Druid Hill Park - Conceptual Design

Page 1

DRUID HILL PARK - CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DESIGN INTENT To create a space that will provide resources for the surrounding communities and establish a smoother transition into Druid Hill Park by incorporating program elements that increase food security, community engagement, educational programs, and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

B.E.S RESEARCH PRECEDENT The Baltimore Ecosystem Study has worked with Pathways to Environmental Science Literacy Project in order to research more about environmental science teaching.

Some teaching strategies are based on a learning progression-based teaching strategy which focuses on the engagement between teachers and students.

The three stands of focus consist of biodiversity, carbon, and water. From these strands, certain project activities and themes are developed.

The last three strategies emphasize the need for educational programs that will help provide personal interactions with the surrounding environment.

Out of the four neighborhoods, Reservoir Hill illustrates the highest severity for food deserts. This indicates a lack of resources available for local residents. An opportunity for self-sustaining urban farms is evident in this neighborhood.

Although there are a number of community gardens, there is only one community farm in Reservoir Hill: Whitelock Community Farm. Establishing more community farms will help increase food security as well as awareness and create educational opportunities for the public.

Dorothy I. Height Elementary School is primarily for neighborhood children and has an enrollment number of around 340 students. There is an opportunity to provide an environmental educational experience to these children by creating outdoor spaces that support these activities.

The daily traffic is more prominent in the outer regions of Reservoir Hill such as Druid Park Lake Drive and West North Ave. Other heavily used streets are used by the CityLink transportation. The transition into Druid Hill Park can be made safer by slowing down traffic and creating a more pedestrian/cyclist dominate environment.

Each side of the pathways will have flowerbeds with native species that lead to the parks. In addition, a Druid Hill Park sign will be located every 300 - 400 feet.

PHASE 2 -

COMMUNITY PARK With its close proximity, the Baltimore Inner Harbor is a key identity to the city. The community farm planting plots will mimic the layout and shape of the harbor front in order to celebrate the rich history of the city, provide for the community and educate the public about self-sustained food systems.

The program elements will address the existing issues present in the previous GIS analysis. Each of these elements will help alleviate existing issues or establish a stronger source of community engagement for the community. This park will establish a stronger connection into Druid Hill Park by drawing in visitors with a variety of activities and community events. In addition, parking alongside the roads will help lower vehicle speed and create a safer crossing experience for visitors.

PHASE 3 -

DRUID LAKE TRANSITION

The transition into Druid Hill Park will create a more activated experience by allowing users to enter using terraced steps (as well as ADA accessible route) that will transcend down to Druid Lake. An overlook will help strengthen the experience and interaction of users with the lake.
