Inspired by the nodes at Dataran Merdeka, that the act of togetherness happens where people gather and interact with each other within the activities, not only locals but also outsiders. It is common to exchange ideas or information that heavily influence the community of Kuala Lumpur through discussions. The presence of tolerance and acceptance among the individuals helps strengthen the relationship between the diverse and multicultural communities.

Therefore, this performing art cultural center acts as a platform for the community to exchange information about the richness of the heritage among the younger generation and to promote cultural aspects for the tourist so that the heritage would not disappear. It has been designated as an experiential place that causes the heritage features to be imagined by the users, while contributing an opportunity to promote cultural features in this modern age. The community has its own sense of creativity and the site has its own heritage, the connection between the critical thinking and context of the human being plays a role as a grip upon their own background for the future generation. The best way to raise understanding of the importance of culture is through the performing arts, it can improve the sense of belongings about their history, as well as appreciation of their life values.

PRECEDENT STUDY The Commons, Thailand

Area : 5000 m2 Year: 2016 Bangkokians are now yearning for new possibilities of outdoor living space that can effectively answer to the tropical heat and its dense living condition where there is not much space for the outdoor. The Commons’, a small retail development in the city center, is an attempt to create a new active outdoor space where people can comfortably enjoy it at anytime of the year. ‘The Commons’ proposes a vertical open-air public space folding upward as a backbone of the building.

PRECEDENT STUDY The Commons, Thailand

It starts with ‘the Ground’ which is a landscape of steps and ramps integrated with platforms, seatings, planting and small kiosks. ‘The Ground’ vertically opens up through large voids on the upper floors, connecting to a large public open-air area. The space vertically and horizontally flows in and out the entire building and allows for natural ventilation throughout.

DESIGN RESPONSE

WALKTHROUGH

BLOCK

Several entry points into the site create more flexibility on the design approach and target users.

Creating a massing following the site boundary lines.

DESIGN RESPONSE

PERMEABILITY

NATURAL VENTILATION

Dividing the block into two to create a linear circulation that connect people of street from Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin and the river side.

Experience a fresh and natural air for the users and improve the building sustainability.

DESIGN RESPONSE

SUN PATH

NEW NODES

Our site is facing East and West which increase the sun glazed to the building. Providing a facade on the East and West rise up the user’s thermal comfort inside the building. Moreover creating a skylight boost the user’s experience to feel at ease and connected to nature.

By shifting the massing to create new nodes for gathering and outdoor social events for the users.

DESIGN RESPONSE

ADDING LANDSCAPE

HIERARCHY

Addition of greeneries at the plaza give a shade for the users when using the public space as well as make the public realm more vibrant.

The hierarchy approach of the building shows by stacking the some volumes in form making and create a visual interaction between the users.

DESIGN RESPONSE

ZONING

ACTIVITIES

The blue indicates the public area where any kind of activities can be done here. The yellow shows a semi private area that contains a number of activities that are provided. Lastly, the red is a private area such as office and dormitory.

The red indicates an active activity such as dance, music, workshop, etc. However, the passive activity is coloured in blue such as library and theater.

DESIGN EXPLORATION CENTRAL ORGANIZATION Creating a focus point which is the performing hall to acknowledge the community the importance of their background through performance Issue: Learning can be done not only from the performance but also the interaction between the users on other programs such as library, workshop, gallery, etc.

DYNAMIC STRUCTURES Making a fluid structure to blend with the river of life design approach. It is also increase tourist’s attention with a dynamic forms. Issue : Target user is not only tourist but also younger generation to boost the cultural aspects. The form itself also contrast with the heritage district pattern.

DESIGN EXPLORATION ROOF GARDEN Creating a place for sightseeing and enjoying the heritage building near the site. Issue : Doesn’t fit my initial idea where the last floor should be private. Adding a roof garden will increase vibrancy on that level.

PUBLIC SPACE Creating new potential public space for the users to do their activities. The additional of greeneries attract more people to use it. Issue: The cultural center should be the main nodes, the public space could be the mediator for people to experience the cultural programs.

DESIGN EXPLORATION CLUSTERED ORGANIZATION Creating a spaces that emphasis on the solid and void that interlock the volume and merge into a single form that has variety of faces. Issue: Not effective enough for the users to experience all the programs that are provided due to no specific circulation.

DIAGONAL AXIS To decrease the double sun glazed due to the site orientation. In addition a breakdown on the massing create a potential public space that can be used within the building. Issue: Sun glazed can be tackled by adding sun shading device such as louvers.

DESIGN EXPLORATION HIERARCHY Stacking up the massing create a new experience for the users due to the intersection of the circulations. Issue: Too solid and no natural ventilation can cross the building to cool the spaces.

OPENNESS Creating a gap or void space for the natural ventilation as well as increasing the interaction between the individuals from different levels

DESIGN EXPLORATION

FINAL IDEA Making the intersection not only each floor but also within the same floor with a linear circulation and wide corridor to increase the awareness of each other, so interaction will occur within this cultural center.
