Welcome to the second Anniversary Issue! This time around, our theme is Push/Pull. We asked our contributors: What does tension mean to you? Get ready for a volume of editorials connected to the idea of struggle and contrasts. We can’t believe it’s our second birthday! This year was filled with a lot of push and pull for Liner, and that tension has lead to some big milestones for us.This year marked a huge increase in readership and contributors from every continent, multiple issues on the Issuu homepage and in Staff Picks, our Mobile Issue showcasing 100% iPhone content, our Visual Issue that was competely image-based, our first sponsors and Liner being stocked in print in multiple shops around the country. Personally, this year has been one of the most challenging of my life. The world has a way of pressing and squeezing us, making us into coal. Just when we think we might get a break, it begins pressing once more until we hopefully, with any positivity or luck,
make a stone out of our experience. That’s really all we can hope for in this life. Embracing the struggle is not easy, but enriches our lives. In high school, I became obsessed with nihilism (so emo, I know). A lot of people find the idea depressing, but I see it just the opposite: I found my belief that the world and everything in it has no inherent meaning. But, we make that meaning ourselves. A rock means nothing. But in the right hands, it can be a paperweight for a novel, a tool for grinding spices, a decorative element. A hug is just arms wrapping around each other. But to a person in need, they mean comfort, warmth, security. A trek through an unrelenting deluge of unfortunate circumstances is just a bad time, but if you make it so, it can be a life-changing learning experience. I find meaning in my life through this lens. Life is beautiful because of this struggle, not in spite of it. I find so much inspiration from this issue full of that dogged, determined spirit. Let’s push back together!
