MEET THE NEW DIRECTOR! Hi there! I’d like to take a moment of your time to introduce myself. As a Castlebar native, the Linenhall Arts Centre brings back many fond memories from over the years and I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be appointed to this post. I believe the Linenhall has long been the backbone of arts and culture in the West as it is anchored in a strong local artistic culture. And of course, the Centre’s backbone is you, its loyal supporter, without whom the Centre could not rise to the challenges it has faced, and who has kept the team motivated to continue to provide exceptional arts services for all. I am lucky to be joining this fantastic team along with an inspiring community of supporters and I am excited to get to know the faces that make up the Linenhall family. I am already imagining new generative possibilities for the Centre going forward, engaging artists, potential collaborators and stimulating pairings of artistic disciplines. POETRY DAY IRELAND Thursday 2nd May @ 8.00pm Truth or Dare?

- An Open Mic evening with MC Kevin Higgins The theme of Poetry Day Ireland 2019 is Truth or Dare? Speak your truth, or dare to see the world differently. To celebrate, the Linenhall Arts Centre welcomes acclaimed poet Kevin Higgins to host an evening of poets and songwriters to light up our stage. We are inviting anyone who wants to have a go to sign up and showcase your work. The Stinging Fly described Kevin Higgins as “likely the most read living poet in Ireland”. His poems have been quoted in The Daily Telegraph, The Times (UK), The Independent, The Daily Mirror, Hot Press, and Tonight With Vincent Browne.. Kevin’s 8th poetry collection, Sex and Death at Merlin Park Hospital, will be published by Salmon Poetry in June. Adm: €7/€5 (concessions) You can sign up to perform via the Linenhall website. Music Network presents De Temps Antan

The incredible French-Canadian folk super group De Temps Antan have captured the hearts of audiences across the globe with their stunning interpretations of time-honoured melodies from Quebec’s musical past. Driven by the stomping ‘tac-tica-tac’ of ‘les pieds’ (a type of clog), their rough-hewn sound is an utterly infectious mix of boundless energy and joie de vivre. The group’s live shows are dosed with catchy honkytonk tunes, uncontrolled laughter, and sudden, impromptu shifts in rhythm and harmony – so expect the unexpected! Three powerful vocals combine to create joyous harmonies; several of De Temps Antan’s songs also feature close-up call-and-response vocals that date back to the work songs of Quebec’s lumber camps. Deirdre Moynihan (soprano) & RTÉ Contempo Quartet

One of Ireland’s foremost early music artists, Deirdre Moynihan’s CD of Vivaldi Cantatas on Naxos earned widespread critical acclaim. The Examiner described it as a “rare listening pleasure” and International Record Review highlighted a voice “unfailingly beautiful in tone.” She has performed as a soloist with, among others, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, RTÉ NSO, Irish Baroque Orchestra and Irish Chamber Orchestra; and performed concerts in N. & S. America, Israel, Lebanon, Japan, China and widely in Europe. RTÉ Contempo Quartet is one of the most exciting and vibrant chamber ensembles performing today. RTÉ Contempo Quartet has performed over two thousand concerts worldwide including Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Tel Aviv Performing Arts Centre and Geidai Tokyo. Watch This Space Dance & Musical Theatre group is based in Castlebar with weekly classes around Mayo. The aim of the group is to bring the love of dance and musical theatre to all of its students from the age of 6 upwards, as well as to build confidence and have fun in a safe and friendly environment. Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society presents the hilarious and touching play Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling. Set in the beauty parlour of a small town in Louisiana, the audience is introduced to a cast of six women and eavesdrops on their conversations as they share their joys, hopes and heartache – and indulge in a little small-town gossip. The play spans a number of years and, through the ups and downs, the women’s friendship is tested, but their strong bond helps them deal with the joys and tragedies of life. LOCAL ARTS: CHORAL CONCERT Thursday 30th May @ 8.00pm Harmonia

‘Irish Eyes are Smiling’... The 45 members of Harmonia Choir have many reasons to be happy. This choir comprises mainly retired Primary School teachers from all corners of Mayo and neighbouring counties. Having performed at the annual Bealtaine concerts and Cór Mhaigh Eo events, as well as bringing their own brand of Christmas cheer to hospital patients for over a decade, this mixed voice choir goes from strength to strength, with a wide repertoire of songs, from the old to the very modern. When conductor and choir founder Dr. Una Quinn retired this year, her replacement Finola Higgins oversaw a seamless transition. Harmonia considers itself very lucky in both its conductors. Led by choir member Sean Lavin, Harmonia now boasts a Trad Group, Ceoltoiri an Gheata. This group plays a variety of instruments and their repertoire is ever expanding. Lisa O’Neill is an Irish songwriter like no other. Her roots may be sourced in folk and traditional music but her work opens up a landscape beyond any settled sense of genre. She has quietly built a reputation for herself on the Irish and international scenes and now has a growing following with her unique folk sound, strong song-writing and distinctive voice. Her debut release Has an Album was followed in 2013 by Choice Music Prize-nominated Same Cloth Or Not. The Amazing Swift *

One of the fastest flying birds in the sky, they never land - except to lay their eggs and rear their chicks. They come to Mayo for just 4 months each summer. The Linenhall Arts Centre is home to three pairs of this rare bird. Lynda Huxley of Swift Conservation Mayo will give you lots of information about this fantastic bird and show unique video footage of Swifts in the nest boxes at GMIT in Castlebar. TRADITIONAL/FOLK MUSIC Wednesday 26th June @ 8.00pm Daoirí Farrell

Dublin-born traditional singer and bouzouki player Daoirí has been described by some of the biggest names in Irish folk music as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. Farrell cut his teeth as a singer in Dublin’s famous Góilin Singers Club and at other sessions across the city. After a promising debut album, The First Turn (2009) Daoirí spent several years studying traditional music and performance, during which time he was introduced to the singing of the late Liam Weldon, an encounter that was to prove influential to Daoirí’s style. His second album True Born Irish Man (2017) went on to win him two BBC Folk Awards in 2017 (Best Traditional Track, and Best Newcomer). VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 5th April – Saturday 11th May Nathalie Daoust – Korean Dreams

Photographer Nathalie Daoust’s Korean Dreams is a complex series that probes the unsettling vacuity of North Korea. The images reveal a country that seems to exist outside of time, as a carefully choreographed mirage. Daoust has spent much of her career exploring the chimeric world of fantasy: the hidden desires and urges that compel people to escape from reality. Here, she explores this escapist impulse not as an individual choice, but as a way of life forced upon an entire nation. Daoust deliberately obscures her photgraphs during the development stage, as the layers of film are peeled off, the images are stifled until the facts become ‘lost’ in the process and a sense of detachment from reality is revealed. The photographs, like the North Korea people, are manipulated until the underlying truth is all but a blur. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 17th May – Saturday 22nd June Holly Walsh - Transience

Artist Holly Walsh presents an exhibition of recent paintings. Drawing inspiration from the Irish landscape, especially rural and secluded areas, Walsh cites Chinese ink paintings as a fundamental influence in exploring the more ephemeral qualities of landscapes and the portrayal of Nature. “Shifting light, wind and water all give a landscape its complexity and life. These transient elements contrast with the more solid structures such as earth and rock, but also compliment them. This duality is what fascinates me, and I find myself drawn to places where both elements interplay with one another.” Holly Walsh graduated from the Crawford College of Art and Design in 2016. Based on her multi-prize-winning 4th Year Degree Show, she was awarded Cork Arts Society Student of the Year and solo exhibitions in the Lavit Gallery and the James Barry Exhibition Centre, C.I.T. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 28th June – Saturday 3rd August Sinéad Curran - Sitchensis

This exhibition explores the forest landscape over a period of plantation to maturation. The title derives from the Picea sitchensis or the Sitka spruce, a conifer introduced from Canada to Irish forestry in the early 1900s by Augustine Henry. A dialogue emerges between the plantation landscape and the built environment that examines the way people observe and relate to the natural landscape. In the photographs a building acts as a metaphor for a childhood/idealistic narrative from one of displacement: a space of uncertainty and disillusionment. The installation sheds lights on the tragic conflict, while the film underpins the construct of cultural acceptance. Sinéad Curran is based in Dublin and has an MA in Visual Arts Practice from IADT. Out from in-between is an exhibition by Aileen Hamilton featuring new drawings, paintings and sculptural work. Aileen reflects on walking and the act of moving through and connecting with the landscape. Central to her work is the perception of space and time and how an imagined sequence of events unfolds within the limits they impose. Aileen considers ecological cycles and organic processes within her drawings, exploring the delicate balances and repetitive patterns that bind the natural world to form. Isolated, fragmented landscapes appear suspended or floating in a fragile or exposed state. Aileen applies directional lines to depict a flowing energy that seeps in and around her work. This energy grows from a central point expanding, diffusing and folding back on itself. Recurring motifs emerge and set up rhythms among vivid and muted tones. Using a variety of media, Aileen shifts her focus back and forth between flatness and depth. Aileen Hamilton graduated in Fine Art Painting from NCAD in 2001. SUMMER WORKSHOP: CREATIVE WRITING Creative Writing Summer Camp for Teenagers (for 13-18yrs) with writer Dani Gill Tuesday 2nd - Thursday 4th July 10.30am - 4.30pm Daily (including lunch break) Over the course of this exciting camp Dani will cover character and world building exercises, video game narrative and poetry. The workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediates, Dani will provide guided reading, writing exercises and creative case studies, in an environment that is relaxed and fun. Dani is a writer and event curator, specialising in literature. She published her first poetry collection in 2017 and is working on a novel. From 2010-2016 she was the Director of Cúirt International Festival of Literature, Galway, and now works for Words Ireland as their Audience Development Officer and curates independent projects with festivals, county councils and libraries. WRITING WORKSHOP Flash Fiction Writing Workshop for Adults with writer Nuala O’Connor Saturday 27th July, 11.00am to 5.00pm Short on words but long on depth, flash fiction stings like good poetry. Punchy, succinct and surprising, the best flash stories shift the reader’s heart but they also keep it beating hard. By definition a short form, in flash every word is essential and excess words and ideas are pared away. Suitable for the novice as well as the experienced writer, this one-day course will guide participants through practical theory on how to write effective flash and there will be in-class writing exercises. We will look at sample stories from accomplished flash writers and explore outlets for completed stories. Handouts will be provided. Nuala O’Connor lives in Co. Galway. In 2019 she won the James Joyce Quarterly competition to write the missing story from Dubliners, titled Ulysses. Her fourth novel, Becoming Belle, was published to critical acclaim in 2018 in the US and Ireland and will be published in the UK in June 2019. WRITING WORKSHOP WRITE AWAY Inishbofin Creative Writing School for Adults with Jean Tuomey Sunday 1st September - Thursday 5th September 2019 Back by popular demand, this hugely popular writing workshop returns for 2019. Taking place on the inspirational island of Inishbofin, WRITE AWAY is an exciting opportunity to write in an encouraging space under the popular guidance of Jean Tuomey.
