SYNOPSIS KEYWORDS: MULTITUDE, ABJECTION, COMMONWEALTH, INTERSTITIAL SPACES, INFRASTRUCTURE, SHARED DETERRITORIALISATION, DOMESTICITY, AFFECT, SUBJECTIVITY, QUEER.

1. IN DELEUZE’S TERMS, HIS CARTOGRAPHIC APPROACH TO SUBJECTIVITY AND HIS REFLECTIONS ON CONTROL AND TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL OF BECOMING, BRINGS OUT THE IMMANENCE – I.E. THE “BECOMING”. THE PROPOSED INFRASTRUCTURAL HOST SEEKS TO EXPLORE A SERIES OF POSSIBILITIES PRODUCED BY ANY ACT OF BECOMING – NOMAD, INDISCERNIBLE, QUEER, GREEN, OBJECT, IMPERCEPTIBLE – WHERE EACH TYPE OF AFFECTIVE BECOMING MARKS NEW PROCESSES OF DERRITORIALIZATION.

BUILDING TYPOLOGIES FAIL. AS MOORES LAW, ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND MARKET FORCES PROPEL OUR SOCIETY AHEAD, OUR ENVIRONMENT CAN NO LONGER KEEP UP WITH OUR INCESSANT DESIRES FOR SPACE AND COMFORT. PAVING THE WAY TO PARADISE AND OUR EXPLORATION OF WHAT COMFORT IS, WE PURGE WHAT WE PERCEIVE AS UGLY, FILTHY, SINFUL, TABOO, DEFILEMENT – THE ABJECT – OUTSIDE OF OURSELVES. YET TODAY, AS WE BECOME LIBERATED FROM FIXED IDENTITIES (THROUGH THE CONSTANT REPOSITIONING OF OURSELVES WITHIN THE LARGER GEOPOLITICAL CONTEXT), CAPITALISM HAS HIDDEN AND DISCRIMINATED THESE VITAL ELEMENTS THAT MAINTAIN OUR ECOLOGY AND SOCIETAL POWER BALANCE. THIS PROJECT IS AN EXTENSION OF THE URBAN DESIGN, IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE AND COMMON GROUND. IT IS AN INFRASTRUCTURE, A BUILDING BLOCK HOST, AN ALTERNATIVE BUILDING TECHNIQUE, A SHARED DETERRITORIAL SPACE FOR INSERTION OF DWELLINGS AND AN INQUIRY OF WHAT IS TO COME1. THIS MANIFESTS ITSELF INTO A CLUSTER OF AFFECTS – A SEEMINGLY IMPENETRABLE, THICK AND DENSE STRUCTURE RISING UP FROM THE GIRDER IN JURONG EAST, BETWEEN THE EXISTING BLOCKS PROPOSED BY COMMON GROUND, TO ALLOW FOR MODES OF EXPANSION, PROPAGATION, OCCUPATION, CONTAGION AND ‘PEOPLING’. IT PERFORMS AS A STRONG BUILDING CORE TO MEDIATE THE BINARY BETWEEN BUILDING BLOCKS AND LEFT OVER ATRIUM SPACES, HOUSE BUILDING SERVICES, MAINTAIN AN URBAN ECOLOGY, PROPAGATES DWELLING UNITS TO LATCH ON AND DISALLOWS A NORMATIVE ROOM TO ROOM SPACE PLANNING. LIKE LANGUAGES PRIOR TO WORDS, ITS PERVASIVE PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION IS A FORM OF INDIRECT SPEECH THAT IS PERCEIVED BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT WAYS. AS REFUGE SEEKERS COLONISE THESE SERVICE SPACES FOR OFFICE BLOCKS, THEY ASSEMBLE AND DISMANTLE THEIR DEPLOYABLE UNITS WHILE EXPELLING EXHAUST AIR, GREY AND SOIL WATER OUT TO NOURISH/HARM THE ENVIRONMENT. THROUGH THIS NOTION OF THE ABJECT (OUTSIDE) AND COMFORT (INSIDE), THE THESIS ANTICIPATES AN ANTHROPOCENE THAT BRINGS OUT NEW BODIES AND COMMUNITIES. THE “JUNGLE” WITHIN THE PROPOSED ARCHITECTURE, THEREFORE, IS NEVER AN IMITATION OF NATURE. IT IS A SET OF CONDITION THAT IS SET-UP TO EXPAND/ CONTRACT WITH OR WITHOUT INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT. THROUGH THE SAMENESS AND STRUCTURAL “CHAOS”, DIFFERENCES ARE CELEBRATED.

“…WHEREVER THERE IS MULTIPLICITY, YOU WILL ALSO FIND AN EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL, AND IT IS WITH THAT INDIVIDUAL THAT AN ALLIANCE MUST BE MADE IN ORDER TO BECOME – ANIMAL. THERE MAY BE NO SUCH THING AS A LONE WOLF, BUT THERE IS A LEADER OF THE PACK, A MASTER OF THE PACK…” – GILLES DELEUZE, FELIX GUATTARI, A THOUSAND PLATEAUS, 1992. -POWER BALANCETHIS PROJECT IS BUILT UPON THE TWO URBAN DESIGN PROPOSED IN THE PREVIOUS SEMESTER. THE COMBINED URBAN DESIGN IS AN EMERGING DENSE URBAN ENVIRONMENT WHICH SITUATES ITSELF WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF NEOLIBERAL ARCHITECTURE. EXTENDING ITSELF WITHIN THE HEART OF SINGAPORE’S FUTURE SECOND CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, IT FEATURES A PERVASIVE STRUCTURE WHICH CREATES A FLATTENED SITE TO FACILITATE CURRENCY EXCHANGE AND PROGRAMMATIC FLUX. WHILE THIS HOPES TO CULTIVATE A “PLACE AND SPACE FOR EVERYONE IN THE CITY”, IT PRESUMED PEOPLE’S ABILITY TO APPROPRIATE, TO BE DISCIPLINED AND TO LOVE. THE EARLIER DISCUSSION IN THE FIRST PART HAS ESTABLISHED THE NEED FOR A CREATIVE ECONOMY AND A PRODUCTIVE SOCIETY BORNE WITHIN THE MULTITUDE. WITHIN THE HEGEMONY OF OUR NEOLIBERAL CAPITAL SYSTEM, THIS WOULD MEAN THAT THE DIALECTICS BETWEEN THE CONTROLLING ELITES AND WORKING CLASS MUST BE MAINTAINED AND BALANCED. IN FOUCAULT’S TERMS, THIS MEANS MAINTAINING POWER RELATIONS: THE RULING RULE OVER THE COMMONS AND THE WORKING CLASS

RESIST AGAINST IT. THIS WOULD ENABLE A CONSTANT PRODUCTION OF SUBJECTIVITIES BY BOTH SUBJECTS – PRODUCING ASSETS AND CAPITAL (BOTH MATERIALS AND IMMATERIAL). PERHAPS UNDER THE DISCIPLINE SOCIETY AND THE SOCIETY OF CONTROL, THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED THROUGH ENABLING LOVE AS A POLITICAL FUNCTION, TO PRODUCE SUBJECTIVITY AS PROPOSED BY KEVIN HARDT.

FURTHERMORE, AS WE ANTICIPATE THE EMERGING ANTHROPOCENE AFFECTED BY THE MARKET, ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND EXPONENTIAL INCREASE IN TECHNOLOGY1, EXISTING ASSUMPTIONS OF A CBD NO LONGER HOLDS. OUR CURRENT SOCIETAL STRUCTURE IN TERMS OF SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS HAS BEEN DISRUPTED AND DISORDERED, WHEREAS THE TRANSFORMATION OF OUR WORKPLACE, POLITICS, GEOPOLITICS, AND ETHICS IS ACCELERATING AND RESHAPING THE WAY WE BEHAVE AND FORM COMMUNITIES. NEW SPECIES HAVE THUS EMERGED. THEY ARE HYBRIDS; OR MORE LIKE CROSS-BREEDS. THEY CAN HOP FROM ONE COMMUNITY TO THE OTHER, THEY CAN SHAPE-SHIFT, THEY CAN ADAPT, THEY CAN ADOPT, THEY ARE STATIC OR CONSTANTLY ON THE MOVE. THEY FORM VARIOUS CULTURES, CLIQUES, FORMING AND REFORM NEW COMMUNITIES, THEY ALSO FORM IDENTITIES, SHARING COLLECTIVE MEMORIES. THEY ARE STARVING TO DEFINE THEMSELVES, THEY WANT TO EXPRESS THEIR EXISTENTIALITY AND TO CREATE A “PLACELESSNESS” FOR THEIR OWN. THEY CONNECT, THEY CONVERGE, THEY BREAK THE TRADITIONAL BOUNDARY OF SPACE, CONSTANTLY SEEKS TO EXPAND THE BOUNDARY, TO SEEK COMFORT. THEIR WORLD IS NO LONGER FLAT. BOUNDARIES NO LONGER BECOMES CLEAR2. THE NEW PHENOMENON SEEMS TO SUGGEST MOBILITY, CONNECTIVITY AND CURRENCY EXCHANGE. IT IS AN EXPLORATION OF A TERRITORY,

AND A WORLD CONSTRUED AND CONSTRUCTED BY OUR THOUGHTS AND IMAGES. PREMISED ON THIS VERY HEART OF THE MULTITUDE THAT MAKES THE SOCIETY SUBJECTIVELY EFFICIENT AND OBJECTIVELY ANTAGONISTIC, THIS PROJECT POSITS A NEW WAY OF BUILDING BY INSERTING AGENCY INTO ARCHITECTURAL BUILDING TECHNIQUE. ARCHITECTURE BECOMES A PRODUCTIVE SITE FOR PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF LABOUR, GOODS AND SPECTACLE – IN A MANNER THAT IS AFFECTIVE.

-ABJECT CAPITALUNDER THE GLOSSY SHEEN OF CAPITALISM AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT, THE FILTH AND THE DIRT BEHIND THIS IMAGE SEEM TO DISAPPEAR FROM THE ILLUSION OF THE PRIM AND PROPER SOCIETY. CAPITALISM DISCRIMINATES AGAINST AND HIDE THESE PROCESSES. YET THEY ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE FUNCTIONING OF THIS SOCIETY TO BE PRODUCTIVE, HEALTHY AND CLEAN, AND KEPT IN BALANCE. HOWEVER, THE ABJECT IS KILLED BY MODERNITY AND CAPITALISM HAS SUCKED THE VALUES OF THE ABJECT ENCOUNTERS. IN THE ASPIRATION TOWARDS CONSTRUCTING THE “BEAUTIFUL” IMAGERY OF THE CITY, WE EXCLUDE THE ABJECT. AS BAUMAN HAS ARGUED, WE HAVE TRANSFORMED INTO SURFACE-OBJECTS BY MEDIA, “EMPTY AND FAKE”. SOCIETY BECOMES ALIENATED. WITHIN THIS FRAMEWORK OF NEOLIBERAL CAPITALISM, COULD WE FREE THE POTENTIALITY OF ARCHITECTURE TO TRANSFORM THE WAY WE BEHAVE AND THINK? SIMULTANEOUS TO THIS CENTRAL PATERNAL SOCIAL ORDER, OUR VISUAL CULTURE GOVERNS THAT THE ABJECT WILL ALWAYS BE EXCLUDED OUTSIDE. HERE, INDIVIDUAL ASSOCIATIONS AND IDENTITIES UNDERGO AN “OTHERING” PROCESS WHEREBY INDIVIDUALS ATTEMPT

OPPOSITE BECOMING-OBJECT SPECTACLE OF AN ALIENATED SOCIETY.

“THESE BODILY FLUIDS, THIS DEFILEMENT, THIS SHIT ARE WHAT LIFE WITHSTANDS, HARDLY AND WITH DIFFICULTY, ON THE PART OF DEATH…MY BODY EXTRICATES ITSELF, AS BEING ALIVE, FROM THAT BORDER” – JULIA KRISTEVA TO DEFINE AND PROTECT HIS/HER IDENTITY – THE FILTH, THE UGLY, THE DEFILEMENT, THE SIN, THE TABOO, THE REJECTION – THE ABJECT WHICH ONE IS VOLATILE TO AND EXCLUDED FROM THE SOCIAL NORMS. IN THIS CASE, ACCORDING TO ANTHROPOLOGIST NAVARO-YASHIN, THE ABJECT, THE GROTESQUE, AND FILTH IS BASED ON AN IMAGINATION OF A “BORDER”. THE ABJECT IS A REPRESENTATION OF A MENTAL SPACE WITHIN PERSONAL SUBJECTIVITIES, WHICH ARE AGAINST ONE’S DEFINED IDENTITY. IT IS A BOUNDARY THAT PROTECTS AND CHALLENGES IDENTITY AT THE SAME TIME. WE READ THE ABJECT AS THE “OTHER”, ONE THAT IS OPPOSED TO THE “I”. FOR INSTANCE, OUR WASTE, THE UNPLEASANT, THE SUBVERSIVE, THE SOCIETAL HOUSEKEEPERS, WE DO NOT WANT SEE IT NOR THINK ABOUT IT. THESE FIGURES AND PROCESSES ARE REAL AND ARE NECESSARY FOR OUR SYSTEM TO SURVIVE. YET, THEY ARE DISCRIMINATED AND MARGINALIZED. PREMISED ON THE FRAMEWORK OF NEOLIBERAL CAPITAL SYSTEM AND HOW IT HAS DISCRIMINATED THE “OTHER”, WHICH IRONICALLY IS NEEDED FOR THE ENTIRE SYSTEM TO FUNCTION, WE BEGIN TO EXPLORE WAYS TO BRING CLOSER THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE ABJECT. THIS ENCOUNTER ENGAGES WITH DESIRES, THE AFFECT, AND OUR PERCEPTION THROUGH THE NARRATIVES OF THE EVERYDAY BANAL AND SUBVERSIVE3. AS WE CONSIDER CONSTRUCTED SPACES, PROHIBITED ZONES, AND BACK ALLEYS, WE ARE UNCOVERING THE “OTHER” AND ATTEMPT TO SEEK THE PLEASANT IN THE “UNPLEASANT”.

3. “How clearly the chaos of the city of capitalism, of the mix of productive and non-productive bodies can overcome city walks”

THE LINE OF ENQUIRY EXPOUNDS ON THE AMBIVALENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN US AND THE ABJECT. WHEREAS THE ABJECT PRODUCES FEAR IN PEOPLE, WE BEGIN TO EXAMINE THE DESIRES FLOWING THROUGH ABJECT SITES; WHEREBY IT BECOMES THE LIVING APRON FOR THE SOCIETY AND FOR THE CBD, WHERE DIRTY COLLIDES WITH THE CLEAN.

-CLOSING SPATIAL BINARIES – REFUGE IN THE REFUSEAMIDST THE UNCERTAINTY AND CHANGE IN THE JURONG-EAST, AN INFRASTRUCTURAL HOST RISES UP FROM THE GIRDER AND FORMS PART OF THE BECOMING-IMPERCEPTIBLE. AS EACH MODULE PROLIFERATES AND REPEATS ITSELF UPWARDS, SUPPORTING BEAMS EXTRUDES TO ALLOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF OFFICE BLOCKS, THEREBY SANDWICHING BY THE SIDES. TENSILE STABILITY IS ALSO SUPERIMPOSED ONTO THE EXISTING COMPRESSION SYSTEM FROM THE GIRDER TO MAKE THE SKELETAL CONSTRUCTION CHEAP AND LIGHT. THIS CLOSES THE BINARY BETWEEN THE OFFICE BLOCK AND GIRDER IN THE PREVIOUS URBAN DESIGN, COMMON

GROUND. AS THE STRUCTURAL SKELETON GROWS UP THE GIRDER TO PROVIDE MEDIATION AND INTERMITTENT STRUCTURAL SUPPORT FOR THE OFFICE BLOCKS, IT RESULTS IN A RELATIONSHIP REVERSAL BETWEEN THE INFRASTRUCTURE (OF PARASITE BECOMING HOST) AND OFFICE BLOCK (OF HOST BECOMING PARASITE). I.E. OFFICE BLOCKS DEVELOPS ONLY AFTER THE INFRASTRUCTURE HAS PROLIFERATED ACROSS THE NEW CBD. THE RESULTING “ATRIUM” DUE TO THE SANDWICH BY THE OFFICE BLOCKS THEN TRANSFORMS INTO INTERSTITIAL SPACES. NESTLING WITHIN THIS SANDWICH, ARE USABLE SPACES WHERE BUILDING

SERVICES, PIPES, WATER SUPPLIES, AIR EXCHANGE SYSTEMS – PHYSICAL ORGANS NEEDED FOR THE FUNCTIONING OF THE BUILDING – ARTICULATES AND SPROUTS IN THIS “OUTSIDE SPACE”, SUPPORTED BY A SYSTEM OF SKELETON CALLED VERTEBRATE

JUNGLE SKELETON. THIS IS MADE UP BY A MODULAR REPETITION OF SINGULAR COMPONENT SPANNING 3 FLOORS HIGH AND 10 METERS LONG. THROUGH THE SAMENESS OF THE PATTERN CREATED, IT FACILITATES CURRENCY EXCHANGE AND CONNECTIONS FOR THE PEOPLE TO BRING OUT THE DIFFERENCES WITHIN THE MULTITUDE ON SITE. CIRCULATION STAIRS PROPAGATES SIMULTANEOUSLY TO FORM A NEW SYSTEMS OF ACCESS WITHIN THE DENSE INFRASTRUCTURE TO BRING CLOSER THE ABJECT AS AN URBAN ENCOUNTER. EMERGING OUT FROM THIS “NAUSEATING SCENT” OF THE ABJECT ZONE, THE JUNGLE OF PIPES, SERVICES FURTHER TRANSFORM INTO A SITE OF DISPLACEMENT, TRANSFORMATION, OF “BECOMING”. AS WE DESIGN NEW CONSTRUCTED ENTITIES FOR PROGRAMMATIC EXPANSION, THE INFRASTRUCTURE MANIFESTS INTO A CLUSTER OF AFFECTS. THEY ARE LIKE LANGUAGES PRIOR TO WORDS, AS A FORM OF INDIRECT SPEECH THAT IS PERCEIVED BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT WAYS. THESE AFFECTS ARE OPEN RATHER THAN TOWARDS ANYTHING SPECIFICALLY, IMPLYING THE SHIFTING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARCHITECTS AND USERS. ARCHITECTURE IN THIS SENSE DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING NOW EXCEPT FOR BEING A SITE WHERE EVENTS OCCUR. IN THIS NEW SYSTEM OF REFUSE, AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE REFUGE ARISES. THE LEFT-OVER INTERSTITIAL SPACES BETWEEN SERVICES, PIPES, CIRCULATION, AND OFFICE BLOCKS TRANSFORMS INTO DWELLING DEPLOYMENT BAYS FOR URBAN DWELLERS, OR REFUGE SEEKERS. THESE REFUGE SEEKERS WOULD BRAVE THROUGH THIS

THICK JUNGLE TO SEEK SPACES OF PHYSICAL SOLITAIRE AND INNER PRIVACY. THEY BEGIN TO COLONISE SPACES WITHIN THE SKELETON IN-BETWEEN THE OFFICE BLOCKS, INSCRIBING THE ECONOMY OF DESIRE. IN THE DEPLOYMENT BAYS, THEY WOULD ASSEMBLE THEIR INDIVIDUAL DEPLOYABLE DWELLING UNITS, WHICH ARE MADE AS KIT-OF-PARTS, READILY AVAILABLE OFF THE SHELVES AT IKEA. IN THESE UNITS, DWELLERS ENJOY A COMFORTABLE AND CONVIVIAL INDOOR SPACE FOR THEMSELVES, ONE THAT IS IN STARK CONTRAST WITH THE OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT. IN RETURN, THEY WOULD NEED TO PURGE AND EXPEL THEIR WASTE VIA THE SERVICE PIPES PROVIDED TO NOURISH THE GARDEN SPACES AND EXHAUST THEIR DIRTY AIR BACK TO THE ENVIRONMENT – OUTSIDE OF THEIR OWN “LIVABLE SPACES”.

THIS CYCLE AND PHYSICAL EXPRESSION ALREADY IMPLIES A

DETERRITORIALISED SITE AND GENERATES A SPACE WITH IDENTITIES LIBERATED FROM DWELLERS. STRADDLING IN THE IN-BETWEEN, IT IS A COEXISTENCE OF THE TWO SYSTEMS: THE REFUSE (THE ABJECT, THE FILTH, AND POTENTIAL SUBVERSIVE BEHAVIOURS) AND THE REFUGE (THE DESIRES, THE COMFORTABLE, AND THE CLEAN). IT CONVERTS THE INFRASTRUCTURE INTO ANDROGYNOUS SPACES AND AN AMORPHOUS MEDIATION ON THE EFFECTS OF DIRTY AND CLEAN – ONE THAT REQUIRES A COEXISTENCE TO THRIVE. THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE “LINE OF BLOCK” OF BECOMING”4 THAT UNITES THE WASP AND THE ORCHID TO PRODUCE A SHARED DETERRITORIALISATION – “OF THE WASP, IT BECOMES A LIBERATED PIECE OF THE ORCHID’S REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM, BUT ALSO OF THE ORCHID, IN THAT IT BECOMES THE OBJECT OF AN ORGASM IN THE WASP, ALSO LIBERATED FROM ITS OWN REPRODUCTION.”

4. Wasp attempting to mate with an orchid - “The line or block of becoming that units the wasp and the orchid produces a shared deterrirorialization: of the wasp, in that it becomes a liberated piece of the orchid’s reproductive system, but also of the orchid, in that it becomes the object of an orgasm in the wasp, also liberated from its own reproduction…” – Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, A thousand plateaus, 1992. THIS ENVIRONMENT OF REFUGE WHERE DWELLERS APPROPRIATE THE RESULTING ATRIUM SPACE, IS AN ARTICULATION OF THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPACES THAT EVOLVED FROM US AND THE AFFECTIVE. IT URGES US TO INDULGE AND TO ADMIT TO ALL OUR DESIRES FOR SUBVERSION. WHILE THIS NEW SYSTEM OPERATES AND FUNCTIONS IN THE AUTHORITATIVE CAPITAL POWER, AS RANCIÈRE PUTS IT, WE ARE ABSORBED INTO THIS “BEAST” – THAT OF IMMATERIAL PRODUCTION. EVEN WHEN OUR CAPABILITIES FOR SUBVERSIVE PRACTICES AND THE NETWORKS OF INTERACTION COUNTERS AGAINST AUTHORITATIVE CAPITAL POWER, WE ARE STILL SIMPLY OBEYING THE MARKET LAW: INDULGING AND CONSUMING IN THE NEW “GAMES” AVAILABLE, TO EXPERIMENT ON OUR OWN LIVES. THEREFORE, THE REFUSE AND REFUGE RENDERS THE SITE INTO A BODY OF CEASELESS EXPERIMENTATION. LIKE HOW THESE NEW SPECIES ARE CONSTANTLY TESTING AND TRANSFORMING THE SITE’S POTENTIAL. AS A FERTILE GROUND FOR INFINITE POSSIBILITIES, A DEPLOYABLE DWELLING UNIT OFF IKEA SHELVES OFFERS, AT THE CHEAPEST PRICE, THE MOST DESIRABLE OF COMMODITIES: THE CAPACITY OF EXPERIMENT WITH ONE’S LIFE, OFFERING TO CONSTRUCT AN ALTERNATIVE REALITY OF THEIR OWN DESIRES. IN THE PROCESS TO PAVE THE WAY FOR OUR OWN PARADISE AND COMFORT, WE PURGE THE ABJECT. AS WE UNCOVER (OR RATHER, ALLOW) THE CITY BECOMING-OTHER, WE EXPOSE THIS CYCLE BETWEEN OURSELVES AND THE ENVIRONMENT, TO BRING CLOSER THE ENCOUNTER OF THE ABJECT, WHICH COULD BE BEAUTIFUL, TERRIBLE, DANGEROUS. THIS PROGRAMMATIC SYSTEM RESULTS IN A VERY PRAGMATIC, PRACTICAL AND CHEAP ENVIRONMENT THAT PRODUCES AFFECT TO THE PEOPLE OF JURONG-EAST, PROVOKING A RETHINK ABOUT THE EXISTING BUILDING TECHNIQUES FOR A CBD.

-NEW ECOLOGYINFRASTRUCTURE DOMINATES AND IMMATERIAL PRODUCTION IS INDUCED TO THRIVE. THIS PROJECT ANTICIPATES AN ANTHROPOCENE WHEREBY THERE IS A SHIFT IN BOTH OCCUPANCY AND THE EMERGENCE OF NEW FIELDS AND PRACTICES. IT POSTULATES AN INCREASING INFORMAL USE OF SPACES AND AN ESCAPE IN NORMATIVE STANDARDIZED WAY OF BUILDING. UNDERLYING THIS PROJECT IS AN AGENDA TO QUESTION THE “BECOMING” OF A PRODUCTIVE SOCIETY, HOW BUILDINGS ADOPT IN RELATION TO EMERGING SHIFTING COMMUNITIES, AND WHAT THE RESULTING ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSIONS ARE. IN THIS CASE, URBAN DWELLERS/ REFUGE SEEKERS ARRIVE ON SITE TO ASSEMBLE AND DISMANTLE THEIR DWELLINGS BY THEMSELVES. AS WE CELEBRATE THE MANY MULTITUDES, THE PROJECT EXAMINES THE APPRENTICESHIP PROCESS – ONE THAT TEACHES HOW TO APPROPRIATE, HOW TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AND HOW TO BE CREATIVE – THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION OF THE SKELETON AND THE SERVICES, ALBEIT IT BEING POTENTIALLY FOREBODING. HOWEVER, THE LANGUAGE ITSELF IS ABOUT NEGOTIATING THROUGH “EXPANSION, PROPAGATION, OCCUPATION, CONTAGION AND ‘PEOPLING5’”. AFTER ALL, THE MULTITUDE IS AN OBSESSIVE ACCUMULATION WHERE ONE CANNOT COUNT NOR COMPREHEND.

POSTSCRIPT AS I SAT DOWN TO REFLECT UPON THIS PROJECT, I AM COMPELLED TO EXPLAIN MY AGENDA BEHIND THIS PROJECT AND I FEEL RESPONSIBLE TO MAKE THINGS EXPLICIT. IN THE FIRST PART OF THIS PROJECT, I HAVE PRESENTED THE THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS TO THIS ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIMENTATION. THE APPROACH THAT I HAVE ADOPTED DEPENDS HEAVILY ON NARRATIVES AND VISUALIZATION OF THE VARIOUS ISSUES WHICH I ATTEMPT TO TACKLE IN LIGHT OF ESTABLISHING A NEW CBD WITH AN EXISTING URBAN FABRIC. INSTEAD OF CONCEDING TO THE IMMUTABLE CONVENTIONS, IT IS AN ON-GOING QUESTIONING OF THE WAY WE BUILD AND THE WAY WE CO-EXIST WITH THE ABJECT. BORROWING DELEUZE’S TERM OF THE “BECOMING”, IT ALLOWS A REEXAMINATION OF THE PROCESS THROUGH WHICH PEOPLE SHIFT BETWEEN DIFFERENT MOMENTS, THEIR WAY OF LIFE; ALL WHILE AMBITIOUSLY TRYING TO RESPOND TO HISTORICAL, SOCIO-POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC REALITIES AND GUIDE US TO MOVE TOWARDS NEW WAYS OF ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTION. THE RESULTING SET OF COLLAGE, JUNGLE POWER, BECAME A TRIGGER TO FURTHER EXPLORE THE VARIOUS FACETS OF THE NEW ENVIRONMENT AND BUILDING TECHNIQUE – THROUGH THE VARIOUS MODES OF “BECOMING” AND REFLECTING UPON THE REALITY. NEITHER ONE OF THE GROUNDS LED TO THE OTHER, NOR THE MODES OF “BECOMING” WERE THOUGHT TOGETHER AS A SINGULAR ENTITY. THE PROCESS WAS ALSO NEITHER LINEAR, COHERENT NOR SYSTEMATIC. HOWEVER, IT GAVE THE PROJECT A CERTAIN SHAPE AND POTENTIAL. WITHOUT THIS SET OF COLLAGE, ABJECT DOMESTICATION: REFUSE AND REFUGE MIGHT NEVER EXIST.

APPENDIX

I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT THE DRAWINGS PRESENTED IN THE SECOND PART WERE UNEXPECTED RESULTS FROM THIS EXPLORATION. THEY BECAME A SERIES OF TECHNICAL DRAWINGS WHICH PROPOSED A CERTAIN WAY OF LOOKING AT ATRIUM SPACES AND THE ABJECT. ORIGINALLY DRAWN IN A PSEUDO CONTRACTUAL DRAWING MANNER, THE PROPOSED INFRASTRUCTURE ITSELF IS IN FACT MEANT TO BE BUILT. NOT A LITERAL TRANSLATION FROM JUNGLE POWER, I HAVE CALLED THIS DRAWING SERIES SCRIPTING AFFECT BECAUSE THEY ARE LIKE THE PROGRAMMATIC SCRIPTS EXPERIMENTED BY CEDRIC PRICE IN THE 60S. WITHIN THE DENSE PATTERN GENERATED UPWARDS FROM THE GIRDER, IT CHALLENGES PEOPLE’S PERCEPTIONS, ALLOWS FOR CURRENCY EXCHANGE AND BECOMES A FRAMEWORK FOR OCCUPATION AND PROGRAMMATIC FUNCTIONS. THIS IS DONE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CONTRADICTIONS AND COMPLEXITIES FACED BY THE COMMUNITIES (BOTH PRESENT AND FUTURE) WITHIN THE SITE. AS WE EXPERIMENT WITH THE NEW BUILDING FORMS, THE INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS FROM JUNGLE POWER AND SCRIPTING AFFECT COME TOGETHER TO CORRELATE TO AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF THINKING. IT IS ALMOST LIKE TRYING TO WEAVE A DREAM TOGETHER. ITS PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION HAS GREATLY BENEFITED FROM BOBBY’S AGENDA TO REINFORCE THE CRITICAL NATURE OF ARCHITECTURE, WHICH HAS FURTHER FUELED MY ATTEMPT TO IMPLORE NEW EXPRESSIVE DEVICES IN ORDER TO ENGAGE ARCHITECTURE AS A REACTIVE DISCIPLINE. — LIN DERONG 20TH JUNE 2017
