Achievements and Heroism in our Medical Community

The Sonoma County Medical Association has recognized the unselfish service of physicians who demonstrate sustained, exemplary service annually since 1985. The awards reflect a tribute of respect, recognition and appreciation on the part of SCMA member physicians. On Oct. 9, 2017, a firestorm of unprecedented magnitude devastated much of Sonoma County. SCMA set out to create an inclusive celebration in recognition of all physicians and their service throughout the year and most recently, during the fires. After learning that the location of the Sonoma County Medical Association Alliance Foundation’s holiday event location was destroyed in the fire, we invited SCMAAF to join as a co-host in an effort to bring the medical community together in one grand celebration. Word of the event was shared far and wide, and additional sponsors came forward to help. Safeguarding the quality of medical care requires physicians to do more than maintain excellent ethics and goodwill in the community. It depends on countless hours spent by individuals willing to make personal sacrifices. The commitment of these physicians ensures care for the underserved, helps lobby our legislators to create better medical law, and, as with the recent firestorm in Sonoma County, rises to the challenge during a time of crisis or great need. Awards are also given to physicians for their contributions to the SCMA quarterly magazine, Sonoma Medicine, and to a non-physician who made a significant contribution to the medical community. In 2017, for the first time, we acknowledge a local Practice Manager of the Year—recognizing the vital role practice managers play in the delivery of health care services. This year SCMA also honors the many Medical Heroes of the Firestorm. #SonomaStrong exemplifies the extraordinary spirit of courage and compassion that prevailed as entire neighborhoods, hospitals and care facilities were evacuated. Many physicians and medical staff at all levels continued to work and care for patients as the fires raged, even as some of their own homes were burning. The devastating impact of the fires upon our medical community is substantial and widespread. SCMA acknowledges and honors all medical heroes (sung and unsung) with this celebration. Solo, small groups, major medical groups—we are all in this together.

Heroes in Our Midst Almost two months to the day, Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties experienced what has been reported to be the worst wildfire event in modern California history. In Sonoma County, more than 20 were killed; thousands were evacuated and more than 5,100 homes were destroyed. While the complete aftermath of the firestorm’s devastation is not yet fully cataloged, one factor remains a certainty: Wine Country is blessed with grateful survivors and unexpected heroes. This topic of “Heroes” has been much discussed amongst the medical groups, the SCMA Board and our membership. It is widely agreed that all physicians in Sonoma County are HEROES! Every physician, whether working the night the fires began or not, jumped into action to help evacuate and staff hospitals, work in the emergency rooms, treat fire-related injuries and volunteer at the many evacuation centers—which turned into a 24-hour, 7 day-a-week job for the next two weeks. All the while, families were hoping for the best as the fires burned through the hills of Santa Rosa. It is SCMA’s privilege to recognize all physicians as medical heroes at tonight’s celebration. The Medical Association is honored to represent the interests of such a compassionate, selfless and highly skilled group of physicians. #SonomaStrong indeed!

Sonoma County Medical Association in Action for You! Early in the morning of Oct. 9, while evacuated from her home and sitting in a parking lot waiting to see which direction the fires would turn next, SCMA’s Executive Director, Wendy Young received a phone call from a board member seeking volunteer physicians for evacuation centers. SCMA immediately began calling and fielding phone calls for physician and nurse volunteers from across northern California. SCMA also began checking medical licensure to pre-qualify volunteers before they were sent to evacuation centers. Later in the week, in an effort to get a sense of the community’s most pressing needs, the SCMA team volunteered at the City of Santa Rosa’s Fire Call Center. It was an enlightening experience and great to participate as a team. More than 200 Sonoma County physicians and countless medical staff were made homeless by the firestorm. SCMA staff called and fielded phone calls from physicians who lost their homes, as well as people offering homes for physician families, both temporary and permanent placements. Through SCMA’s efforts, some have found a welcome, new roof over their heads. SCMA contacted utility providers on behalf of those who lost homes, to shut off water, gas, electric and cable services, enabling physicians to focus on more important tasks. SCMA also became a resource for documents and books derived from the Local Assistance Center (LAC) so physicians didn’t have to wait in line at the LAC. All resources were scanned and emailed to physicians and medical staff to download as needed. SCMA will continue with its recovery initiatives to help maintain our critical, local medical infrastructure. If you are looking for a home; replacement documents; fire recovery resources; contract review; architect, builder and engineer referrals; a realtor; bank loan, etc. please contact SCMA for assistance. We will shift our focus to personal care of our physicians as long as there is a need, and beyond. If there is something we can do to help your practice focus on the business of medicine, please ask. You can reach SCMA staff at 707-525-4375. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, Jan. 17, 6–9 p.m. SCMA is hosting “Fire Recovery Resources for Docs,” a workshop/panel of experts at 444 Aviation Blvd. in Santa Rosa. See insert or call SCMA for more details or to RSVP.

WE ARE PHYSICIAN FAMILIES For over 85 years, the Sonoma County Medical Association Alliance has sought to create a healthier Sonoma County by improving the lives of those in need. Never before has that need been inside our own medical community. On October 9, our medical community was scattered across the county, separated from neighbors they’d known and cut off from social connections.

We’d like to do something about that. The Alliance is offering physician families who have been displaced by the fires free membership. Any physician spouse, domestic partner, or any physician, can activate their free membership at www.scmaa.org. Click on “Membership” to register. You will be included in all events and social occasions, and will be immersed in a supportive environment to recover and reconnect.
