Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have joined forces to further inspire the world through expedition travel. Our collaboration in exploration, research, technology and conservation will provide extraordinary travel experiences and disseminate geographic knowledge around the globe.

DEAR TRAVELER, 2016 will be quite a nostalgic year for us. On January 11, 1966, fifty years ago, my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad took the first intrepid travelers to Antarctica and ushered in a new age of exploration—opening up the world for laymen travelers to explore—not just through the pages of magazines or travel documentaries, but to actually participate themselves. It would be hard to underestimate the vision and the courage that took a half century ago, and all the possibilities which were opened as a result. Now we ask: what is 21st-century exploration? What is it that we seek as humans in our myriad exploits around the globe? The face of travel has changed a great deal on so many levels. Where do we go and what do we avoid? Do we travel to relax, or to seek inspiration? Do we travel to know more, to feel a greater connection with nature, or to see places that still retain cultural and historical integrity? Perhaps it’s all of the above. And with whom? Do we choose to travel with our families, our friends, or on our own? I certainly have seen a vastly greater desire for extended community, whether it be the community our guests take with them, or discover in seeking new kindred spirits. You, inevitably, have distinct views on all of these subjects. What I can offer you is the fact that we have, over this past half a century, developed a deep understanding of what’s possible, and what matters to people. Whether it’s the High Arctic, where the National Geographic Explorer spends most of the summer, the Galápagos Islands, full of wonder for people of all ages, or our highly curated voyages in Europe aboard the National Geographic Orion—our absolute goal and commitment is to provide you with the most thoughtful, fulfilling time we possibly can. So, if you have a spare week, two or three, we would very much like to have you in our company as we head out into the world—to explore its wonder and mystery.

1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348)

There is no such thing as not loving. Everybody loves. The only choice we get in this life is what to love. And perhaps a compelling reason for choosing to love travel is because it rewards you in ways pretty much nothing else does. The only thing to decide is what, in this coming season, to love: Civilization in the form of Europe? Wildness in the implacable purity of the high north? The wonders of eon-spanning Galápagos? Untamed Alaska? Or history written in Sea Cloud’s sails and her broad reach into ancient seas?

IF YOU LOVE EUROPE, EXPLORE WITH US FOR MORE OF WHAT YOU LOVE

T

ravelers who know us know we’re a relevant choice for exploring Europe. Other potential guests didn’t; they said: “You guys are the best; when it comes to any wild remote place on the planet, I’d go with you. But why would I need an expedition company to get to Europe?” I know we are the relevant choice for experiencing Europe, and here’s why: We are an exploration company, first and foremost. We believe we can give people an experience of exploration and discovery in Europe— one of the most visited geographies on earth—that is simply more inspiring, more meaningful, more comfortable, and more memorable than any other travel option. Why do I believe this? Because we have been exploring Europe, a region we collectively love, for decades on a variety of ships and now with the most suitable of all—the National Geographic Orion. National Geographic Orion. With just 102-guests, it is the perfect size for exploring Europe. While I do not wish to be critical of other “cruise” ships, being relatively small matters a great deal. The National Geographic Orion moves more like a yacht than a cruise ship, anchoring in small bays, or in the center of town. She’s a beautiful ship, too, providing a level of comfort and amenity equal to the European scenery, food and wine she voyages through and to.

Curation—research is key; accumulated knowledge from the past and being on top of what’s new. So, we thoroughly vet conditions, confer with locals and consult our own historic record and collective expertise. And by the way, that’s not solely to assure your safety, it’s also to assure maximum surprise and delight. When you find yourself enjoying, for instance, a striking alignment of view, ship position and sunset, it’s not a coincidence—it’s part of what our expedition teams do. We dedicated three teams of Experience Designers to our Europe 2.0 program, to go beyond what we’ve offered in the past, and what is currently available. They have been on the ground exploring since March 2015. As a result, our Europe itineraries are carefully designed to make the most of your time, curiosity and love for Europe.

BREAKING NEWS: Based on our guests’ creativity in combining voyages, we’ve added six new 2-week itineraries, complete with complimentary extensions. For more on this, visit expeditions.com/2wks, or speak to an Expedition Specialist.

Value. The prices for our Europe voyages include everything you can do, see, enjoy and experience. There are no extras to factor into your budget planning. Combine that with our special offers (see page 14), and I think you’ll see that value, combined with our recognized ability to provide exhilarating experiences, is your assurance of an extraordinary European adventure.

LOVE LETTER FROM THE NORTH ■ JENNIFER KINGSLEY, Lindblad Expeditions naturalist and field correspondent. Follow #meetthenorth on Instagram or on meetthenorth.com

E

va and I picked crowberries for most of the afternoon. We were on the tundra in early autumn, and the land was a carpet of fire. Light breeze. Blue sky. The kind of day you don’t forget. We’d planned on hiking up into the hills, but the berry bushes were so loaded we couldn’t help ourselves. “Paurngaqturumaviit?” I asked Eva over and over again, trying to make the words stick: “Would you like some crowberries?” My Inuktitut is laughable, but I’m learning; add learning to the list of things I love about my job. I’ve been given an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic mission by doing what I love: exploring the world and discovering the stories that bring it to life. The idea was born a year ago through a series of events that involved sea ice, a map, and one simple question from Sven Lindblad, “With our support, what would you create?” The answer has led me on an adventure to become the company’s first Field Correspondent, to go beyond the scope of mainstream journalism, and to bring home stories that can build our understanding of the world’s remote communities.

24

1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348)

I’m starting in the north, which is how I ended up picking crowberries with Eva, and my current project, Meet the North, extends around the pole. It’s about getting past the headlines and listening to some of the four million people who call the Arctic their home. It’s a privilege with a purpose because it’s the stories of everyday, extraordinary citizens that lead us to a clearer understanding of northern life. Local people have led me to the middle of the coal mining debate in Svalbard, the hunting culture of west Greenland, and Iceland’s changing agricultural landscape. I’ve milked cows, attended

birthday parties, danced for the elves, and debated renewable energy. With Eva, I’m learning what to gather from the land and how to speak about it. Everything looks different from the top of the world. Through this sponsorship, I get to travel on the National Geographic Explorer, which takes us to the Arctic’s front door, and I’ve become part of a community that encourages exploration and whose curiosity is never satisfied.

Clockwise from top left: Eva Aariak, former Premier of Nunavit, and author Jennifer Kingsley; icy landscape; local Ilulissat guide; L'Anse aux Meadows boardwalk; whales carved in natural stone outcrops, Greenland.

There is always a new challenge, and mine touches the heart of our mission: How can we inspire people to care about the planet? Sharing what we love is a good place to start.

“I am a child of the Canadian Maritimes, so this is my psychic home and my inspiration. Nova Scotia, where I grew up, is the setting for two of my novels, Burden of Desire and Portrait of Julia, and my memoir of childhood, Wordstruck; and it remains the doorway to my imagination. I spend summers there in our house on the Atlantic coast. So I am steeped in the history and romance of this corner of the New World settled by Europeans as early as 1604, my mother’s family arriving in 1750. I grew up with the sea. The sea was my father’s work on Royal Canadian Mounted Police patrol boats during Prohibition chasing rum-runners over the waters we will sail. In WWII, he commanded a series of warships protecting convoys in the Battle of the Atlantic. My brother Hugh became an Admiral in the Canadian Navy, and I am an amateur cruising sailor. So, the sea is in our bones, and I love to tell the stories of how it shaped four centuries of our history.” — Robert MacNeil

GALÁPAGOS: ENDLESSLY ■ STACY SINDLINGER, Director of Artisan Development, The Artisan Fund

I

n 2006 Sven Lindblad was in Puerto Ayora, the largest populated center in the Galápagos Islands, shopping. But he couldn’t find anything to buy that had any connection to Galápagos, or even Ecuador, which is what interested him. He wondered how that could be, arrived at an idea, and the rest is history: Lindblad Expeditions became the only travel company with a self-run program, philanthropically committed to economically supporting the artisan communities in the regions we explore—through the Lindblad ExpeditionsNational Geographic Artisan Fund.

Stacy Sindlinger.

I joined LEX as Director of Artisan Development in 2007 to found our program, which in Galápagos, was shaped by unique conditions: the small existing community of Galápagos artisans imported all their materials; and Galápagos is 97% National Park, so all consumer waste has to be exported to the mainland. If we could help local artisans adaptively re-use Galápagos’ trash, we could alleviate an environmental burden and produce economic benefits. Since glass was a bulky waste category to manage, it was our ideal target. New Yorker, John Gilvey, one of the foremost master glass artisans in America, was captured by the challenge and generously donated his time and expertise to the effort. With his participation, we installed equipment and conducted a series of workshops for Galápagos artisans to teach them how to turn glass waste into objects of beauty and utility. Since 2007 many artisans have come through the program successfully—two of whom have gone on to win state and local awards—and more have trained annually through school vocational programs and community workshops. Artisan Clovis Patiño, a significant success story, demonstrated not only great creative talent, but also enterprising acumen: he 30

has generated sufficient profit to open his own studio and gallery, and employ a small work force of artisans. He has also evolved as a leader. Working with John Gilvey, he opened the Artisan Fund’s second facility and now conducts workshops on a second island, San Cristóbal. He will also be instrumental in expanding the Artisan program to Baja California and training Mexican artisans next year. The human success stories are gratifying, as is the impact on waste management in this protected archipelago. But a by-product of the program that fills me with great joy is how rapidly this program has infused the Galápagos Artisan community with a Glass jewelry. renewed identity. In addition to being custodians of one of the world’s natural treasures, they now see themselves as pioneers in defining their country and their culture in terms of adaptive reuse. So when you explore Galápagos with us, if you’re inclined to purchase something in our onboard Gallery or Market, just think: shopping can be transformative! As we go to press: The Artisan Fund was just presented with an award from Provincial Craftsman Defense Board of Ecuador/Galápagos in recognition of the help and support provided them over the years. From Stacy: “... appreciation from the Artisans themselves?… the ultimate.”

FINDING MAGIC IN BAJA ■ CLAUDIA KANNE, aboard National Geographic Sea Lion in Baja’s Sea of Cortez

W

hy do I travel alone? To let the magic in. Don’t get me wrong, I love sharing adventures with my husband, but when we get home it’s still the same old Laurel and Hardy routine where we’re bantering back and forth, and finishing each other’s sentences. Once a year I need to find my true self. I need to become part of something bigger than the day-to-day obligations and rituals that tend to tether us to our daily lives. For a few weeks every year, I need to leave my life behind and find my place in the universe. I need to humble myself before God’s creations and witness the fruits of his labors. I need to get in touch with my senses, to feel and laugh and learn and make new friends. That’s when the magic happens… and I’m overcome with an overwhelming sense of unconditional love of life.

This year it happened in the Sea of Cortez on the National Geographic Sea Bird. It was my first trip with them. I went to smell the sea, to taste its salt, study the stars, run with whales, and swim with sea lions. I did it all, and so much more. If I had any fears about traveling alone, they disappeared by the time I checked in at the airport. Lindblad Expeditions had already made all arrangements for me including air travel, tickets, insurance, baggage and nametags. Everything I needed arrived in the mail before I left. All I had to do was pack a bag and make sure my passport was up to date. At the airport a Lindblad representative

34

immediately spotted my luggage tags and assisted me with checkin. In La Paz, we were met by two more Lindblad representatives and escorted to the ship. On the Sea Bird, our needs were met by an incredible staff which included a photo instructor, undersea specialist, four naturalists, a wellness specialist and a video chronicler. And in case of some unforeseen emergency, a ship’s physician. Dinners were a time to come together and share the unique, oncein-a-lifetime, events of the day. There were barbeques on the beach that went on long after the cloak of darkness enveloped us. It was a time for guitars, and songs, and storytelling. A time for toasting marshmallows, making s’mores and staring endlessly into bonfire flames. It was a time for bonding and for a brief moment, for creating a new reality devoid of the everyday turmoil that drags us down and steals our strength.

So why do I travel alone? Maybe it’s my form of therapy. Without the interruptions of daily life, I’m able to see more clearly, through hungry eyes, and when that happens, all is right with the world. At least my world. And I can go home and face the challenges I left behind, most of which have resolved themselves in my absence. But there’s something else: When I go home, my husband and friends study me quizzically. I’m different. Happier, more alive! And because of that, they treat me differently. They want to know my secret so they listen intently to what I have to say. No one interrupts or changes the subject. My husband doesn’t finish my sentences because he doesn’t know how the story ends! For once, I have their undivided attention. I smile as they hang on my every word but I also wonder if they’ll ever really comprehend what it’s all about. I wonder if they’ll ever give themselves permission to find their place in the universe, to let the magic in, and for a brief moment, touch the stars. WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM 35

“Later, cloaked in the light of our dying fire, we listened to the creak of cactuses swaying in the wind… Somewhere out in the boulders, a coyote wailed beneath a spray of cold stars… ‘This is the stuff that keeps you coming back to Baja,’ Norman said quietly. ‘The primitiveness, the aloneness of it. My problem is I never get tired of it. It seems like my compass always points south.’” — Don Belt, “Baja California: Mexico’s Land Apart,” National Geographic Magazine, December 1989

MAKING LASTING CONNECTIONS ■ MARC CAPPELLETTI, Director of Expedition Development

R

arely are as many hugs given on our voyages as when we say goodbye to the cultural interpreters who accompany us in Haida Gwaii. National Geographic Sea Bird and Sea Lion are only in and among the islands of Haida Gwaii for three days of a two-week journey, but something happens in that short time beyond answered questions, full memory cards or marks on travelers’ checklists. Sound strange? Three years ago I felt the same way. Although I had been to the islands several times with Stacy Sindlinger, our Director of Artisan Development, to plan the upcoming trips, I didn’t know how they would go in actuality. Neither did the people of Haida Gwaii. This was new for them too, as no outside vessel had called into the southern islands, Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site, in two decades. While help in developing our voyages came in many forms— from community leaders to Parks Canada management to a waitress who recommended a great hike near the Heritage Center—none have done so much to guide us through these “islands in the edge of the world” as the cultural interpreters we engage to provide guidance and a personal perspective throughout the trip. They are Haida: scholarly

in their understanding, but warm and insightful and patient in their teaching. They have lived their history and embrace the present. They work for a brighter future. They share stories—of their lives, of their ancestors, of hopes and concerns. They’re fun. They are: Linda, Vince, Barbara, Elsie. The connection they establish with guests leads to many things. As I travel on our expeditions, I hear laughter, questions galore, and the profound silence of pure awe. I’ve even seen tears. While the islands don’t offer the drama of crashing glaciers (which you’ll see elsewhere in the voyage) our visits there provide interactions that can be just as powerful. Walking with these men and women in their ancestral home and hearing their stories can tug at your soul—in a lasting way.

Now, two years into our visits, I get most excited when standing in the dock in the early morning, just as the sun is coming up and the ship approaches the dock in Queen Charlotte City. When the cultural interpreters arrive, I’ll walk over to greet them and we’ll hug. I’ve missed them. Every time I feel the pull to stay as if they’ve slipped a magnet in my pocket. Arriving guests who see these exchanges inevitably ask how long I’ve lived on the islands. I’ll tell them that I don’t, I’ve just become drawn to this place and its people over the years. Then I’ll watch as they greet the interpreters with courteous handshakes and smiles. I love it. Because I know what they’ll experience; and how they’ll say goodbye. And I know that this kind of bond could happen nowhere else but Haida Gwaii. WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM 39

“ ...A THING OF BEAUTY, AND A MASTERPIECE OF SEAMANSHIP.” ■ TOM O’BRIEN, Expedition Leader

A

fter a stunning evening passage under the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion the night before, it was difficult to believe the reports of a southwesterly gale on its way through the Cycladic Islands the following morning. But when we woke this morning, Aeolus the God of Winds was making a statement, and the winds were already fierce when Sea Cloud set the sails at 0800. We were all amazed to see the roaring whitecaps on either side of the ship and the winds shrieking through the rigging, yet Sea Cloud was unbelievably stable and steady as Captain Pushkarev called for the lower and upper topsails and the courses to be set. In such a strong wind, only the strongest of the square sails were needed to harness the forces of nature. Sea Cloud was built by Marjorie Merriweather Post and E. F. Hutton in 1931; and as a sailor Hutton had seen to it that her hull design and construction were state of the art. Today, her stability amazed us, and we could now understand why the US Navy posted her in the turbulent North Atlantic during her service in WWII. The sailors were all smiles and excitement as Sea Cloud roared up to 10 knots, finally

42

1.800.EXPEDITION (1.800.397.3348)

peaking at 11.6 knots in the mid-morning. Captain Pushkarev had calculated for a mighty full-day sail of about 60 miles before we would shelter from the height of the gale in the afternoon at the island of Syros. But a square-rigger has no brakes, and we had to wear ship ( jibe) a few times just to try to slow down and avoid overshooting our island harbor destination. This was indeed first-rate sailing, and we

Clockwise from left: Tom O’Brien; relaxing after dinner as the sun sets; checking the lines; one of the original Owner’s Suites, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s cabin when she was on board.

were all filled with excitement as we tried to find our favorite places on this elegant vessel. We all knew we were sharing in something very special, that most people cannot imagine still exists in this day and age. We were all on deck with the wind roaring at the harbor entrance, unsuspecting of the unforgettable action that would follow, as the Captain calculated how he intended to bring the ship into the tricky harbor of Ermoupolis in near-gale winds. It was a thing of beauty, and a masterpiece of seamanship. Captain Pushkarev had braced the yards to port tack and was planning to have the wind push the ship broadside into the dock on the starboard side. However, an unexpected construction barge occupied half the pier, and the winds were pushing forward faster than anticipated. With decisive and authoritative commands that dominated even the winds, Captain Pushkarev steered Sea Cloud to the middle of the harbor, dropped the port

anchor so that the ship swung quickly around 180 degrees in front of the awestruck eyes of the entire city, then powered the ship forward up into the wind while raising the anchor again. As the bow neared the pier and the ship wrestled the winds, he then dropped the starboard anchor and the crew scrambled to heave the mooring lines and fenders on the opposite side of the ship than expected, as the winds set her gently into the pier. It was the equivalent of a high-speed skidding sports car parking job, in a classic and elegant squarerigged ship. When it was over, no one could quite believe what we had just seen, and we all shared the recounting of the events to piece it all together. Captain Pushkarev calmly stepped off the bridge, thanked the sailors, and went to prepare for his Welcome Cocktail Party on the Lido Deck 30 minutes later. All in a day’s work, but what a start to this voyage… WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM 43
