DEAR TRAVELER, In 2017 no fewer than four ships in our fleet will be in Europe, to provide explorations and experiences we’ve honed over several years, or in the case of National Geographic Orion, successfully inaugurated last season. Making Europe exceptionally rewarding for you is our goal, and our ships are integral to that. Each of the four is lovely and very comfortable with lots of outdoor space for hanging out and for dining; and with as few as 48 guests (Lord of The Glens) to a still-intimate 148 (National Geographic Explorer), each is more yacht-like in scale and feeling than the cruise or river ships plying European waters. Our ships give us the flexibility to explore anywhere, from tiny islands in the Swedish archipelago, to charming villages on the Dingle Peninsula or the Iberian coast, and through the heart of Scotland—entering Europe through the front door, so to speak, greeting it in the time-honored way, freed from airports and rail yards. The hotel staff aboard each ship is highly aware of being in Europe where cuisine is revered. They offer culinary experiences that have earned rave reviews, and mirror the regions we explore to further enhance your experience. Also integral to our Europe approach is choice, with itineraries ranging from compact one-week sojourns aboard NG Orion, or a 12-day journey aboard the remarkable Sea Cloud, to a new 19-day circumnavigation of the British and Irish Isles aboard NG Explorer. Our Specialists can not only book your voyage, they can handle the flight arrangements for you to make getting to, from, or around Europe as effortless as possible. Value is an important component, too. You’ll find that with our all-inclusive pricing (even your bar tab and crew tips are included), and the 10% savings on any two or more voyages, our Europe offerings are quite appealing. We hope you’ll join us in 2017—to revisit a Europe you love, to discover a new Europe, or to experience a new ship and onboard experience that delights you. We promise it will be meaningful. All the best,

OUR EUROPE ADVANTAGE:
50 YEARS OF EX
For decades now, Europe has been the province of big cruise and river ships, white-gloved waiters, and tour guides shepherding tourists to and from the same sightseeing spots. Why then should you choose a company renowned for expedition travel to voyage to Europe?
2
HERE’S WHY: AUTHENTICITY, EXCLUSIVITY, MEANING
PERFECT PLATFORMS FOR EXPLORING
Since 1967 when Lars-Eric Lindblad brought the first citizen explorers to Antarctica, our mission has been to ensure you authentically discover and experience destinations with all your senses, while benefiting from onboard experts. Where a cruise caters to people within the confines of the ship, our expeditions put the focus on what lies outside the ship—to ensure you’ll have the most meaningful Europe possible.
Our unique ships will also reward your desire for a cosseting ambiance, exceptional cuisine, and superb comfort with amenities including a sauna and Wellness Center (National Geographic Orion/ Explorer), fully-stocked libraries, a welcoming bridge and onboard tools, from Zodiacs and kayaks to bicycles (see ship pages for specific tools per ship.) And the staff’s knowledge will satisfy your desire to see, do and learn more.
PEDITION EXPERIENCE RENOWNED STAFF PLUS GUEST EXPERTS
OTHER EXCLUSIVE EXPERIENCES
Orion is the only ship in Europe with an onboard musicologist, who has arranged entertaining performances, on and off-ship, by leading European musicians. Sea Cloud plies ancient seas with experts aboard to bring history and antiquity to life for you. Lord of The Glens provides, as do all our ships, an onboard certified photo instructor to help you capture the quintessence of Scotland. National Geographic Explorer’s large expedition team and Global Perspectives Guest Speaker provides varied expertise to illuminate the many facets of its far-ranging, thought-provoking itinerary.
The truth is, while we specialize in “off the beaten track” explorations, certain places on our itineraries are highlights for all—of great historical significance or intrinsic interest. And we will find ourselves in the company of others when we visit them. But our voyages balance these inevitably touristic but vital experiences with exclusive opportunities offering a more personal and privileged perspective. In all cases, the knowledge and guidance of our staff, and the quality of the reflection in our daily cocktail hour Recaps, will add the layers of insight and meaning to the day’s adventures that guests have relied on Lindblad Expeditions to provide for 50 years.

So, whether you’ve chosen to visit the UNESCO site of Oporto, stroll a tiny island in the Swedish archipelago, or steep in the mystique of Callanish’s ancient standing stones in Scotland, you can rely on your expedition team to illuminate all you encounter. Aboard National Geographic Orion a concierge is on hand to assist you in making the most of your every day. THE BEST OF COAS OFF THE TOURIST TRACK AB On five carefully curated itineraries, National Geographic Orion makes her way from the sun-splashed, ocher coast of Portugal and France’s Côte Basque to the birch-shaded cool of Scandinavia, the sea-brined coasts of England and Wales (for a longer itinerary in this region, see pages 24 to 25) and on to the Baltics before she begins her Arctic season, creating opportunities for extraordinary experiences all along the way. Our Orion program also features an onboard concierge to better optimize your days, and to help you select among activities. And Orion is the only ship in Europe to include an onboard musicologist as an integral staff member—to arrange performances, on and off-ship, by leading European musicians that are highly entertaining, and provide the fullest flavor of indigenous traditions and history. That, and the services of our onboard National Geographic photographer and certified photo Porto, Portugal.

CALLING ALL ROMANTICS This expedition, venturing to remarkable locations in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, is one we’ve offered, with variations, at regular intervals over the years, and we’ve refined the itinerary to perfection. A few places we explore are iconic and oft-visited, while most others are remote, existing in a state of grace—rarely visited because of the sheer difficulty of doing so, and immensely rewarding to discover. It’s an itinerary of all high points—it’s one of the most original and interesting expeditions we offer. It even includes Fair Isle, one of the most remote settlements in the U.K., with its lyrical topography and small, photogenic population (redheads in Fair Isle sweaters!)—exhilaratingly off the beaten path. While our one-week itinerary aboard National Geographic Orion takes you to some of the same places in a compact timeframe, this longer, more discursive National Geographic Explorer expedition gives you an in-depth look into the extraordinary depth and breadth of UK history—4,000-5,000 BC sites like Callanish, ninth-century Celtic

CLOUD
SHIP WITH A SOUL Sea Cloud is the most authentic, historic, and elegant handsailed tall ship in the world. People have been in love with her since she was commissioned by E.F. Hutton and his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, in 1931. And travelers have been in love with the Greek Isles and the Dalmatian Coast for far longer. Sea Cloud is a destination and a reason to travel all in one, but add our carefully crafted Greek Isles, and Greece and Dalmatian Coast itineraries, plus our unique Lindblad-National Geographic expedition style, to Sea Cloud’s allures, and you have an incomparable travel inspiration. Our expedition style balances Sea Cloud’s native elegance with casual comfort. It replaces ports of call with flexibility and spontaneity. And it mixes the surprise and delight of “off the beaten path” islands and authentic local experiences with visits to must-see sites. Consider too that when we’re in the Mediterranean, we make it a priority to schedule our visits for the cool of the morning when we have legendary sites virtually to ourselves, and you have the prospect of an unparalleled travel experience.
At left: the 58-guest historic Sea Cloud under full sail; clockwise above: watch the crew of 18 go aloft to work her 30 sails; Sea Cloud's elegant details; Category B cabins are the original, deluxe cabins built for the Huttons' guests.
Sea Cloud is a surprisingly stable ship, with a beautiful ride in all manner of seas. Every ship has a personality; Sea Cloud has a soul—as do the beautiful regions of the Mediterranean we explore. Both are products of sailing cultures, and therefore best appreciated under sail. Sea Cloud is an unforgettable experience—one that few people realize still exists in the 21st century.

THROUGH THE BEATING HEART OF SCOTLAND
34
Grand castles, lyrical moorlands, sacred abbeys, and sweeping mountains—from the long traditions of Scotland’s clans and monarchs to Bonnie Prince Charlie’s famed rebellion, the romance and intrigue of Scotland’s countryside and traditions speak to all of us. Enjoy traditional Scottish music and fare, or fine single malts with your history—this is the trip for you, especially if you like occupying a privileged perspective. We’ve been offering expeditions in Scotland for decades, endlessly discovering new facets with our guests. And for many years now, we’ve offered in-depth journeys aboard the 48-guest Lord of the Glens, a ship many describe as a cross between a yacht and a private home. Comfortable and intimate, with teak decks, polished wood interiors, gourmet cuisine and exceptional personal service, Lord of the Glens is uniquely able, as well. She traverses the Caledonian Canal, which connects the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, via a passageway of lochs and canals, and sails to the great islands of the Inner Hebrides—an uncommon and peerless nine-day journey through the heart of Scotland. Encompassing the soul of its highlands and islands, this voyage takes you to Loch Ness and other Scottish lakes, the storied battlefield of Culloden, beautiful Glenfinnan; it also passes through the intricate series of locks known as Neptune’s Staircase, and visits the historic Isle of Iona, and the isles of Mull, Eigg, and Skye. And there’s even time for a visit to the most remote pub in the British Isles.
