Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have joined forces to further inspire the world through expedition travel. Our collaboration in exploration, research, technology and conservation will provide extraordinary travel experiences and disseminate geographic knowledge around the globe.

DEAR TRAVELER, We are celebrating 50 years of expedition travel this year, commemorating my father’s historic 1966 expedition bringing the first laymen explorers to Antarctica. January 23, 1966 effectively launched the concept of expedition travel, and so many people have benefited since, as a consequence of his vision and courage. The following year he opened up the Galápagos Islands to travelers and as a young lad I was fortunate to accompany him on one of the early expeditions; and I remember the awe and excitement almost as if it were yesterday. Since then I’ve been back more than 50 times, and have had the good fortune to combine work and my kids’ school breaks to experience it with them. These islands have a magnetic pull unlike any other archipelago in the world, as you will surely discover, if you elect to go. It’s also worth noting that Galápagos is “in season” all year round, so you can join us any week that suits your schedule. We have a couple of unique possibilities for an already-unique place for those who have a particularly strong interest in creating images through drawing or photography. These programs are being offered again—by popular demand. Join us for Make Art, Make A Difference in late summer and you’ll have an exclusive and meaningful experience of Galápagos—as our artists-in-residence help tune your eyes, mind, and heart to the most telling details—and turn you into ambassadors for Galápagos preservation forever. And, this year we’ll have two artists, one aboard each of our ships, so you’ll have an even wider range of choice. You’ll find all the details on the program and the artists on pages 12-13. And, you’ll also find our Free Air and Solo Traveler Savings offers on select departures there too. And our December Epic Photo Expedition will feature a larger roster of National Geographic photographers and certified photo instructors to ensure that you’ll have a range of expertise at your side on every excursion—to help you maximize every opportunity. See page 15. (Of course, you should know that all departures have Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructors so you can benefit from this feature all year long.) On behalf of the entire expedition team, we look forward to sharing the adventure with you. All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad Front cover: Endemic to the Galápagos, the marine iguana (albemarlensis) is the world’s only swimming iguana. OUR GALÁPAGOS RELATIONSHIPS RUN DEEP They began when Lars-Eric Lindblad, considered by many to be the father of eco-tourism, led the first-ever citizen explorer expedition to Galápagos in 1967, and then stepped forward to pay the salaries of the islands’ first two conservation officials in 1968. While many travel companies have recently begun to offer Galápagos cruises, we’ve been committed to these islands for nearly 50 years, leading countless expeditions to reveal them, in a uniquely in-depth and immersive way, to generations of curious, intelligent travelers. We were thrilled to learn that Travel + Leisure readers recently voted Galápagos the best islands in the world! We couldn’t agree more: they’re a must-see for all types of travelers. And our authentic ship-based expedition is the ideal way to experience all the diversity and wonder. Our long experience is your assurance of an extraordinary adventure—and the wildlife that makes Galápagos unique in all the world is your guarantee.

THE GALÁPAGOS UNDERSEA IS

A VITAL PART OF YOUR EXPERIENCE The Galápagos undersea is a marvel. It’s vibrantly healthy, thanks to effective conservation. Which means snorkelers can enjoy encounters with sea lions, sea turtles, penguins, tons of fish, and even multiple shark species. Enjoying frequent snorkeling is easy—our ships are equipped with complete snorkel gear, including wetsuits, for every guest, yours for the duration. So, there’s no need to pack or lug your own. Prefer to stay dry? No worries, National Geographic Endeavour is equipped with a glass-bottom boat. Or let our undersea specialists be your ‘eyes.’ Integral members of the expedition teams on both our ships, they snorkel, shoot video, and present it during evening Recap for all to enjoy. Every Lindblad-National Geographic Galápagos expedition offers a generous number of snorkeling opportunities, including multiple outings in a single day during the course of the voyage. ª Only Lindblad-National Geographic includes an undersea specialist to

ensure you get the most in-depth undersea experience. PREVIEW THE GALÁPAGOS UNDERSEA AT EXPEDITIONS.COM/GALAUNDERSEA

THE QUALITY OF OUR STAFF

ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF YOUR EXPERIENCE Our Galápagos expedition team, hand-picked and Lindblad Expeditions-trained, is made up of engaging naturalists born and bred in the Galápagos Islands, and naturalists who moved to the islands from the mainland or other countries over 20 years ago. They live and breathe Galápagos, and are passionate about the nature and conservation of this remote archipelago. They each have a deep understanding of all aspects of Galápagos’ natural and human history, and are experts in relevant areas: ornithology, geology, zoology, and the undersea. PAULA TAGLE Expedition leader & naturalist Paula grew up in the city of Guayaquil. After completing her degree in geology, she worked in different parts of Ecuador, including Galápagos. After completing her master’s in quaternary geology in Belgium, she discovered she was more interested in volcanoes than in raw materials. So, she eagerly returned to Galápagos, a mecca for geologists. Bewitched by the other wonders of the islands, Paula delights in interpreting and creating an in-depth experience for our guests.

CARLOS ROMERO Expedition leader, naturalist & certified photo instructor Raised amid the biodiversity of Venezuela and Ecuador, Carlos was fascinated by tropical ecology at an early age. He holds a doctorate in biology and a master’s in ecotourism and natural protected areas management, and one of the scientific papers he’s authored led him to Galápagos. Entranced by the unique, fearless fauna of the archipelago, he chose to train as a naturalist. He has dedicated his life to the islands ever since, and generously shares his knowledge and insight with guests. VISIT WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM/EXPERTBIOS AND SELECT YOUR ITINERARY TO LEARN WHICH STAFF IS TRAVELING ON YOUR DEPARTURE.

AURA BANDA CRUZ Naturalist, certified photo instructor & undersea specialist Aura’s grandparents were among the earliest settlers in the Galápagos in the 1930s— her mother was born on Floreana Island, one of twelve siblings intricately involved in the conservation of the islands. Aura’s childhood was spent among the finches and swimming with sea lions. After completing studies in Quito, Aura returned and has spent the past ten years sharing Galápagos and photography with guests.

JONATHAN AGUAS Naturalist & certified photo instructor Jonathan’s family dates back five generations on San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos. He first left the islands on a scholarship to finish his bachelor’s degree in integrative biology in the U.S., and returned to his beloved Galápagos to teach—choosing to work as a naturalist was a natural progression. His science background and keen eye for beauty led him to photography and to helping guests capture their Galápagos experience.

JUAN CARLOS AVILA Expedition leader, naturalist & certified photo instructor Juan Carlos spent his early years in the natural exuberance of the Cotopaxi region of Ecuador. At the age of twelve, his family moved to Santa Cruz, Galápagos. His knowledge of the natural history of the islands is bone deep. Currently completing his education degree, he is an advocate for the importance of the archipelago and its conservation. In his role as a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor, he helps guests “see” the islands in every sense.

JASON HEILMANN Naturalist, certified photo instructor & undersea specialist Jason grew up in the lush Pacific Northwest. While attending university there, he met an Ecuadorian woman. Following her home, he found himself in the Galápagos Islands, one of the most revered natural environments on Earth, and his niche as a professional scuba diver and dive assistant on scientific projects. He entered the Galápagos National Park naturalist program in 1999, and now shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with our guests.

WHEN YOU TRAVEL WITH US,

YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE Since 1997, together with our guests, we’ve raised more than $7 million to support important conservation, education, research, and community development projects in Galápagos, creating the LEX-NG Fund to manage donations. The LEX-NG Fund carries the operating costs, so 100% of all guest donations are put toward high-impact projects addressing important priorities in the region. Foundations including the Helmsley Charitable Trust have joined these efforts, providing significant grants to tackle the biggest challenges facing the archipelago.

EXPANDING YOUR REACH IN GALÁPAGOS Over the years, we’ve established successful working relationships with the main players in Galápagos conservation—the Charles Darwin Foundation and Galápagos National Park Directorate—as well as with the leaders of the Tomás de Berlanga School. Most recently, we’ve accepted three new grantees into our project portfolio, including Darwin Animal Doctors, a group bringing in volunteer veterinarians to protect the islands’ wildlife by teaching responsible pet ownership; Dr. Pelayo Salinas de Leon, Senior Marine Scientist at the Charles Darwin Foundation, for his work with sharks; and Island Conservation, a group dedicated to preventing extinctions by removing unwanted species from islands. We look forward to witnessing all these projects and people make a lasting difference to Galápagos.

Concerted conservation efforts are vital to Galápagos' future.

“The bring-a-book program is greatly enhancing our kids’ access to books, both English and Spanish, and will provide the needed rotation of books to replace the ones that get ruined because of the severe climate. We are both proud of the new library and excited about the new opportunities that it will afford the kids.” – Matthew Geiger, Director, Tomás de Berlanga School

WELL-VERSED IN NATURE, READING & ENGLISH The Tomás de Berlanga School in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, is an educational project run by the local Scalesia Foundation. This open-air school, a leader in educational advancements in the region, immerses its students in nature as they learn. Its curriculum seeks to cultivate the next generation of stewards for Galápagos through critical thinking, bilingualism, high academic standards, and experiential learning. Approximately 30% of its students receive financial scholarships, supported by the LEX-NG Fund. In late 2015, with the school’s encouragement, we invited Lindblad-National Geographic’s Galápagos guests to bring fiction and non-fiction books selected by the school’s teachers, in English or Spanish, to donate to the school library. The program has proved a resounding success! Some 269 books have been donated to date—and we are continuing the program. So, if you intend to travel with us and choose to participate, we will provide details on the kind of books encouraged.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER The Galápagos Islands are famous for endemic wildlife—wildlife not found anywhere else in the world. Galápagos penguins, for example, are the second smallest penguin species on earth and the only ones to inhabit the equator. (These fascinating birds can be spotted at a couple locations on our our expeditions.) Together with our guests, the LEX-NG Fund has supported the Charles Darwin Foundation’s penguin and cormorant study: an ongoing project that is crucial to their long-term conservation. The data collected from this study, and others we support, allows the Galápagos National Park Directorate to make science-based management decisions to protect these endemic species and their habitats.

MAKE ART, MAKE A DIFFERENCE Join us aboard National Geographic Endeavour or National Geographic Islander—make art, support local artisans, and gain a deeper, richer Galápagos experience at the same time, while becoming an insightful conservation ‘ambassador’ for Galápagos, on board these departures: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENDEAVOUR: 2016: Sep. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ISLANDER: 2016: Aug. 20, 27; Sep. 3, 10

WITNESS the transformation of trash into treasure Lindblad Expeditions is the only travel company with a self-run program, philanthropically committed to economically supporting the artisan communities in the regions we explore—through the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Artisan Fund. Our program in Galápagos is shaped by unique conditions: the small existing community of Galápagos artisans once imported much of their materials; and Galápagos is 97% National Park, so all consumer waste has to be exported to the mainland. By helping local artisans adaptively re-use Galápagos’ trash—specifically paper waste and bulky glass—we alleviate an environmental burden and produce economic benefits. We have helped to establish two fullyequipped glass workshops on the islands, and have enabled local artisans to achieve real success—now 40% of the galleries and shops in Santa Cruz offer recycled glass and paper objects of beauty and utility.

AMY BARTLETT WRIGHT

JONATHAN ALDERFER

Working with the revered scientist, Dr. E.O. Wilson, while he was at Harvard University, Amy illustrated his 1986 The Diversity of Life published by Harvard University Press. She drew finch specimens at Harvard Museum of Natural History that Darwin described following his studies in the Galápagos over 100 years ago. She has illustrated a book on shell identification for National Geographic and some 68 additional books, plus hundreds of magazines. She teaches illustration at Rhode Island School of Design, and has taught students aged 5-80, making drawing and painting fun to learn.

Jonathan has specialized in painting birds and natural history subjects for more than thirty years. For ten years he was National Geographic’s resident birding expert, and authored, edited, or illustrated more than twenty books for the National Geographic Society, including the best-selling Field Guide to the Birds of North America (7th edition now in progress). Jonathan is an avid birder and excels at teaching other nature lovers—whatever their age and level of skill—how to draw and paint birds. During the summer of 2015 he taught a weeklong workshop, Arts and Birding, at National Audubon’s Hog Island Camp in Maine.

DEPARTURES: Combine a Galápagos expedition with Upper Amazon on a number of our 2016 & 2017 departures. Please call for details.

We have conducted numerous Amazon expeditions in our history, and launched EXPEDITION our first voyage aboard the beautiful, 28-guest Delfin II in August 2010. In order to provide expedition leadership in this pristine region, we tapped our tenured expedition leaders to lead our Amazon voyages, providing our guests with the same in-depth interpretation they find on our other expeditions. Our veteran team is highly knowledgeable about this locale, and trained to illuminate all the discoveries you’ll make.

EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS ▶▶ Walk and snorkel among the abundant, iconic Galápagos wildlife that is unfazed by your presence. ▶▶ Hike pristine islands, kayak their peaceful shorelines, and explore the Galápagos undersea. ▶▶ In the Amazon, discover an entirely different kind of biodiversity—macaws, monkeys, sloths & more, plus meet the ribereños—inhabitants of the jungle we explore. “The dolphins are swimming through the trees. Bending sinuous bodies, they glide through branches and curl like snakes around fluted trunks. As frog-green fish dart through the leaves, the dolphins, pink as bubble gum, snap at them with long, toothy beaks. This is not some kaleidoscope dreamscape from a novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; this is the wet season in the upper Amazon.” —MARK JENKINS, “RIVER DOLPHINS,” NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE, JUNE 2009

DAYS 1-8: AS PER GALÁPAGOS ITINERARY ON PAGES 18-19. DAY 9: GALÁPAGOS/GUAYAQUIL/ LIMA, PERU Depart Galápagos this morning and fly to Lima, Peru via Guayaquil, arriving in the evening. Overnight at the conveniently located Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel. (B,L) DAY 10: LIMA/IQUITOS/NAUTA Enjoy a morning tour of Lima, then fly to Iquitos and continue overland to the riverside village of Nauta, where the Delfin II awaits. Settle into your cabin, and gather for a welcome dinner of fine Peruvian cuisine on board. Tonight, step out on deck to gaze at the magnificent Amazon night sky. (B,L,D) DAYS 11-18: PACAYA-SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE Spend this week exploring the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a pristine swath of jungle— one of the largest in South America—stretching more than five million acres, and harboring some of the Amazon’s most fascinating flora and fauna. Bordered by the Marañón and the Ucayali, two powerful rivers that converge to create the famed Amazon, the reserve floods annually with nutrient-rich waters and is known locally as the Mirrored Forest for the reflections created by the glassy water. Set out into this remarkable wilderness on daily excursions by skiff, kayak, and, when

the water level permits, hikes on terra firma. Skim past giant lily pads afloat on black-water lakes, and venture deep into the rain forest on narrow tributaries. Spot sloths and monkeys, including variably colored saddleback tamarins, noisy and shaggy-tailed monk saki monkeys. Watch for an astounding variety of birds, from tanagers and hummingbirds to parrots and endangered scarlet macaws. In the river, look for massive paiche fish, the Amazon’s largest; rare pink dolphins; and the infamous piranhas.

slip through the forest in a skiff as night falls, using a spotlight to find caimans, frogs, fishing bats and other creatures of the night. Pay a visit to one of the communities on the reserve’s edge and get to know the ribereños, those who live on the riverbanks, and their age-old traditions. Meet local women and children, and watch them make jewelry and other handicrafts. Learn how local subsistence farmers cultivate wild plants and trees to earn income. Hear about how local residents find edible fruits and indigenous plants with medicinal properties hidden in the jungle. (B,L,D Daily) DAY 19: NAUTA/IQUITOS/LIMA Enjoy one last morning excursion by skiff to view wildlife. After lunch, disembark in Nauta, and return to Iquitos overland for a lateafternoon flight to Lima. Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel. (B,L) DAY 20: LIMA/U.S. After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)

Hoatzin. Enjoy an opportunity to swim in a lake in the reserve’s interior. Seek out Victoria amazonica, a giant water lily that grows in small lagoons. Go on a bird-watching hike, listening for the vocal oropendola and then looking for its telltale yellow tail. Watch the sun set and listen to a cacophonous symphony of nocturnal animals calling out across the treetops. Then

Curious squirrel monkey.

The initimate, 28-guest Delfin II.

EXTEND YOUR ADVENTURE This Upper Amazon + Galápagos expedition can also be combined with the Machu Picchu & Peru’s Land of the Inca program. Please call for details.
