Hi there, It’s all excitement here at the Linenhall as we prepare for a jam-packed autumn programme of events. In my role as Arts Access Officer I’ve had great fun organising children’s events and workshop opportunities for everyone to explore their creativity. This year we’ve spread our RoolaBoola children’s arts events across the autumn to become the RoolaBoola Children’s Arts Season. It includes top quality national and international theatre: Stick By Me (Scotland); This Girl Laughs…(Cork), and a music performance - Inni-K - for primary schools. Branar are bringing us a cracker of a rock-n-roll adventure, Rockin’ Rhymes, for music lovers aged 2 to 102 on Sat 26 Oct. I’ve had a sneak peek at their rehearsals and it’s going to be fab. Our annual exhibition for young audiences Fold/Unfold explores the art of paper folding and includes a schools workshops programme, and a day-long paper folding event and film screening (Sat 2 Nov) with exhibiting artist Vanya Lambrecht Ward. This autumn we’re excited to work with Laureate na nÓg Sarah Crossan, and Fighting Words Mayo on two writing projects for teenagers. Check out our special poetry event for teenage audiences (Fri 15 Nov) featuring Sarah and a very special guest (see website for announcement). For Culture Night (Fri 20 Sept) we explore artist Robert Ryan’s exhibition Forgotten Existence with free workshops and an artist’s talk. There are lots more opportunities for adults to get creative this season including workshops in large scale drawing (our gallery will transform into a workshop space for one day only!), stained glass, photography and writing. We look forward to making art with you! The brochure is full of lots of other brilliant events for the not so young – take time to browse at your leisure. Music is close to my own heart and we’ve performances from the Alan Kelly Gang and Eddi Reader, Bangers and Crash (stunning percussionists), Breandán and Cormac Begley (a concertina, accordion and song tour de force), and an intriguing exploration of Traditional dance and song Preab Meadar Rhythm and Rhyme featuring local dancer Liam Scanlon (Fri 22 Nov). There’s plenty more too - theatre, literature, film and comedy – something for everyone. At the Linenhall we’re hugely thankful to be based in a community that really supports what we do, whether through coming along to events and workshops, supporting our friends scheme, eating in our coffee shop, spreading the word about our work, etc… A sincere THANK YOU from all of us for ensuring that arts and creativity have a central place in our town. You bring a smile to our faces on a daily basis. To stay up to date with all the behind-the-scenes action here at the Linenhall feel free to sign up to our weekly e-newsletter or follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. If that’s not your thing, we’re at the end of the phone for any queries you might have. Keep the Arts in your Hearts!
PS: For parents with small babies we’re presenting a morning performance of Joanne Ryan’s theatre show Eggistentialism in association with our colleagues in the Strollers Touring Network. We believe everyone should have access to live theatre experiences!

LITERATURE/MULTIMEDIA Saturday 12 October @ 3.00pm Ian Maleney & Jamie Goldrick
Ian Maleney and film-maker Jamie Goldrick collaborate to create a live audio-visual documentary for stage, based on the text from Minor Monuments, a thought-provoking and quietly devastating meditation on family and loss. With images and sound recordings from its author Ian Maleney and original footage from Jamie Goldrick, the event will weave live readings with ambient landscape sounds, voice recordings, projected imagery and film. Set around a small family farm on the edge of a bog, a few miles from the river Shannon, Minor Monuments is a collection of essays unfolding from the landscape of the Irish midlands. Taking in the physical and philosophical power of sound and music, and the effects of Alzheimer’s disease on a family, Ian Maleney questions the nature of home, memory, and the complex nature of belonging. “Minor Monuments is beautifully poised between the vivid recollection of experience and subtle reflections on the nature of memory itself.” – Fintan O’Toole Presented in association with Wild Atlantic Words. Her music combines ethereal vocals with deft musicianship, evocative lyrics (bilingual at times), and a unique approach to song-writing. Having shared stages with musicians including Toumani Diabaté, Glen Hansard, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Jeff Ballard, Lisa Hannigan and many more, Inni-K is becoming a well-established presence in Irish music. Come and hear why. ”One of Ireland’s most exciting artists.” - Irish Times “Inni-K is one of those rare singers that will impress almost anyone with a passing interest in music.” - Dan Hegarty, 2FM Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

STAND-UP COMEDY Friday 8 November @ 8.30pm Ger Staunton
In this new show, expect more of Staunton’s deadpan, tonguein-cheek delivery, as he weaves stories and jokes from his Westof-Ireland childhood, to his self-confessed, infinitely confusing adulthood. Ger Staunton has been making waves both nationally and internationally, and is now considered one of the best Irish comedians working today. After sold out performances in 2017 and 2018 he returns to the Linenhall with another brand new show. So far this year he has toured America, Europe and Scandinavia, and for this home-town show he will be just coming off the back of his third month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. “Incredibly funny” – The Examiner “One of the best comedy writers in Ireland. An absolute stand out.” – The International Comedy Club, Dublin “Weaving stories in the true tradition of Irish comedy, Outstanding.” – Cosmic Comedy, Berlin Adm. €14 / €12 (concessions)
AMERICAN ROOTS MUSIC Wednesday 13 November @ 8.00pm
Riley Baugus: Banjos, Ballads, Stories & Songs of the Southern Appalachians
Photo: Rosalind Wilson
Riley Baugus represents the very best of old time American banjo and song. His powerful singing voice and expert musicianship place him squarely in the next generation of the quality American roots tradition. Riley is a native of the southern Appalachians. The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina is where his roots lie, and he grew up learning the music and art of storytelling of the region from older musicians in the area. His solo show consists of a focus on banjos, ballads, stories and songs. Riley has toured in the UK for many years with Ira Bernstein, as one half of the hugely popular Appalachian Roots project, and has also recorded with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and with Willie Nelson, both T-Bone Burnett projects. “Baugus is the latest in a long line of superb North Carolina banjo pickers… Quintessential American old-time music.”- Billboard Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

Eggsistentialism - Written & performed by Joanne Ryan
Photo: Ken Coleman
Joanne Ryan’s internationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning show is a funny, tender and moving exploration of reproduction in 21st-Century Ireland. Looking down the barrel of her final fertile years, one modern Irish woman goes on a comical quest to uncover the ifs, hows and, crucially, the whys of reproducing her genes. Mixing animation with stand-up, monologue and hilarious recorded interjections from Ryan’s mother, Eggsistentialism takes a light-hearted but unflinching look at one of life’s most compelling dilemmas: should making a life for oneself involve making another? “Close to a masterpiece; intelligent, thoughtful, wry, funny and above all loving.” - The Sunday Independent Adm. €16 / €14

TRADITIONAL MUSIC & DANCE Friday 22 November @ 8.00pm
Preab Meadar Rhythm and Rhyme Veteran Traditional music innovators Lorcán Mac Mathúna and Daire Bracken combine with sean nós dancers Liam Scanlon and Caoimhe Ní Mhaolagáín to create a mesmerising conversation of rhythm, between voice and fiddle, and Traditional dance. Based on Lorcán and Daire’s ground-breaking new suite of ‘dance-songs’, Preab Meadar, together with specially choreographed dance steps, this performance presents a truly unique combination of vocal, instrumental, and dance traditions. Preab Meadar is based on the meters from a medieval Gaelic tradition known as the ‘Dán Díreach’. From this ancient and mysterious source comes a new tradition of electrifying rhythms. Drawing on inspiration from old and contemporary traditions, and from village dance celebrations which were once common all over Europe, In Tandem presents a visual and aural feast of dance songs that will have your toes twitching and lips humming. Intrigued? Well wait till you see and hear it! “Boundary-transcending.” - Bernard Clarke, Lyric FM Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORDS/MUSIC/PERFORMANCE Wednesday 4 December @ 8.00pm The Wonders of the Wake
The Wonders of the Wake is a unique celebration of one of the oldest rites of humanity, the Irish Wake: in song, music, bardic poetry and story-telling. From the ancient Neolithic graves on Achill Island on the Atlantic seaboard, to the plains of Troy and Homer’s Iliad, to yesterday’s funeral, the Irish Wake still teaches us all how to live, love and die. The Wonders of the Wake in keening, music, song and word celebrates the craic, the joy, the prumsái, and the haunting lament of a traditional Irish Wake. Wonders of the Wake is based on acclaimed BAFTA-winning writer Kevin Toolis’ bestselling book My Father’s Wake: How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die and is an artistic collaboration with the beloved Irish singer Mags Gallen and harpist Freda Hatton. Kevin Toolis is a writer, a bardic poet and former war correspondent for the New York Times. Mags Gallen is an actress and sings, plays piano and fiddle with the Irish Trad band Arcanadh. Christmas: a time to remember the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future; a time of feasts and festivities; of holly and mistletoe; a time of visits and visitations. A time of ghosts. This dark celebration of Christmas is adapted and performed by Rebecca Vaughan (Austen’s Women, Elizabeth, Female Gothic), directed by Elton Townend Jones. “Truly extraordinary... one of the most exciting young performers on the British Stage.” – British Theatre Guide “Holds the audience in the palm of its hand... a near perfect piece of theatre.” – The Scotsman “Perfection... VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 9 August – Saturday 7 September Aileen Hamilton - Out from in-between
Out from in-between is an exhibition by Aileen Hamilton featuring new drawings, paintings and sculptural work. Aileen reflects on walking and the act of moving through and connecting with the landscape. Central to her work is the perception of space and time and how an imagined sequence of events unfolds within the limits they impose. Aileen considers ecological cycles and organic processes within her drawings, exploring the delicate balances and repetitive patterns that bind the natural world to form. Isolated, fragmented landscapes appear suspended or floating in a fragile or exposed state. Aileen applies directional lines to depict a flowing energy that seeps in and around her work. This energy grows from a central point expanding, diffusing and folding back on itself. Recurring motifs emerge and set up rhythms among vivid and muted tones. Using a variety of media, Aileen shifts her focus back and forth between flatness and depth. Aileen Hamilton graduated in Fine Art Painting from NCAD in 2001. She has had solo exhibitions in Ireland, Spain, Japan and Sweden. www.aileenhamilton.eu Adm: Free

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 13 September – Saturday 12 October Robert Ryan – Forgotten Existence
“My images are of a universal landscape where generic creatures wander like lost souls.” Referencing post-modernism, Ryan’s lyrical, beautifully rendered and hauntingly evocative paintings borrow qualities from European old masters, using traditional characteristics in a modern context. Robert Ryan paints landscape, but his work cannot be described as ‘landscape painting’. Rather, the works explore allegorical concepts including the infinity of space and time, solitude, vulnerability, fragility and the cycle of life. “This is work that ultimately celebrates the commonality between man and all other creatures – past, present and future.” Born in County Limerick in 1963, Ryan graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 1987. He has exhibited extensively in Ireland and abroad and his work is included in many important collections including the National Portrait Collection, National Contemporary Drawing Collection and Office of Public Works Collection. http://www.robertryanireland.com/ Adm. Free Official opening on Fri 20 Sept at 6.30pm, followed by a talk by the artist as part of Culture Night events (see p4). All Welcome.

PRINTING WORKSHOP An Introduction to Cyanotype and Van Dyke Brown Printing Processes for Adults with photographer Michael Gannon Saturday 9 November 11.00am-4.30pm Cyanotype was invented in 1842 by Mr John Herschel. Making cyanotypes is a very enjoyable process that involves contact printing using a photographic negative or making photograms on any suitable material, eg. paper, glass and wood, and exposed to sunlight or any UV light source. Materials are made light sensitive by brushing on a photosensitive emulsion which makes it a real hands-on process. The Van Dyke Brown printing process is almost identical, but gives a rich brown colour as opposed to the blue of cyanotypes. This introductory workshop will comprise: a brief history of the cyanotype process; an introduction to the Van Dyke Brown process; preparation of photosensitive material; the use of photographic negatives to produce prints; the use of plant material, eg. leaves and flowers, paper cutouts, paper templates of interesting shapes, etc. to make contact prints (‘sun prints’). At the end of the day you will have a number of finished cyanotype prints and some photosensitive paper that you have prepared yourself to make some cyanotypes at home. Michael Gannon is an award-winning photographer and Fellow of the Irish Photographic Federation. A key member of the Mayo Photographic Club his work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, and is held in collections including that of Mayo County Council. An Introduction To The Cyanotype & Van Dyke Brown Photographic Processes takes place on Saturday 9 November from 11.00am to 4.30pm (with a 1 hour break during the day). Cost per person is €35.
