III - DAY 1 [26th NOV] Macau Science Center Convention Center
Conference: “The Maker Movement: A Chance for Macau!” This conference’s objective was to introduce to the public the Maker Movement’s concept, the myriad of possibilities that this concept could bring to Macau and to the city’s creative industries, and the positive impacts that it can have on the educational, creative, business and economic diversification levels.
This counted with the Minchee Lab and the University of Saint Joseph as coorganizers alongside with the THIS IS MY CITY main organizer the “Cultural Association +853”, and counted with the support of the Macau Science Center. The speakers were: -‐
Gerald Estadieu (Professor at the University of Saint Joseph and Co-founder of the Minchee Lab project) who presented the theme “ Maker Movement, What and Why? “, during which he explained the Maker Movement, the Digital Fabrication, and the Fab Lab Concepts to the audience.
-‐
Manuel Correia da Silva (Creative Director and Co-founder of the Lines Lab project) who through his presentation “ We Are All Makers “ showed the audience the benefits and influence that the Maker Movement can have on the creative projects and fields, by giving the example of his own experience on the product design field.
-‐
Paulo Rego (Publisher and General Manager of the Plataforma Macau project) whose presentation “Make Macau Count” gave the audience a general view of the economic and social impacts of the Maker’s concept and the possibilities that can arise from its adoption by Macau’s creative industries community, being that it can be a possible motor for the economic diversification and a source of identity of Macau’s role on the regional setting of the Pearl River Delta.
Screening: “Maker: A Documentary on the Maker Movement” by Mu-Ming Tsai The 'Maker Movement', sometimes called the 'Third Industrial Revolution,' subverts traditional manufacturing by building on innovative concepts such as open source, local manufacturing, crowd funding, and digital fabrication. Breaking the hobbyist movement stereotype, 'Maker' delves deep into this ecosystem of design and manufacturing in the Internet era. The film explores the ideas, tools, and personalities that are driving the
Maker Movement – and returns with a timely snapshot of one of the transforming influences of the current age. The film, directed by Mu-Ming Tsai and released on May 2014, is the result of a series of extensive interviews of key figures behind headline-making projects, daily practitioners, and observers of the movement, in our effort to piece together what this ecosystem looks like, and present insights on how it can impact society, culture and the economy in the U.S., and the world. The screening was made possible with the support of the Macau Science Center, and the co-organization of the Minchee Lab and the University of Saint Joseph. It followed the conference and served to illustrate the notions of the Maker Movement. DAY 1 in Numbers: Number of activities: 2 Number of Speakers/Participants: 3 Audience: 18 (aprox.) “Creative Residencies TIMC13: A Retrospective Exhibition” The Creative Residencies have been, since the 2012 edition, one of the main sets of activities included in “THIS IS MY CITY” programs, alongside with the other three, the Educational Actions, Performances and the Exhibitions. It has been
thought as a mean to promote an interchange between the East and the West, on a creative level. In the past two editions, the “THIS IS MY CITY” took local and Chinese creators to Portugal, and brought Portuguese creators to Macau. In the aim, to incentivize the interchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences between creators of different cultures, and also with the objective of showing what is being done on this part of the globe, giving these residencies a double function - the interchange and apprehension of new knowledge, as well as the showcasing of the different forms of experiencing creativity. On 2012 and 2013, under a protocol between “THIS IS MY CITY” and the Portuguese cultural association “Oficinas Convento- Associação Cultural De Arte E Comunicação”, in Montemor-o-Novo, a group of creators from Macau and China participated in this unique project. The works of Crystal W. M. Chan and Yves Sonolet showcased in this exhibition gave an insight into the whole process linked with those residencies, showing not only some of the work produced in loco, but also the research work made by the creators. Alongside with Crystal’s and Yves’ work, there were also present works and references from previous editions of the Creative Residencies with the aim to give a notion of what it is the Residencies project and what have been done in the past. This exhibition was co-organized in conjunction with the Macau Design Centre, a THIS IS MY CITY – The Creative Festival strategic partner.
3D Printing Showcase The 3D printers assembled during “Make Your Own 3D Printer” workshop were showcased as part of an audio-visual performance, featuring video mapping and real-time electroacoustic music. The audience had the opportunity to see the devices in action while listening to an experimental composition produced live with sound samples captured from their mechanical elements. This showcase was curated by the THIS IS MY CITY team under the creative direction of João Cordeiro, and technically supported by Minchee Lab.
This showcase was intended as an original way to show the 3D printers in action and give a notion of the possibilities of these tools on the creative processes. It captured the attention of all members of the audience as they saw the materialization of the printed pieces in real time and under their own eyes. It was also an opportunity for the local creators to meet up in an informal way and exchange ideas and share their new projects.
“TIMC TALKS” Powered By Pecha Kucha After the success of the 2010’s edition of THIS IS MY CITY, where the Pecha Kucha model was presented for the first time in Macau, and the 2013’s edition where the THIS MY CITY Conferences “Powered By Pecha Kucha” took place in two different occasions and venues, for the 2014’s edition, the Festival brought once again a session “Powered By Pecha Kucha”. They were invited to reflect upon the past experiences and expectations of the CITY, the present impressions, and the hopes and dreams for the future. The CITY, as a place of living, is built upon the usage of the geographic spaces that we occupy. As such, either the city we live now, either a city where we lived before or just an ideal city, a place which we can claim as our city. THIS IS MY CITY! Directed and produced by the locally based director Maxim Bessmertny, this movie is one of the best examples of the quality creative productions that have been being made in Macau lately; therefore it was the THIS IS MY CITY – The Creative Festival duty to showcase it on this year’s program. The screening counted with presence of the director and all the cast, such as the actors Sam Leung, Aeson Lei and Chu Wing Mui; this made of the screening session a big success bringing in a big audience and media coverage. VI – Promotion, Media and Internet On this edition of the THIS IS MY CITY – The Creative Festival it was noticeable the increase of the media and internet exposure compared with previous editions, this has to do, not only with the quality of this year’s program, but also with the promotion strategy adopted by the THIS IS MY CITY team that included working closely with solid media partners, attributing to each one of them the coverage of specific parts and activities of the program. Also, the fact of having several co-organizers and partners for the various activities helped on the joining of efforts to promote the event, mainly by the sharing of the communication means that each part already have. Still to note the enormous increase (150%) of followers at the Festival’s Facebook page, this due to the synergies built with our partners, crossing over the social media promotional actions between partners. To mention that in result of a protocol established with the Festival’s media partner TDM (Macau TV Station), the Festival, together with the musician’s promotion agent, offered 2 documentaries about the artist’s work that was shown on TDM Canal Macau in the week before the concert, in return TDM filmed and recorded the concert in Macau.
