From the Director
Dear Friends,
Dr. Jeri Ricketts
Director, Lindner Honors-PLUS and Associate Professor of Accounting
Another academic year has flown by, our 18th since we recruited our first class into the Lindner Honors-PLUS program. As we approach the two decade mark, one can clearly see the transformative impact that the Lindner Honors-PLUS program has had on our college and the university We are all aware of the impact that our students have on campus. Every year we have students who win Presidential Leadership Medal of Excellence (PLME) Awards, are represented as finalists on Homecoming Court, are finalists for Mr. Bearcat or C-Ring, who lead Homecoming, Relay for Life, Cincinnati Dance Marathon…. the list is endless and impressive, especially when compared to the relatively small number of students in our program. But looking back over the last decade, one can also clearly see the cumulative impact that LHP has had on the college, and like a snowball rolling downhill, the impact is exponential. It took a few years for LHP to become well known to high achieving high school students and to Cincinnati’s business community. LHP’s reputation of excellence soon helped to raise all boats in the college, and to create a halo effect that sent the message: “You can get a first-class business education at UC”. Soon we were attracting more top students than we could accommodate, and Kolodzik Business Scholars was born to extend the honors opportunities to more high achieving students. A year ago we extended the honors opportunities a step further, and created the Circle of Excellence. All three programs are now part of “Lindner Honors”, constituting about 20% of our undergraduate population. As the number of students enrolling as freshmen at LCB increased (up almost 50%

Carl H. Lindner College of Business Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS
in 5 years), the average academic metrics increased as well. For instance, five years ago the entering freshman class had an average ACT of 23.5; this year it’s a 26.1. So the college has added students, but added them at the top. Many elements of LHP which were so successful for our students have now been rolled out and scaled up for all of the LCB students with the PACE program (Professionalism, Academics, Character, Engagement). LHP’s academic metrics have increased as well: the average GPA of this year’s entering freshman class is a 3.9 (unweighted), with a 32 average ACT. But we still screen on academics and select based on leadership, work ethic, character, communication skills – all the qualities that we know employers value. If we were trying to maximize our academic metrics, they would be even higher, but we are confident that our proven method of selecting future business leaders is working. Our freshmen are turning down acceptances from Notre Dame, Princeton, Georgetown, Michigan and other schools to enter LHP, knowing that they will get an excellent education and personalized attention. Upon graduation they are securing great jobs, sometimes working with companies that wouldn’t take a second look at a UC student 20 years ago. Alumni have completed MBA’s at Harvard, Chicago, Cornell, MIT, NYU, Michigan, Virginia…. just to name a few. Our alumni network has become extremely powerful, and under the leadership of Kyle Neumann, our LHP Advisory Board has as its priority goal to enhance our alumni networks even further, for the benefit of our alumni and our current students. Consider this. In the 2014-15 academic year, the following LHP alumni helped us set up company visits for our domestic or international trips: Ben Zimmerman
Class of 2004 Reunion at Great American Ballpark
‘07 (Bloomberg in NYC and London); Christina Beer ’14 (JP Morgan in NYC); Amy Steinmetz ’03 (LPK in London and Geneva); Justin Shafer ’05 (EY in London); Matt Mezinskis ’06 (Riga one week program). Many other UC and LCB alumni also hosted us or helped set up company visits: Dick Thornburgh (Credit Suisse in London, dinner at Manhattan Racquet Club); Paul Polman (Unilever in London); Tom Buday (Nestle in Vevay, Switzerland); John Mang (P&G in Geneva); Todd Immell (Bosch and Brembo in Milan); Jerry Leamon (Deloitte in NYC); Bob Buck (dinner in DC); Joe Judge (Jones, Lang, LaSalle in DC). Our current students were also hosted this year by President Ono, at an event at his office, and by Carl and Craig Lindner, at an event at American Financial’s beautiful new building downtown. Having the ability to call upon such dedicated individuals to help educate our students is a privilege and a tremendous advantage, and something that money can’t buy. But speaking of money, alumni and parent giving are up, and our most recent grads are setting the highest bar. Our 2015 graduating class has already pledged $56,000 over the next 5 years to support a scholarship for an entering freshman. The “LHP 1% promise” – asking for alumni to pledge 1% of their compensation back to the program – has helped to encourage all of our alumni to give back to the program that provided them with a tuition free, high quality, education. This high quality education is particularly in evidence at graduation. Our students were honored with many awards: Christina Beer –Outstanding Student in Information Systems, Homecoming Queen, Student Body President; Kyle Quinn – Outstanding MS Tax Student; Bhavik Modi – Presidential Leadership
Medal of Excellence; Ben Keefe – Mr. Bearcat, Undergraduate student representative to the UC Board of Trustees; Brandon Reynolds – Mr. Kuamka; Peter Schmidt – Outstanding Economics Student and Outstanding Finance Student. Not surprisingly, our alumni are still winning accolades too: Matt Yung ’07 was named the Norman R. Baker Outstanding LHP Alum, and Paul Bessire ’05 was selected to the Cincinnati Business Courier’s 40 Under 40 List. Finally, our office welcomed Mary Jo Frost as our new executive assistant. Mary Jo is a wonderful addition to our staff, and in fact, now I don’t know how we ever got along without her! On behalf of all of us here at LHP, thank you all for your commitment to LHP. Please continue to help us get better by supporting us with your treasure, your time, and your connections. I promise you we will put them all to good use! Warm Regards,

Overview of the Program The Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS program is a unique and challenging honors program within the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. The program incorporates a demanding business honors curriculum, mandatory participation in an enhanced, five semester co-operative education program, a domestic trip, an intensive international study abroad trip, and extensive business leadership exposure and training. These components, along with an active partnership with the Cincinnati business community, provide an unparalleled undergraduate business education, which prepares students for long-term success in their careers and their lives outside of work. The emphasis of the program is not solely academic, but also stresses work ethic, integrity, good citizenship, leadership skills and communication skills. Although students accepted to the program possess exceptional academic records, their selection is also predicated on demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities, including athletics, student government, school publications, volunteer and service activities, and other evidence of leadership and a desire to give back to their institutions and communities. The program’s goal is development of the PLUS criteria: Promise as a business professional; Leadership in school and community activities; Understanding of the global marketplace

and diverse cultures; and Success through talent, commitment, dedication, and effort. Thanks to the generous contributions of Carl H. Lindner Jr., The Procter & Gamble Company, EY and many other corporate and individual donors, all Lindner Honors-PLUS students receive merit scholarships sufficient to cover all in-state tuition. Our students’ academic preparation is rigorous and comprehensive. Honors seminars in effective oral and written communication, spreadsheet analytics, business etiquette, character-based leadership and business ethics complement team projects with area businesses and a Harvard Case Study strategy capstone. The academic curriculum is continuously updated to reflect the demands of businesses looking to recruit and retain students who understand the challenges of today’s businesses and have learned the most current tools to meet them. Lindner Honors-PLUS graduates are recognized for their academic preparation, their work experiences while still in school, their work ethic, and the exposure they have had to global business. The well-rounded education they receive has resulted in our graduates being placed in prestigious graduate programs, and in finding rewarding careers upon graduation. Their balanced preparation in analytical and soft skills, positions them well to pursue many divergent opportunities after their time at UC.
Advisory Board Update Friends, Alumni & Students of the Lindner Honors-PLUS program, Thank you all again for your continued involvement and investment in and with the Lindner Honors-PLUS program. Our program would not continue to thrive and grow without the continued efforts and support that we receive from all of our alumni and partners. On a personal note, it would impossible for me to be more excited about the opportunity to serve as the Chairman of the LHP Advisory Board. More importantly I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to work with such a great group of Board Members. For two years, the Advisory Board has operated under the “Engagement and Advancement” mission of our service as it relates to the program. This will continue to be the mantra of the Advisory Board with a primary focus on providing every alumni and program partner an opportunity to be a part of a finalized LHP Strategic Plan. Since the Program’s beginning, there may never have been a more important time to be engaged with LHP than right now. As many of you already know, our good friend and fearless leader, Dr. Ricketts has recently retired as a faculty member. We are extremely fortunate that she is continuing her role as the Director of LHP while the office executes a succession plan which will onboard a new director as she gradually steps aside over the next few years. The search for her eventual replacement is on. It will be up to us as alumni and program stake holders to
ensure that we embrace this eventual transition and ensure the continued advancement of Mr. Lindner’s vision. Elizabeth Zirkelbach has done a remarkable job quarterbacking the early phases of the strategic planning process. She’s agreed to continue on as a member of the Advisory Board leadership team as the Vice Chair. Going forward, the Vice Chair will be responsible for LHP strategic planning initiatives. A good business plan is only as good as your ability to a) stick to it and b) re-visit regularly and make changes when necessary. Thank you to everyone who has participated in surveys and discussion with Ashley McFarland and Elizabeth to this point. We look forward to continuing the process and sharing some of our initial findings with you at this year’s homecoming event. We are also actively searching for someone to serve as the Curriculum Chair on the Advisory Board. This was initially a role that Elizabeth held during the conversion to semesters. We believe this is an important role that should be permanent going forward. Please contact Ashley or me if you have an interest. As we look forward to the upcoming 2015 – 2016 academic year I am incredibly excited for the potential of the projects we have initiated. If you have an interest in helping with any of these programs please reach out! Thank you all again and I look forward to working with you! Best Regards, Kyle Neumann, Class of 2004

Domestic Trip
Washington, D.C,
Washington, D.C. & NYC Ty Wahlbrink When one hears that the Lindner Honors-PLUS Class of 2017 went on its “Domestic Trip” to Washington D.C. and New York City, one perhaps immediately imagines a group of young scholars touring the National Mall or adolescents embracing the boundless choices offered by the endless urban canyons of Manhattan. Indeed, our trip included brief journeys through these national icons. However, the company visits were indubitably the highlight of the trip – and I contend they even changed a number of my peers’ career paths! Upon our arrival at our posh hotel on Saturday night, our adventurous class was eager to maximize each minute of our scant free time. Groups toured the lengths of the National Mall while some experienced the essential monuments for the first time. Unbeknownst to Jeri and
our class, our first “test” was decoding the Washington Metro in a mere four minutes before our infrequent night train would leave us in Foggy Bottom for a long wait. Fortunately, this author has previous experience with the Washington System, and could help the group board right as the doors shut. On Sunday, many groups leveraged the Capitol Bikeshare to tour the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, and Georgetown area on two wheels. Enthralled with the convenience and ease, many of us were excited to see Cincinnati’s own Red Bikes being installed as we got home! Monday morning brought the first company visit in Clarendon, VA to the Council of Better Business Bureaus, the national organization overseeing the 112 local outposts and co-regulation consortium. Mary Power, CEO, and Bennie Johnson, CSO, shared how the BBB is working to update its 100-year old brand of advancing marketplace trust into
the 21st century. Lastly, Genie Barton, Director of Online Initiatives, discussed the business impact of the porous US technical infrastructure, as well as how the BBB strives to protect consumers in the online marketplace with programs like AdChoices (which many of us were surprised to learn was spearheaded by the BBB!). In the heart of the Foggy Bottom Business District, our class visited Jones Lang LaSalle to discover the intricacies of the commercial real estate industry. Joe Judge, Lindner College of Business alumnus, shared the cyclical lifecycle and high-stakes profession of a professional salesman. Further, JLL overviewed the commercial real estate markets in various economies – from DC to NYC, from Europe to Asia, and even from San Francisco to Cincinnati! To learn about government’s influence on business outcomes, the class toured CONTINUES ON 12

the Capitol, with a special tour of Speaker Boehner’s office. The class learned about the Speaker’s various deficit decreasing initiatives, as well as his probusiness regulatory approach. Later, the class crossed through the underground tunnels to the Senate Office Building to speak with Senator Rob Portman’s Chief of Staff Rob Lehman. Quite openly and candidly, Rob discussed how the political process works with the other party and how Senator Portman strives to represent Ohio interests on Capitol Hill. The ideal capstone to our idyllic visit in DC, the class was treated to dinner by Bob Buck, Chairman of Beacon Roofing, at Washington’s oldest restaurant, the Old Ebbitt Grill. While the filet mignon and crab cakes were delectable and memorable, the life advice shared by Bob was invaluable – and had many of our class scrambling to Amazon to order some new books. Further, the class was joined by Dean David Szymanski and Steve Rosfeld, Director of Development, who shared some exciting plans for the future of Lindner Honors-PLUS and its home college. The sprawl of Manhattan astounded our class early as we saw the spire of the patriotically 1,776 foot tall One World Trade Center. A Wednesday afternoon arrival left us with a surplus of free time – which our class used to visit Staten Island, 12
pay respects at the 9/11 Memorial, or enjoy a Broadway show such as Newsies, Les Misėrables, Mathilda, or The Phantom of the Opera. On Thursday morning, the class visited Bloomberg, the stunning, modern Mecca for market information. Lindner Honors- PLUS alumnus Ben Zimmerman invited a series of speakers who covered all topics, from Jill Lewandasky on the functionality of the Bloomberg Terminal to Joseph Salvatore on the future of clean energy. For many of us, Bloomberg personified the archetype of the fast-paced, demanding, East Coast business environment. Nevertheless, many of us were endeared by the challenging, engaging, and rewarding work many of them outlined. Lori Beer, friend of the Lindner HonorsPLUS program, hosted our class at J.P. Morgan Chase on Thursday afternoon. In the executive boardroom in which the Bear Sterns collapse unfolded, Lori Beer shared her perspective on the inextricably linked history and future of the finance industry – and the government’s role in promoting a stable financial system. Further, as Director of Payment and Treasury Services, Lori shared the challenges in processing 23% of the world’s money dailat the world’s largest financial institution. In what was perhaps one of the most elegant and charming evening of my and many of my classmates’ lives, Dick Thornburgh invited us to dine with him at the Manhattan Racquet Club. Founded by the Captains of Industry such as Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan, our class was treated to appetizers on the terrace with a sweeping view of Park Avenue. Seated in classical form at a long table, our class had the opportunity to
Carl H. Lindner College of Business Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS
learn about the lives of several of Dick Thornburg’s fellow University of Cincinnati grads and Dean Szymanski once again. High above The Today Show’s Neon Trees concert, the class visited Deloitte in 30 Rock to learn about the various service lines of a Big Four firm and its extensive government lobbying efforts. Hope Hughes and Phillip Willigmann discussed how, contrary to popular belief, the majority of Deloitte’s revenue comes from its budding consulting business. Further, Jim Tragakis, Director of Government Relations, and Patricia Buckley, Director of Economic Analysis, discussed today’s regulatory environment and its impact on the American economy – specially the impact on Deloitte. As an ideal conclusion to the Business Ethics seminar, the class visited the Advertising Self- Regulatory Council on Friday afternoon. Founded during the “advertising wars” of the 1970s, the ASRC was founded by the advertising industry in order to stave off federal regulation of the industry. Ever since, the ASRC was been recognized as the gold standard in industry self-regulation, as it has nearly complete control over all advertising media. During Business Ethics, our class constantly debated where the “sweet spot” of regulation verses no-regulation fell, but the ASRC proposed a compelling alternative: self-regulation. On Saturday, various class members split off to explore as much as Manhattan as humanly possible. While some toured the harbor in a sailboat with breathtaking views of the New York skyline, others fit in one more Broadway show. Others toured Chinatown, or even met up with fellow UC Bearcats living and working in Manhattan. Indeed, the Domestic Trip was not only an enjoyable conclusion to a summer of classes as a cohort, but the visits introduced us to many new industries and even connected some of us to potential internships. Further, the trip bonded our class and accustomed us to company visits. We are certainly ready for Europe 2015 now!
International Trip London
London, England Jack Johnson
Our first stop on the much anticipated LHP international trip was in London, England, visiting well-known international companies and exploring the streets and attractions of one of the world’s largest cities. London was a terrific starting point for the trip, because it gave us a positive first impression of Europe as a whole. The people were friendly, the companies were inspirational, and the sight-seeing was endless. Most importantly, the language was English! Some of the best company visits included Interbrand, LPK, Credit Suisse, Bloomberg, Ernst and Young, and Unilever. From a branding and marketing standpoint, Interbrand, LPK, and Unilever were eye-opening visits, as we learned about the importance of global and regional brand-building in today’s world. At Unilever, we had multiple discussions
The 2015 International Trip to Europe was paid for in part by the EY Fund for Excellence. The students are very appreciative of the support of so many EY employees who have donated to make this trip possible. on creating sustainable solutions while also achieving strong business performance - an accomplishment that the company is very proud to own. At LPK, we examined case studies on how design has enabled brands to succeed or diminish, and even completed individual analyses of new European brands that we chose throughout the trip. For the more number-oriented and finance-savvy students, the company visits to Credit Suisse, Bloomberg, and Ernst and Young sparked their attention. We met the Chief Financial Officer of Credit Suisse, David Mathers, and held an interactive session asking him questions about the financial markets and differences between Europe vs. the USA. At Bloomberg and EY,
we met executive leaders that also harped on the importance of understanding a globally-connected world and focusing on things outside of business results, such as diversity and inclusion in the workplace. All in all, the visit to London was very rewarding. Perhaps the most fun parts of the visit included visits to Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye, Big Ben, or the Tower of London. Although none of us were able to actually meet Prince William or Kate Middleton, we found a huge community of people that were proud of their royal culture and eager to teach us about England as a whole. International Trip Brussels, Belgium
Brussels
Sam Lewis
The beautiful Belgium capital Brussels offered us an opportunity to explore a beautiful, cultured, and vibrant city. Each day we would stroll through the iconic Grand Place and take in the splendor of one of Europe’s most impressive squares. From there, nearly every major sight in the city could be reached by foot. Our walking shoes received their fair amount of wear and tear over this trip, with Brussels being no exception. We hiked from Chocolatier to Waffle Shop to landmarks brought to life by the rich architectural style of the Art Nouveou era. We took in the Mannekin Pis as well (the peeing boy statue) that is said to be the most overrated sight in all of Europe (and the Internet did not lie). A few group members even ventured by train to Bruge, and others took this time to relax, take an evening stroll, and experience the vivacious night life. Seeing the sights was enjoyable, but this stop was about more than just leisure. We traveled here to explore the European Union as well as the European Commission. The political and economic systems of nations oceans apart can be so different, and we were all excited to better understand the EU and its inner workings. What we learned continually amazed us. I will not judge how well the EU works a) because I am not fond of talking about government or politics and don’t try to act like I even understand their proceedings and b) because it must be very difficult to develop policies to benefit 28 different countries with different cultures. However, I will say that their inability to create and deliver new policies, as well as their inability to help the unemployment rates of the problem states (Greece and Spain amongst others) is a concern. It is easy to condemn the system, but due to the diverse nations, the probability of this system succeeding is low. Throughout the EU there are 24 official languages. Though each country and language is represented in the governing body, and the presidency rotates as it should, it is difficult to reach the entirety of the population. The goals of Latvia differ dramatically from the 14
goals of the UK and the Netherlands. It was apparent through our visits to the EU and European Commission that the weaknesses outweighed the strengths of the European Union system. Additionally, we were able to compare and contrast their system with our own, and even dive deeper into how foreign policy works with our Brussels visit. The visit that we enjoyed the most from our stay, and one that I think all of us will remember for years to come, was the Parliament game on our final Sunday. We had the opportunity to take on arguments within parties, which was a rewarding experience that allowed us to develop party platforms, create alliances amongst groups, and stand up in front of an audience to deliver final verdicts on our issues. My issue was about implanting chips into people so that we can know where they are in case of emergencies, as well as monitor their health at different times. I am a proponent of personal privacy; however, the interesting part of this game was that we had to put our own political and social beliefs aside in order to properly play. Tommy and I collaborated to form an alliance with the strongest party (besides our own, of course) and come to an agreement on whether or not we wanted the chips, what they could be used for, and the primary benefits of

such a decision. Even after a zealous presentation, we couldn’t get every party on board with our policies. But that is politics. When there is a four party system, unlike our two party one, more parties ride the moderate line and can be swayed to make decisions. The United States is partisan and unwavering in its policies, which is the primary reason we have hit economic snags and cannot decide on social and foreign affair issues. The EU, with all of its faults, does have room for compromise. This game allowed us to test the boundaries of the system, and forced us to walk party lines and make necessary concessions in order to get meaningful reform passed. Overall, visiting Brussels was beneficial to our group’s development. London put us on a business high, but seeing the way European government works gave us a framework of challenges international businesses may face. Regulation differs everywhere, and in a global marketplace, companies must adapt to these regulations and still excel. Brussels was a remarkable stop and an even more remarkable city, allowing us plenty of tourist time and education all in our brief four day stay.

Seventy years later, the gravity of World War II was still very present throughout the city, country, and people of Germany. On our walking tour of Munich’s old town, our tour guide reiterated that the majority of the city was rebuilt in the past several decades after being heavily damaged by bombing raids during World War II. Moreover, though many of us explored the Holocaust Museum Munich in Washington, D.C. on our domestic trip this past August, we could not fully embracing the Bavarian charm grasp the gravity of the Nazi atrocities of the region, our week-long stay in until our tour of the Dachau concentration Munich included lectures at a university, camp, a half-hour train ride from Munich’s tour of the city, trip to the Deutsches city center. The somber mood of the German’s twentieth century past was never far removed from our travel experience, but neither was the rich heritage of German beer. As the brewing and consumption of beer is integral to the culture of the Bavarian region, it too was appropriately integral to our experience in the city. During our Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Franziskaner Brewery tour, we learned about the extensive beer manufacturing process and regulations of the German Beer Purity Law, mandating that all beer brewed in Germany must be produced using only water, barley and hops, which gives German beer its distinct taste. Later in the week, our program took us to the Weihenstephen Brewery, the oldest operating brewery in the world, founded in 1040. To continue our market analysis of Germany’s favorite beverage, we traveled each night as a herd of twentythree American college students with an inherent fondness for the foamy brew to different beer halls around Munich, including the famous Hofbräuhaus, Augustiner-Keller, and Löwenbräu Brewery. Our experience in Germany culminated with a visit to the Audi Global Headquarters and production facility in Ingolstadt. Upon our arrival, we wandered through the piazza at the center of the plant and wowed at the newest, sportiest, and shiniest models that, quite literally, just pulled off the assembly line. On our tour of the colossal automobile factory, we walked through a labyrinth of squeaky clean pathways with fascination. Doors, fenders, trunks, and floor boards traveled via assembly lines on each side of us and for several levels above us flying on conveyor tracks suspended in the air. As a result of our Operations Management course completed prior to departing for our international trip, we were compelled to analyze the mind-boggling efficiencies of the Audi manufacturing process – how the company maximizes the machine CONTINUES ON 16

Peering down football fieldsized portions of the production lines, we were entranced by the multitude of robots that collapsed over each vehicle body and intricately attached a new piece to the soon-to-be luxury automobile. After several hours, and help from over a hundred workers and a thousand robots, each finished car blinked its headlights and rolled off the line, ready to be shipped to dealerships and driven around the world. After seven days of exploring the vibrant culture of the Bavarian region, we hopped back on the bus and headed for a nation abundant in pizza, wine and gelato. Nevertheless, we are all looking forward to reliving our Munich adventures (Cincinnati-style) at Hofbrauhaus in Newport and during Oktoberfest on Fountain Square this fall!

After 3 weeks of travelling Europe, our class had acclimated to some basic tenets of European culture. We considered ourselves experts at navigating public 16
transportation systems, no longer expected ice with our beverages and had become accustomed to hearing multiple different languages wherever we went. However, one of the most exciting aspects of travelling Europe is that no two places were exactly the same. What we learned in Northern Italy gave us another outstanding perspective on European culture, and also gave us the opportunity to meet with some truly fascinating companies. Our time in Italy began with a scintillatingly beautiful drive from Munich through the Swiss Alps and ending in Mestre, a city just outside of Venice. Our class spent the weekend exploring Venice’s many hidden canals and ristorantes as well as grand piazzas and cathedrals. Some students even managed to join in with the St. Peter’s Basilica procession for Palm Sunday! The following day we began a series of fascinating visits. Our first stop was Luxottica, the world’s largest eyewear frame manufacturer and leader in luxury and fashion eyewear brands. We first stopped in the logistics hub at Sedico. Here we learned about the processes for distribution and shipment to
Carl H. Lindner College of Business Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS
integration and manufacturing processes of sunglass frames. That night, Luxottica continued to spoil us with a traditional Italian dinner in Milan. Over the next several days we made Milan, the bustling capital city of Northern Italy, our home as we had a superstar lineup of company visits: Bosche, Rotti, and Brembo, curtesy of EY Fund for Excellence. We also had the chance to visit Assocarta, an agency that represents Italian paper manufacturers. At each of these visits we learned about the different industries that the companies operate in as well as some of the challenges that a company in the staggering Italian economy faces. For example, Brembo, a world-leader in high performance brakes is faced with the declining popularity of Motorsport, one of their main revenue drivers. At Bosche we learned about cross-selling and how technology is going to build smarter cities in the future. Rotti is a luxury silk
supplier that allowed us on a tour of their production facilities. It was amazing to see the massive shuttle machines that wove the fabrics into intricate designs with great force and speed. Italy had a different feeling than England or Germany. Paradoxically things seemed more relaxed and yet more chaotic at the same time. Everywhere we went, the natives had deep concerns about the future of the country, as there are still many questions to be answered concerning immigration, the EU, and the Euro. Italy also has a major problem with a highly bureaucratic system and division between the north and south. One thing is for certain, Italy was one of the most beautiful stops on the trip. Many of us made a day trip up to Lake Como and enjoyed a half day of sun, mountains and beauty on the lake that George Clooney calls home. Leaving Italy and La Dolce Vita behind was heartbreaking for some and exciting for others who needed order back into their schedules.
Riga, Latvia Matthew Murphy
When most people think of Europe, a couple cities and locations immediately come to mind: the hustle and bustle of London, the beer gardens of Munich, the art of Paris, or the history of Rome. However, one place that people probably wouldn’t think of off the top of their heads is Riga, Latvia. But fortunately for us, that meant we got to enjoy the charm of Eastern Europe without having to deal with the crowds and tourist traps that plague many of Europe’s famous cities. Nestled in the northeastern edge of the European Union along the Baltic Sea, Riga sits at a crossroads between western democracy and capitalism and the totalitarianism and communism of Russia. Today, Latvia continues to move away from its Soviet past, but while walking and living in the city, one cannot help but notice the Russian influence on the people and culture. From an outsider’s perspective, tensions seemed especially high due to the Russian aggression in the Crimea and Ukraine; however, for many
Latvians, Russia has been and always will be a source of fear and suspicion. In cities such as London, Munich, and Geneva, our company visits were focused almost exclusively Munich on large, multinational corporations and their impact on the European and global economy. However, the visits in Riga provided a new perspective as we were able to catch a glimpse of what European business and life is like outside the major cities and economic centers. Personally, I found it fascinating to see how local businesses and entrepreneurs are capable of carving out a local market in which to thrive. For instance, Matt Mezinskis, our host and Lindner Honors-PLUS alumnus, took us to visit a local bakery and restaurant about an hour outside of Latvia. To an outsider, this business, that appeared to be located in the middle of nowhere, didn’t look like much, yet it had distinguished itself so much in the local market that it was generating millions in revenue and high profit margins. I believe most of us, especially myself, found it refreshing to see a side of European business that differed from the large, global corporations. The next major learning point for our class came from our conversations with Matt, the locals, and a United States Lieutenant Colonel regarding the Russian influence in Eastern Europe. Before this trip, most of us saw the crisis in Ukraine as little more than a news story; however, our time in Riga put faces and names to the stories we see on the news. The Colonel’s insight as well as Matt’s enabled
us to understand what it’s like to live and do business in an area that faces some of the greatest uncertainty in the world: Russia. On the flipside of that uncertainty,
it was encouraging to learn that the United States was upholding its alliance with Latvia by sending troops as support. Though Riga may not be the first choice of a traveler abroad in Europe, it proved to be one of the most informative stops during our trip. Whether it was learning about the Russian sphere of influence in Eastern Europe or how Baltic companies compete to survive, I believe I can speak for our entire class when I say that Riga was one of the most intriguing and interesting destinations we visited. We would all like to thank Matt Mezinskis for going above and beyond as our host for this leg of the trip. Thanks Matt!

International Trip The western part of Switzerland, where Geneva is located, speaks primarily French, even though most of the country speaks German. The lake that the city sits upon, Lake Geneva, is absolutely gorgeous with crystal-clear water and snow-capped mountains in the background. The air is so fresh that it feels cold when you take a breath. Early Friday we visited the World Trade Organization, which monitors and regulates international trade between countries. We were treated to a full introduction on how the WTO is maintained, keeps members in check, and adds new members. After the visit, a lot of people elected to leave Geneva to go to Interlaken, a resort town 2-3 hours away from Geneva. Although I didn’t go, the people who did enjoyed a weekend
of kayaking, hang gliding, and hiking along the scenic mountain town. Other people opted to take a cable car up a nearby mountain to go hiking, and others took a day trip to a golf course in nearby Annecey, France, about 30 minutes away by car. On Monday we took a trip to Vevey, Switzerland, to visit Nestle. There we learned about their brand management style and efforts they are taking to help conserve the world’s resources, especially water. Afterwards, we traveled to Vernier to visit Givaudan, the world leader in manufacturing flavors and fragrances. We visited their main Cincinnati operation and witnessed a company presentation of combining several fragrances to make a distinct smell; in this case, root beer. We actively worked on a case study to

determine why someone would invest $1 billion in the company and the benefits for that investor. Our last day of the program, Tuesday, was a half-day spent at P&G. We heard from seasoned executives as well as relatively new brand managers. We learned how loyalty with a company is a two-way street and that you should always say yes to new opportunities, even if you don’t feel like you have mastered your current position. After the company visit, we said a sad goodbye to Jeri and Susan as they headed to France on their last stop before home, and we headed out to our respective 10-day adventures. I think I speak for all of us when I say that Geneva was one of the most beautiful cities with some of the best company visits and adventures we had on the entire trip.
Alumni Spotlight Benjamin P. Hines Class of 2006 Distinctive friendships, trustworthy role models, built in access to high caliber professional networks and businesses. These benefits are byproducts which supplement the core academic curriculum of the Lindner Honors-PLUS (LHP) program, and are all but a guarantee for LHP alumni. So much in fact, their descriptive use when characterizing and capturing aspects of the LHP program may seem hackneyed. My experience, however, has only further validated these benefits, and I remain deeply grateful for the staff, instructors, co-op hosts, donors and peers who brought and bring the LHP essence to reality. I was one of two transfer students enrolled into LHP after already completing an academic year. The reputation of the program was well established at this point, and the distinguished intellect, character, and leadership of on-campus LHP students was exemplary and compelling. I recall running late night droning revolutions around a dimly lit track on campus during my application and interview process as I prayed, pleaded for this opportunity. Acceptance into the program was truly life changing for me. Those familiar with the LHP tenets and experiential components are well aware of their value, but alumni have the unique view of observing where the education born by concentrated shepherding of the program administrators intersect business and social life over time. In this review, I am even more thankful for and aware of the LHP program’s value. My successive co-op segments with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, originating in New York City, eventually led me around the world and culminated in a full time job working in Washington D.C. within Deloitte’s Global Public Sector industry as a Knowledge Management practitioner. Consider only briefly the wealth of experiences a young co-op student might have while jaunting from country to country, tackling pre-positioned, small-scale tasks for foreign projects, all while being paid! Worthy of note, UC alum Mr. Jerry Leamon facilitated the professional interaction of LHP and Deloitte Global which resulted in the placement of several LHP co-op students.

Concurrent with my LHP study and various campus positions and activities, I was on a less visible journey of seeking out deeper meaning of life, my role, and where I felt God my Creator was leading me. This exploration resulted in an irrefutable sense that service was foundational to whatever I would do professionally. Understanding this about me, the considerate and obliging managers for which I worked at Deloitte as a co-op steered me into the industry which served government clients, foreign and domestic, and where I felt quality of life issues were more concentrated. This exposure and experience was brilliant. I cherish the work and the associations from my days at Deloitte, and have since confidently steered several friends into employment at this great company. Many quality businesses serve government clients and I am thankful for the private sector experience I had in this arena, but I was not yet at peace and knew my call to service was more specific for that time. Fortunate for me, decision makers and strategists in the United States Government aimed to diversify the workforce of the Department of State and were hiring more officers with private sector experience. I joined State as a Foreign Service Officer, and as a U.S Diplomat I have learned the Turkish language, lived in three different countries, and worked directly on some of our nation’s highest priority foreign policy initiatives. Economic Diplomacy has been an increasing focus of our government, and in my experience, the value of our diplomatic engagement is enriched when officers maintain a sound understanding of business and economic precepts. I’ve realized the LHP advantage regularly in this realm.
The maturation I underwent at UC was extraordinary, and I regularly highlight LHP as a centerpiece and cite its defining role in my personal and professional development. I’m honored to eulogize LHP during my interactions, and count myself among the fortunate beneficiaries of a thoughtful, dedicated administration of LHP over the years.
Katherine McClanahan Class of 2015 During my first year of college, I did not believe it when everyone said these five years would fly by; yet here I am five years later wondering where the time went. These years were filled with challenging classroom experiences, campus involvement, co-op rotations, and countless memories with the 26 others in my LHP class of 2015. I graduated in May with a job offer from EY, and all the confidence and credentials I needed to begin my venture into the ‘real world’, thanks to the Carl H. Lindner HonorsPLUS program. I am so grateful that LHP encourages all students to get involved. I was able to develop as a leader through campus organizations in a way I may not have otherwise. Throughout my years at UC, I was involved in Bearcat Buddies, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Sigma Pi, ROAR Tour Guides and Lindner Women in Business. I also took on leadership roles as I advanced through my college career. I became the Membership Chairman of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and led my sorority through recruitment. In this position I motivated and led over 100 women through the recruitment process, learning the importance of organization and

delegation. Then, as a fifth year I was elected CEO of Lindner Women in Business (an organization started by three LHP women in 2013), which taught me invaluable lessons of team management and the responsibilities of leadership. While in these organizations, I consistently sought out exceptional role models for guidance - almost all of whom were older students in LHP. They were always willing to help, and provide advice regarding situations inside and outside the classroom. This guidance, along with the curriculum that LHP has built, is without a doubt why so many graduates are successful. We are challenged in the classroom and given the chance to travel abroad. I believe the travel abroad dynamic of the program is crucial to LHP students’ success. I know it gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and explore new things. My class traveled to Europe in 2013 and in May of 2014, a few of us also studied abroad in Japan. I am so appreciative of these opportunities and know it has positively affected my learning development. The professional work experience is another vital facet of the LHP program. I completed all of my co-op rotations at EY. This allowed me to rotate through multiple service lines within the firm, enabling me to diversify my experiences and make an informed choice on my career path. During my last rotation, I was presented with the opportunity to apply for a one

and gaining priceless knowledge and experiences. As a new alumna, I welcome any opportunity to pass on the knowledge I have gained with younger students. LHP has helped shape the professional I am today, and I will always be grateful for the experiences I had.
Kim Jackson Class of 2002 Despite life’s constant reminders that I’m getting older, it still seems crazy to say this: I graduated LHP (class of 2002) over 13 years ago! It seems both like yesterday and a lifetime ago. In the past few months, I’ve been reflecting back on my time at LHP quite frequently. Having the fortune of being included in the inaugural class set me up for life in ways that I didn’t even fully comprehend at the time. I had the inside track to an amazing list of internships and co-ops. I was able to study abroad for the first time in my life, and saw international business operations up close and personal.

Along with my classmates, I was exposed to the most brilliant professors in the college and often had smaller class experiences that enhanced my education. And to this day, I’m close with fellow LHP friends, and thankful for the friendships we forged. After graduating, I started my career in market research. I spent a couple of years at F+W Publications, managing and executing all of their primary research efforts. I then moved on to a more traditional client service role, working at Intelliseek. (Which then merged with BzzMetrics before it was acquired by Nielsen. I learned a lot about M&A!) In that role, I scoured the internet for mentions of my Kim Jackson clients’ products and associated customer experience. This was back when “blog” was an exciting buzzword and message boards were the cutting edge of social media. After two years at Nielsen BzzMetrics, I decided it was time to further my education. Don’t hold it against me; I wound up attending the fulltime MBA program at Ohio State. Rest assured, my loyalty still remains 100% with the Bearcats. When I graduated from the program in 2008, I began working at dunnhumby. I had been intrigued by this company for years and jumped at the chance to join their ranks. I’ve been working there ever since, in a variety of roles in client leadership or on the more technical solutions development side. Some of you may have read recently in the news that a good portion of dunnhumby was purchased by Kroger; I now sit within this new company of 84.51°. Needless to say, it’s been an exciting and fascinating time to be here. With Kroger at the helm, we’re now freed up to create even more useful insights from their customer data and there’s a push for us to be the innovation engine for Kroger now and into the future. Beyond work, I’ve had a really fulfilling personal life. In 2006, I met my future husband, Josh, and his bright and engaging daughter Noelle. We married in 2009 and I felt so blessed to have not only a wonderful husband but an amazing step-daughter. In 2011, our son Evan was born. He arrived prematurely and had a tough few months, but has been doing fabulous ever since.
The unexpected nature of his arrival and those first terrifying days taught me so much about the delicacy of life and what’s really important in this world. In 2014, we welcomed Madeline, the latest addition to the Weber family. She’s turning out to be quite a spunky and energetic little girl. The most exciting thing to happen in recent months, however, has been watching Noelle go through the college application and acceptance process. She stated fairly early on that she was interested in Lindner Honors PLUS. When she toured campus and met a couple current LHP students, she instantly felt at home. We eagerly awaited news of the interviews being scheduled, and then later day by day for the eventual acceptance. She was so happy when she heard she was going to be a Bearcat and an LHP student, and we were thrilled for her as well. I can say from firsthand knowledge that this year’s incoming freshman class is going to be quite impressive. Actually, reading about current students over the last decade, and all of their accomplishments, underscores how terribly impressive every LHP class has been. The caliber of the program gets stronger every year. I am beyond excited for Noelle and all of her classmates as they begin this school year. What an exciting time for them and for the overall Lindner Honors-PLUS program. I believe that everything in life happens for a reason. There was a reason a guidance counselor encouraged me to apply for an unknown honors program at UC (despite me saying I wanted to go to school outside of Cincinnati no matter what). There was a reason I fell in love with a Xavier University graduate and put up with his flawed enthusiasm during every crosstown shootout. There’s a reason our family is now rounding out the cycle with what will be two LHP graduates. (And two Bearcats. Sorry I’m not sorry, Josh.) Life can take so many turns at any point along the way. Starting my adult path in the Carl H. Lindner HonorsPLUS program set me on the course that has allowed me to arrive where I am today. I am so thankful for everything I’ve experienced in life so far, and can’t wait to see what’s around the corner next. And I look forward to reading all my future alumni newsletters and other communications with double the excitement!

Ryan Atkins Class of 2012 The weather was getting colder and excitement was building on campus. It was the fall of 2009 and the football team was undefeated and ranked in the top five in the country. I had just started my third year in the Lindner Honors-PLUS program and was on top of the world. I was vice president of Pike under my big brother Mark Wood, I had just coordinated the homecoming parade, and I had just signed on for my next rotation at Ernst & Young for another apprenticeship under Justin Shafer. I anxiously awaited more on-the-job experience with the added bonus of working with fraternity brothers Doug Cushman and Kyle Quinn. If there was time, I would squeeze in late-night study sessions with Monique Bernstein (back when she would’ve laughed at the idea that she would one day leave Proctor & Gamble to sell snacks out of a box at Universal Yums.) Each day when I returned home to Pike headquarters, I could count on the mentorship of fifth-year guys Alex Hotte and Brad Stephens. To top it off, I was busy planning a Greek Isles cruise for the following spring on the international trip with Josh Kramer, Jack Habig, and Robel Kidane. I was 21-years-old and having a blast with great friends as we mapped out our futures of success together. What could possibly have been better? Then November 20, 2009 happened. As I continued to become more aware of my surroundings in the Intensive Care Unit after flipping my car on the side of the highway, I was confused. People would
change the subject when I asked about how many days I had until Mike Magazine’s Quantitative Analysis exam or when I inquired about turning in my international trip or co-op forms before Thanksgiving break. After a four-month stay in the hospital that included working my way off of a ventilator and feeding tube, I was back home in Cincinnati, but this time rather than 26 fraternity brothers, I was sharing the hallway with my parents. I quickly attempted my comeback to campus. I hitched rides from faithful classmates who made the 30 minute trek north to pick me up so I could participate in group events such as the Student Alumni Council or Men of Metro. I met with Jeri Ricketts to nail down a plan of action to get back on track with my classmates. That first summer home in 2010 I decided to start slowly, taking Accounting Ethics with Jeri and learning the ways of Bernie Madoff, while vigorously attacking physical therapy each day. My sights were set on returning to campus physically fit in the fall, right back on track with my classmates in the class of 2012. It did not turn out quite like I had envisioned. Not only did I overestimate my own abilities to physically overcome a disconnect between my brain and muscular system, but I was worn out, hopped up on medication, and not physically or emotionally ready to assume my spot back in the classroom. I had hit a brick wall. My identity had been in my college persona. Where could I turn now? Sure enough, deciding to wait on class

Alumni Spotlight turned out to be the best possible decision, as I learned that each step in the road is vital to the entirety of the story. Taking a break allowed for some great opportunities that I may not have gotten to experience otherwise. I began blogging at FlatOnMyBack.com, which quickly turned into a platform to share my story and interact with others dealing with various trials. Speaking opportunities arose, ranging from elementary school students to church congregations. With more time available to read, write, contemplate life, speak, start my website, etc., these last few years have turned out to be the most important season of my life to date. I found out who I am. In many ways I’ve better understood what my role is. And most importantly, I’ve discovered who God is. One of the most rewarding opportunities since my time on campus has been getting to mentor a group of high school guys. We met weekly throughout their high school career, culminating in their graduation this past spring. This same group of guys also played a central role in helping me propose to my fiancée Stephanie this summer through an intricate scavenger hunt around the area. Stephanie and I met in second grade and reconnected after the accident thanks to her profession in massage therapy playing a key role in my rehabilitation. Last year some time freed up, so I started the process of looking into finishing the business degree I started in 2007. Class kicked off and I re-acclimated myself by knocking out a few real estate courses, gaining a new appreciation for the study of business, which I find I value much more at 26-years-old than I did at 21. I can now look forward to graduating at Christmas, nearly nine years after moving into Turner Hall. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Lindner Honors-tkinPLUS program. While I thoroughly enjoyed the challenging environment and professional training, the family atmosphere I have had the opportunity to be a part of along with the support I have received over the past six years is what sticks out more than anything. I may not have taken the most conventional path towards graduation, but thanks to the program putting the students first, I was able to get back on track with graduation in sight. Finishing a college degree in nine years may not have been part of my initial plan, but

you better believe I’m going to eventually have that degree from the University of Cincinnati! To stay up-to-date with Ryan’s journey, check out FlatOnMyBack.com
Mike Jarvis Class of 2013 There have been so many fantastic people who have gone through the Lindner Honors-PLUS program that when I was asked to be spotlighted as an alumni for the annual report, I truly felt honored. LHP had a tremendous impact on my life and helped shape me into the person I am today. The rigorous course requirements and other academic endeavors are the (obvious) things that first come to mind when I reflect on how well the program prepared me for life after college. The skills acquired and lessons learned through the program’s distinctive, blended focus on academics, campus involvement, leadership, and professional etiquette have been invaluable. Among other things, without this unique, holistic approach to educating and preparing future business leaders, I’d still be wearing black dress shoes with navy blue suit pants (Thanks LisaMarie!). But I think what really makes LHP stand above other honors programs is that the sum of its parts are much greater than the individual parts on their own. Other programs certainly try to incorporate the aspects mentioned above, but the way LHP is managed and run allows it to function as a family as much as an honors program. It was clear to me early on that everyone associated with the program wanted not only to help the students succeed on campus, but that they also genuinely cared about all of us personally. This was never more apparent than early in my second year when I was in a serious car accident that left me paralyzed from the chest down. After my accident there were a million thoughts running through my head, and just as many unknowns. One thing I never questioned, though, was the support of the entire

Lindner Honors PLUS program. The continued support of the LHP family was incredible and something I can’t adequately put into words. Because of LHP I was able to return to school after my accident quicker than I initially could have imagined, and graduate with my original LHP class. The most significant effect of this support was how it helped me re-gain confidence in my ability to succeed and accomplish my goals. I was so unsure of myself after my accident, even just going to class was daunting at first. The program’s support never faltered and I soon found myself transitioning from just trying to keep my head above water, to thriving on and off campus. I was able to travel abroad with my class to fulfill the international requirement and land several co-op rotations with GE Aviation. Both things that would have been impossible without LHP. I am currently in my final year of law school at Ohio State (I apologize!), using my background in finance to focus on business/ corporate law. Aside from the relief of being done with law school, I am most eager to graduate so I can once again live and work in the vibrant Cincinnati business community. I am excited to employ the values and lessons I learned during my time in LHP to improve and give back to the community. The opportunities LHP afforded me have allowed me to accomplish my goals, personally and professionally. I will be forever grateful for how Lindner Honors-PLUS helped shape me into who I am today.
Student Spotlights Andre Elkins During my junior year in the Lindner Honors-PLUS program, I completed two amazing internships with top organizations in the sports industry. In the summer of 2014, I worked as an intern with the Cincinnati Reds in the promotional events department. Equally as exciting, during the summer of 2015, I was a traveling operations intern at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). Both positions have proven to be remarkable opportunities to achieve and advance my educational and professional goals. As in intern for the Cincinnati Reds organization during the 2014 season I helped execute all marketing and promotional activities during Reds games and community events. These activities included player appearances, pre-game ceremonies, gameday promotions/ events and community events like Redsfest and Opening Day. During my time as an intern I also had the unique opportunity to help with the preparations for the 2015 All-Star Game. The internship was a great chance to learn more about event management/planning and promotions in the professional sports industry. Following the spring semester of my junior year, I was presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the country as an operations intern with the leading organization in the golf industry, the AJGA. As an intern at the AJGA, I traveled to a different city each week, running golf tournaments featuring the top junior golfers in the world, similar to AJGA alumni Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. I planned and managed event operations for fifteen junior golf tournaments throughout the summer, and I traveled to beautiful locations in Vermont, Oregon, Ontario, Atlanta, Boston, and Washington D.C. These experiences would not have been possible without the LHP program and I am blessed to have the opportunity to be a student of such a prestigious program.
Jack Johnson Given all of the great opportunities that the Lindner Honors-PLUS program and Lindner College of Business have provided me in college, I have dedicated a large amount of my student involvement to organizations and initiatives within the business school. One of the coolest and most fulfilling parts about being involved within Lindner is being able to see the tangible differences that student involvement can make. The college is small enough that any changes made are often easy to implement, measure, and see, but large enough that you can also make a truly significant impact on many students. Through my involvement in the Business Tribunal (now named the Lindner Student Association), I have enjoyed helping to build all of the programs that are now bringing extra value to the business student college experience. This includes hosting distinguished speakers, mentoring first year students, providing business start-
up resources for student entrepreneurs, serving the city through community outreach, hosting the UC Career Fairs, and playing intramural sports for the college, among other activities. The best part about these programs is that the students have full authority on the decisions and directions of each initiative, and this freedom to lead the decision-making and ownership of such significant projects has taught me so much about leadership, responsibility, and managing relationships. Some of the highlights of this year include the switch in coop management from the Division of Professional Practice to the Lindner Career Services team, the elimination of the PD1001 course for incoming business co-op students, the elimination of the co-op fee for business students, an all-time record level of company and student attendance at the Fall Career Fair, the faculty suggested deadlines on posting grades each semester, and re-branding of the Lindner Student Association. All of these achievements were highly motivating to me because we were able to use student decisionmaking, input, and thought leadership to make them a reality. The Lindner College of Business does a great job of empowering and enabling students to take ownership of projects and to make tangible impacts every day. I am eager to stay involved in my next two years at UC, and will always be a proud Bearcat in the Lindner College of Business and member of the Lindner Honors-PLUS family!
Matt Murphy Going into this past year of school, I received a phone call from then 5th year student, Bhavik Modi. He explained to me his role in collecting feedback from LHP students on what they liked about the program, what they didn’t like, and most importantly, what they saw as opportunities to take the program to the next level. As Bhavik was approaching graduation, he sought me out to head the creation and implementation of ideas and programming based on student feedback to improve the student experience and the quality of Lindner Honors-PLUS sent into the workplace. One such suggestion that was reiterated almost unanimously across the student feedback was the need to revamp and restructure the student to student mentorship that takes place during a student’s freshman year. As a result of that feedback, Molly Hinken (‘18) and I worked on developing a more family-style mentorship in which students of different ages, majors, and friend groups would be placed together into a peer-to-peer mentor group that will be lead by upper-class students. The goal of such a program is to provide more structure to the mentorship program, increase interaction between different age groups, and give each student access to resources needed to succeed at the University of Cincinnati. Over the past 6 months, Molly and I have been working on developing the most cohesive sets of families as well as a set of activities that can be used to facilitate interactions within the families. These activities will range from purely social events to more professional events such as a lunch-and-learn with a Lindner Honors-PLUS alumnus. One unexpected outcome of this mentorship initiative has been the revival of the annual Lindner Honors-PLUS picnic that used to

Student Spotlights take place during the summer. Within the next few weeks, Molly and I will be joining close to 100 of other current LHP students to celebrate the return of another fall at the University and the newest class of LHP students. This picnic will serve as the official kickoff of the family mentorship groups, and Molly and I are looking forward to working with this program as it continues to evolve and grow over the course of this upcoming year. Though the mentorship program is one example of the result of student feedback collected by Bhavik Modi, it is definitely not the sole result. Other tangible results that are either completed or in process include improvements to course evaluations and feedback on Lindner Honors-PLUS classes and seminars, opportunities for professional certifications, and opportunities for students to engage with alumni and vice-versa. We’re looking forward to the development of these initiatives and seeing the results of Bhavik’s hard work as well as all others involved!
Meghan Pope Before classes even began freshman year, I was truly overwhelmed by the plethora of involvement opportunities at UC. The Class of 2017 knew that we would be following in the example of those before us; we were so excited to do so. Upperclassmen had been talking to us all summer about Greek life, becoming a tour guide and joining SAC when we met them and got to know them at events. To get into LHP in the first place, we had to be leaders in high school and our proven records would grow as much as our future potential would over the next three years. I have to say, I have been amazed watching my friends serve campus through leadership in our three years at UC. I will always credit Jordan Hamons and Brien Dulle, who spoke to our class after convocation up in 608 – where all good Lindner meetings come alive. Essentially, college involvement was described as a buffet: you can’t fit everything on your plate and generally, the good stuff is at the far end. They said its ok to try different things out before committing because once you’ve taken on responsibility you can’t back out and you don’t want to make yourself miserable spending time on things you don’t love. I would pay this advice forward to anyone in the incoming class as well – you don’t have to join something just because all of your friends are and you can wait before making decisions about commitment. During the first few weeks of school, I felt grateful and thankful in a way I never had before. I couldn’t believe the amazing opportunities we had at UC, in Lindner and in LHP and knew that students didn’t realize how much fun college could be or how well it could prepare one for a career; UC was totally undersold. I became involved in ROAR serving as a tour guide, helped start Lindner Ambassadors my freshman year and became an Honors Ambassador for UHP. What Brien and Jordan shared with my classmates held true and I’m glad I chose organizations I’m very passionate about. At times, I have felt extremely compelled to join more groups for all kinds of reasons but I remind myself to remember why I’m wanting to join. Our time is best spent doing things we love and building

relationships with others who share our passions. UC offers so much, so find your niche wherever it is and don’t hold back letting your passion carry you to success in that area!
Meghan Cappel Growing up, there was only one time every year I stepped foot on the University of Cincinnati’s campus. That yearly visit wasn’t for Homecoming and it wasn’t for Alumni Weekend. It was for the high school football playoffs to see the Elder Panthers take on a Cincinnati rival. While I certainly was a typical proud Westsider, I bled blue, not for St. Xavier, but instead for Xavier University. I was raised a proud Musketeer, and I thought there was no way that was ever going to change. Let’s fast forward to January of 2011. After many hours of long debates with family and friends about the term “business casual”, I walked into my interview for the business honors programs at the University of Cincinnati. The interview was the first time I had spent a considerable amount of time on campus, and I knew that UC was where I was meant to be. When I received the acceptance email to the Lindner Honors-PLUS program, I knew my perspective on college life was about to be transformed. Ask me why I decided to attend the University of Cincinnati, and you will hear the standard answer that any student gives: “UC has all the opportunities of a large campus but with a small campus feel, the co-op program is outstanding, and there are so many ways to study abroad.” If you ask me why I stayed, I can assure you it’s different than the typical student. Many people find their best friends in college, but how many can say they knew their 22 best friends the first day? My class has learned so much about each other: how to push each other’s buttons, how to support our partners to reach the top of the Great Wall of China, and most importantly, we’ve learned how to encourage each other to succeed. Through the positive pressure from my classmates, I was able to step outside my comfort zone to take on the various opportunities that created my UC experience. I was part of Relay For Life when, in 2013, the UC community surpassed the $1 million mark. As a sophomore, I was able to think outside my comfort zone as the student voice on the search committee for UC’s Vice President of Marketing and Digital Communications. Additionally, I was a student interviewer on the search to fill the Title IX Coordinator position. Most recently, I served as the co-op student representative on the Decanal Review Committee for the office of PROPel (coop and academic internships), where I was tasked with making recommendations for the office’s leadership. With the support of my Lindner Honors-PLUS peers over the past four years, I took advantage of every opportunity to make my impact on the University, and to create the best campus for all students. The University of Cincinnati is my home, and the Lindner Honors-PLUS Class of 2016 is the best family I could have asked for throughout my college career.
Melissa Lower My plan upon entering college in 2011 was to graduate from the University of Cincinnati in 2016 with a degree in Industrial Management, and eventually begin a career in operations or engineering management at a great Fortune 500 company like General Electric or Procter and Gamble. I figured that would be a safe and secure path to follow, and those are the companies that people with my background tend to strive to work for. However, as I am about to enter my fifth and final year as a student, I am realizing that my career ambitions have drastically changed since my first year. After freshman year I was placed at G.E. Aviation in Evendale for my first internship, and the next year I completed two co-op rotations with The Kroger Co. in downtown Cincinnati. I learned so much from these experiences, but realized that, while they were both great companies, they were not the perfect fit for me. Reflecting on both of those experiences, I realize now that I was neither passionate about nor very interested in either of the industries I had been working in. I began interviewing for my next co-op in January of 2014, and although I enjoyed visiting and learning about a variety of large companies in the area, I was always somewhat disappointed after walking out of the interview. At the end of February though, I had a stroke of luck. Tim Metzner, a 2005 Lindner Honors-PLUS alumnus, had reached out looking for a candidate to fill a possible co-op position with a company he had started the year prior. I decided that it couldn’t hurt to meet with him, and we ended up grabbing coffee to talk about the opportunity. At the meeting, I learned that his company, Differential, was a technology company that helps build websites and applications for startups and bigger companies that are looking to innovate. Startups and innovation intrigued me, and I have always loved keeping up on technology, so I reached back out to Tim, confirming that I would love to work for Differential if they would have me. Fortunately, Differential did end up hiring me, and I have completed my final three co-op rotations with the company. Every single day I am thankful for the opportunities they have given me. Once I was finally exposed to an internship in the tech industry, I knew that technology was where I wanted to take my career. Since then, I have decided to add a minor in Information Technology to my studies. This way, I will be able to take introductory classes in website and application development to further my knowledge and, hopefully, become pretty fluent in web development so I can better understand the industry I want to work in. The path I am following is not the typical one, or the one that I had planned for, but I think that’s why I like it so much. Don’t be afraid of doing what you love, even if it isn’t what you expected!
