discussed the requirements and was able to provide images of work done previously on with other pine bedroom furniture, dining room table and chairs which helped the customer visualise the transformation. Using their 7 coat paint system, The decision made was to paint the wardrobes and furniture in an off white (Wedding Shawl) and change the door and drawer pulls to a luxurious crystal. The overall look had totally transformed the bedroom, giving light and warmth a perfect result. 22

Your Property

How much is my house worth? How an estate agent values a property can seem like a mystery to some, it’s almost like they have a sixth sense, however, it is not that mystical. Estate agents and valuers use a variety of tools to determine the value of a property, but generally they all rely on previous examples of similar properties’ and what they sold for. But can this precedent be a reliable indicator of what a future buyer is willing to pay for home they desire?

they can simple move into – no fuss. How unique is the property? Is it a mishmash of extension upon extension being added to it over the years, so much so you cannot recognize the original house or is it unique because it is a Grade I listed building with outstanding architecture and historical importance? Does it appeal? Is it the dream family house they have been looking for? Does it tick all of the boxes? A outside sauna and jacuzzi may have not been on the list but it may have closed the sale for you, mum and dad can certainly see themselves in there with a glass of fizz after a hard day at work! They are certainly leading with their hearts here and not their heads.

These days a home owner may already have an idea in their heads of what their property is worth. Technology savvy home owners turn online to online portals such as Rightmove or nethouseprices to get a rough idea of what has sold in their area and for how much. In fact, this internet search may even be the reason you came across this blog.

What does the competition look like? Have they seen anything else that comes close to your home for the same money? What else is on the market for this price? Ask yourself honestly what does the competition look like and is it anything like your home?

This is all well and good and usually there is plenty of recent house sales that show the ups and downs of the local housing market. We have all heard that ‘recently renovated’ house command top dollar (or pound) whereas doer upers are at the bottom end. However, if the last sale price that comes close to the style of house was more than 4-5 years ago and it’s had all sorts of luxury décor, furnishings, extravagate kitchen and bathroom, orangery and even an outside sauna and jacuzzi adding, how on earth can you determine the value?

So how unique do you think your home is? Are you looking to sell? You may appreciate some of our straight talking, good advice on your home saleability – if this is you, get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. For the majority of you lovely readers who consider you home more ‘normal’ and who don’t the time to trawl the internet looking at sold prices we have made this easy for you. All you have to do is click on this online valuation link, answer a few questions and voila as if by magic a price range and rough guide to the value of your home appears.

At the end of the day there are four main questions that buyers will consider when weighing up the value of your home. Can they afford it? Who your house appeals to will determine this. For example a London buyer is likely to be able to afford a higher price than a local, but if the home is unsuitable for a contemporary buyer and needs updating a city slicker may well overlook it and favor a property

Deep & Meaningful - Writing your own Wedding Vows

Getting married is one of the most emotional things that will happen to you in your life time. For both you and your partner, declaring your love for each other publically in front your nearest and dearest is a momentous occasion and one that you will not undertake lightly.

the modern era or indeed their personality or lifestyle. ‘Till death do us part” is a nice sentiment but a tad dreary on such a beautiful and romantic day. Writing your own vows gives you the chance to enter into your marriage contact under your terms so to speak and set the tone for “happily ever after”!

It is no surprise therefore, that many couples are choosing to write their own wedding vows as they feel that the standard text doesn’t quite grasp the full extent of the emotion or reflect

So how do you set about writing your own vows?

52

Your Wedding Get Inspired

Be warned, you will need to put thought and effort into writing your own vows so start early and plan well. You will need to dedicate time to this task so you can capture the essence of what you want to say in an eloquent way. You also want to be confident with your delivery on the day so spending time planning, researching and practicing these important phrases will mean that the words you will say will flow comfortably and be heartfelt.

If you have made the decision to write your own vows then you probably are already inspired, but reading existing vows both modern and traditional will get your creative juices flowing and help determine the sort of language and phrases you want to use. Even if you want to steer away from religion or tradition, reading vows of this kind will help you get a feel for format. You may read something that really resonates with the way you feel and enables you to put into words the promises you hope to make in your vows. Use the internet and bridal magazines to familiarise yourself with wedding vocabulary. Why not find inspiration from your favourite romantic novel or love song. Seeking inspiration from these sources will shape your vows lyrically and poetically and ensure you create a personal message.

The first thing to do is discuss in detail with your betrothed what you are trying to achieve. Be open and honest with your fiancé and share your thoughts on how you want the ceremony to unfold. Are you thinking of light-hearted and simplistic? Keeping it upbeat and modern or more heart-melting and romantic? Will you be writing them together or surprising one another on the wedding day? If you are going down this route it is probably best to appoint a trusted friend who will look at each of your vows so that they are similar in style and following the theme that you have chosen.

Inspiration may be closer than you think. Why not look to your partner and relationship for ideas? Look back on your time together and think about what made you fall in love with them? Why did you want to marry them and how do you see your future together. These simple answers will almost definitely give you the basic structure of the vows which you can embellish. They are also the things about your relationship that are unique and putting them into your vows will make them unlike any others.

Once you have got a clear understanding of the style that you both want your vows to follow you can start to create a framework that you can build the ceremony around.

Promises Promises Making commitments and promises is at the core of what vows are all about, so start to think about the commitments you want to enter into with your loved one. Think about long term pledges such as love and support through thick and thin, but also personalise your vows with little promises that show you know your partner’s needs and wants such as ‘I promise to always bring you a cup of tea in the morning” or “ I promise to let you eat half my dessert”. This way you have touched on the core values of marriage and also offered little personal love notes.

Your Wedding Get Writing

Practise Makes Perfect

If you have heeded the advice above then you will have ideas and notes to hand of the style of vows you want to write and the type of promises you want to make so now you can start writing. Get all your thoughts down on paper in a first draft. From there you can start to edit the vows taking care to avoid lengthy sentences and repetition. Aim for flowing phrases that best communicate what you want to say. Don’t expect to get it right at first, in fact, it is best to write your vows well in advance and keep coming back to them so you can see it with fresh eyes. This way you will end up with much more succinct vows that truly express how you feel. There are no hard and fast rules, but try not to let your vows run for more than two minutes. And of course if you are really stuck ask a close friend for help and advice.

There are many benefits to physically reading your vows out. Most importantly it will give you an idea on how much time it will take to deliver them. Take your time as you say them out loud so that you can gauge the flow of what you have written. Practise will also give you confidence. There will be nerves on the day so the more familiar you are with your words the less stressful it will be.

Delivery on the Day On the wedding day remember to take a deep breath and steady yourself. Focus on the sentiment and deliver your vows slowly and clearly. To put it simply, talk straight from the heart and you can’t go wrong!

Make a Spring Statement by Emma Russell –Stylissimo, Image Consultancy, www.stylissimo.co.uk Two of this seasons big trends are all about the wow factor and creating a style statement through what you wear. Ruffles and Statement Sleeves will be popular trends this Spring Summer and if you follow my simple Stylissimo Style Rules I’m confident there is a look that will complement and enhance every body shape.

Ruffles When wearing ruffles my Stylissimo Style Rule is to be aware of where you wear the ruffles and what impact they have on your body shape. Ruffles create volume due to the additional fabric, therefore they are best worn on an area of your body that you consider to be slimmer and an area that you feel most comfortable with. Ruffles are best worn diagonally across the body or vertically, as seen below with the Miss Selfridge and Marks & Spencer’s dresses. They can create the illusion of being slimmer as they draw the eye up and down the body thus giving you the appearance of being taller and thinner. These wrap style dresses are also great for shapely girls as they draw in your narrow waist and flow over hips beautifully. This pink cold shoulder dress from Very would be great at creating the illusion of a bigger bust if this is an area you do wish to add volume too, and is in this season’s hottest colour trend….Pink!

Statement Sleeve My Stylissimo Style Rule for wearing statement sleeves is to keep everything else simple, this avoids the look being too over powering. A simple white blouse with statement sleeves, like this New Look one, styled with fitted trousers or skirt will avoid creating too much volume in one look. If you fancy trying this trend, take note of where the sleeves draw the eye too on your body. The additional fabric on the sleeves will create volume and draw the attention of the look to that point on your body. Avoid details or fluting around the wrist area of the item if you don’t wish to draw attention to your hips. Instead opt for the statement part of the sleeve being more evenly spread along the arm or even better, featured on the shoulder as this creates a focal point around your face and shoulders and away from your hips. This Topshop gingham dress is perfect. If you have a gorgeous narrow waist and are proud to show off your curves, then this floral jumpsuit will accentuate your curves as the sleeves will complement and draw attention to your narrow waist.

Topshop Gingham Dress £69

River Island Jumpsuit

My simple Stylissimo Style Rules when it comes to making a statement is to ensure you make a positive one by complementing and enhancing your body shape! Remember vertical ruffles will give the illusion of being taller and slimmer and statement sleeves need to accentuate your curves not cover them up. If you wish to understand more about your body shape and how to wear this season’s statement trends why not book a Style Consultation using the reader offer below. 10 Ways to Lose

10lbs Without Dieting

Expert weight loss advice from The Body Clinic, an award winning clinic specialising in Body Shaping, Skin Rejuvenation and Weight Loss. The days are finally getting longer which means spring and summer are just around the corner. This often leads to us looking in the mirror and wondering how to shift the extra layers we’ve gained during the winter months. On the plus side, at this time of year our motivation is at its highest. Whether you have booked a beach holiday or have a special occasion coming up, you want to look and feel your best. But for most people the thought of having to follow a strict diet and exercise regime to shift those unwanted pounds is not realistic. Work, family commitments and busy lives often prevent us from achieving our goals. One of the most common questions we get asked by our clients is “How can I lose 10 pounds without dieting?” To lose weight we need to burn more calories than we eat and there are lots of small, simple changes we can make to our lifestyle habits that can all add up to helping you achieve your perfect weight. Here’s our top 10 tips to help shift those stubborn 10lbs.

This can include sparkling water, tea, coffee, herbal teas, flavoured water etc.

3. Track your calories There are loads of Apps available these days to track your calories. We love MyFitnessPal. By recording the food and drink you consume each day, it makes you accountable to yourself. You’ll be amazed to see how many calories your favourite food has! Set a calorie or weight loss goal and track your progress.

1. Check your portion sizes Most of us eat huge portions that would feed 2 people. One of the simplest ways to lose weight is to reduce your portion size. Try using a side plate instead of a large plate and aim to have half your plate full of vegetables, whilst saving a quarter each for protein and healthy carbs.

4. Cut out sugar in teas and coffees A teaspoon of sugar is 15 calories or more if it’s heaped! Swap your sugar for a natural sweetener such as Stevia for a sweet 0 calorie alternative.

2. Water yourself

5. Swap your Starbucks

The human body is approximately 60% water and every system depends on water to function properly. But what most people don’t know is that research shows, people who drink lots of H2O lose more weight than those who don’t. We recommend drinking 2.5 litres every day.

Did you know a medium Latte from Starbucks has 223 calories, a few of these each week could add up to an extra 1000 calories. Swap to a Skinny Cappuccino for 82 calories or even better an Americano for 17 calories!!

66

Your Health 6. Just say NO

10,000.

Everyone knows this but snacking on crisps, chocolate, cakes, pastries, sweets, etc is a complete NO NO if you want to lose weight. Swap these calorie laden snacks for fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts. Stay sane by having the occasional treat.

9. Exercise with a friend Finding time to socialise and exercise can be difficult so why not do both together! Whether its meeting for a country walk or to giggle your way through Zumba. Not only is this good for your health, it’s also great for lifting your mood.

7. Take away the Takeaways

10. Get your Z’s

Most of our clients tell us they have at least 1 takeaway a week. Takeaways are like a heart attack in a plastic container. They contain huge amounts of calories, fat, sugar and salt, with most meals coming in between 1,000 – 1,600 calories. Enough said!!

Good quality sleep is important for weight loss. Research shows that you are more likely to make unhealthy food choices when you don’t get enough sleep, compared to when you do.

8. Monitor your activity and daily steps

If you have any questions or any topics you would like to see in future columns, please email us at info@thebodyclinic.uk.com

Activity monitors such as FitBit are a fun way to help you to be more active during the day. The recommended number of steps per day is

Getting the

balance back into your life

Hilary Sims firmly believes that if you have a problem in life, it’s always good to talk about the issue rather than bottle it up inside.

any other issue causing unnecessary suffering. Working from Stourbridge, Hilary can provide a safe confidential space to explore these issues but she points out: “I am not here to offer advice or to tell you what to do.”

That’s one of the reasons why the Stourbridge wife and mother became a counsellor. “I have always been the one in the group that people talk to, so it was a natural progression to move into counselling. I have always enjoyed working with people to solve problems and issues.”

“I will listen and offer non-judgemental support and let you explore different ways of dealing with the situation. If a problem is left unsolved, it can manifest into something bigger.” Hilary uses the Humanistic, Person Centered Approach which allows the client to achieve their full potential. Easter's egg-streme issues by Kasey Donnelly

children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. This German tradition seemed completely acceptable, until it took over Easter altogether.

Although a mad indulgence of 'Lindt' seems worth the risk of heart failure and cellulite at first, the after-shock of eating three Easter eggs in a row without fail is worse than most things. Indulging yourself into some chocolate every now and then in perfectly acceptable, but the extreme measures we let ourselves take for one day surely must be bad for our kids:

If you allow yourselves too forgot religious beliefs for a second and focus on the task at hand: surely Easter and this German tradition should be different things? A Strong Christian family wants their children understanding that Christ the saviour rose again, rather than thinking it's national sugar day.

Ask your child what Easter is associated with and I can guarantee they'll say 'Creme eggs, chocolate or Easter egg hunt'. Then proceed to ask them where Easter was born from, and I bet they'll say the Easter bunny - We clearly have a problem.

On the contrary, if Christianity isn't your religion or you're simply not religious within yourself, then by all means carry out your with your ways, but it's vital that you remember the truth behind Easter. Remember that it is the day of Christ's resurrection, rather than the day of the mighty creme egg.

Easter is the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead. Meanwhile, in the 1700s German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Their

BARE ROOT AND ROOT BALL PLANTS EXPLAINED By Martin Neenan Garden Creations General Manager The dormant season – mid-autumn to early spring – is generally agreed to be the best time to plant root-ball and bare root plants.

quickly as possible – except if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Make sure they are in situ before the spring growing season.

Not sure what this means? Hopefully, this simple explanation will help you so that you can the most out of your outdoor space.

Root-ball plants usually come in a hessian wrap & wire mesh to hold in the compost or soil and roots. It’s a common method for larger, semi-mature trees and conifers and other evergreens. Make sure you dig a hole that’s at least twice as wide as the root ball but only as deep as the root ball itself. Plant the root ball too deep and it could encourage disease to enter the trunk.

Bare-root plants are exactly what it says: plants with their bare roots exposed. That means they are sold without any compost and not in pots. Instead, they are sold wrapped in polythene, which prevents the fibrous roots from drying out. Bare-root plants and trees are typically between one and three years old and because they have large clumps of root, they will establish more quickly once in the ground. It’s important, however, to keep the roots damp (put them in a bucket of water) and plant the specimens in their permanent position as

Lets get Growing January started off fairly mild, but soon turned colder with an icy blast rolling in from the middle of the month. When the weathers frosty and snowy its best to keep off the garden, having ensured that any vulnerable plants have been wrapped in fleece and you’ve protected any taps and hosepipes from the cold.

and plant supports before they get too tall and flop over. Slugs and snails love young herbaceous shoots, especially in damp conditions. Use a deterrent to prevent the wholesale slaughter of your plants. As the weather becomes increasingly mild, thoughts start turning to the lawn. We recommend the use of MO Bacter to kill moss and feed the lawn naturally. It feeds the lawn over a 12-week period and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil and which when added to fertiliser will consume material like thatch and moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment. Or use products such as Evergreen Complete which contain a feed, weed killer and moss killer in one product. Once the moss has died and gone black it can be raked out. Remember the golden rule with lawns never rake moss out while it’s still alive, you’ll just spread it everywhere.

One thing to do though is to ensure that the birds have plenty of feed and water available to them. Dead head bulbs particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on to send nutrients back to the bulb and top dress with fertilizer. This should give you a good display of flowers next year. Remember to dead head spring flowering bedding plants as well to encourage more flowers. If it’s been damp and mild pansies and violas can develop black leaf spot at this time of year – remove the worst affected leaves and dispose of and spray with a fungicide to discourage the spread. Spring is the ideal time to split snowdrops into smaller clumps.

Annual herbs can be sown now – fennel, parsley, savoury, dill all need replenishing every year. Perennial herb varieties can also be planted, remember to water and feed regularly so you can keep cropping throughout the year. Softer varieties should as Basil and Coriander can be grown on the kitchen windowsill – handy for using when cooking.

Many summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up – Lilies, Canna, Pineapple flower and Summer Snowdrop. Always plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Dahlias can be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. To increase the number of plants try taking cuttings from tubers when the growth is around 10cm long – they root very easily. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse.

Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Sow your first and second early potatoes followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears. Carrots, celery, beetroot, leeks, onions, broad beans and lettuce can all be sown or planted outside during April. Sow at regular intervals to give a steady supply of vegetables.

Remove any old growth from perennials and divide if required. Put in stakes, canes

Lungworm - a potential killer in dogs Over 200 cases now confirmed in the Midlands • • • • • • • •

Spring is in the air and as temperatures start to creep above freezing, our thoughts may turn to getting back outside for some fresh air. For dog owners, walkies might start to feel more enjoyable when the wind is a little less biting and for the dogs themselves, the urge for adventure returns when they aren’t slipping around on frozen ground or braving a driving sleet shower.

By Dr Kevin Orembo, Blacks Vets BVM Cert AVP MRCVS

Coughing Tiring easily / lethargic Vomiting Diarrhoea Loss of appetite / weight loss Excessive bleeding from minor wounds Nosebleeds Change in usual behavior

These symptoms can of course be indicative of many conditions, not just Lungworm, which can make the problem tricky to diagnose. However, your vet can help confirm diagnosis through blood tests or stool (poo) samples. Early diagnosis means early treatment and a greater chance of a positive outcome.

As gardens slowly come back to life and the first green shoots tentatively poke through the soil, the slugs and snails begin to make their presence known, and it’s these seemingly harmless creatures that are the subject of this issue’s article.

Where in the UK is Lungworm found? Lungworm is now endemic across the UK with 203 cases confirmed within a 50 mile radius of Dudley and its likely that this figure could be much higher when factoring in unconfirmed cases. Cases have been reported in locations such as Stourbridge, Kidderminster, Wolverhampton, Bromsgrove, West Bromwich, Worcester and Droitwich.

What is Lungworm? Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite that is carried by slugs and snails which can cause serious health issues in dogs and can kill if not treated in time. Infection occurs when a slug or snail carrying the Lungworm larvae is ingested by a dog. Slugs or snails of any size can carry the larvae meaning that even if your dog isn’t normally interested in eating these creatures, they may accidentally do so by drinking from a puddle or outdoor water bowl, eating grass or rummaging through the undergrowth on a walk. The slime produced by molluscs can also cause infection meaning that toys left outside may have been crawled on by a slug or snail leaving a contaminated trail behind. In short, it is very easy for a dog to pick up Lungworm without their owner realising.

How to keep your dog safe Lungworm can be treated and can result in a full recovery if diagnosed in time, but as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Talk to your vet about a parasite programme suitable for your dog. At Blacks vets we use and recommend a spot treatment that is applied to the back of the neck once a month and covers Lungworm as well as other common parasites such as Fleas, Roundworm and Hookworm. Fortunately, this is part of our Protect My Pet Club package which provides members with year round Flea, Parasite and Worm treatments, as well as annual vaccinations and boosters, health checks and discounts on routine care. Find out more by visiting www.blacksvets.co.uk

What to look out for… If you know that your dog has eaten a slug or a snail or suspect that they could have come into contact with one, it is very important that they see a vet at the earliest opportunity if they present any of these symptoms:

Destructive divorce ruining many lives warns leading family law expert whole family, and have a code of practice, which ensures they do the very best that they can. It so fits with my ethos in that I am committed to resolving issues and not enflaming them, because it’s best if a couple in the midst of a tough time can reach an agreement without added stress and anxiety. Such turmoil can affect children, other family relations and even close friendships.

Sonali Obhrai – Family solicitor It’s often overlooked when couples divorce, but departing a marriage with dignity is so utterly vital for the future lives of those going their separate ways.

It makes so much sense too. After all, it is heart breaking to see couples who have had a bitter divorce and years later one or both of them have never moved on.

I speak from experience, as someone with more than a decade of practising family law. I feel passionately that more warnings are needed by family law experts about how damaging destructive divorces can be.

Cool heads are needed and an experienced lawyer too as the division of matrimonial assets and disputes relating to child arrangements are areas where a knowledgeable family solicitor is essential.

The emotional turmoil during divorce is extremely high and people can embark on a course of action, which can cause unnecessary added pain that lasts a lifetime. That is no good to anyone, living with a constant feeling of anger and resentment.

To add to this, an experienced family lawyer, who understands the emotional side of divorce, is just as important. Relationship breakdowns can be emotionally draining and no two divorces are ever the same, so a family lawyer should take the time to truly listen and understand the client’s unique circumstances. This is so vital.

Of course though, not all marriages can breakup amicably, but retaining one’s dignity and thinking about the big picture further down the line has to be taken into consideration. After all, going through a divorce is one of the most stressful situations that can take place in a person’s life and this is understandable as the future becomes much more of an uncertain place. For this reason, I always take a nonconfrontational approach and I am also a member of Resolution, a family law body, which focuses on amicable conclusions to family disputes.

Bearing this in mind we at Thursfields in Sedgley are offering a free 30 minute initial consultation enabling those who are thinking about divorce to be given clarity of the options available and what to expect. Those wishing to know more about divorce or other family matters should contact me, Sonali Obhrai at the Sedgley office on 01902 904 060 or email sobhrai@thursfields.co.uk. This Time it’s Personal: Tax Allowances

Anita Gatehouse Your Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

In a broad sense the job of a financial planner can be split into two areas:

which have now been withdrawn and replaced by a Dividend Allowance. This means dividends are paid gross and any dividend income, up to £5,000 a year, will be taxfree.

Firstly you, helping you understand your money; giving you a plan to achieve your aspirations, reducing worry and enabling you to get on with “life”.

However, it is really a “zero-rate” band because the dividends still count as taxable earnings so may affect entitlement to the Personal Allowance or Child Benefit. The new tax rates on dividends above the £5,000 allowance are:

Secondly, the technical “stuff” that we continually monitor behind the scenes, taking the heavy lifting so that you take advantage of planning opportunities and avoid pitfalls. You probably have more interesting things to do than reading 150 pages of the Chancellor’s Budget!

• • •

As we come towards the end of one tax year and the beginning of another, I thought it might be useful to recap on two new tax allowances and a significant change introduced back on 6 April 2016.

7.5% for basic rate tax payers 32.5% for higher rate tax payers 38.1% for additional rate tax payers.

Two broad groups of taxpayers are better off under the new dividend rules: those with dividends of up to £5,000 in a tax year; and higher and additional rate taxpayers who receive dividends, as a rough guide, less than £22,000 and £25,000 respectively. However, those with significant dividend income will be worse off.

Savings accounts interest is now paid gross, meaning no tax is deducted from your interest before you receive it. Another change is the new annual tax-free Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) for interest. Basic rate tax payers can earn up to £1,000 in interest, free of tax and higher rate tax payers, £500. However, now it is really important that you know how much interest you have earned over the year. Previously tax due was paid directly to the taxman from your building society account.

These two areas highlight the need to be informed to ensure you don’t have any nasty surprises around the corner and that your affairs are arranged efficiently. If you would like a free 30 minute meeting to discuss your own position, telephone Jo on 01562 745730 to book an appointment. If you’re not sure, have a look at what our clients say about us on our website: www.cre8wm.co.uk

Now the responsibility is on you if you are liable to pay some tax. Dividends in the old regime included a tax credit

Cancer (June 21-July 21)

Capricorn (December 21 - January 19) It is the practicalities that matter, getting down to the nitty gritty and sorting out what you really want is the order of the times. Perhaps you need to sort the wood from the trees, clear the clutter now and the future could seem even sweeter.

Though you may feel as if you are going around in circles, it's what happens as far as other people are concerned that will ring the changes in your life. Try to take a back seat let others lead whilst you follow with the benefit of their mistakes.

Leo ( July 22- August 21) The new mellow mood that is surrounding you, could be a great secret of success. If you are prepared to take things nice and easy you may be able to charm the birds off the trees and utilise your true power in influencing the lives of others. The astrological barometer is heading towards, 'positive'.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) The words of a stranger may ring true in terms of advice, only if you are prepared to listen will this have any effect. You could be on the brink of meeting a new group of people that could serve to change your priorities for the better.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

Virgo (August 22- September 22)

It's all to do with getting the timing right. If you need to be there at 8am don't turn up at 5 past otherwise the action will cease. This is a great month for clean, crisp and decisive thinking. It's a powerful month ahead which could sweep you away with unexpected success.

Take a long cool look at yourself and enjoy the talent and ability that is obviously yours. It is time to start using the abilities that you have, as it is no good hiding your light under a bushel. Whatever you do it's likely that your true talent will out.

Libra (September 21- October 22)

Aries ( March 21- April 20)

You could find yourself having to plan that very special journey. it is time to put your thinking cap on and to go for the most savvy deal that you can negotiate. You are a cracking wheeler- dealer if you will just put your mind to it.

Due to positive activity, in your twelfth house, you could find yourself doing remarkably well as far as the social aspects of your life are concerned. Put on your finest apparel and let others know just what goof taste you have.

Scorpio (October 23- November 22)

Taurus (April 21 - May 20)

Though you may get off to a frustrating start, you seem to be heading for a flagship couple of months. How other people see you will bring you more than just token success. You could hit a big bright bonanza as far as money is concerned too.

Financial investments are beginning to build up, although there are no immediate improvements, in the long term everything looks great. Concentrate on the compound effect of building up that special little nest egg, into a future windfall.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 20)

Gemini (May 21- June 20)

Don't be overcome by anticipation and excitement, for it looks as if love is well and truly in the air. The romantic flame is burning brightly as Venus the planet of love gently influences your sign. Enjoy but don't jump the gun. Patience will bring you all that you need.

Things seem to be proceeding at breakneck speed, the blink of an eye could change things unexpectedly. Your chart is in the 'Luck Zone' and this means that whatever changes should see you falling upon your feet with true serendipity. The lady of fate is definitely on your side.

The Ford Fiesta – A constant success, since 1976. By Evans Halshaw.

During 1972, Ford set out on a special project to create a small car for the masses. It was codenamed ‘Project Bobcat’. The project was approved a year later in 1973 after problems in the Middle East increased the price of fuel, meaning people wanted smaller engine cars with decent fuel economy. Ford, therefore built a manufacturing plant in Spain to produce the car created by ‘Project Bobcat’ – and in 1976 the Ford Fiesta was born, rolling off the Spanish production line for the very first time.

late ‘80s. The ‘90s saw the launch of the iconic Fiesta RS Turbo, replacing the XR2 name.

Henry Ford II personally chose the name Fiesta, after the cars connection with Spain. Meanwhile, a year later in 1977, the Ford Fiesta was released in the UK to compete with small, efficient cars which rival manufacturers had already launched. Initially available with a 1.0-litre and 1.1-litre Ghia, the Fiesta was inexpensive, economical, small and stylish.

The Fiesta has managed to keep the same characteristics which made it so popular on launch. As with the original in 1976, today’s Fiesta is small, stylish, inexpensive and economical (thanks to incredible EcoBoost engine technology). The Fiesta has also remained a brilliant car to drive, with a fine gearbox and decent handling offered throughout the range. Practicality is also impressive with useful storage inlets, a big boot (largest in class) and three and five-door body styles. Safety ratings also see the Fiesta range score top marks.

During the ‘00s, the Fiesta range continued its impressive success and evolution. The ‘hot’ Fiesta had yet another new name – this time called the ST, yet followed on the same success the XR2 and RS Turbo had achieved. An all-new Fiesta was unveiled in 2008, setting an unbelievable achievement of being the UK’s best-selling car since the year after its launch, year after year.

The ‘80s saw the Fiesta rise to dominant success, becoming the best-selling car in its class in Britain – an early indication of just how successful the Ford Fiesta would become. The ‘80s also proved to be a decade of firsts for the Fiesta as it saw the birth of the XR2 – the first Fiesta capable of 100mph and the foundation benchmark of all performance Fiesta’s in future. The first 5-door Fiesta was also introduced in the
